[Bug 378683] Re: hibernate/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2010-03-16 Thread Paul Price
Hi Jeremy.

Thanks for getting back to us (even if automated). I've just checked,
and this problem still remains, with the same symptoms as before. I'd
prefer not to have to upgrade my machine to a development version. Can
I get back easily and safely, or, better yet, install it in parallel
with Karmic? I tried the mainline kernel and got an OOPS within a
couple of seconds.

Thanks,

Paul.

[Bug 573919] Re: autofs doesn't work with lucid

2010-05-18 Thread Paul Price
I also have this problem under Ubuntu 10.04LTS.
Running the automounter manually (thanks onkara), on attempting to change to an
NFS-mounted directory, I noticed:

>> mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
>> mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.

On starting statd ("sudo start statd") and autofs ("sudo start autofs"),
the automounter is now working.

Neither autofs nor statd appear to be in /etc/rc?.d/

[Bug 476132] [NEW] gdm-simple-greeter fails to start

2009-11-05 Thread Paul Price
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I am trying to set up xdmcp, but I cannot get a greeter screen.

I have in /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

[daemon]
RemoteGreeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdm-simple-greeter

But on restarting gdm, I have in the daemon.log:

Nov 5 17:27:05 neverland gdm-simple-slave[3514]: WARNING: Unable to connect to
display ::1:1

Nov 5 17:35:30 neverland gdm-simple-greeter[5002]: WARNING: Unable to start
greeter session: GDM_GREETER_DBUS_ADDRESS not set

Some similar lines appear in bug 399858, which is marked a duplicate of
395460, but if that is the problem, then it is still present here.

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (upgraded today; have rebooted a few times).

[Bug 378683] Re: hibernate/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-11-07 Thread Paul Price
I have this problem too on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. It is present
in Karmic, and not in Jaunty.

I am not using nvidia drivers:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon
Xpress 200M]

I'm happy to provide further information as requested.

[Bug 378683] Re: hibernate/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-11-07 Thread Paul Price
Working through the DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernate sequence:

Is this really a failure? Yes: machine was connected to AC power all
the way through hibernate and resume. There is no reason to suspect a
machine problem.

Is this a repetition of a previous failure? Not that I know of.

Did the machine break while going to sleep or waking up? While waking
up. The machine happily boots, displays a blank screen with glowing
white Ubuntu logo, then blanks and nothing happens.

Is it reproducible? Yes, though I think I can remember once when it
resumed fine, yet the problem occurs more than half (probably > 80%) of
the time.

Did it work before? Hibernate/resume worked in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. It
failed after I upgraded to Karmic.

Do you end up with flashing caps-lock or similar? I have not noticed,
but I haven't looked for it. I will look for it next time.
