[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-12-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
There is now an upstream "near-final patch" for gvfs that is working well in
intrepid and which does not have the problems with unreachable bookmarks. It
requires an additional small patch to nautilus to work properly, though.
Details may be found at the upstream bug report (starting from comment 46):

[Bug 356702] Re: Jaunty: window switcher tooltips stick when they shouldn't

2009-06-11 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I confirm this bug in jaunty with compiz enabled. I'm used to frequently
switch from one virtual desktop to another and I find this bug extremely
annoying. Also disabling panel tooltips in gconf-editor
(/apps/panel/global/tooltips_enabled) does not help at all.

[Bug 342096] Re: SD Card containing /home corrupted on resume

2009-05-08 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I confirm this bug on a Dell mini9 with ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.
After resuming from a suspend with a mounted SHDC card, the partition table on
the card is corrupted.
This does not happen with the original ubuntu 8.04 shipped by Dell. Looking at
the config files of the Dell 8.04 and the Ubuntu 9.04 kernels I found these
relevant differences:

config-2.6.24-22-lpia (Ubuntu 8.04 Dell):
...
CONFIG_MMC=y
CONFIG_MMC_BLOCK=y
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI=y
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI_PCI=y
CONFIG_MMC_UNSAFE_RESUME=y
...

config-2.6.28-11-generic (ubuntu 9.04):
...
CONFIG_MMC=y
CONFIG_MMC_BLOCK=m
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI=m
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI_PCI=m
# CONFIG_MMC_UNSAFE_RESUME is not set
...

Then I build custom packages of 2.6.28-11 kernel and restricted-modules for
jaunty, using the CONFIG_MMC options of the Ubuntu 8.04 kernel and this solved
the problem for me.
(Community instructions for kernel compile are here:

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-05-11 Thread Renzo Bagnati
No, the issues of comment 220 are not present in jaunty and in intrepid.
They are specific of hardy and of the
95_svn_change_fix_smb_browsing.patch, since reverting to the version of
gvfs in hardy-updates restores the ability to browse the smb:/// Windows
Network (but not, of course, the domain shares).

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-05-07 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have tested the gvfs and nautilus packages in hardy-proposed. Here are the
problems I found (they are essentially the same described some time ago in the
upstream bug report:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485#c57

In virtualbox running ubuntu 8.04.2:

When the machine is not joined to an AD domain (LAB), opening the Network
Servers icon puts me in network:///, showing the "Windows Network" icon.
Clicking on "Windows Network" I enter smb:/// but nautilus reports: 0 objects
Inserting manually smb://LAB/ in the location bar I am asked for a password and
after inserting the credentials of a domain user I can access the list of the
machines. Share browsing can be done without problems.

When the machine is joined to an AD domain (LAB) and I login as a local
user the situation is as described above.

When the machine is joined to AD domain (LAB) and I login as a domain
user (with kerberos ticket), opening the Network Servers icon puts me
directly in smb://LAB. Share browsing can be done without problems (but
this was also possible without the patched gvfs).

So, with the proposed packages there are problems in browsing the
Windows Network (smb:///) with machines not joined to an AD domain or in
the absence of kerberos tickets. From the normal user point of view,
this situation is probably worse than before.

2009-04-29 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Sebastien,

looks like that in the current gvfs packages in hardy-proposed the
95_svn_change_fix_smb_browsing.patch was not really applied. The patch
file in the source contains a typo:

[Bug 293139] Re: NetworkManager does not use dhclient-exit-hooks.d, DNSSEC does not work

2008-11-05 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I can confirm this bug in intrepid.
I'm using a similar script in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient-exit-hooks.d to make a
ddnsupdate in my network and it is no more executed in intrepid. It was in
gutsy and hardy.
Removing network-manager or managing the relative interface in
/etc/network/interfaces solves the problem.
To reproduce the bug it is sufficient to activate the debug script in either
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d or /etc/dhcp3/dhclient-exit-hooks.d. The
/tmp/dhclient-script.debug file is not created.

[Bug 291846] Re: Design & implementation issues with new FUSA applet from Intrepid

2008-11-01 Thread Renzo Bagnati
With regard to point #4, here is a screenshot of what happens with the fusa
applet inside a network with hundreds of users (I have blurred the names in the
image to make them non-readable).
I can move the cursor between all names, but the window does not scroll, so
that after the first names I cannot see which one I'm choosing. There should be
scrollbars and a way to display names beginning with a few letters of choice.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-05-29 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have compiled gvfs 64-bit from source, as I have described in comment 20. If
you follow the instructions given here:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-sourcehandling.html
it is not that hard. Essentially you do this (you must have the deb-src lines
active in /etc/apt/sources.list):

$ sudo apt-get update
$ apt-get source gvfs

... apply the patch properly, then

$ sudo apt-get build-dep gvfs

(this takes care of installing all the build dependencies).
Finally, from inside the gvfs source directory):

$ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -uc -b

(this generates all the new .deb packages)

The most difficult part is installing the patch, the other commands take
care of everything else.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-01-06 Thread Renzo Bagnati
The upstream developer Tomas Bzatek has committed a gvfs-smb-browse-
auth.patch to gvfs-1.1.3:

* daemon/gvfsbackendnetwork.c:

Make smb-browse backend not automounted
Mount smb root on network backend automount

(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485#c67)

This patch requires another already committed patch to nautilus to work
properly.
The upstream bug report is now marked as RESOLVED - FIXED.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-06-15 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Steve, as described in comment 12, I'm using kerberos authentication
inside an ADS network and I have no problems with nautilus and gvfs.
However my setup is different from yours. The smb.conf is like this:

[global]
workgroup = LAB
realm = MYDOMAIN.COM
netbios name = %h-DEB
server string = %h-DEB (Samba %v, Ubuntu)
security = ADS
password server = dhcpias1.mydomain.com
restrict anonymous = 2
client NTLMv2 auth = Yes
client lanman auth = No
client plaintext auth = No
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
os level = 0
preferred master = No
local master = No
domain master = No
idmap domains = LAB
idmap config LAB: default = yes
idmap config LAB: backend = rid
idmap config LAB: range = 10-100
template shell = /bin/bash
winbind separator = _
winbind enum users = Yes
winbind enum groups = Yes
winbind use default domain = Yes
winbind refresh tickets = Yes
winbind offline logon = Yes
invalid users = root
[Share]
   comment = %h-DEB_Share
   path = /home/LAB/adsusername/Share
   valid users = LAB_adsusername, "@LAB_domain users", @users
   force user = LAB_adsusername
   read only = No

The PAM configuration has been changed by using this line in /etc/pam.d
/common-auth:

auth sufficient pam_winbind.so krb5_auth krb5_ccache_type=FILE
cached_login

This means that the login user is a domain user (not a local user) and that it
automatically acquires a kerberos ticket.
With this setup I'm able to browse with nautilus all network shares (including
the one of the local workstation) even without the gvfs patch from darkrain42.
So it seems that in my case gvfs is correctly using kerberos credentials and I
wonder if your problem may be related to something else than the gvfs patch.
If necessary, I can post the complete configuration of my workstation, but at
the moment I will not be able to do other test inside the ADS network until
next week.

Thank you, Steve, for the patch and for your other suggestions. I think that
the patch is implementing the right fallback sequence. I will be able to test

I will also surely remove the 'restrict anonymous = 2' option from samba
configuration, although it is not causing problems after a kerberos
authentication. In any case I don't have problems in allowing anonymous
browsing.

2009-07-15 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Thank you very much, Steve, for fixing this bug.
I have applied your patch by recompiling gvfs from source and now the browsing
of the network and of the shares is working as expected.
However I'm still experiencing a known issue with nautilus: double clicking the
first time on a share icon does not open a new window, I have to double click
again a second time to actually open it. This should have been fixed by the
91_svn_change_new_mounts_correctly_displayed.patch reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/251809/comments/47
Looking at the changelogs of the nautilus version in hardy I did not find a

nautilus 1:2.22.5.1-0ubuntu2
I was already using it with all hardy-updates. However, since I was still
seeing that behaviour, I tried to build nautilus from source. This is the
relevant output of dpkg-buildpackage:

...
Applying patch 90_from_svn_dont_allow_recursive_copies.patch
patching file libnautilus-private/nautilus-file-operations.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 3352 (offset 131 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 3412 (offset 131 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 3974 (offset 131 lines).

...

The 91_svn_change_new_mounts_correctly_displayed.patch file actually
patches itself, instead of the file which was supposed to (nautilus-
mime-actions.c).

[Bug 356702] Re: tooltips stick when they shouldn't

2009-07-16 Thread Renzo Bagnati
This bug is not excusively related to tooltips about drag and drop of windows
between viewports, but also to other general type of tooltips.
For example, when I switch from a workspace containing a terminal windows to
one containing firefox (with this page open) I get a persistent tooltip on the
panel saying:
Bug #356702 in libwnck (Ubuntu). "tooltips

[Bug 63615] Re: (kdm) wrong keyboard behavior at first login

2006-10-18 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have installed kubuntu on a new machine. The bug was not present at the
beginning but appeared after a few reboot.
I had always appended the following option in the "kernel" line of
/boot/grub/menu.lst:
vga=791
After removing this option the bug disappeared (this also happened on another
machine).
I have also noted that when the bug is present the tty fonts are *not* the same
as they are without the bug.
Without the bug the fonts are like in dapper, but some programs like 'mc' look
strange and garbled. When the bug is present the tty fonts are different, but
the 'mc' panels are correctly displayed.

Yes, moving S13kdm to S99kdm also works on my system. This is because I can see

[Bug 26338] Re: Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords

2007-10-22 Thread Renzo Bagnati
In reply to comment 67 (Yann Rouillard):

I don't know if I have to file a separate bug for the behaviour I have
described. Maybe some other developer can say that.
After all, the fact is that system-tools-backend is not able to behave
correctly as do the command line utilities in all the situations described for
this bug.
It seems that no one had problems with "adduser" and "deluser". So my question
is: why don't make system-tools-backend act as a simple front-end to that
commands? Is there any operation that the command line utilities are not able
to do? Or are there other motivations?
By the way, I can confirm that the bug is still present after a fresh
installation of gutsy.

Sebastien: I found no issues with kerberos, I was only pointing out that
acquiring a ticket at login allows subsequent browsing of password
protected shares, because of the credentials already acquired. Infact
this is also true after using the package likewise-open to join the AD
domain, probably because it does the same type of authentication.

[Bug 212340] Re: [hardy] 2.6.24-15 fails to boot with saa7134(?)

2008-04-10 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I booted my machine with kernel 2.6.24-15.27-generic, after removing the quiet
and splash option.
This time the boot process did not stop, but I was presented with the screen
showing the failsafe mode for X. The video card, the sound card and the network
card were not recognized.
This behaviour is slightly different from what happened with
2.6.24-15.26-generic (described in comment 6), but the dmesg.log show the same
errors about the saa7134 module. They were already reported in the attachment
of comment 6, as the boot process restarted after 3-4 min of pause, and are
similar to those reported by Sylvain.
Booting again with kernel 2.6.24-14.25-generic shows no problems.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-05-01 Thread Renzo Bagnati
To apply the patch you have to recompile gvfs from source. Instructions on how
to do it can be found here:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-sourcehandling.html

After dowloading the sources you have to apply the gvfs.patch using the
'patch' command ('man patch', for instructions). However, some manual
editing of the patch file may be needed, because it was made for an
older gvfs version. But it should work also with the latest version.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-04-14 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Acquiring a kerberos ticket from an AD server, using pam_winbind at login (or
using kinit in a shell), allows a user to browse samba shares with its cached
credentials.
This is described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto#head-a1da1a136c89873cbd7c7a1e1fbd75d621d18c9a

Maybe gvfs expects to find this or other authentications, but in any case this
behaviour is different from what happened with gnomevfs in previous releases.
Users should be aware of this.
I still think that a gvfs patch is needed to ask for a password when it is
required, indipendently of kerberos tickets.

[Bug 26338] Re: Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords

2007-09-07 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I've experienced this bug in the following situation:

at my workplace I've set up several machines running Ubuntu 7.04 and which are
integrated in an Active Domain Network controlled by a Windows Server. I did
this using samba, kerberos and winbind, and now these machines can be used with
local and domain accounts (domain accounts are not listed in /etc/passwd but are
managed by winbind).
To allow some domain accounts to gain administrative privileges I added them
manually to the admin group with 'adduser'.
After that, if you use System -> Administration -> Users and Groups to add a new
user, all the domain users (not local users) which were granted admin rights
will lose their privileges. This happens because they are deleted from the admin
group in /etc/group.
The problem does not occur when using the command line utility (adduser).

I have verified that the Epson Perfection 1260 Photo (ID 04b8:011d) is

scanbuttond workaround (but there are still problems with the TPA
adapter, which doesn't work as well).

However I don't own an Epson Perfection 1250, I only guessed from its
similarity to the 1260 and from other Epson model which have been

[Bug 164475] Re: users-admin deletes privileges granted to ADS domain users with the command line utility (adduser)

2008-03-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have reproduced the bug today in hardy, after a dist-upgrade to current
packages.
Adding a new local user deletes the privileges granted to a domain user by the
command line utility.
The difference in hardy is that when you try to delete the newly created user,
it is not really removed from /etc/passwd and /etc/group.
This seems to me as a new bug in gnome-system-tools...

The integration in active directory was made following the documentation
reported at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto

I did not try, until now, what happens if the ADS integration is made
using the new 'likewise-open' package.

>From apparmor man page:
"AppArmor is a kernel enhancement to confine programs to a limited set of

attributes to programs rather than to users."

You may want to reinstall the package (and apparmor-utils) and find the way to
configure it to allow printing with the lbp660 driver. The driver probably
needs to write to some directory or device to which is not allowed by
apparmor's default settings.
Read the man page, it has instructions to put the apparmor application in
'enforcement' or 'complain' mode and to find the appropriate error messages.
In the meanwhile, when you need to print, you can stop the apparmor service
with:
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop
and restart it with:
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor start

[Bug 193232] Re: Remote Samba shares not showing up in Nautilus through network:///

2008-03-20 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I am experiencing a similar problem with hardy installed in a virtual machine
and with up-to-date packages.
When I try to browse machines in a mixed environment some of them do not show
any shared folders in nautilus.
The network is using ADS and is controlled by a windows 2003 server.
Machines running windows XP, windows 2003 and samba show '0 objects' in
nautilus, but after inserting the complete path (eg.: smb://server/share) the
folders can be accessed after the password prompt.
Machines running windows 2000 show their folders regularly.
I have observed the same behaviour using a hardy-alfa6-live CD, without any
editing of smb.conf or other configurations.
In the same network environment there are several machines, running ubuntu
gutsy and debian etch, which do not have similar problems.

I suppose you mean "workgroup".
In my case, when using the hardy-alfa6-live CD the box was not in the same
workgroup as the others.
However, the virtual machine running up-to-date hardy was integrated in the
same domain of all other network machines (including those running gutsy and
debian, which do not show the bug). The ADS integration was done using winbind,
kerberos and PAM libraries, essentially as described here:

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-04-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have recompiled gvfs sources with Paul's patch and indeed it works inside my
ADS network.
Tested with nautilus in all the cases I have reported and found no problems. A
password prompt is displayed when needed, and all the machines can be browsed.
Now I really hope that this bug can be solved before the final release of
hardy, otherways it will make it difficult to use hardy inside many networks
that require browsing authentication. I think also that this bug should have a
high priority.

2008-03-27 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Yes, when using nautilus in gutsy a password is requested for browsing the
machines in cases 1 and 2, but not in case 3.
I checked it also with a gutsy live CD, because the presence of gnome-keyring
does make it difficult to say if browsing a share requires or not a password.
So the problem in hardy is that nautilus does not ask for it. In case 3 it
shows the shares because they are browseable without password.

Finally I found that removing the 'ppdev' kernel module (rmmod ppdev) solved
the problem.
This module was not automatically loaded in edgy, but I have read that it has
been introduced in feisty to allow automatic detection of parallel printers.
I tried this also for an Epson Perfection 1260 (plustek backend) and it works
too.
So maybe that the problem is not the 'USB selective suspend/resume and wakeup'
option but the 'ppdev' kernel module.

[Bug 44024] Re: Window dragging display corruption

2006-12-15 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I changed the dependencies in rdesktop 1.5 in this way:

- download rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb from a debian mirror
  (now is also available in ubuntu feisty)
- do the following on a terminal window:
  dpkg -x rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386
  dpkg -e rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386/DEBIAN
- then edit rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386/DEBIAN/control and change these
  lines:

  Version: 1.5.0-1
  to
  Version: 1.5.0-1a

  Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libssl0.9.8 (>= 0.9.8c-1), libx11-6
  to
  Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), libssl0.9.8 (>= 0.9.8), libx11-6

- rebuild the package with:
  dpkg -b rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386
- and finally install it with:
  sudo dpkg -i rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386.deb

This is not a usual or recommended method of rebuilding packages
(changing dependencies may be dangerous), but it's the faster one and
worked for me in this particular case...

[Bug 512459] [NEW] Winbind failed to connect to AD: Program lacks support for encryption type

2010-01-25 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Public bug reported:

I'm using lucid alfa-2 and when I try to join the machine to an AD

[Bug 430713] Re: mountall loops indefinitely on fsck failure

2009-09-21 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Well, if this is the correct behaviour, then I still wonder why the fsck loop
lasts so long. The first time it happened to me I observed the same messages
pass on the screen for at least 5 minutes. I resisted the temptation to press
the reset key, but I suspect that most users would have pressed it before the
shell prompt.
In a similar situation in jaunty what you get is a single advice that the
filesystem has errors.

[Bug 529696] Re: brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2010-06-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Upstream developers have already stated in comment 4 of the relative bug
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617222) that:
"it turns out that cdrdao 1.2.2 recognizes "cdrdao version" as an illegal
command and since brasero expect a precise string for parsing version, and in
the case of 1.2.2 it does not get it, it fails."
and that:
"The plugin associated with cdda2wav was designed to work with the cdda2wav
coming from the cdrtools package. Up until now, it would refuse to work if it
turned out cdda2wav was a symlink Now I turned off this mechanism just for
cdda2wav plugin in next version which means that it should work with a symlink
to icedax now".

So it seems that the kernel has nothing to do with this bug and we need
updated versions of brasero and cdrdao to solve it.
