[Bug 272826] Re: "Ubuntero" inappropriate for female contributors

2008-09-25 Thread Norbert
 Leigh Honeywell wrote:
"Ubuntero is neutral to an anglophone, but to an hispanophone it sounds very
male, so let's consider Ubuntista."

then

"the -ista ending is neutral in English: the person who makes fancy
coffee is a barista, regardless of gender. No-one says "baristo"

So -o is gender neutral in English... but is not ? and when it is, we
drag Spanish in the mix ?

Well if we are not going to stick to English, then take French: -ista generally
sound feminine, just as much as -ero sound generally masculine...
in French there is no such thing as a 'neutral' gender, so everything fall on
one side of the other. this cannot be avoided. (desk: m, table:f, tv:f,
monitor:m, car:f, boat:m, computer:m, linux distribution:f, keyboard:m,
mouse:f,printer:f, scanner:m... and even though these words are not in the
language, unbutero:m, unbutista:f)

My point is: make an argument using strictly English if you feel it is
that important, but don't arbitrarily bring other language in the mix to
import a sexual connotation that was not there to start with, because
once you open that pandora box, there are enough language and diversity
in the world to find every example and it's opposite.

PS: Allow me to add that I too, do not favor at all requesting people to
declare a sex. Sex is as irrelevant to a technical discussion as height,
weight, or cleft chin.

Pong!

Sorry Romano, I might be not really helpful at all, but did you try any of the
packages on this site, as mentioned earlier?
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/

I have installed the packages, what has been listed earlier, since then
I don't see any more problems, yet I didn't upgrade to Hardy yet, so I
cannot speak for Hardy.

Norbert

[Bug 400912] [NEW] Removing switcher applet from the panel looses configured number of rows of workspaces

2009-07-17 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

I normally have 6 workspaces arranged in 2 rows of 3 on my (Hardy)
laptop. After each reboot (or logout, I presume) the desktop starts up
with one row of 6 workspaces. I don't normally keep the workspace
switcher applet in the panel, so to configure it back to the way I want
it, I end up having to add the applet to the anel, reconfigure the
workspace preferences, and remove the applet. The window manager in use
is metacity. The problem seems to be with the fact that the only place
where the number of rows is stored is the gconf registry, under the
switcher applet branch. This ends up getting thrown away when I remove
the applet from the panel, even though the configuration information has
impact on a lot more than just the applet itself. I expect gnome to
remember, across session restarts, the number of rows, once it is
configured even after I kill the switcher applet to save space on the
panel.

[Bug 60518] Re: [network-admin] /etc/resolv.conf gets clobbered when the OK button is pressed

2008-02-29 Thread Norbert
I can confirm this as an existing problem. In my case, I used DNS Suffixes
because of special circumtances. When I use Gnome-Network, it updates the
/etc/resolv.conf file. Now, in my case I use DHCP and the DNS Suffixes. So,
when Gnome-Network reconnects, it updates /etc/resolv.conf automatically,
making my DNS Suffixes disappear. The problem lies in the fact, that
Gnome-Network works together with dhcp3, where the configuration is stored in
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf.
So the main problem is, that if I want to make the Gnome-Network remember my
DNS Suffix settings, I have to manually update /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf, and
add the following : "prepend domain-name "something.com hu.something.com
blog.something.com "; (the space is at the end neccessary, otherwise the DHCP
client will give the current DNS Suffix extracted from the DHCP server wrong)
The solution would be, that gnome-network would update /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
in case of DHCP, and not resolv.conf. This way changes can be stored for a
longer period, and would not go lost after each reconnection.

2008-01-17 Thread Norbert
Hello Bryce!

Thank you for your kind help, but the problem is, that I cannot give you
additional information. Thats all I have. When I performed the upgrade, I
was not able to switch to Console mode (Alt+Fx). No error message, nothing.
The monitor got into suspend mode. I had to downgrade to the earlier X
driver so I will be able to use the console mode again.
Can you please give me some hints how to include more information?

Regards:
Norbert

[Bug 182865] Cannot switch to console after installing "xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9.1"

2008-01-14 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

Hello there

The latest Ubuntu Gutsy xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9.1 won't work
well with my PC having a "VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation
82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)" graphical card. The X
works well, but after having the driver loaded, I am unable to switch to
console mode. I was going through every log, but I couldn't find any error
messages which could help me further.
I had to downgrade to 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu9 so I can use console again.

May I ask you to take a look on this one?

Norbert

Bryce!

Thank you for your efforts, I just installed on my T60, and it seems to work
right now. I am testing it with compiz and without compiz, no problems occured
yet. (While I can see others have the problem still)
As I heard, Intel just released some technical specifications recently. Is this
also beeing valid for graphical cards?

Actually none of the interfaces except loopback shows up in "select
interface" box after after selecting "detailed interface statistics" or
any other option. But if you select "lan station monitor" -> "all
interfaces" you can actually observe traffic on other interfaces (e.g.
wlan0, eth0). iptraf -d wlan0 also works.

[Bug 382281] Re: Ekiga echo test is not playing back the sound.

2009-12-13 Thread norbert
Ekiga echo test is not playing back the sound. No PC to PC connection with
sound is possible, also not possible to make a sensufl PC to telephone
connection because no sound is played.
System plays otherwise sound normally: system sounds, rhythmbox or any other
application give sound.
Cam is displayed in the echo test, microphone is not tested because sound does
not work. microphone and soundsystem are working under system check test for
audio.
In the attached file is the system configuration: Shortly: I am using Ubuntu
9.10 Karmic Koala, Ekiga version 3.2.5. System is regularly actualized. Out of
some other helpforum I have tried the advice to kill the pulseaudio process,
but this did not help as well.

[Bug 372014] Re: errors in dmesg

2010-02-08 Thread norbert
Sometimes the eclipse (3.5.1) crashes as soon as I create new empty file and
save it. Then I can see familiar line in dmesg:
[ 940.882640] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the
key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled;
returning -EIO

Even without using eclipse my dmesg log is also full of these.. It never
happened before (3-4 weeks ago everything was all right).

Du solltest das Problem definitiv als Ubuntu-Bug berichten (unter

das ja noch in Ubuntu 9.10 behoben bevor es veröffentlicht wird.

[Bug 231575] Re: ATAPI devices malfunctioning

2009-09-06 Thread Norbert
In Karmic (alpha 5) the workaround "hal-disable-polling --device
/dev/sr0" wont longer work!

I think the reason is devicekit (replaces hal).

Does any know how to diable the polling with devicekit?

I tried

devkit-disks --inhibit-polling /dev/sr0
and
devkit-disks --inhibit-all-polling /dev/sr0

without any success.

2021-02-26 Thread Norbert
Same happens on 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS and upcoming 21.04.
This is very likely server-side issue. But it is not flavor specific, so I
removed Ubuntu MATE from affected projects.

[Bug 1928604] Re: ubuntu-advantage-tools should not be auto-installed on supported Ubuntu releases

2021-05-16 Thread Norbert
In other words ubuntu-minimal should not depend on ubuntu-advantage-tools for
supported releases.
You can make this dependency time-based. For example in 2023-05 add this
dependency for 18.04 LTS. But currently it is not needed.

[Bug 1928604] [NEW] ubuntu-advantage-tools should not be auto-installed on supported Ubuntu releases

2021-05-16 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

I understand that Canonical thinks about financial profit. It is
business and it is good.

But please do not install ubuntu-advantage-tools to supported releases
like 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS and 21.04. It may confuse users. Users do not
expect ESM existence on supported systems.

[Bug 1929307] [NEW] It is hard to set Pluma as default application to open desktop-files

2021-05-22 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Copy some desktop-file to the home folder with

cp /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop ~

2. Open Caja in home folder
3. Make right mouse click on newly copied firefox.desktop file, ensure that you
have two options here - "Open With LibreOffice Writer" and "Open With Other
Application"
4. Click on "Open With Other Application", select Pluma in the opened window
5. Repeat step 3 to see Pluma in the list

Expected results:
* desktop-files are now open with Pluma

Actual results:
* Pluma is not shown, "Open With LibreOffice Writer" stays in place

Workaround:

1. Hit Properties, go to Open With tab and repeatedly click on Remove button,
then close this window.
2. Visit "Open With Other Application" and type `pluma` in "Use a custom
command" and click Add (if does not work - do this twice)
