[Bug 244429] Re: Hardy freezing randomly (Dell issue??)

2008-07-28 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Here's the text of the kernel panic from my D630. Please escalate, it
is in the iwl4965 code so it will be hitting a lot of machines.

[Bug 244429] Re: Hardy freezing randomly (Dell issue??)

2008-07-29 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Hmm, perhaps this bug report is too confusing.

This bug is a kernel oops from intel 4965AGN driver.

Probably started with the 2.6.24-19 kernels, kernel panic text caught
yesterday with 2.6.24-20 kernel.

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-20-generic:
  Installed: 2.6.24-20.29
  Candidate: 2.6.24-20.29
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.24-20.29 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-proposed/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expected to happen is that the computer should continue to work.

What happens is that the computer locks up with caps- and scroll-lock
flashing.

There is no trace of this oops in the system logs. The panic was
collected over a serial console connection.

I attach a complete console log from boot to oops, there is a message
from the iwl4965 driver immediately preceding the oops.

[Bug 244429] Re: kernel oops: invalid opcode 0000

2008-07-29 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr

** Summary changed:

- Hardy freezing randomly (Dell issue??)
+ kernel oops: invalid opcode

** Description changed:

- I have posted a thread about random freezing of Hardy here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=832383
- From what I read in the subsequent posts that it seems to happen on Dell
hardware.
+ This bug report derives from discussion at
+ http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=832383

- I have searched existing bugs, but although several bugs are reported on
random freezes none seem to be related.
- The closest -- IMHO -- is this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/234093
- However that is focussed on an Intel graphics card, while I have a nVidia
card in my laptop.
- Find below the result of: lspci | grep -i vga
- 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS
110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)
+ The symptom is that laptops randomly lock up with caps-lock and scroll-
+ lock flashing and need to be hard rebooted, usually by leaning on the
+ power switch.

- Any advice on how to investigate the cause of this issue would be highly
- appreciated.
+ There are no messages in the logs.
+
+ A serial console to another machine reveals that the oops is coming from
+ the iwl4965 wireless driver.

[Bug 300213] [NEW] iwlwifi/iwl-tx.c:1241 iwl_tx_cmd_complete+0x274/0x290 [iwlcore]()

2008-11-19 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

This is probably the Wireless-N vs iwlwifi bug from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-
modules-2.6.24/+bug/244429 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/275359 in a new
form. It now just generates a kernel stack backtrace in
/var/log/messages (and other logs) but no longer crashes the system.

[Bug 275359] [NEW] kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl-tx.c:1198!

2008-09-27 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

kernel oops at random when running wireless. Machine locks up with
flashing caps-lock. No messages in /var/log. Kernel oops collected by
serial console.

No known trigger other than running wireless, but the oops clearly
identifies the line in the iwlwifi sources where it happens and the oops
can be avoided by running a wired network connection.

This appears to be the same problem reported against hardy linux-
backports-modules in bug 244429
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-
modules-2.6.24/+bug/244429) starting in July, which has never been
triaged or responded to by any developer.

2008-08-11 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Could we please get some attention paid to this problem?

People with totally generic hardware, Dell Latitudes, are abandoning
Ubuntu because it -- the latest long term support release -- crashes
when they attempt to use the wireless.

There's no sign that any Ubuntu developer has even read this bug report.

Why? Did I fail to include some essential ingredient?

What more do you need than a kernel oops with a smoking gun pointing at
the iwl4695 driver in it?

[Bug 253990] [NEW] kernel oops: kernel NULL pointer :iwl4965:iwl4965_exit+0x10/0x19

2008-08-01 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to work around
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/244429 since no one is responding
to it and I can't put my computer onto wireless until it's fixed.

I downloaded http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download compat-
wireless-2.6.24.tar.bz2 on 2008-07-30, unpacked it, built it, and
installed it. When I type "make unload" to unload the buggy iwl4965
driver, the kernel generates the attached oops.

I expected the kernel to unload the driver so I could load the new
driver.

[Bug 244429] Re: kernel oops: invalid opcode 0000

2008-08-01 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I have downloaded the 2008-07-30 release of compat-
wireless-2.6.24.tar.bz2 from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download,
unpacked, built, installed, and rebooted to bring up the new drivers.

The output of /sbin/modprobe -l iwl4965 confirms that the system found
the new drivers.

I get essentially the same oops from this version of the driver. The
path name of the driver source in the attached oops has moved from:

/build/buildd/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-2.6.24/debian/build/build-
generic/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlwifi/compatible/iwl-4965.c

in the previous oops to:

generic/compat-wireless-2.6/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl-4965.c

[Bug 356019] [NEW] 30-keymap-lenovo.fdi patch for X200 Tablet

2009-04-05 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal-info

A patch for

  /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-lenovo.fdi

which adds a subsection for the x200 tablet and maps tablet bezel
buttons, function shift key, and menu key correctly.

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

hal-info:
  Installed: 20090324-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 20090324-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 20090324-0ubuntu1 0

The original mappings activate gnome-screensaver for a button with a
circular arrow on it, have no atkbd mapping at all for the button with a
lock on it, and generate XF86Wakeup for both the Fn shift and the Menu
keys.

The patch also includes comments about some other key/button mapping
oddities.

[Bug 159026] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad x41 Tablet and X60 Tablet rotate events

2009-04-10 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I'm going to confirm this and add the Lenovo X200 Tablet to the machines
referenced by this bug. These hotkey events have been available for
incorporation into acpi-support for years now, yet they still have to be
researched by users and added manually to make them work.

There are also two additional hotkey events emitted by the x200 tablet
which are mentioned above as unknown LID events. These are:

/etc/acpi/events/thinkpad-remove-stylus:
--
# Stylus removed from holder
event=ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 500c
action=/etc/acpi/thinkpad-remove-stylus.sh
--
/etc/acpi/events/thinkpad-replace-stylus
--
# Stylus replaced into holder
event=ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 500b
action=/etc/acpi/thinkpad-replace-stylus.sh
--

Could we perhaps get some centralized location for dealing with these
tablet problems in ubuntu? There are a lot of them, and the response
when filing bugs against the many different packages involved is
uninspiring. This bug has been active since October 2007, a debdiff was
requested and provided over a year ago, but nothing has happened, the
problem remains unaddressed, generations of Thinkpad tablets have come
and gone and Ubuntu remains a do-it-yourself project for owners of these
laptops.

The screen rotation daemon issue discussed above is a bug that has no
package to be filed against. To implement screen rotation you need to
catch the xrandr rotations, and the accelerometer clues, no matter what
source they originate from and generate tablet orientation and
configuration changes which effect the stylus/touch coordinate systems,
the pixel rendering, and the accelerometer orientation. This needs to
be solved for all tablet and convertible computers. I suspect that we
need a new /dev/input channel that collects and merges tablet
orientation/configuration information.

So, this is a bug in acpi-support, but also in hal-info, and also in a
non-existent package that takes care of making acpi-support and hal-info
do the right thing.

[Bug 355340] Re: [FFe] Please allow a new version of wacom-tools

2009-04-12 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
My problem with the wacom-tools-0.8.2.2 package with my x200 tablet has
been that it doesn't use the same names for stylus, eraser, and touch
devices so neither xsetwacom nor wacomcpl work at all. As a
consequence, none of the screen rotation scripts work, and I cannot
interactively recalibrate my tablet when it drifts.

The problem is that the hotplug named my tablet inputs as: 'PnP Device
(WACf008)', 'PnP Device (WACf008) touch', and 'PnP Device (WACf008)
eraser'. I found that out by running xinput, because 'xsetwacom list
dev' and wacomcpl both returned empty lists.

It turns out that I can fix those problems with a script that edits the
hal configuration before the xserver starts. (If you run the script
after the xserver starts, then the settings won't take effect until you
logout and allow the xserver to restart.)

I write /etc/init.d/wacom and link it as /etc/rc{2,3,4,5}.d/S27wacom, so
it runs after hal and before gdm:

# find any wacom devices
for udi in `hal-find-by-property --key input.x11_driver --string wacom`
do
type=`hal-get-property --udi $udi --key input.x11_options.Type`
# rewrite the names that the Xserver will use
hal-set-property --udi $udi --key info.product --string $type
case $type in
stylus|eraser)
# map stylus button 2 to mouse button 3
hal-set-property --udi $udi --key input.x11_options.Button2 --string 3
;;
esac
done

So that works for renaming the input devices back to what wacomcpl and
xsetwacom expect them to be, so rotation and interactive calibration
work, and it also enables context menus off the stylus button.

Now, some of those things can be fixed by changing the fdi file or
changing the way that the Xserver interprets the information it gets
from hal.

But, as gali98 points out, there are some configurations that can't be
easily specified in the fdi file. If I understand him correctly, I
could modify the fdi file to map the stylus button2 to button 3, but I
couldn't remap the eraser button in the fdi file because the eraser is a
sub-device.

So this gives us a place to put that sort of stuff until hal is taught
how to deal with these problems.

[Bug 130559] Re: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) - no sound

2007-10-06 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I confirm that this bug still exists in 2.6.22-13 on a dell latitude
d630.

I also confirm that it can still be cured by getting ftp://ftp.alsa-
project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.15rc3.tar.bz2, unpacking, and
running configure && make && sudo make install. (You will need to have
kernel headers and development packages installed.)

But there's a catch: the ubuntu distribution is putting the snd-hda-
intel.ko module in /lib/modules/2.6.22-13-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-
intel/snd-hda-intel.ko while the alsa-driver puts the module in
/lib/modules/2.6.22-13-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko, so
the "make install" installs the correct module but the old module is
still there. So, the first reboot still fails and generates a large
number of symbol mismatch errors in kern.log.

Further to confuse the issue, when you copy the correct module over the
old module, or simply delete the old module, the module dependencies are
still referring to the old version of snd-hda-intel.ko, so the next
reboot still fails and reports that snd_hda_intel failed to load the
symbol snd_hwdep_new. Go back and rerun the "sudo make install" to get
the right dependencies computed.

Better, remove the old version of snd-hda-intel.ko before you install
the recompiled alsa drivers and you should be good at the first reboot.

I did not need to specify any module options for snd_hda_intel to work.

[Bug 219669] [NEW] /etc/pulse/default.pa has hidden man page

The man page for the pulseaudio config file /etc/pulse/default.pa is

[Bug 194187] [NEW] livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-03-07 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

Attempting to install Hardy Alpha4 amd64 on Dell Latitude D630, NVIDIA
Quadro NVS 135M, 1440x900 screen.

If I allow the default "Start or install ubuntu" entry to run, with or
without specifying a VGA mode of 1440x900x32 using F4, I arrive at a
dialog titled "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" which offers me a
choice of configuring, continuing, or rebooting.

If I reconfigure at this point, choosing the nv display driver and the
correct screen resolution, a test succeeds perfectly, but nothing
happens when I continue from the dialog.

Switching to VT1 and examining logs, I found that gdm had exited because
there was already a gdm running. Ps axuw revealed two gdm processes
running at this point, one sleeping the other in state T.

Killing the existing gdm processes and running /etc/init.d/gdm start
brought up the desktop, but other parts of the system start had
apparently been skipped -- I couldn't get the NetworkManager deskbar
applet to respond.

I'll be happy to rerun this and retrieve any log information I can.

Re: [Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-04-04 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
The beta was set before the fix to the usplash was done, and I believe
the usplash bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147623) interfered
with the autodetect.

If there were a simple way to update the packages on the beta livecd
then I'd test this hypothesis, but apparently livecd's are built using
Gentoo. So I'll wait for the developers to release rc1.

The work around is to do the install in safe graphics mode. Then
after booting into the newly installed system and updating to most
recent packages you should get a prompt from System > Hardware Drivers
saying that there's a restricted driver for your hardware. Enable the
nvidia driver and you should be all set.

Doing an install in low graphics used to be impossible, but the
installer has been made to use windows that fit on a lowres screen.

[Bug 147623] Re: [amd64 + nvidia 8xxx] usplash shows nothing

Me, too.

Dell Latitude D630, NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 135M, 1440x900 screen, amd64

The System > Administration > Screens and Graphics control currently has
no nvidia driver listed as available (but it's the one that's running

[Bug 147623] Re: [amd64 + nvidia 8xxx] usplash shows nothing

2008-03-07 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Saïvann Carignan : Thank you for the mentoring.

I just checked this original problem out against the Hardy Alpha4 Livecd
and discovered something even more disturbing.

As above, this is a Dell Latitude D630, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M (GeForce
8 series), 1440x900 screen, amd64 Hardy Alpha4.

If I allow the default "Start or Install Ubuntu" entry to run, I get a
blank screen followed by the "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode"
dialog. This turns out to be a dead end on Alpha4 because gdm doesn't
get restarted properly after the dialog finishes. So no matter how you
reconfigure and test, you get no further.

If I choose the "Start in Safe Graphics Mode" option, I get a blank
screen and then to the livecd desktop in 800x600 pixel resolution. This
is a dead end for installing because the install windows are too tall,
unresizable, and their controls are off the bottom of the screen.

If I use F4 to choose my screen's resolution, and then choose "Start or
Install Ubuntu", I get a blank screen followed by the "Ubuntu is running
is low-graphics mode" dialog again.

If I use F4 to choose my screen's resolution, and use F6 to erase
"quiet" and "splash" from the boot options, then I get a less blank
screen (it's a lighter grey than the one the splash causes) followed by
a livecd desktop at 1440x900.

This is troubling because it shows that usplash doesn't just fail, its
failure is causing other things to fail as well.

[Bug 194124] [NEW] hardy alpha5 release page vs bug #147623

I wonder if that affects the differences in behavior you're seeing?

I also wonder why you're not seeing the problems reported in

[Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-03-07 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I'm sorry, perhaps the point of my report got lost in the details.

The Hardy Alpha4 amd64 livecd fails to boot to the desktop and dumps the
user into limbo.

I expected the livecd to boot to the desktop or explain why it wasn't
possible.

In what sense is this "not a bug"?

I have no support question, I explain in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/147623/comments/76
the contortions required to successfully boot Alpha4 on this hardware.

Re: [Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-03-07 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
It happens using the CD reliably.

(I suspect the same thing has happened after install, because I have been
put into the low-graphics dialog since installing. But I don't have a way
to reproducibly get to the low graphic mode configuration tool after
install.)

I've just finished verifying the exact same issue using the amd64 desktop
CDs for Gutsy, Hardy Alpha3, and Hardy Alpha4 and captured /var/log onto a
thumb drive for each of them.

In each case:

I took the default boot path, "Start or install ubuntu".
   No splash was displayed.
X started in low resolution presenting the "Ubuntu is running in
low-graphics mode".
I configured to use the nv driver and the 1440x900 display.
   I tested the configuration successfully
I then clicked the [OK] button on the config dialog.

The result was to drop me into a VT with the boot progress text displayed.
The last boot progress message displayed was:
---
* Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]
---
At this point, the boot has aborted and I switched to VT1 and tar'ed
/var/log onto a thumb drive.

The last entries in /var/log/daemon.log from the Gutsy boot are:
---
Feb 22 17:50:10 ubuntu gdm[8683]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal
X error - Restarting :0
Feb 22 17:50:14 ubuntu gdm[8829]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal

assertion `value->type == GDM_CONFIG_VALUE_BOOL' failed
Feb 22 17:53:08 ubuntu gdm[8979]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting!
---
The last entries in from the Hardy Alpha4 boot are:
---
Feb 22 18:32:31 ubuntu gdm[8563]: CRITICAL: gdm_config_value_get_bool:
assertion `value->type == GDM_CONFIG_VALUE_BOOL' failed
Feb 22 18:33:38 ubuntu gdm[8846]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting!
---
The end of /var/log/gdm/:0.log from the Hardy Alpha4 boot is:
---
configure
 * Stopping GNOME Display Manager... [ OK ]
 * Starting GNOME Display Manager... [fail]

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
"/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
---

It turns out that "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" is sufficient to fix things
at this point, the desktop comes up with the driver and resolution I
configured.

I can supply logs, or we can wait and see what Hardy Alpha5 produces.

[Bug 428591] [NEW] locks up machine

2009-09-12 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flightgear

Using the current release of 9.10 and flightgear, this application locks
up my machine. I click on the menu entry or run from a command line
shell, it opens a splash window, reports several stages of
initialization, starts an aircraft engine sound track, displays a menu
bar on the spash, and takes away the mouse cursor and all keyboard
response. The sound track continues, the system load goes to maximum,
but I can't change virtual consoles or get any keyboard or ui
interaction to work at all.

I've tried this with both amd64 and i386 installs of Karmic Koala, same
result.

With quick fingers, one can open a flightgear menu before the machine
locks up with the menu displayed.

[Bug 645351] Re: installing libusb-1.0 on x86_64 doesn't install the 32 bit library

2011-10-20 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Actually, it doesn't appear to install the 64 bit libraries, either.

In Synaptic, libusb-1.0 (version 2:1.0.8-4) is marked as installed, but
if you open the properties for the package to view the installed files,
you're told "The list of installed files is only available for installed
packages".

There's nothing that matches /usr/lib/libusb-1.0* installed.

I removed the cached package and reinstalled, a new package file was
downloaded, installed, same result.

Oddest package snafu I've ever seen.

Hmm, the package size is listed as 135 kb, but the download size is
listed as 28.9 kb, the cached package file is:

  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root28866 2011-07-27 06:09
libusb-1.0-0_2%3a1.0.8-4_amd64.deb

Go ahead and toss it.

The problem was in the HID driver for the joystick. I debugged the
problem, submitted a patch at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/618853, went
through the effort to build a second test kernel at the request of
https://launchpad.net/~jeremyfoshee, posted my results, he ignored it,
and marked it closed.

F**k you very much canonical, you can figure out your kernel bugs
without my volunteer assistance in the future.

[Bug 618853] [NEW] missing usb hid quirk for CH Products Joystick

2010-08-16 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
Public bug reported:

The CH Products Flightstick Pro USB joystick is recognized by the
system, but produces no input events after the first batch of synthetic
events. Research on the linux-usb mailing list found that several other
CH Products joysticks require a hid quirk to become fully functional. I
adapted earlier quirk patches to this joystick, patched linux-
source-2.6.32, built a custom kernel with the basename linux-
image-2.6.32.15+drm33.5, and tested that the patches do enable this
joystick to work correctly.

The patch is attached. It adds a new USB device id to the CH_PRODUCTS
group and then adds that device id to the list of CH_PRODUCTS joysticks
that require HID_QUIRK_NOGET.

I didn't explicitly set out to test against the upstream kernel, but
2.6.32.15+drm33.5 is the listed upstream kernel for the current Lucid
generic kernel that I have installed.

The joystick was tested with the flightgear flight simulator and the
jstest application from the joystick package.
