[Bug 138691] Re: system hangs at shutdown

2008-11-17 Thread Paul L.
Philipp Kern wrote on 2008-06-25:

kernel settings

Not true here. I have a Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 (dual-core T2060,
1024MB DDR2 SDRAM) and due to the (know) buggy BIOS, the boot time
kernel option acpi=off must be included or I don't have working sound.
And I have the "System halted" as the final displayed message on
shutdown, and the laptop does not turn off - I have to do that manually
with the power button.

[Bug 83471] Re: [pata-pcmcia] failed to set xfermode

2008-08-11 Thread Paul L.
IT WORKS!

Okay, as a subscriber to this bug, I received the notice about migrating
the bug to the new "linux" package. So, I downloaded and burned the
LiveCD of Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 (Kubuntu) today. I'm running it from the
LiveCD at the moment. I pulled out my Kingston 5GB pcmcia HD and plugged
it in to the pcmcia slot, and viola, there it is under New Device
Notifier! Click on the device icon and it opens with Dolphin. This is
the first time since Edgy Eft that I've been able to access this device!
I'm so happy

What ever was done, please ensure that it is retained throughout the
development process, and particularly, in the final release. I'm
attaching the dmseg file.

[Bug 254347] [NEW] multiple kate sessions running after login

2008-08-02 Thread Paul L.
Public bug reported:

Hardy Heron running KDE 4.1.00

Starting today - August 1, 2008 - logging in from KDM results in
multiple open sessions of Kate, all with an empty document. It started
with four such sessions. It's now up to six.

The only 'fix' is to remove the hidden .kde4 folder in the users home
directory, and, you have to do so from outside of a running X/KDM
session. Removing the folder from within the current session results in
a 'new' .kde4 folder being created instantly.

I had to reboot into one of my other Kubuntu installations and delete
the .kde4 folder in HH KDE 4.1.00. Performing a shutdown are reboot back
into HH KDE 4.1.00 resulted in no running sessions of Kate. Yet later
this same day, the behavior returned. The only thing that was done 'on
the system' was to run Adept Manager and later, apt-get.

I'm not sure this behavior is a KDM issue, but

[Bug 254347] Re: multiple kate sessions running after login

2008-08-02 Thread Paul L.
Reviewing https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage gave me some
insight into looking for evidence of what's happening. I looked at my
.xsessions-errors file, filtered through grep on kate and found
interesting things! I moved the file and logged out and rebooted. This
ensured a new .xsession-errors file would be created. When I logged in
through KDM and the desktop loaded, kate launched seven instances - up
by one since I logged this bug. I killed them all and then made a copy
of the new .xsessions-errors file, which is attached (xsession-
errros200808022151). It also contains interesting entries, like these:

[Bug 254347] Re: multiple kate sessions running after login

2008-08-03 Thread Paul L.
That is interesting! Before you posted your comment, I had noticed that the
.krunnerrc file appeared to contain corruption:
"headerState=\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0b\\\x02\x00\x00\x00\x05\x00\x00\x00\t\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x06\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x04\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x03\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x02\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x02^\x00\x00\x00\x0b\x01\x01\x00\x01\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\t\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x03\x00\x00\x00d\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x03\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x001\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x008\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00Q\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\x00"
 (my quotes)

I moved it to .krunnerrc_BORKED and shutdown/restarted my system. This
time only one instance of kate appeared. I looked, and no new .krunnerrc
had been created. So, I believe that this corrupted (?) file was
contributing to the problem. With it 'out of the picture' things are
'better' in that only one instance of kate. Hmmm.

I looked at the .xsession-errors, filtered through grep on krunner and
kate, and this is what I got:

kdeinit4: Got EXEC_NEW '/usr/lib/kde4/bin/krunner' from launcher.
kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/kde4/bin/krunner
kate(6226): createDoc

kate(6226) KateViewDocumentProxyModel::updateBackgrounds: false
kate(6226) KateViewDocumentProxyModel::updateBackgrounds: false
kate(6226) KateViewDocumentProxyModel::updateBackgrounds: true

The warning about the missing "default.katesession" file is interesting.
The specified LOCAL SESSION DIR does in fact contain this file, as well
as a "Default Session.katesession" The sizes and contents are identical,
but the time stamps are different, in my case, default.katesession was
created today at 23:13 hours and "Default Session.katesession" was
created today at 22:56 hours.

[Bug 323782] [NEW] the process for the trash protocol died unexpectedly

2009-01-31 Thread Paul L.
Public bug reported:

Running Kubuntu 8.10 on i386 platform (Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147).
Upgraded from KDE 4.1.4 to KDE 4.2.00. Upon rebooting, and after logging
in through KDM, I get a pop-up error notification:

Error - Plasma Workspace
The process for the trash protocol died unexpectedly.

Only option is to acknowledge the error (OK) and the notification goes
away. The trashcan icon is on my panel. About Trashcan shows Version 1.0
Using KDE 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0)

I can delete items and they go into the trashcan. I can open the
trashcan - left-click (opens as it should with Dolphin). I can empty the
trashcan - right-click > Empty Trashcan - without any issues.

I'd like to know whats causing the error message and what to do to
correct/fix it.

[Bug 215450] Re: Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast not working u(Hardy 8.04)

2009-07-13 Thread Paul L
I was going to raise this as a separate bug but might be related here. I
installed Ubuntu server 9.04 on a PIII with an old 3com network card.
Everything worked with the card recognised and using eth0 but I discovered it
was only connecting at 10 meg. I discovered this is a known issue and found it
too much hassle to change the settings on the card. Easier to replace it with a
new card. The new card was from Maplin in the UK and has the Realtek chipset. I
put the card in the same PCI slot as the 3com and booted up to find the network
not working. Without labouring this, for some reason the card is allocated eth1
during bootup. There is a line saying:
udev: renamed eth0 to eth1
I renamed eth0 to eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces, restarted networking with
/etc/inet.d/networking restart, and the network now works normally at 100 meg.
I assume the system has some memory of the old card and for that reason is
allocating eth1 but is not updating the interfaces file to match.

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-10-10 Thread Paul L.
Last night, I booted both, Kubuntu Dapper Drake LiveCD and later,
Kubuntu Edgy Eft LiveCD. Both releases correctly identified my PCMCIA
hard drive (KINGSTON DP-PCM2/5GB, V2.11 B, max PIO2). I only had to add
entries to the /etc/fstab for it, run sudo mount -a and I had access to
the device.

Kubuntu Feisty Fawn 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC
2007 i686 GNU/Linux does not, as these bug posts attest, work in
properly identifying and setting up this PCMCIA hard drive. So,
something was done to the kernel (?) when Feisty was released.

I see that this bug report is still listed as STATUS Incomplete and
IMPORTANCE Undecided. What is it going to take to get this problem off
of dead center and fixed?

[Bug 153636] Re: systemsettings crashing in KDE 3.5.8

2007-10-20 Thread Paul L.
I too, have this issue. I upgraded KDE yesterday from 3.5.6 to 3.5.8. K
Menu | System Settings now crashes on launch with SIGSEGV. Backtrace was
useless. I did install (afterwards) kdelibs-dbg and kdebase-dbg, but the
backtrace results still only report:

(no debugging symbols found)
 Using host libthread_db library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
 [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
 [New Thread -1232553760 (LWP 18463)]
 [KCrash handler]
 #5 0x0805bd7d in ?? ()
 #6 0x0810ca10 in ?? ()
 #7 0x in ?? ()

K Menu | System Settings was working fine in 3.5.6. I can still access
the separate application with Alt+F2 and running kcontrol.

So what's causing the problem?? What changed in 3.5.8 that is causing
the problem??

2007-10-20 Thread Paul L.
As a note. With kdelibs-dbg and kdebase-dbg packages installed, running
backtrace does show four additional entries (#1, #2, etc), but you can't
capture them - the screen clears and the previously posted trace result
is all you get.

[Bug 153636] Re: systemsettings crashing in KDE 3.5.8

2007-11-08 Thread Paul L.
I confirm that moving the file system-settings-merge.menu from
/etc/xdg/menus/kde-applications-merged to /etc/xdg/menus/applications-
merged works. Please mark this bug as confirmed and note the "fix" that
corrects it. Please have the developers move this into production for an
update to KDE 3.5.8

[Bug 189381] [NEW] Kmixer cannot be found

2008-02-05 Thread Paul L.
Public bug reported:

Running Kubuntu Gutsy 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP

The following packages were identified by Adept Notifier for upgrade last night
(2008-02-04):
linux-headers-2.6.22-14
linux-headers-2.6.22-14-generic
linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic
linux-libc-dev

After these packages were downloaded and installed, Kmix was still working
(working sound, system tray icon was normal). Performed a normal shutdown of
the system. After restarting my PC, sound is no longer working. The KMix icon
shows in the system tray with a red X. Placing the mouse cursor on the icon
shows "KMixer cannot be found". sudo find -name kmix* (from the root directory)
shows that all the kmix* files are present. Adept Manager reports that kmix is
installed. From a console however, echo $PATH shows:
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
According to a fellow Kubuntu Forums member, who also upgraded these files but
has not restarted his system, his echo $PATH shows:
/home/rog/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
(note that his user home directory is included at the beginning of the path).

Does this mean, that Hardy Heron will properly see/access the
PCMCIA HD? Why isn't the fix being applied to Gutsy and Feisty?

This mean the patch is available for latest stable kernel ( version
2.6.24 ) but not included to gutsy kernel ( 2.6.22 ) due ubuntu kernel
policy.

[Bug 30207] Re: media:/ does not handle floppy mounting correctly

2007-06-25 Thread Paul L.
I've been looking for this answer, and here it is!

I have Kubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04) installed from LiveCD (no upgrade) on an
Intel based i386 laptop (Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147). I have a USB floppy
drive connected to a USB seven-port hub. I was unable to mount and access any
inserted diskette. My /etc/fstab entry for the device is:
/dev/sdd/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto 0 0
The only way I could mount and access the floppy, with a diskette inserted, was
to open a root Konsole and mount it manually. The work-around fix by Arc at
permalink
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/30207/comments/45 was
tried, and it worked. I didn't like that it opened up all the HDs and their
partitions for access, so I opted to use Maini Marco's suggestion with a slight
modification. I access my floppy drive (with inserted diskette) by typing
media:/sdd/ in the location bar. This mounts and opens the floppy drive
diskette.

This basic issue needs to be given a high priority for fixing. One
should not have to go to this trouble to simply have access to ones USB
floppy drive.

[Bug 519690] Re: xerox usb printer not recognized in Ubuntu 9.10

2010-03-29 Thread Paul L.
I reported basically, the same 'bug' on the KDE Bug Tracking System
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214932). My Panasonic KX-P4410
printer, connected to one of my laptops USB ports in Kubuntu Karmic
Koala 9.10 simply isn't recognized by CUPS, so I can't configure it.
This same printer, same laptop, same USB port, in Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04
works just fine.

Just to confirm, this problem/bug remains in Kubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04

burned last night. It is really a PITA not to have a functioning USB

Why then, with the same printer, connected to the same laptop,
running Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04, does the printer work? Something
changed between the Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 release and Kubuntu
Karmic 9.10, either with the main OS or with something in KDE. My
printer issue appeared in Karmic and continues in Lucid.

I'd be more than happy to boot into Jaunty and run the same five
commands and post the results for you.

Yes, it's an old printer - very old (over ten years now), but it works like a

[Bug 468701] Re: Cups on Ubuntu Karmic does not recognize USB printer

2010-05-03 Thread Paul L.
Tim, your a God send! You're recommendation worked!! I have my printer
again!!!

I set it up in CUPS as follows:

Administration > Add Printer > Local Printer > HP Printer (HPLIP) >
Connection: parallel:/dev/usb/lp0

Gave it a name, description, and location and then selected the Printer
and model and selected the driver to use, in my case, Panasonic KX-P4410
Foomatic/ljet2p (recommended).

Did a test print. Works great!

Set it as the default printer in Kubuntu (it doesn't get set by default
there).

I've been without my printer since the installing Kubuntu Karmic 9.10. I
kept Karmic Jaunty 9.04 largely because it had a working printer.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!! You've helped to make my new
system complete.

Paul

Selecting ljet2p (recommended) and clicking Forward and Apply results in
the printer being 'added' but it fails to print. It isn't permitting the

works flawlessly.

What can I provide that might aid in getting this bug fixed?

[Bug 416073] Re: [i965] [karmic][GM965] low intel graphics performance - again

2009-11-09 Thread Paul L.
Running Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 KDE 4.3.2. My Graphics consist of:

In Kubuntu Karmic 10.04, desktop performance is 'not good' and I have no
compositing. I had to return to Jaunty.

[Bug 1299499] Re: kwin crashes on desktop startup with wobbly windows enabled

2014-03-29 Thread Paul L.
Kubuntu: 14.04
KDE: 4.12.95
Kernel: 3.13.0-20-generic x86_64

With this kernel, using OpenGL 1.2, 2.0, or 3.1 crashes KWin.

If I use kernel 3.13.0-19-generic x86_64, I can use OpenGL 1.2 and 2.0
without any problems; KWin does not crash.

[Bug 1301570] Re: OpenGL crashes KWin with 3.13.0-21 kernel

2014-04-02 Thread Paul L.
The attached files generated while running the 3.13.0-21 kernel, using
XRender. If needed, I'll change from XRender to OpenGL, generating the
KWin crash, and run ubuntu-bug linux.

[Bug 1301570] [NEW] OpenGL crashes KWin with 3.13.0-21 kernel

2014-04-02 Thread Paul L.
Public bug reported:

On my 64-bit installation, setting OpenGL 1.2, 2.0, or 3.1 when using
kernel 3.13.0-21 causes KWin to crash. I'm forced to use XRender
instead.

This is also occurs using kernel 3.13.0-20.

OpenGL 1.2 and 2.0 works fine and does not crash KWin when using kernel
3.13.0-19.

On my 32-bit installation, OpenGL 1.2 and 2.0 works fine with KWin when
using any of these three kernels.

That is included in my comments in the bug. But, that last 64-bit kernel that
works with OpenGL is 3.13.0-19.

Thank you! Your 'fix' worked for me on Kubuntu 14.10 (KDE 4.14.2) kernel
3.16.0-31-generic. This issue had me stumped for months. Very happy to
have everything working now.

[Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-27 Thread Paul L.
This 'bug' also affects me. Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit, kernel
3.11.0-13-generic, KDE 4.11.2.

The problem, as I see it, is that the files:

org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate

don't exist in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/ and in fact, don't exist
anywhere on my laptop, so how can
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
work without them? I'd think not, but...

I've followed the instructions in #13 and I have the Suspend to Disk in
Leave options. I'm going to open several apps and use Suspend to Disk
and then reboot afterwards and see if it works. I'm suspecting it wont.
I'll report back.

[Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-27 Thread Paul L.
Nope. I get Grub and KDM login. Once logged in to KDM, my desktop is
empty -- it doesn't repopulate "as I had it" when I hibernated. What is
interesting though, is that launching my browser (Chromium) it reports
that it wasn't closed properly and do I want to restore the session. I
ignore the message and click on the Home icon and I'm still logged into
the forum (my Home page is a forum). Also, returning here via History,
I'm also still logged in. That would tell me that the cookies were
retained by the hibernate, but nothing else.

[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-11-02 Thread Paul L.
>From reply #13:

According to SteveRiley, on the Kubuntu Forum, if you enable "All users
may connect to this network" in the settings, then the connection does
autoconnect. I tried this once or twice with my wifi networks and it
seems to work.

https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?66702-NetworkManagement-
widget-not-connecting-to-wifi-automatically&p=361413

This does not work for me.

PC: HP Pavilion g7-1070us 64-bit i3
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless
Network Adapter (rev 01)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E
PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 05)

I was running Kubuntu 14.04.1 w/KDE 4.14.2 perfectly on this laptop. I
was fully dist-upgraded and did a release upgrade from the console:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d

When it finished and I rebooted, network-manager did not auto-start.
Before the KDM login screen, these two messages were presented:

Waiting for network configuration...

then after awhile,

Waiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration...

At the end of the 60 seconds, KDM login screen presented and I logged
in. I had no network connections. Running sudo service network-manager
start from the console started both my ethernet and wireless
connections.

Editing both connections and marking "All users may connect to this
network" in the settings DOES NOT servive a logout/reboot. I really
would like to know why, and how to remedy this.

The only thing I can point to is the message that a 'fatal error
occured' right at the end of the release-upgrade process:

Total disk space freed by localepurge: 0 KiB

Error in function:

[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-11-02 Thread Paul L.
SOLVED!!!

The hint to the solution was the content of networking.log:

run-parts: failed to exec /etc/network/if-up.d/static-routes: Exec format error
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/static-routes exited with return code 1
Failed to bring up lo.
run-parts: failed to exec /etc/network/if-up.d/static-routes: Exec format error
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/static-routes exited with return code 1
ifup: post-up script failed.

So I compared the /etc/network/if-up.d directories on my working 32-bit
and 64-bit laptops. The difference was a single executable file on the
64-bit affected laptop but not on the unaffected 32-bit laptop:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 351 Oct 17 16:25 static-routes

Which contains:

ip route add unreachable 10.0.0.0/8 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 172.16.0.0/12 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 192.168.0.0/16 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 169.254.0.0/16 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 192.0.2.0/24 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 198.51.100.0/24 metric 999
ip route add unreachable 203.0.113.0/24 metric 999

I removed the executable bit (sudo chmod -x) and logged out and
rebooted. My network was auto-started as it should!! I don't know why
the release-upgrade put it there (I assume it did), but it was the
culprit in this fiasco.

[Bug 1301570] Re: OpenGL crashes KWin with 64-bit 3.13.0-21 kernel

2014-04-05 Thread Paul L.
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

On my 64-bit installation, setting OpenGL 1.2, 2.0, or 3.1 when using
kernel 3.13.0-21 causes KWin to crash. I'm forced to use XRender
  instead.

This is also occurs using kernel 3.13.0-20.

OpenGL 1.2 and 2.0 works fine and does not crash KWin when using kernel
  3.13.0-19.

On my 32-bit installation, OpenGL 1.2 and 2.0 works fine with KWin when
using any of these three kernels.

[Bug 1301570] Re: OpenGL crashes KWin with 64-bit 3.13.0-21 kernel

2014-04-05 Thread Paul L.
Well, better more than less?! Looks like I updated this report twice
today. The additions are while I am running on the 3.13.0-19-generic
kernel with OpenGL 2.0 selected (and working properly).

[Bug 1301570] WifiSyslog.txt

2014-04-05 Thread Paul L.
apport information

** Attachment added: "WifiSyslog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1301570/+attachment/4067019/+files/WifiSyslog.txt
