[Bug 253736] [NEW] please add support for (checking) certificates

2008-07-31 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sobby

{s,g}obby currently supports encrypted connections which is great, but
they don't appear to support any form of authentication of the server,
e.g. by validating a certificate. Would you please consider adding
support for authentication? Thanks.

[Bug 296262] [NEW] heisenberg bogus hardware in lshw output

2008-11-10 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lshw

Every so often, lshw running on a DL 385G1 (i.e. an Opteron box) will
suddenly grow a /0/2 which claims to be some sort of 'generic' device
with a bus info of 'parisc', i.e.:

 *-generic UNCLAIMED
  physical id: 2
  bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What's bizarre is that this entry stays around for a time and then
disappears again. I'm entirely confident that the box doesn't have
any PARISC parts to it, and fairly confident that the hardware isn't
actually changing between runs. It does appear limited to this box
though, we don't see this phantom 'generic' entry appear on any of our
other DL 385G1 boxes.

[Bug 227711] Re: hunspell-en-us conflicts with thunderbird (unversioned)

2008-11-12 Thread James Troup
This also affects hunspell-ne in hardy. Which is particularly
problematic since, e.g. Dell XPSes with Ubuntu pre-installed have that
package installed by default and the message you get from 'Add/Remove
programs' when you try to install Thunderbird is particularly
confusing. Any chance of an SRU for this?

[Bug 376448] [NEW] please add a --no-action or similar option

2009-05-14 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rdiff-backup

Please consider adding support for a --no-action or similar option to
rdiff-backup.

Whenever I have to use rdiff-backups in anger, I'm always concerned
about making things worse by using the wrong options to restore; a --no-
action option would make me feel a lot more comfortable that the command
I'm about to run is going to do the right thing and not make things
worse.

[Bug 376454] [NEW] rdiff-backup well restore a file over the top of a directory without warning

2009-05-14 Thread James Troup

I ran the following command:

  rdiff-backup -v5 -r 1D backups/foo/bar /tmp/

happened was my entire /tmp directory was deleted and replaced with a

[Bug 286977] [NEW] ipmi_devintf needs a MODALIAS of platform:ipmi_si

2008-10-21 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use the HP Proliant health monitoring software which is
based on IPMI in modern HP hardware. Ubuntu detects the iLO/IPMI
hardware in the server and correctly loads the ipmi_si module, but
unfortunately, the daemon won't start without also manually modprobing
ipmi_devintf.

| $ sudo /etc/init.d/hpasmd start
| * Starting HP Proliant Health Monitor...
| hpasmxld: get_options failed: Illegal seek
|...fail!
| $ sudo modprobe ipmi_devintf
| $ sudo /etc/init.d/hpasmd start
| * Starting HP Proliant Health Monitor...
|...done.
| $

Scott says the ipmi_devintf module should have a MODALIAS of
platform:ipmi_si as a hint to userspace to try and load the
ipmi_devintf module when it loads ipmi_si.

The WAP in question is my home WAP; so this isn't trivial to test (as
opposed to if it were a WAP in the office, f.e.), but I'll see if I

[Bug 288718] [NEW] delete through keyboard shortcut jumps to start of folder on completion

2008-10-24 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I open a large folder, scroll half way down, select a file, and
delete it by right clicking it and selecting 'Move to deleted items
folder' or by dragging it to the actual trash can icon, that just works
and leaves me where I was in the folder. However if I do the same thing
but use 'C-t' to delete the file instead, after it's been deleted, I'm
thrown back to the start of the folder for no readily apparent reason.

[Bug 261937] Re: Ubuntu server freeze when running more than one cpu in VMware ESX 3

2008-10-08 Thread James Troup
We've also run into this with VMWare ESX 3.5i and both the 8.04 and
8.04.1 (installer) kernels. Adding 'clocksource=acpi_pm' as mentioned
in the forums thread, fixed it for us. See also:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1007020

Without the workaround we were seeing all sorts of bizarre and often
fatal problems. Tim thinks the kernels in -proposed may also fix this
but I wasn't able to test this yet.

[Bug 281232] [NEW] apt-get dist-upgrade shouldn't run when asked to upgrade between two releases

2008-10-10 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

apt-get dist-upgrade is not a supported upgrade path for upgrading
from one release to another (e.g. hardy to intrepid). However, I see
a lot of people who a) don't realise it's not a supported upgrade path
(for various reasons) and b) don't even realise do-release-upgrade
exists.

I think it'd be really useful to alter apt to check to see whether the
dist-upgrade it's being asked to do is across releases and refuse to
run if it is (or at least require confirmation like removing essential
packages does) and suggest the user use do-release-upgrade instead.

[Bug 270899] [NEW] apache doesn't come back up after weekly logrotate restart

Well, Hardy, so:

apache2-mpm-worker 2.2.8-1ubuntu0.3
logrotate 3.7.1-3
Kernel 2.6.24-19-server

> Do you have any steps you can take to reproduce this action?

Actually, sorry, I've just noticed that the default logrotate file
uses 'reload' rather than 'restart', which is great but I still think
'restart' should work better for a busy server. The fundamental
problem seems to be that it tries to shut down gracefully, but that
takes too long for a busy server. Rather than then shutting down hard
(e.g. kill -9), it just gives up, and immediately tries to start again
(which of course fails).

Anyway, to reproduce: run a very busy webserver and run
'/etc/init.d/apache2 restart'.

[Bug 219914] Re: mod_disk_cache enabled globally by default

2008-06-24 Thread James Troup
This is very simple to reproduce. Take a dapper box, enable mod proxy
and upgrade to hardy. The following code in the postinst will then
kick in.

| if [ $UPGRADE = from_2_0 ]; then
| # Module replacements from previous versions of apache2
| if mod_is_enabled proxy; then
| a2enmod proxy_http
| a2enmod disk_cache
| fi

It's completely unacceptable for disk caching to be unconditionally
enabled across all sites on upgrade just because I was using mod proxy
previously. Please fix this.

[Bug 255124] [NEW] apache's default logging format can be horribly inaccurate in terms of data transferred

2008-08-05 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

>From

| Note that in httpd 2.0, unlike 1.3, the %b and %B format strings do
| not represent the number of bytes sent to the client, but simply the
| size in bytes of the HTTP response (which will differ, for instance,
| if the connection is aborted, or if SSL is used). The %O format
| provided by mod_logio will log the actual number of bytes sent over
| the network.

Unfortunately the Ubuntu packages have a default LogFormat that uses
%b rather than %O. Could we please change that? (I'm told, by a
former Apache developer, that it's not any more expensive than %b.)

This is not a theoretical problem, with the default LogFormat we see
horrificly (and demonstrably) inaccurate logging of data transferred
from our ISO image servers.

Upgrading the SCSI card firmware of the boxes in question did "fix"

[Bug 356279] [NEW] openoffice 'send document as email' no longer obeys gnomes preferred applications

2009-04-06 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

We have several users here who use thunderbird rather than evolution.
They have it set as their mail reader in System -> Preferences ->
Preferred Applications. In Intrepid, when they used the 'send
as email' option in OpenOffice, it opened thunderbird. After
upgrading to Jaunty beta, they report that it tried to start Evolution.
Digging into 'Tools -> Options -> Internet', it seems OpenOffice now

[Bug 416762] [NEW] broken DTMF handling in asterisk 1.4

2009-08-20 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: asterisk

The DTMF handling in Asterisk 1.4 (<< 1.4.23) is quite badly broken.
Even in normal usage, we're able to reliably reproduce both
duplication and out-of-order problems when using out-of-band DTMF.

This bug is known upstream and has been fixed in two parts, one in
1.4.18 and one in 1.4.23. I've attached a debdiff of the two patches
from upstream backported to hardy's asterisk. We're running with
these patches in a local package in production and it fixes DTMF for
us.

TEST CASE:

To reproduce: dial a service[1] that will playback DTMF digits to you
and dial strings of DTMF fast, e.g.

 00112233445566778899
 012345678901234567890123456789
 000111222333444555666777888999

Without this patch, you may see duplicated digits or out of order
problems.

Regression potential: should be limited; these are upstream fixes that
are already in later versions that have been released since Feb 2008
and Dec 2008 respectively without problems.

%%

[1] e.g. using another asterisk server (with working DTMF!)

[Bug 51038] Re: sub-folders disappear on upgrade from breezy to dapper

2006-06-27 Thread James Troup
I tracked this down to the fact that dovecot has apparently changed the
default subscriptions file for the maildir backend from .subscriptions
to subscriptions. I can't find _any_ documentation of this change,
never mind the BIG FLASHING WARNING stuff I would expect. Given that
it's too late to revert this change, I think we need to either have
dovecot automigrate old '.subscriptions' files or look at both (though
then you get into fun issues of which is canonical).

[Bug 51734] linux-sound-base missing depends on module-init-tools

2006-07-03 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

While upgrading from breezy to dapper on a box without module-init-tools
(runs a modular-less kernel), I ran into this:

Setting up linux-sound-base (1.0.10-4ubuntu4) ...
ln: creating symbolic link `/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss' to
`/lib/linux-sound-base/noOSS.modprobe.conf': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing linux-sound-base (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 linux-sound-base

I guess linux-sound-base should either be more resilient to the
directory not existing or depend on module-init-tools.

[Bug 52185] poor search results in gnome-app-install

2006-07-07 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

When searching for 'opera' in gnome-app-install, there's a couple of
problems with the results:

o The exact name match (i.e. the opera package itself) is so far down the list
(8th place) it's not visible by default. Exact name match should be at the top
of the list.

o gnome-app-install seems to be doing searching without any sort of word
delineation which is why there are so many search results for 'opera': anything
with e.g. 'operation' in the Description is listed. I suppose this might be
useful for some search terms and an option to turn this behaviour off may
unnecessarily clutter the UI, but it does make the search results quite
confusing. (e.g. I can't look at the search results for opera and not help
wonder why the heck gthumb is on there)

[Bug 57429] shows channel key in titlebar

xchat shows the channel key in the titlebar. This is obviously broken

[Bug 58226] eog closes silently when asked to open a corrupt png

2006-08-30 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

I have a PNG here which has been corrupted (in transport via email) -
eog silently exits when asked to open the image. This behaviour is very
confusing for the average user who clicks on the (broken) attachment in
their MUA and ... nothing happens.

Unfortunately I can't provide the image in question as it's a scan of
someone's passport. However both file(1) and xloadimage(1) recognise
the PNG as corrupt:

$ file passport.png; xloadimage passport.png
passport.png: PNG image data, CORRUPTED,
PNG file: passport.png - PNG file corrupted by ASCII conversion
passport.png: unknown or unsupported image type
$

So presumably libpng is detecting the corruption and eog just isn't
handling that very gracefully.

[Bug 66783] considers dapper-commercial a third party repository and disable it

2006-10-18 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded Avril's laptop from dapper to edgy and the upgrade
process warned me that it had detected a 3rd party repository and
disabled it for my own safety. But in fact the "3rd party repository"

party or disabled on upgrade, but rather changed to edgy like all the
other sources.list entries.

[Bug 66902] totem-mozilla claims RTSP mime type but can't play them

2006-10-19 Thread James Troup

In Edgy, if you go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2.shtml

totem-mozilla will pop up a dialog informing you that it doesn't know
how to play RTSP streams. Which is nice, but I don't want it to, I (ok,
the user) has realplayer installed and it does know how to play RTSP.

That's an awful lot of memory - even when swapped out (I only have so
much swap). Dapper's gnome-terminal didn't use anything like this much

[Bug 52611] asterisk: voicemail problems are undebuggable

2006-07-11 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

When something goes wrong for a user trying to use the voicemail
application, specifically with entering their mailbox number and/or
password, it's impossible to find out what's gone wrong and/or why
without resorting to adding printfs to the source code. This really
shouldn't be necessary, it should be possible to change the debug level
for the voicemail app and get useful info back (like you can with 'sip

[Bug 52610] ekiga loses dialtones when entering repeated numbers

2006-07-11 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

When using voicemail with asterisk via ekia I noticed that attempts to
enter numbers (extensions, passwords, whatever) with repeated digits
would fail. Adding some debug code to asterisk showed that the the
repeated digits were being collapsed, e.g. typing 6099 would come
through to the other end as 609. If I deliberately paused for a second
after entering the first nine, both nines did get through. I got
several people to independently reproduce this problem with ekiga so I
don't think it's something specific to my setup. I also got several
people to test the same thing with non-ekiga clients and no one else
could reproduce the duplicate digit lossage.
