Some Totem and Gstreamer files WERE released today because every
single day I run aptitude update and safe-upgrade and today, Nov/11, a
new set of files were available and downloaded and installed. That's
what I'm talking about. Of course these were not the files I expected
to address the subject although you said a week ago that probably at
this time a new package would be released.

No need to hurry, this bug is just an inconvenience that can easily be
circumvented. However (and this is OT, sorry) I noticed in my system
(Jaunty & Karmic 64) that Totem is disturbed while playing downloaded
DVD files. Although the first half plays perfectly, the second messes
with the timer, and back and forth commands. Tested VLC with the same
files and it seems to work. Anyone could tell me if this is a bug (I
didn't find) or it's just my system? Thanks.

[Bug 556225] Re: New Lucid install will not detect a second Sata HD

2010-04-06 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Any clue how to finish the process? Couldn't get this info:

"Almost finished ...

To finish authorizing the application identified as apport-collect to
access Launchpad on your behalf you should go back to the application
window in which you started the process and inform it that you have done
your part of the process."

Tried the above described process three times, either you will receive
three identical reports or something is very wrong, nothing new appears
in this bug log.

Reset the disks to present them as /sda (boot) and /sbd (data). Lucid
fresh install (zsync updated 24 hours ago) still cannot see my system
disk. It keeps offering the same disk as yesterday (now effectively
secondary) although the main disk is correctly assigned as /sda.

from my fstab, (same as Karmic): /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660
user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Two devices connected to the IDE port:

dvd r/w: /dev/sr1
legacy zipdrive: /media/ntfs-1 (not listed in fstab)

When media is inserted at zipdrive no auto mounting occurs although
media can be seen at Places/Computer and root mounted from there.

from syslog:

When a written CD is inserted, its icon becomes available at "Places".
Different from Karmic, the icon has to be clicked to mount it.

When a blank CD is inserted, the same happens, the icon becomes
available but as empty CD, it cannot be mounted, although (it seems) it
can be accessed by a CD burning application.

If I try to mount a blank CD the following error is displayed:

Unable to mount cdrom0

mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

All updates but nothing at all on the Lucid desktop, no CD, no Zip,
that's the problem.

Of course it can be worked out, but I'm beginning to miss Karmic :-).

[Bug 556225] [NEW] New Lucid install will not detect a second Sata HD

2010-04-05 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Testing Lucid Beta Live CD AMD64 (Apr, 5 2010) as a fresh install on a
system with Karmic and Jaunty and Grub2 already installed on /dev/sdb
(originally /sda but after some disk fiddling remained at /sdb). /sda is
a new disk. Both Nautilus and GParted on the Live CD recognize both
disks and are able to mount existing partitions. Install 10.04 cannot
detect previous Ubuntu versions or /sdb. Only offers repartitioning of
/sda (and a Legacy useless 100 meg ATA Zip Drive) which is not what I
want to do. I guess this leaves me with the Alternate CD. If I remember
correctly this is not a new issue, I might have observed it in the past.

[Bug 461470] Re: HDD(s) incorrectly detected

2009-10-28 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Same thing here.
 - Running Jaunty and Karmic Beta both 64 completely OK.
 - Burned CD - K. RC, tested - OK
 - Gparted (from the Live CD) can "see" sda and all the partitions (Seagate
Sata).
Deleted Karmic Beta root partition (sda1 ext4) to install
Karmic RC AMD64 updated on Oct/28.
  Created an empty ext4 sda1
 - Tried to install.
 - Instalation script (parted) can't "see" sda
 - Deleted sda1 with Gparted
 - Install still can't "see" sda
 - Put a ZIP drive at sdb (Pata)
 - Install (Parted) recognizes the Pata drive. (useless it is a 100 Meg ZIP)
but not the Sata
 - Rebooted with PCI=NOMSI (A long time ago it worked) to no avail.

Only install script cannot recognize Sata sda - GParted on the same CD works
perfectly.
... and Karmic is being released right... NOW!

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Package gnome-panel 4011

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

Updated till October 11 - 03:40 GMT from main server

For some reason "lost" Firefox standard icon. Right clicked application

opened but no icon archive could be found. On the "Browse" screen right
clicked to check "Show Hidden Files" but still no file could be seen,
either on or off. Browsed several directories, all "empty". Nautilus
showed all icon files at their expected places. Only they remained
invisible for gnome-panel.

I don't think so, the bug (at least on my machine - Gnome-64) is
clear, no files can be seen while clicking properties/icon exactly as
Trevor Skaife reported some hours ago and as shown at both
screenshots.

The referred (old) bug is:

"When you try to set up a custom icon for an application with
alacarte, it's not possible to use a picture that is not in the
default folder, it's possible to browse the different folders of the
system through the file picker but the pictures/files won't be
displayed."

I am not trying to set up a custom icon, I just tried the sequence
"Properties/Icon/Browse Icons" and no file can be seen. Not at the
default directory, not at anywhere else. Please, observe at my
screenshot that Nautilus show them all. Perhaps the "Show Hidden
Files" option at "Browser" is locked to "no".

The lost icon problem began while setting icons options (panel) for
Firefox and Shiretoko at 9.04 install (/home is shared). Later, on
9.10, observed that the link was broken because (of course) the
Shiretoko icon was not available. Trying to reset the icon to default
showed the problem, no file can be seen on any directory under
"Properties/Icon/Browse Icons" or "Properties/Icon/Browse
Icons/Browse". Returned to 9.04, went through the same sequence,
choose an icon also available at 9.10 and my FF Icon returned at
Katmic, but still cannot do it the same on 9.10, either on panel or
System/Preferences/Main Menu/Internet/Firefox/Properties, etc...

Of course this bug is not limited to Firefox, I do not have access to
any icon through this sequence.

[Bug 392836] Re: grub not adding correct uuid to grub.cfg

2009-10-02 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Problems here with double boot configuration.
Running Jaunty perfectly (/root at secondary hd0,8). Installed Karmic Beta
(sept/29) at primary partition (hd0,0). Could not boot after install. Still
unable to find out why, (perhaps it did not like my grub[1] at [hd0,8]?). Reset
Grub to previous conditions and Jaunty booted OK. Installed Grub2 in Jaunty,
just in case. Menu.lst was set to default (Karmic) parameters (hd0,0) and
corresponding (wrong) UUID. Of course the system didn't boot. Restored original
menu.lst parameters from (good grace, there was a) backup and managed to make
Jaunty work again. No way I can further test Karmic with double boot. I'm
currently trying to reinstall original Grub.

Checked files and indeed there was an utf-8 invalid filename. No issues
here, bug

[Bug 757727] Re: Zeitgeist-daemon memory usage skyrockets after dash search

2012-04-02 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Running Oneiric 64 - K 3.0.0-17- Unity - zeitgeist 0.8.2-1 - Ubuntu One
sync with about 2.2 GB (not often changed) on an AMD Phenom X4 and 4 GB
memory. Zeitgeist-daemon easily skyrockets ocupying up to 2 GB (last
time I checked). Right at this moment System is on for the last two
hours, mostly in standby mode, pratically no processing, and it is
already using 400 MB. It didn't seem to happen a couple of weeks ago.
I'm can't figure what might have changed.

[Bug 92652] Re: Please add Microsoft compatible keyboard layout for Brazil

2010-10-02 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Update to Volanin's recipe at #18

How to fix this in Maverick in 2 steps:

*** 1. Edit the file: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/gtk.immodules ***

2. Add your LOCALE to the end of the line beginning with "cedilla".
If you use Ubuntu in English, your locale is probably: en or en_US.
Add any LOCALE that you usually use as well.

Original line:
"cedilla" "Cedilla" "gtk20" "/usr/share/locale" "az:ca:co:fr:gv:oc:pt:sq:tr:wa"

Modified line:
"cedilla" "Cedilla" "gtk20" "/usr/share/locale"
"az:ca:co:fr:gv:oc:pt:sq:tr:wa:en:en_US"

The effect is immediate.
You just need to restart your applications.

[Bug 697095] Re: polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 crashed with SIGSEGV in g_datalist_id_set_data_full() during login

2011-04-03 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Crash occured when trying enter Software Sources just after the first
boot with Ubuntu Desktop. Same thing with Ubuntu Unity after applying
the NVidia driver. Observed this crash with Natty 64 installed w/ the
alternate installer over an existing (Maverick copy) home directory.
However, a couple of days ago successfully installed the first Beta
version Natty 64 from the CD Live Installer over a blank /home and no
crash was observed on several reboots.

It seems indeed a bug. Locales was not correctly set at install (alternate).
(language English - Local Brazil) since this combination is not standard.
Although "Software Source" was correctly set to "Brazil server" the lack of a
pertinent "locales" setting caused the crash.

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available (convert cups to upstart)

2011-09-03 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Clint,

In the new bug report, please consider that contrary to the stated at #30
(Martin Pitt) :
"For lucid, ... samba reloads the printers every 750 seconds anyway, so it's
just a matter of waiting..."
At least for some hardware configurations it doesn't happen for Maverick, Natty
and Oneiric (as seen by the previous posts)

Also, please repost the working solution at #18 so that until a
permanent solution is released, faulty systems can be easily patched.

Many thanks for addressing this issue again.

[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-05-02 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
David,

Tried your modified nvidia.conf from bug 771739. Restarted the system
and noticed options (internal mic, front mic, rear mic) previously
available at Maverick are back. Tested Sound Recorder with each one,
switching options on Sound Preferences and opening Sound Recorder at
each time. Noticed, as expected, that internal or front mic don't work
since it is a desktop and the mic connector is at the back. If set to
rear mic some sound can be heard. Moved the input and output volume
controls up and down and couldn't find a way to obtain a decent capture,
just a lot of white noise and a distant whisper. Noticed however that
increasing the output volume leads easily to saturation, in a way much
different of the 10.10 behavior. Even the default output sound at
startup sounds "cracked", It seems that I'm not facing bug 771739 only.
My tests with alsamixer showed similar results.

Are these codecs much different? Is there a way to load Maverick's alsa
driver into Natty? Although the volume levels at Maverick are modest (no
amplified speakers), alsa works perfectly on this very hardware.

Maverick: snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi NVIDIA HDMI HD-audio codec
Natty: snd_hda_codec_hdmi HDMI HD-audio codec

[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-05-02 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Updated to proposed kernel today (2.6.38-9)and tested the sound system
again. To use the right terminology, options at Input connector are:
Rear Microphone, Analog Line-in, Front Microphone. Front and Line-In are
mute, no device connected. Since I could see changes on the input level
with Sound Recorder, depending on the volume level, decided to reinstall
Skype and let it control the Mic level. There's actual recording but the
level of the voice signal is much lower than the white noise. Observed
that if Mic is on, the output volume cannot be set above 80% without
output distortion. Playback from a sound file is normal.

Octavio,

This bug has just been reported for Natty (2011-04-27). I'll stick to
Maverick 64 until this issue is resolved.

2011-04-29 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Octavio, check the sound quality you get, microphone volume at 100%
should cause some distortion. Anyway, I fiddled with alsamixer
(terminal) but could not find anything wrong. Gracias for the
intervention, I was starting to feel a little lonely over here, but
sure, the developers must be having a lot of work with the new release.

[Bug 773697] Re: gcalctool 5.32.0 - wrong decimal separator - comma insted of dot

2011-04-30 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Marcel, thanks for your attention.

It would be correct if it showed any symbol for decimal separator when
any of the (dot) keys were pressed (as it used to be). But now it only
happens on Natty, as explained (and it shows a comma, which is strange
but correct, given the Locale settings). On Maverick the (dot) keys are
disabled. It should not happen on an US International keyboard. It
doesn't happen with LibreOffice, or Terminal, this very window
(..) or any other application.

Below my Locale settings:

Acknoledged, Marcel, it is in fact the same bug. Funny why it didn't
originally appear in my Mav install on October 2011. Pity that it can't
be corrected because of nasty Natty, itself far from stable.

[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-05-08 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Problem solved. What happened? I don't know.

Puzzled with the fact that I was the only guy in Ubuntu Natty planet
with a crashed sound, decided to give another try.

This time, instead of zsync-inc my .iso sources from
cdimage.ubuntu.com , zsync-ed from the actual Natty release in nearest
mirror (it shouldn't make any difference since I started seriously
testing Natty Beta just after the final release on April 28 - but, in
fact, there was a slight difference, less than .5%). Then burned a USB
stick from within the current and buggy Natty test install, instead of
using the Maverick application .

Booted from the USB stick in "test Ubuntu" mode, completely updated the
stick from the standard source, checked the microphone and of course it
didn't work.

Opened alsamixer in a terminal screen, because of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/771739 -
and enabled the rear mic - standard in my system.

Tested the Sound Recorder again and "voilà" it works! This time without
the serious distortions observed before.

Installed Natty on HD again, (third or fourth time) now from this
special stick, tested sound and it works, updated (almost 200 Mb in
file updates up to now) and it works, installed Skype and it still
works, enabled NVidia last video driver, rebooted and Unity is there,
and I still don't like it but at least the sound works.

What really happened? I really don't know, but somehow it is was
"magically" solved. I guess David Henningsson will be
happy to know or perhaps a bit intrigued, like me.

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available (convert cups to upstart)

2011-04-07 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Re #48

Clint, every time I have to restart Maverick 64 (hopefully seldon) I
subsequently run "sudo service smbd restart" (too lazy and ignorant to
put it on a script) because printers will not load in Samba. Can't
remember if I had too do it on Lucid. Will try to leave the system alone
for a few hours and see what happens but the last time I did it, I could
not observe what Martin stated at #30 (samba reloads the printers every
750 seconds) by the way (can' help but notice), already commented at #32
on Oct, 2010. Could it be something with my config? This is a Mav. 64
clean install, no leftovers from Lucid (besides /home).

2011-04-07 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
System is on now for one hour (3600 secs) after a restart and no signal
of a "Samba reload" as stated at #30. smbclient -L [..] correctly shows
all shares but the printers. Either the same bug exists in Maverick 64
or a similar bug affects at least my system. Anything I could do besides
"sudo service smbd start"?

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available (convert cups to upstart)

2011-04-07 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Although the default smb.conf parameter "printing" equals to "cups"
(printing = cups) unless the parameter "printcap name" is set (printcap
name = cups) the printers do not load in the periodical "samba reload"
process referred at #30, thus requiring a manual "sudo service smbd
restart".

Since I try to keep my smb.conf as lean as possible, trying to keep the
defaults, I didn't notice this up to some minutes ago when checked the
smb.conf file at #42. My fault, sorry, feel really ashamed, but if one
day someone arrives here looking for a solution for this bug while
riding a Maverick or Natty my mistake can be useful.

So Martin Pitt was right, in Maverick and (by the way) Natty, although
CUPS isn't available at samba startup, and this is a nuisance, it is
automatically reloaded according to the "printcap cache time" parameter
which defaults to 750, (too much for me, reduced to 300 or five minutes
"printcap cache time = 300") providing you set "printcap name = cups"
which, at the original smb.conf, looks like default but isn't...

Re: #52
It seems I was wrong again. It looks like the printers were loaded when I saved

my Maverick AMD64, will not periodically reload the printers and I still don't
know why.
