[Bug 201762] Re: [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone
I'm writing to support the original complaint and Alex's post at the top of this ticket. Please! It's really important to be able to dim the screen automatically when switching to battery power, in order to save battery life. I relied on this in Gutsy. I go back and forth between AC and battery several times a day, and I obviously don't want to have to fiddle with the brightness keys or applet every time I hit the power cord. (There may be several settings that can extend battery life -- screen brightness, CPU speed, hard disk spindown period, etc. I am surprised that gnome-power-manager doesn't allow all of these to be set differentially for AC and battery. Windows has allowed this for years, at least on Thinkpads.) Chris, you write: "Personally I do not care if I am on AC or battery, I will adjust the brightness to the level I want and expect it to stay there." But I don't think users like you will be significantly inconvenienced by Alex's suggestion (whereas it would greatly help users like me). Here's why: - Do you mean that you want to be permanently at 70%? And when you first set up the laptop on AC and set the brightness to 70%, it might change when you unplug it? That's not so horrible. You'll be slightly annoyed that you have to correct the brightness a second time now that you're on battery. But then you will live happily ever after, since you will have identical preferences set for AC and battery. Having to adjust the brightness twice seems a small price to pay for giving the rest of us the flexibility to have two different settings. (see https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/backlight- brightness-simplicity) - Or do you mean that you adjust your brightness to local lighting conditions every time you move the machine? In that case, I don't see why you would expect your adjustment to "stay there" when you plug or unplug the machine. Plugging or unplugging probably means you're moving to a new location, so why would you care if your previous adjustment sticks? You're about to readjust anyway. Chris, you also write that Alex's use case is confusing. That's because Alex was outlining an interesting reversed situation where one might want a *brighter* screen on battery power. That is the reverse of the much more common situation where one wants to *dim* the screen on battery power to save battery. Think about this common situation. -- [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 61211] Re: "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings." is a really unhelpful error message
Let me add another reason that it is an unhelpful error message: *** What is meant by "in the Multimedia settings"? *** I am running LInux Mint 4.0 (basically Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon with extra codecs), and my Gnome menu doesn't list any program called "Multimedia." So what am I supposed to fiddle with? We do have Administration / Services / Audio settings management (alsa-utils), and Preferences / Sound, and a whole Sound and Video submenu ... or I could open gnome- volume-control, which allows me to tweak Alsa mixer settings, from the right-click menu of the volume control icon on the panel ... At a minimum, could someone fix the error message to tell us which of these to fiddle with? The particular details of my situation are perhaps off-topic for a bug about an error message, but just to flesh out the picture: This bug comes and goes for me, without my attaching any other hardware. Sound Recorder can be working fine, but then crashes with this message when I try to open a new file in it. (Yes, software sound mixing is turned on.) Usually restarting Sound Recorder works okay; but today I am getting the error message immediately whenever I start Sound Recorder. Here's the bug trace today (thanks, Alvaro): $ gnome-sound-recorder --gst-debug-level=2 0:00:00.202968000 21830 0x805e408 WARN alsa pcm_hw.c:1242:snd_pcm_hw_open: alsalib error: open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c failed: Invalid argument 0:00:00.203016000 21830 0x805e408 WARN alsa pcm_dsnoop.c:606:snd_pcm_dsnoop_open: alsalib error: unable to open slave 0:00:00.203065000 21830 0x805e408 WARN alsa gstalsasrc.c:600:gst_alsasrc_open: error: Recording open error on device 'default': Invalid argument This seems perhaps consistent with ^rooker's diagnosis above. I wrote: > Usually restarting Sound Recorder works okay; but today I am getting the > error > message immediately whenever I start Sound Recorder. Well, that turns out to be because I already had another copy of Sound Recorder running (oops). So a more helpful error message in this case would be "You have another copy of Sound Recorder running." :-) (Or better, yet, just tell the existing copy to open a new window, and return immediately -- many applications behave this way now.) -- "Your audio capture settings are invalid. [Bug 1514093] [NEW] dia.desktop does not list all supported MIME types
Public bug reported: Dia is able to read and save SVG files. However, the GNOME desktop file /usr/share/applications/dia.desktop does not advertise this fact. It lists only MimeType=application/x-dia-diagram; (This has consequences e.g. for the MyPaint application, which allows use of an external program to edit vector graphics. [Bug 1540195] [NEW] extra toolbar buttons don't show in Fullscreen mode

[Bug 1540195] Re: extra toolbar buttons don't show in Fullscreen mode
Ok, sorry. From http://mate-desktop.com/, it seems that atril is a fork of evince. I had thought it was merely a rename to avoid MATE/GNOME conflicts. So I understand better: are you saying that evince doesn't have this bug? [Bug 1315835] Re: gedit overwrite dconf config with root permission
I am having the same problem on a different system. I am using Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca", MATE Edition (a derivative of Ubuntu 14.04). In MATE (a Gnome 2 fork), gedit has been renamed to pluma. Specifically, just starting up sudo pluma makes the ownership of ~/.config/dconf/user immediately change from myusername.myusername to root.root. This is a horrible bug! When I reboot much later, my user preferences all appear to be toast. No panel, no background, no keyboard remapping ... And it's hardly obvious why or how to fix it. It's very hard to track down that it boils down to permissions on a mysterious, hidden file that I never even touched! Is this the right place to report the bug? [Bug 1322750] Re: Gnome-shell hang on wake from suspend
I have had related behavior for a long time -- at least the 3 few editions of Linux Mint. I am using MATE (the fork of Gnome 2). Here is the problem, which is reproducible: Sometimes I use a dual monitor setup. I've learned not to suspend (usually by closing the laptop lid) while the second monitor is active. Because then I am hosed: when I try to resume, the machine is frozen and needs to be rebooted. (I can't even do Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a terminal login prompt. I think I do have mouse movement, like the original poster, but would have to check.) [Bug 817531] Re: Live365 stream buffering at 0% all the time
Confirming this problem, for Live365 stations only (i.e., the liveradio extension to Banshee). I'm using Banshee 2.4.0, with the liveradio plugin configured to use my Live365 username/password. [Bug 694910] Re: Regression: patch to bug 539477 breaks Super+P keybindings
Suggested interface: If the user has bound p to anything in compiz, then this requested behavior should override the screen- switching behavior. However, when the user makes such a binding, an "Are you sure?" dialog box should pop up, warning that this may break the screen-switching key on some laptops. This resembles the way compiz handles key binding conflicts between different plugins.
