[Bug 245823] Re: [intrepid] After apt-get upgrade, Desktop Effects Cause Blank Brown Screen On Boot

2008-08-23 Thread Sam Liddicott
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 245888 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245888

I sometimes get white screens if a window is created while I'm on
another desktop. I can minimize and restore from taskbar to make it go
away.

I think the brown screen is because the gnome-session isn't starting.

[Bug 375436] [NEW] IMAP sync gets stuck on expected message gone

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution fails to load messages from some folders with the message:

This is technically true in this case, the imap server was unable to
provide message 1479, but it should not be a fatal error - evolution
should carry on and show the other messages that were available - as
does MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Pocket Outlook etc.

[Bug 375446] [NEW] evolution IMAP ignores additional namespaces

2009-05-12 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This post says it all:
http://www.mail-archive.com/evolution-l...@gnome.org/msg06856.html

My mail server is setup like this:

INBOX
 +--fruits
 +--veggies
 +--meats
cheese
 +--swiss
 +--cheddar
pizza
 +--buffalowing
 +--taco

INBOX is the defaul mailbox namespace, So I can only get access to INBOX via
Evolution.
I've fiddled with "Override server-supplied folder namespace" in "Receiving
Options" and left
Namespace: or with a variety of different options, but Evolution can
never seem to see my cheese and pizza boxes. I'm using IMAP for the
server type.

Thunderbird works fine, outlook works fine. Evolution just doesn't
notice.

I'm using Citadel imap server.

Re: [Bug 327284] Re: [Jaunty Alpha4] Bluetooth Headset pairs but freezes the system when used

2009-05-13 Thread Sam Liddicott
My audio gets very jumpy if I use padevchooser to select a combined
channel for all local devices.

For a few seconds it's fine, and then I get gaps of silence which get
progressively longer and longer.

For the first time, though, after years of "why?", padevchooser has
finally shown me the reason for pulseaudio. And the fact that I can set
the volume control beyond 100% for a device is REALLY great!

[Bug 334222] [NEW] MFC-260C not provided for

2009-02-25 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brother-cups-wrapper-extra

On Jaunty, the brother deb's (all installed) do not provide drivers for my
MFC-260C.
On a fresh intrepid install, they do provide drivers for my MFC-260C.

I have jaunty with:
brother-cups-wrapper-common
brother-cups-wrapper-extra
brother-lpr-drivers-common
brother-lpr-drivers-extra

brother-cups-wrapper-extra claims to support the MFC-260C, but when the
printer is installed it fails miserably to provide a driver and when I
browse the brother driver list, the MFC-260C is not listed.

If I manually add a printer it does choose the DCP-110C as the driver -
I don't know if that is correct but it least it picks a driver and it
does print, but the vertical alignment is wrong and the top of the page
is cut off.

(I think the test page should print the driver being used, like windows
test page does.)

I confirm that I got it working with those two ppa and following
instructions at:
http://wiki.bluez.org/wiki/HOWTO/AudioDevices

By pairing the device using the gui and then typing:
gconftool -t string -s /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink
"alsasink device=bluetooth"

and ~/.asoundrc:

pcm.bluetoothraw {
type bluetooth
device 00:13:17:70:38:1B # Jabra BT620s
profile "auto"
}
pcm.bluetooth {
type plug
slave {
pcm bluetoothraw
}
}

Sadly the HID on the headset doesn't pass through, but this is great
anyway I can listen to my music, now to make it work shared with
ekiga, sip registered to my pbx.

2009-04-29 Thread Sam Liddicott
Thomas, here is my xorg.conf file. If I don't use it I get similar
problems to you. Perhaps it will help you.
You may want to simplify it and remove the Virtual line and the extra
monitors.

Even with this config file, after about 48 hours xorg has used up all my
RAM and swap, but at least I can work in the mean-time.

I have:
(--) fglrx(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics " (Chipset = 0x9612)
(--) fglrx(0): (PciSubVendor = 0x103c, PciSubDevice = 0x30e3)

(One day radeonhd will support my card properly. I bought AMD instead of
Nvidia because AMD are supporting the open source drivers well. At work
we have now bought more 6 HP ATI laptops because of this AMD support.
Prior to that we were using Dell with nvidia - because nvidia's drivers
are way better than ATI IMHO, but AMD are helping the open source
drivers and they work well enough).

[Bug 144030] Re: Gutsy beta hang soon after boot

2008-06-02 Thread Sam Liddicott
My regression is not fixed in hardy.

I'll agree with the comment in #225484 that if the mouse pointer moves, it is a
different but.
This bug is ACPI related, and ALT-SYSREQ-anything doesn't work.

However I will follow the tips and try the ibex kernel.

[Bug 269656] Think of the google money

2008-09-15 Thread Sam Liddicott
Without changing to iceweasel or abrowser why doesn't ubuntu ask mozilla
for a slice of the google money for all the search referrals that come
from firefox/google being the default browser/search pair.

And then switch to iceweasel.

Mozilla might come weaseling back asking for first place in exchange for
just no eula when they get to add up their losses in google money. I
reckon ubunto earns them a couple of million dollars a year.

[Bug 103794] Re: Cannot have overlapping partitions

2008-12-12 Thread Sam Liddicott
This is a bad resolution.

The bug is that gparted pretends I don't have a partition table when in
fact I do and it doesn't even warn me.

Its poor enough that gparted won't help me fix the problem (thats its
job, right) but unforgivable that it pretends that there's nothing
wrong.

I hada similar problem yesterday on a friends computer, installing
intrepid on a vista box, luckily *I* know that gparted is a lying
wretch, and fixed it with sfdisk - other people may not read this bug
report and find out that gparted cannot be trusted until their sad story
of gigabytes of lost data gets marked duplicate of this bug and then
they'll wonder what's invalid about the bug

I can only get rid f these winds using the brokn-window killer.

Subject: [Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

Just thought I'd add this:

I just tried locking my screen as User1. The screen-saver started
running. I hit ESC to exit the screen-saver and log back in. I was
prompted with the standard unlock login prompt (no white screen).

At this screen I chose "Switch User" instead of logging in. I was
prompted through the GDM login screen for a username and password. I
entered User2 / password and was dropped into User2's desktop
immediately (as if I had switched users; i.e. it didn't login a new
User2 session, but rather switched me to User2 --this all seems
correct).

At this point I switched back to User1 and was prompted with User1's
unlock screen --NOT the white screen. I was able to unlock the screen
with User1's password and was back to User1's desktop.

My reason for mentioning this is because it seems that when I went from
the unlock screen (where U1's screen was locked), I was able to return
without the white screen. When I go directly from my desktop and switch
users, I return to the white screen. I'm hoping that this will help to
isolate the offending code.

To tie this into the permissions idea; the locked screen prompt is
publicly visible, while my desktop isn't. ?? M'eh. Just a thought.
Anyway, I hope this helps shed some light.

[Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets

2009-03-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
Taking a top from Niels Slot, I purged packages with "fglrx" in the name and
now I find:
$ lsmod | grep radeon
radeon357408 2
drm 203296 3 radeon

which is what I expect.

I also find much improvement. Page-down in firefox is faster - almost instant,
but arrow-down is still slow.
Painting of the wallpaper is also nearly instant, and when I log in I can see
five shades of wall-paper as it fades in from grey instead of two shades
painting very slowly.

So - I think I now have the improvements that are to be expected at this
stage.

I'll report on crashes if i get any more.

Thanks to Andreas, Tormod, Niels and others...

[Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets

2009-03-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
I'm guessing that by "the driver" you mean "an ati driver" which was
probably the closed source fglrx.

The answer is; It still works just as well, except that Jaunty is using
a later release of Xorg, and ATI haven't released a build of their
driver that matches; and so it doesn't work on the current Xorg in
Jaunty.

THIS driver is new-ish and has always been poor on newer hardware AFAIK,
it's just that more people are having to use it sooner than they thought
because ATI are taking their time releasing their closed source driver.

Some people are using the old intrepid Xorg server so they can keep
using the closed source drivers.

[Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets

2009-03-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
Still no joy for me - last Friday my laptop kept hanging - beyond the
power of ctrl-alt-sysreq-b

I had copied my modules to the right place.

Today I have the latest Tormod and git update and build radeon.ko and
drm.ko; I rmmod fglrx and modprobe these, but things are still slow.

$ lsmod | grep radeon
radeon357408 0
drm 203296 1 radeon

Should "radeon" have a reference count of 0 when X is running?

I've tried driver "radeon" "radeonhd" and "ati" but it makes no
difference.

Firefox paints slowly if I do page-down, but even slower if I do line-
down and it has to copy part of the screen.

my xorg.conf is as my post above

[Bug 343788] [NEW] firefox locked or lost settings after crash

2009-03-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

See also bug Bug #224513

I use firefox with NFS home directories. Sometimes network connectivity
is lost or firefox crashes.

The result is
1. that firefox will never run again without severe intervention
2. it looses all settings.

The non-trivial intervention is reduced to:
rm -f .mozilla/*/lock .mozilla/*/.parentlock

and then it starts, but all the settings are missing, page navigation
doesn't work properly and bookmarks are missing.

The better fix is:

mv .mozilla/firefox .mozilla/firefox.old
then start firefox and import the bookmarks from
.mozilla/firefox.old/*/bookmarkbackups

which just leaves the case of everything else missing.

I've had this problem ever since sqlite was used for storing
configuration and now I'm fed up with it.

It seems like sqlite is only suitable for local storage.

If firefox insists on using it, I wish it would be more robust, my
family are gnashing their teeth over it and so am I

like the famous goggles - they do nothing!

2009-03-19 Thread Sam Liddicott

Mostly working for me.

I find it abominably bad at coming up with an xorg.conf from scratch, in
the end I had to just use my Intrepid xorg.conf which came about by much
sweat and tears (attached) however I had to use xrandr "configure
display settings" applet to get a wide 2-monitor desktop but now (unlike
intrepid) when I maximize a window it covers both monitors instead of
sticking to one of the monitors.

I've found that whether or not I get a black screen of death depends on
what my xorg.conf is - and aticonfig is really bad at making one that
works from nothing, which means whether or not it works for you depends
on what you had before.

I get BSOD if I dare have:
Option "TexturedVideo" "off"

is this after a reboot? What does lsmod | grep radeon show? or lsmod |
grep drm

I got out of memory errors when I tried to modprobe drm while fglrx was
loaded, so maybe a similar cause?

and remember it's closed-source-ati that isn't supported - and lets
think how long ago it was since ati got any money for that card - how
long should they support it? I think they've given value for money.

However, the open source drivers _are_ being worked on for your card,

[Bug 96976] Re: gparted shows empty disk

2009-03-02 Thread Sam Liddicott
What more information do you need?

lspci and lsusb have nothing to do with the problem, nor does the disk
type or settings.

Most people who have this problem don't have this problem for very long
because they fix it; but you can reproduce the problem on any PC like
this:

sudo sfdisk -d /dev/sdX | tee ORIG.$$ | sed 's/^\(.*start=
*\)\([0-9]*\)\(.*\)/\1 63 \3/' | sudo sfdisk /dev/sdX

and produce an overlapping partition table by making all partitions
start at position 63.

In such a case gparted wrongly shows that there are no partitions.

[Bug 339451] [NEW] import too slow - enable import button before preview complete

Public bug reported:

I'm trying to import about 1700 photos from an NFS share, and
annoyingly the "import" button of the import dialog is disabled and
seems that it will remain disabled until all the image thumbnails have

At 1 per second this is going to take half an hour just to be able to
click the import button - and then probably go through it all again as
it does the actual import.

[Bug 349030] [NEW] [jaunty] xorg (fglrx) uses 1.8GB of RAM

2009-03-26 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

xorg seems to be using all the RAM up. After 1-2 days of use all my RAM
is used. Then the hard disk goes wild and I have to ctrl-alt-backspace.
(I have 3G RAM and I'm not using swap).

I have xorg-driver-fglrx Version: 2:8.600-0ubuntu1 on Jaunty, with 2
1680x1050 monitors on an hp laptop.

A couple of hours ago xorg was using 1.6GB, now it is using 1.8GB

and it all works fine for me.

[Bug 293832] Re: printer prints page at wrong position, page cut

2009-04-06 Thread Sam Liddicott
I take that back.

The official brother debs cause the test-print page to print properly,
printing from firefox seems to come out fine

but printing from gedit still cuts off the first 2 text lines, although
the left columns are all there.

The printer job options margins were all set to 0 points. I set them all
to 24pt which moved the text about 1.5 em's to the right, but about six
lines down suddenly making room for the gedit page header as well as the
missing 2 lines.

Most weird, maybe "0" as a margin value has a magic meaning?

Now I put the margins back to 0 and I still get the gedit header.

Consider these the ravings of a loony unless someone else reproduces it;
I'm back to saying that the brother's own packages do work and the
ubuntu brother ones don't

[Bug 351570] [NEW] pidgin gets stuck logging in to MSN

2009-03-30 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Possibly a dup of #306756 but it's hard to tell as they don't provide
any more info.

On todays jaunty, fresh reboot even, pidgin logs into IRC and jabber
fine, but get's stuck connecting to MSN.

The "turny circle" also stops turning; and pidgin seems to be in an
eternal "connecting" state.

Looking in the debug logs it logins on fine and manages to do a lot of
talking about the buddies list and then the last commands in the log
file are:

However, I generally find for any ubuntu bug that if you wait two or
three releases it gets fixed (or goes away of it's own accord).

RE: [Bug 343788] Re: firefox locked or lost settings after crash

2009-08-15 Thread Sam Liddicott
I disagree with the "invalid".

The cause may be nfs, or the cause may be an nfs client crashing or
losing network connection, but then the problem is wth firefox.

Currenly I manually remove my profile and lose my history, bookmarks,
client certs and everything.

There is a problem with firefox if firefox can get rendered useless
through such an occasion.

It ought to be able to recover - even with data loss.

2009-07-27 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pretzel

Using pretzel 2.0n-2-0.3 on Jaunty amb64, with the attached cee.fg.patch

If I try to build a noweb C filter, like this:

pretzel-it -i -d -n cee noweave-c-filter

and then run it against the attached fullexample.nw file (in two parts
to aid debugging):

$ cat ./fullexample.nw | noweave -delay -index -filter 'tee

$ ./noweave-c-filter < /tmp/pre.nwf

then I get a segfault after the first chunk has been output, the last

[Bug 375446] Re: evolution IMAP ignores additional namespaces

2009-07-27 Thread Sam Liddicott
I followed the notes here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Watches
and made it also-affect (picks one at random) Centons and made it track
upstream GNOME bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=589866
which I filed, with a camel debug as you suggest.

Thanks

[Bug 57346] totem-xine 1.4.3 missing

2006-08-22 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Totem-xine is pretty decent.
Totem Depends: totem-gstreamer (>= 1.4.3-0ubuntu1) | totem-xine (>=
1.4.3-0ubuntu1)

Please can we have totem-xine >=1.4.3 released to the repositories?

I can do:
  apt-get -b source totem-xine
but I don't know if everyone is comfortable doing this.

Sam

I can't find any way to indicate that this but report applies to Totem-
Xine on Ubuntu Dapper.
