[Bug 1905825] [NEW] [SRU] Disable CRTCs when system becomes headless

2020-11-26 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
On new Intel SoCs, after all connectors are unplugged and the system becomes
headless, it cannot detect monitor hotplug event from type-c port.

[Fix]
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1561

Based on "drm/i915 Intel GFX Driver, Hotplug" [1]:
"Finally, the userspace is responsible for triggering a modeset upon receiving
the hotplug uevent, disabling or enabling the crtc as needed."

[Test]
Unplug type-c monitor from an Intel Tiger Lake desktop. Replug the monitor
back, monitor is blank.
With the fix applied, the system can detect monitor again.

[Where problems could occur]
This fix disables CRTCs when there's no monitor, if driver has trouble dealing
with it, we may see something break.

[Bug 1906168] [NEW] Prevent thermal shutdown during boot process

2020-11-29 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Surprising thermal shutdown at boot on Intel based mobile workstations.

[Fix]
Since these thermal devcies are not in ACPI ThermalZone, OS shouldn't
shutdown the system.

These critial temperatures are for usespace to handle, so let kernel
know it shouldn't handle it.

SRU for stable kernels will be sent after the fix is in upstream.

[Test]
Use reboot stress as a reproducer. 5% chance to see a surprising
shutdown at boot.

With the fix applied, the thermal shutdown is no longer reproducible.

[Where problems could occur]
For ACPI based platforms, we still have "acpitz" to protect systems from
overheating. If these acpitz sensors don't work, then the system could
face real overheating issue.

[Bug 1906229] [NEW] Refresh ACPI wakeup power to make Thunderbolt hotplug detection work

2020-11-30 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Dell Precision 5550 cannot detect Thunderbolt device hotplug.

[Fix]
Refresh ACPI wakeup power if it's already enabled to make GPE work.

[Test]
Make sure the root port of TBT hierachy is in D3cold.
Plug a Thunderbolt Dock or Thunderbolt Disk, the system cannot detect
anything.

With the patch applied, OS can always detect hotplugged Thunderbolt
devices.

[Where problems could occur]
Though we refresh the wakeup device power, we didn't disable/enable ACPI
GPEs, so we won't miss any GPE event from this fix.

[Bug 1928838] [NEW] Fix kernel panic on Intel Bluetooth

2021-05-18 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Kernel panic when doing rfkill block on Intel Bluetooth controller.

[Fix]
Ensure everything is stopped before calling the shutdown callback.

[Test]
Keep pressing the airplane mode button. High chance that a kernel splat
is shown and Bluetooth becomes unusable.

[Where problems could occur]
The shutdown callback is used by other Bluetooth controller as well.
Logically, the patch is doing the correct thing by queiscing the device
before calling shutodwn. However, other Bluetooth drivers may depend
it to behave correctly.

[Bug 1929048] [NEW] Speed up resume time on HP laptops

2021-05-20 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Some HP laptops can take very long time to resume from sleep.

[Fix]
Avoid evaluating _INI on resume. It's only needed to run once at boot.

[Test]
Suspend and resume the system.
With the patch applied, the system resumes in a blink.

[Where problems could occur]
Maybe there are some platforms require the old behavior, so hp-accel can
break after system resume.

[Bug 1929217] [NEW] Select correct boot VGA when BIOS doesn't do it properly

2021-05-21 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
On HP EliteDesk 805 G7 desktop, when a add-in discrete GFX card is
present but the display is connected to integrated GPU, BIOS cannot find
the correct boot VGA. Hence, wrong OpenGL/Vulkan library is used, makes
the desktop environment very laggy.

[Fix]
The current heuristic picks the fallback VGA device with lowest PCI
device number. Based on the current heuristic, also check for ACPI video
device which should be the integrated VGA device.

[Test]
Check if the integrated GPU is the boot VGA:
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/\:08\:00.0/boot_vga
0

After applying the patch:
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/\:08\:00.0/boot_vga
1

[Where problems could occur]
When there are multiple GPUs that are ACPI video devices, and BIOS
failed to find a VGA to POST, the new heuristic introduces new behavior.

Since multiple ACPI video devices are on laptops, the EFI base should
already be correct otherwise there's no POST. If that really happens the
laptop is completely broken at first place.
