[Bug 252628] [NEW] MCC changes bootup theme to mythbuntu even if "change theme is unselected"

2008-07-28 Thread MarcRandolph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

In early July, I used MCC on a freshly installed Edubuntu 8.04.1 system
to add a mythtv front-end. When clicking "Apply" to add the front-end
functionality, it says that it is going to install some theme stuff in
addition to the front-end itself, even though I had the "change theme"
unselected (which BTW, is confusingly on a different MCC tab). Turns
out that it didn't change the theme of the desktop itself, but DID
install and overwite the bootup theme to the black & white mythbuntu
theme.

MCC was installed from -fixes repo in early July.

@ kwilliam++ I actually meant that the mythweb symbolic links should have been
fixed (as I mention below).

Thomas, are you sure that the mythweb links aren't fixed? My
understanding is that it should have been fixed in 8.10 per Bug 248563.

If that really is fixed, and the video_covers has been moved, then this

This is often a problem related to the video mode and/or drivers. Do

P.S. Pasting multiple pages of the same error message isn't particuarly
useful for debugging. One or two examples, WITH the context around the
message, is infinitely preferrable.

[Bug 379500] Re: cronjob for mythtv-status send's me many mails after upgrade to jaunty

2009-05-22 Thread MarcRandolph
Googling your error message results in the following hit:
http://v2kblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/upgrading-mythbuntu-from-810-to-904.html

which suggests the following work-around. Could you back up the below
mentioned files and then try this solution?

This problem was caused by two cron jobs both trying to modify /etc/motd at the
same time (every 10 minutes)! The update-motd cron job moves /var/run/motd.new
out from underneath the mythtv-status job. You can see the two jobs in
/etc/cron.d:
# grep 10 /etc/cron.d/mythtv-status /etc/cron.d/update-motd

/etc/cron.d/mythtv-status:*/10 * * * * root [ -x /etc/init.d/mythtv-status ] &&
/etc/init.d/mythtv-status reload > /dev/null
/etc/cron.d/update-motd:*/10 * * * * root [ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ] &&
/usr/sbin/update-motd 2>/dev/null

I believe what should really be happening is myth-status should be run
by update-motd every 10 minutes instead of independently. Here is what I
did to make that happen:

# rm /etc/cron.d/mythtv-status
# cd /etc/update-motd.d/
# ln -s /usr/bin/mythtv-status 50-mythtv-status

[Bug 263025] Re: Aptitude remove gnupg wants to remove unrelated packages

So in reality, the wiki instructions are incomplete (or wrong, depending
on how you want to think of things). Following the "uninstall gnupg
before installing gnupg2" instructions would likely result in something
that the user wasn't really intending.

Thank you for the suggestion on the right way to do it.

[Bug 326768] Re: mysqld_safe thinks mysqld has crashed when it hasn't

2009-05-12 Thread MarcRandolph
I'm not sure if I'm late to the party or not here... but on the off
chance that it would be helpful, I threw together a program to print out
the source process ID for a SIGHUP signal. I have attached the source
to this bug. Very simple to use... in this case:

1. mv mysqld_safe mysqld_safe_real
2. gcc sig_src.c -o mysqld_safe
3. Launch programs/services that cause crash
4. Watch stderr output, wherever that happens to be going. This could be
modified to log to a file.

[Bug 302919] Re: Please add dm140 driver

2009-05-20 Thread MarcRandolph
I see that lcdproc 0.5.3 is being readied for release upstream. I assume it
supports this device?
It is rare that Mythbuntu (or Ubuntu in general) makes patches and releases
items between the normal 9.04 and 9.10 release though, so you may just have to
use a PPA or compile it yourself until then. I suppose a -backport could be
requested.

This all assumes that 0.5.3 really does support this device, however.

Related problem occuring in Hardy/8.04.1.

[Bug 250146] [NEW] PgUp and PgDown mismapped on MCE

2008-07-19 Thread MarcRandolph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-lirc-generator

I haven't been able to find that it has already been fixed, so if it
has, feel free to close this.

I have what I believe to be a pretty typical remote:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/MCE_Remote

(specifically a version 2 that reports from SMK Manufacturing, Inc.)

Anyway, ChanUp and ChanDown buttons generate an Up/Down key config
rather than PgUp/PgDown:

begin
remote = mceusb
prog = mythtv
button = ChanDown
config = Down
repeat = 0
delay = 0
end

when it should be:

begin
remote = mceusb
prog = mythtv
button = ChanDown
config = PgDown
repeat = 0
delay = 0
end

Same for ChanUp/PgUp.

[Bug 216432] Re: [8.04] Mythtv retunes when beginning recording on channel

2008-10-03 Thread MarcRandolph
Howdy! Thanks for your report. I've noticed this behavior and thought
it was strange at first as well, but then decided that retuning is the
safe thing to do for a number of cases - especially when an external
set-top-box is involved. There is no way for Myth to know that a STB
has been power cycled, or the baby sitter changed the channel on it.

So for sure, the retune shouldn't be eliminated, but perhaps an option
could be added to prevent it for users that desire - making this a
feature request rather than a formal bug. Unfortunately, upstream won't
accept feature requests without a patch to implement said feature
request.

A few of my keys don't produce this output though, even though deeper
debugging seems to show that the kernel is detecting them properly -
still working on those.

Anyway, if you don't get much output, you might try 8.10 alpha or beta
before putting much more time into it. More remotes are supported in
the new kernel, and the code has changed considerably from 8.04 (so you
won't get much support on that). If it still doesn't work in 8.10, you
can help the kernel guys by recompiling the Ubuntu 8.10 kernel with
debug enabled and collect data on the key presses.

2008-05-24 Thread MarcRandolph
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 197153 ***

I am running a system that was upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy and updated
a week ago (mid-May 2008) and am seeing this too. Wasn't a problem with
Gutsy. I agree with the posters in this thread and that thread - this
doesn't seems like a duplicate - can we get this unmarked and reopened,
or should I open a new bug?

I'm seeing the error mentioned in the headline when I vnc into my server

[Bug 254477] [NEW] update-manager usability: Remove "Update is complete" wording

2008-08-03 Thread MarcRandolph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Running 8.04.1:
If an update fails (for example, due to Bug #105113), after update-manager is
done running, the window it pops up has less than ideal wording: In large print
it says "Upgrade is complete", but then the small print says "not all changes
and updates succeeded. For further details...expand the panel below".

The problem is that it it could lead to user confusion. Saying that
something is "complete" often carries with it the implication that
there were no problems. It would be much clearer if the large "Upgrade
is complete" text was removed altogether and the "not all changes and
updates succeeded" text became the main message for the user.

[Bug 254480] [NEW] Update-manager marks upgrades as completed even if they aren't

2008-08-03 Thread MarcRandolph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

After running out of disk space on /boot in the middle of an upgrade
(due to Bug #105113), I noticed that update-manager marks all packages
as upgraded, even if some failed.

The problem is that even *IF* the user studies the log output and fixes
the problem (in my case, finds the "No space left on device" message
that is hidden in the detail logs), update-manager provides them no way
to reattempt the upgrade; when they go into update-manager later, the
failing package(s) are no longer listed as needing to be installed.

Not only does this mean they have to open a shell and do it manually
after fixing the problem (in this case, clearing some disk space), but
could allow the user to forget to "finish" the upgrade, or worse, misled
the user into thinking the upgrade actually did complete because it is
not listed in the upgrade-manager queue.

This is easy to reproduce: make sure the /boot partition doesn't quite
have enough space for a new kernel, and then attempt to upgrade the
kernel. When it fails, simply delete files so that it has enough
space, and then use aptitude or apt-get to install.

Running 8.04.1, and
$ apt-cache policy update-manager
update-manager:
  Installed: 1:0.87.27

  Version table:

user when upgrades fail.

[Bug 288816] Re: Very unreliable DVD playback

2009-04-06 Thread MarcRandolph
The team understands how big an impact this is on some users and
installs, but to provide some background and hopefully head off a bunch
of "me-too" responses, upstream already investigated this issue and
unfortunately was not able to discover the source of the problem. It
appears to have been fixed on the trunk by a ffmpeg resync, which is
quite massive (http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/18904 lists SOME,
but not all, of the files impacted) and would be too disruptive to apply
to the -fixes branch.

In summary, unless else someone volunteers to dig deeper into the bug
and creates a patch, there aren't any resources to find and fix this on
the -fixes branch. If someone could find a stand-alone player that
works, a possible work-around might be to configure and use an external
player
(http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythVideo#External_Player_Configuration).
If the player(s) installed by default don't work and you're a bit more
adventuresome, you might try manually updating to the latest version of
your favorite player(s).

Thank you for keeping any further replies to this bug to a technical
nature (either code/patch discussions, or external player configurations
that work)!

Adding mythbuntu. It seems to me that the " & wait" should make things
more reliable and predictable rather than less, so I must be missing
something. Any danger in removing the " & wait"?

[Bug 370146] Re: mythfilldatabase crashed with SIGSEGV in MythContext::ClearSettingsCache()

2009-07-07 Thread MarcRandolph
Unfortunately, upstream can't determine a source with the current
backtraces. There is a remote chance that the second trace is
filesystem related, so please try a fsck (and might as well throw a
database clean in there) and if you can still reproduce then install the
qt-debugging symbols before submitting a new backtrace.

Thank you for your report. I am marking this as a duplicate of an
existing report. This issue appears to be not related to MythTV or
mythbuntu at all, but rather a problem with ACPI wakeup.

[Bug 402630] Re: IguanaIR not in Mythbuntu remote/transmitter selection dropdown boxes

2009-07-21 Thread MarcRandolph
Hello, and thank you for helping to make Mythbuntu better. This issue
is blocked by Bug #153457 (lirc needs to support it) - although
hopefully that is being resolved in 9.10 / Karmic with the recent lirc
0.8.5 release (I'm assuming 0.8.5 supports the device).

[Bug 200761] Re: mythbackend uses 100% cpu and leaks in memory when upnp is enabled.

2009-08-22 Thread MarcRandolph
This has been fixed upstream on trunk and will therefore be included in
the upcoming 0.22 release (as well as Karmic / 9.10).

We have builds of mythtv 0.22 available on a PPA to test. Please follow
the directions at http://mythbuntu.org/auto-builds to enable them.

WARNING: If you intend to go back to 0.21, you will need to back up
your database before upgrading.
