[Bug 253412] [NEW] Update Manager should allow checking for different kinds of updates at different intervals

2008-07-30 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-properties-gtk

I want security updates to be checked for daily, and installed
automatically, but I only want to be notified of Recommended Updates
once a week. In Software Sources > Updates I have to pick every day, or
every week - it doesn't let me make this distinction.

[Bug 253415] [NEW] Removable Drives and Media doesn't let me tell F-Spot not to launch when a USB drive containing photos is inserted

2008-07-30 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

When I insert a USB drive with pictures on it, F-Spot automatically
starts, and I don't want it to. Removable Drives and Media Preferences
lets me choose what to do when I connect a digital camera, but not when
I plug in a USB drive containing photos. I don't see an option to
change this in F-Spot either.

[Bug 147150] Re: Mixed-mode CDs not automounted nor hinted for mounting

2008-07-30 Thread Omegamormegil
Yes, I have the same problem. On Windows, when inserting an Audio CD
with music videos on it, you are given the opportunity to watch them.
When inserting the same CD in Ubuntu, you have no way of knowing that
there is additional data content on the CD. The only way I've found to
watch the videos is to remount the disk to the file system manually.

Re: [Bug 225974] Re: gnome-screensaver switch user dialog box buttons don't work after logging out

2009-05-14 Thread Omegamormegil
Yes, I can confirm that this bug still exists. It can be challenging to
duplicate. The first Jaunty system I tried worked fine, but following Louis
Simard's steps below (immediately after creating a new user - I don't know
if that's part of it) this bug occured in Jaunty (happens to be Ubuntu
Netbook Remix this time). This system was not upgraded from Intrepid.

Additionally, as I'm testing this, the dialog box with non working buttons
was left on the screen for a minute, and the screen went blank (screensaver
kicked in). After moving the mouse and getting the password prompt again,
the buttons DO work. When I was testing in Hardy, I noted in the
description that the non-functional dialog box did not have the Switch User
button, but right now in Jaunty that isn't the case. The buttons I have are
Leave Message, Switch User, Cancel, and Unlock.

[Bug 292912] Re: Screen flickers as though it has the wrong refresh rate for a few seconds

2009-01-29 Thread Omegamormegil
I believe I might have the same hardware in a Dell Inspiron 1300, but I
don't get this issue closing and opening the lid. I do get flicker
other times, such as when I'm switching back from a full screen game,
and I'm running fully updated Intrepid without any modification to Xorg.

I'm attaching my lspci -vvnn and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If someone can
confirm that I have the exact same issue as Collin, I'll try giving
upstream a hand.

Is there anything else you need that would help in fixing this bug?

If this doesn't get fixed perhaps it should be noted in the Jaunty

SDHC card with this hardware and the upgrade could be quite detrimental
to people doing so.

- Neither unetbootin nor usb-creator is capable of burning the img files
- on which the netbook remix is located. Maybe an iso? Either way, a user
- must use dd to get the img onto a USB, and I don't know how it could be
- done on windows.
+ Please add support for burning .img files to Unetbootin.

[Bug 373938] Re: a tinybuntu sub-distro is very missing

2009-05-08 Thread Omegamormegil
Thanks for taking the time to submit this bug to help make Ubuntu
better! This type of suggestion is more appropriate for posting to
Ubuntu Brainstorm: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ so I'm going to make
it as invalid on this bug tracker.

On Brainstorm you can get some good discussion going and people can vote
on your idea. Good luck!

[Bug 374533] [NEW] Netbook Launcher icons don't shrink after launching an application

2009-05-10 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netbook-launcher

Icons in the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface enlarge with orange
highlighted text on mouseover, and shrink down and unhighlight when the
mouse passes off of the icon. However, when you click an icon to launch
an application the icon does not correctly shrink or unhighlight
automatically as the UNR Launcher looses focus and you are switched to
the newly opened application, but remains enlarged and highlighted until
a future mouseover.

I have included a screenshot as an example. In the screenshot, the
first Calculator shortcut icon, System Monitor, and Terminal icons
remain enlarged and with highlighted names. I added a 2nd calculator
shortcut icon to clearly demonstrate the size difference.

This bug drives me crazy. Everything on the panel jumps around
periodically, sometimes after the screen resolution gets changed (such
as when playing full screen games) or after upgrades. I get really
tired of having to unlock everything, move it back, and re-lock it.
You'd think that locking it would keep it from moving, but, practically
speaking, it only prevents ME from putting it back after it moved
itself.

for the Intrepid beta release.

[Bug 239585] Re: Shortcut to take screenshot in conflict with YouTube search

2008-09-29 Thread Omegamormegil
Similarly, the numbers 0, 1, and 2 are now hotkeys for resizing the
aspect ratio, so there is no way to use the youtube plugin to search for
anything requiring these numbers, such as the year (2008), without
copying and pasting from another program.

I tried to use Totem to view the 2008 US Presidential Debates, and it
just kept resizing the window. Absurd, really. I think a lot of people
are going to notice this.

sudo killall pulseaudio lets me start wesnoth until I restart the
computer. It's a pulseaudio problem. Similarly, glob2 will not run
without killing pulseaudio first.

[Bug 276671] Re: simutrans doesn't work with pulseaudio

Thanks for the bug report. This bug appears to be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/274577, so I'm
marking it as such. You can try typing "sudo killall pulseaudio" in a
terminal, and then try starting simultrans - it just might work.

** Description changed:

I ran updates today (Sept. 25) on Ubuntu 8.10 at 5:00 PM EST. The last
time I did updates before that was yesterday about 6:00 PM EST.

I have Frozen Bubble set at full screen. I get the "Loading" for a few
seconds, then it goes to desktop & freezes the mouse. The screen
  changes to a lower resolution of 640 X 480. Escape doesn't work -- I
have to do to restart X.

Also, RhythmBox stopped working -- I get a sound error. ALSA & Pulse
audio don't work, but switching to OSS does work.

I've attached what Terminal says when I open Frozen Bubble in windowed
  mode.

[Bug 239585] Re: Various totem shortcuts in conflict with YouTube search

2008-10-06 Thread Omegamormegil
** Summary changed:

- Shortcut to take screenshot in conflict with YouTube search
+ Various totem shortcuts in conflict with YouTube search

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: totem

- Ubuntu version in use: Hardy with all updates installed as of June 12th 2008
+ Ubuntu version in use: Hardy with all updates installed as of June 12th 2008
and Intrepid beta
  Totem version in use: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2

  What I wanted to do:
- Using the search functino of the youtube plug-in, I wanted to search for a
video whose name included the capital letter "S".
+ Using the search function of the youtube plug-in, I wanted to search for a
video whose name included the capital letter S, or the numbers 0, 1, or 2.

  What I expected to happen:
I wanted to type in the search term and I expected the typed-in letters to
appear in the search field.

  What happened instead:
- Whenever I type in Shift+S, I am offered a screenshot. (Shift+S is the
shortcut to take a screenshot in totem).
+ Whenever I type in Shift+S, I am offered a screenshot. (Shift+S is the
shortcut to take a screenshot in totem). Pressing 0, 1, or 2 resize the window
and fail to input the numbers into the search box.

  Steps to reproduce:
  0. Start totem.
  1. Enable the youtube plugin (Edit -> Plug-Ins -> Mark YouTube-Browser)
  2. Press F9 to show the panel on the right edge of the window.
  3. Select "YouTube" from the drop down menu.
  4. Activate the search term field by left-clicking into it.
- 5. Type something, including Shift+S.
+ 5. Type something, including Shift+S, 0, 1, or 2.

- Workaround: The search does not appear to be case-sensitive, so we can
substitute the capital "S" with "s" for now.
- Proposed solution: Re-Assign a new shortcut to the screenshot function.
+ Workaround: The search does not appear to be case-sensitive, in the first
case, substituting the capital letters with lowercase works for letters.
Searching for 0, 1, or 2 requires copying and pasting from another program,
such as gedit.
+ Proposed solution: Make all shortcut key combinations require the use of the
alt key.

[Bug 147928] Re: too many annoying interruptions during distribution upgrade

2008-08-06 Thread Omegamormegil
I agree, but I think there should be a way to retain the config file you
initially said not to use.

My idea would have the upgrade utility automatically use the new
configuration files whenever a prompt would have been displayed, and
would make backups of the old config files, renaming them with the
previous ubuntu release codename (ie "configfile.gutsy" during an
upgrade from gutsy to hardy).

After the upgrade, the user could be presented with a GUI displaying
which files were automatically replaced, with a diff displayed, and with
a button allowing the user to revert each individual file to it's old
version. If the user would opt to keep the old version, the system
would instead make a backup of the package maintainer's version renamed
with the new release codename (configfile.hardy), so that you could
change your mind later.

This would prevent the updater from having to know in advance what
packages would ask questions, and would also keep the upgrade process
from halting to wait for the user to respond mid-upgrade.

[Bug 346806] [NEW] gnome-system-monitor does not always show all processes

2009-03-22 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

I have noticed many times that CPU usage will be at 100% on the gnome-
system-monitor Performance tab but the processes tab does not report a
process using a high percentage of the CPU, even with the View > All
Processes option set.

The top command does displays the process taking up the CPU.

I don't have specific steps to reproduce, but the un-shown process is
usually a background processes such as updatedb. I run the system
monitor panel applet and try to investigate when my system slows down
because something is using the processor, so I am bothered by this bug
often. I have noticed this behaviour in Hardy, Intrepid, and Jaunty.

[Bug 346806] Re: gnome-system-monitor does not always show all processes

2009-03-22 Thread Omegamormegil
Tristan's steps to reproduce seem to work great for me. This bug report
is about the highly active updatedb (I'm not sure the mystery process is
always updatedb, it was just my example) process not being shown in
System Monitor. You are right that it does show sudo, but sudo is not
assigned a high CPU %. Having only sudo listed in System Monitor while
updatedb is running is not helpful in determining what is using the
processor.

Top correctly displays updatedb at the top of the list while it is
running. I don't understand why you say Tristan's steps to reproduce
don't work because the parent process of the active process is shown.
Are you saying that System Monitor is not designed to display the child
process in this instance?

[Bug 353387] Re: [Dell Inc. Inspiron 910] suspend/resume failure

2009-04-02 Thread Omegamormegil
I can confirm that it has to do with the mounted SD card (tested with it
in the internal card slot). I did some quick testing, and I have no
problem suspending with a vfat formated SD card. When the mounted
memory card is formated with ext3, Ubuntu fails to suspend. I tested
this on two 2GB SD cards, one with vfat, and the other with ext3.

2009-04-02 Thread Omegamormegil
I've noticed that the suspend fails if there is a mounted SD card
formated to ext3 in the card slot. vfat cards seem to work OK.

If you have an ext3 formated SD card, perhaps the problem went away
because you took it out?

[Bug 340366] Re: should not present pidgin and leave pidgin tray icon visible

2009-04-05 Thread Omegamormegil
Also, defaulting to having no notification icon (which is the default at
the moment) also causes the unexpected behaviour of exiting pidgin when
clicking the X. I expected that the envelope icon on the indicator
applet which was present before I accidentally closed Pidgin meant the
program would "minimize to tray" when I closed the buddy list window.

[Bug 356024] [NEW] Closing Pidgin buddy list window exits Pidgin by default

2009-04-05 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Currently, per this bug comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/290552/comments/12
Pidgin is intended to function as such:

  FUSA changes status
Indicator applet shows if there is a new message, allows hide/unhide of
buddylist
Pidgin shows no icon in notification area

The indicator applet does take over the message notifications and
hiding/unhiding of the buddylist, but it does not cause Pidgin to
persist if the pidgin window is closed, as one would expect (I expect it
to minimize to tray when the X is clicked). Pidgin must currently
remain minimized if one intends to use the program. You can reactivate
the Pidgin notification icon in Preferences, but this causes redundancy
in the notification area. I find this to be a regression in
functionality, as I now must always keep Pidgin minimized, taking up
space in my window switcher (this is the same problem that exists when
using Evolution - it must be kept open and minimized in order to
function).

As I see it, this could be corrected two ways:
1. Pidgin assumes it is to terminate if it is set to not display an icon.
This makes sense, as otherwise you would be left with no way to interact with
Pidgin's interface. This could be changed so that Pidgin would keep running in
the background, with the intention of using separate applications such as the
Indicator Applet and the FUSA to interface with the program.
2. Change the default setting in Pidgin back to Always Show the Notification
icon, but give the Indicator Applet the ability to hide Pidgin's icon.

Adding the functionality of Option 1 to Pidgin doesn't make much sense
in the absence of tools such as the FUSA and the Indicator Applet, so it
probably doesn't make sense for Pidgin to give it's users the ability to
make the program's interface vanish. Option 2 seems like the best
solution to me, but may be harder to achieve. If the functionality of
Option 2 was added to Pidgin and the Indicator Applet, and there was no
Indicator Applet running, Pidgin would work correctly. If the Indicator
Applet was running, the IA would instruct Pidgin to delegate the
responsibility of providing access to the Pidgin interface to itself,
removing the redundant icon problem.

[Bug 355329] Re: Apps should display a system tray icon when the messaging menu is not available

2009-04-05 Thread Omegamormegil
I just filled a bug against Pidgin has some similar ideas. I had the
idea of giving the Indicator Applet the ability to instruct Pidgin to
hide it's icon when IA was present. Pidgin would delegate the
responsibility of providing access to the Pidgin interface to itself,
removing the redundant icon problem. Perhaps the same functionality
could be provided to Evolution removing the requirement to keep it open
all the time?

[Bug 359323] [NEW] SDHC Cards do not work in Dell Mini 9 internal card slot with Linux 2.6.28

2009-04-10 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

I noticed that my 8GB SDHC memory card is not recognized at all when it
is inserted into the internal card slot. Using an external USB SDHC
memory card reader reads the same card perfectly fine. I also tested a
4GB SDHC card by a different manufacturer, which also didn't work. My
2GB SD card works fine. I tested this bug against linux 2.6.28 vanilla
and 2.6.29 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/. The
2.6.28 vanilla kernel also did not work, but the 2.6.29 kernel did work.

The 8GB SDHC memory card is detected and usable using Linux 2.6.29, but
not Linux 2.6.28.
