[Bug 1227777] Re: [browser] No progress feedback while waiting for server to respond

2014-04-02 Thread Giorgio Venturi
I totally agree with the proposed solution, a portion of the scroll bar
(e.g. 10%) will be dedicated to receiving a response from the server.

The progress bar will sit beneath the top bar - please check this
animation:

- Open a new empty tab
- opening a link with target=_blank
- opening a link in a new tab with "Open link in new tab" option

In all cases, the new page will slide from the top. Please refer to this video

[Bug 1357945] Re: [bottom edge] Current bottom edge hint timeout makes it difficult to read the bottom edge action

2014-09-02 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Description changed:

Currently when you open the address book, dialer app, clock app etc, the
bottom edge hint is visible and shows what the action is. This hint is
hidden after a few seconds. This makes it difficult for the user to
understand what the bottom edge does if he didn't read the bottom edge
  text in time.

In the clock app design at

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Kkl7xT8BYo9mT8i3IXh6rPrDlNg6cBxTajahlRYIGlI/edit#slide=id.g18587dd40_029
(Slide 4), the bottom edge text is supposed to show the time to the next
alarm. By hiding this hint, it renders that text useless since it is
  hidden.

- I propose the following change,
- - Follow the same bottom edge behaviour as the Unity 8 Dash which always
shows the bottom edge hint. The hint is hidden only when the user scrolls up.
On scrolling down it is shown immediately.
+ -- Solution --
+ - Hint tab is always displayed by default
+ - When interacting with the content on screen it collapses (e.g. dialler -
typing numbers, address book, clock - scrolling)
+ - When user stops interacting, it reappears after 5 seconds

[Bug 1407730] Re: [browser] Support multiple app instances in the spread

2015-01-07 Thread Giorgio Venturi
Personally, I think there is some good thinking here. I proposed a
similiar idea to the design team for dealing with multiple browser
windows, especially useful when switching between different interaction
modes (i.e. docked phone showing a window UI)

I don't agree with saviq though that the right edge would be more
efficient than the bottom edge. With the bottom edge you can switch tabs
with a single swipe, or worse case swipe & tap. With the right edge
spread gesture, you would be cluttered with information from other apps
(redundant if your only purpouse is to switch tabs in the current app).
Happy to discuss this at the next sprint.

All in all, I feel this bug/suggestion goes beyond the browser and into
all apps that support multiple instances/windows/tab. I'll assign this
to vesa as he is the one working on this.

2015-03-04 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Description changed:

  See http://imgur.com/EZ1lqUI and http://imgur.com/RPRe8Bm

Probably this will happen in other languages as well. We need feedback
from design to decide how to solve the issue.
+
+ UX Solution:
+ There are a few potential solutions, that need to be picked on a case by case
basis:
+
+ 1) By default, the action could have a max width of 2x the default width, but
the app developer can decide to change that to a custom width value
+ 2) By default, The SDK should add a semitransparent gradient like at the end
of the browser URL when it exceeds the available width
+ 3) The translator could come up with a different label. See
http://goo.gl/qj6Pgi or shorten the label eg. compartil.

to trigget scrolling by mistake when trying to interact with the UI)

In ubuntu-system-settings we worked around the behaviour by using
"boundsBehavior: Flickable.StopAtBounds" in our flickables, but that's
changing the scrolling behaviour when panels don't fit on screen

- The issue was discussed on IRC and we are now changing to
- boundsBehavior: (contentHeight > mainPage.height) ?
Flickable.DragAndOvershootBounds : Flickable.StopAtBounds
+ The issue was discussed on IRC and we are now changing to
+ boundsBehavior: (contentHeight > mainPage.height) ?
Flickable.DragAndOvershootBounds : Flickable.StopAtBounds

We agreed it would be good to have a bug to discuss the default
behaviour and see if we need that changed in the toolkit, so here we
  go... ;-)
+
+ Design solution:
+ If flickable content does not exceed the available space, it should not flick
at all.

[Bug 1428757] [NEW] [SDK] Header should be responsive for Tablet and Desktop form factors

2015-03-05 Thread Giorgio Venturi
Public bug reported:

As part of our convergence path to Tablet and Desktop form factors, we will
have more screen real estate and less constrained.
Therefore, we have more space to provide additional affordances.
- Optional subheader, with increased flexibility
- Max 4 slots on the right
- Capability of adding input field expanded or dropdown (not both)
- Capability of adding tabs
- Capability of having responsive labels display - once breakpoint is reached,
labels are displayed

[Bug 1432696] [NEW] [SDK] Bottom edge header improvement

Public bug reported:

When user does a bottom edge gesture to show a new view (Address Book,

[Bug 1432696] Re: [SDK] Bottom edge header improvement

2015-03-18 Thread Giorgio Venturi
1) If a new page with header is swiped in from the bottom (let's call it
swipedPage), will scrolling down in the swipedPage hide the header as usual? Or
should the new header always be locked?
A: It's up the developer to decide, it's a standard header

2) Can the user tap on the down-chevron to hide swipedPage? Or does only a drag
down work?
A: Yes, you can also tap

3) Can the user drag down in the full header to hide the swipedPage, or only in
the down-chevron area + the title text (that excludes the area with actions on
the right side)?
A: Title & Arrow

** Description changed:

When user does a bottom edge gesture to show a new view (Address Book,
Dialer, Clock, etc) the new header should never have a chevron pointing
left, as it seems to suggest the wrong direction for the movement.

The header of the new View should always have a chevron pointing down.
Also, it should allow people using a gesture and dismiss the new screen
- by dragging or swiping the title of the header downward
+ by dragging or swiping the [chevron & title area of the header] downward

[Bug 1377145] Re: inconsistent use of colour for restart menu when changing language

2014-10-07 Thread Giorgio Venturi
According to our values, green is used for positive actions and confirmations,
whereas red is used for negative and irreversible actions.
https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1nFm8xiYhKXXuEO_IvMXoD0lASbYzYXva1BWMVanU3iw/edit#heading=h.fnizdnqm9lbf

In this case, I would use Green for restart and Neutral for Cancel.

[Bug 1198714] Re: [browser] Switching between tabs cumbersome

2014-11-04 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Description changed:

  Current Behaviour:
  - When switching between tabs, I have to make two touches. Most other
browsers only require one.
  - When switching between tabs, there is very limited space to display tab
specific information.
  - Tab icons do not have a number indicating the number of tabs open.
  - We cannot switch between tabs using the left-to-right swipe motion.
  - We are forced to use the in-browser tab switching because we cannot have
multiple instances of the browser app.
  - I can have a GMail web app, and Gmail open in a seperate tab, but I would
have to switch between them differently. This can be fairly confusing because
the windows aren't lableled when switching unless you go to the main Apps page.

  Expected Behaviour:
  - Use a switching behaviour similar to the way we switch between
notifications to switch between tabs. I posted a video about it here:
https://plus.google.com/113548024460495540073/posts/LKk7yHvFY68
  - Alternatively, abandon the entire Tab functionality and only have new
browser app instances. This will make the experience more aligned with the Web
App experience.
NOTE: I remember reading an article regarding windows switching tab
switching. The article explained that the introduction of Tabs in applications
was an attempt to take control of windows switching from the window manager. I
don't have a reference, but I believe it was written with Ubuntu in mind. If
knows about this article, it probably gives good use cases to abandone tabbing
all together.
+
+ UX Comment:
+ The new bottom edge functionality will address the issues above.
+ See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ux/+bug/1329943

[Bug 1124071] Re: [tabs] Cannot add Tabs programmatically

2014-11-04 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Description changed:

There seems to be no easy way to add a Tab to Tabs programmatically.

I would be nice to be able add, remove and edit Tabs dynamically. So far
I haven't found a way to do this.

I have made an Android style ViewPager based on ListView. It is quite
easy to update the pages with ListModel methods.
+
+ UX Comments
+ Tabs are deprecated, use the new header instead, or headers sections

[Bug 1267592] Re: [sdk] Haptic feedback (vibration) is inconsistent between UI elements

2014-11-04 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Description changed:

Having haptic feedback on the dash is great! However, having it for
normal tap activation isn't. Normal activation of dash elements is
usually instant, so no additional feedback is required.

Currently these elements have instant haptic feedback:
  - apps in the Dash
  - keyboard buttons (by default)
  - System Settings categories
  - page stack items
  - pushbuttons (e.g. in the power dialog)
  - checkboxes (e.g. in Language & Text settings)
  - switches
  - Browser toolbar buttons, except for Add Bookmark

  These do not:
  - apps in the Launcher
  - unlock screen and phone dialpad buttons
  - toolbar buttons everywhere except Browser
  - links in Web pages
  - pushbuttons or checkboxes in Web pages
  - text fields anywhere

One way to resolve this inconsistency would be to reserve haptic
feedback for long-press. The user often doesn't know if it's been
triggered or not. Having vibration happen when long-press is recognized
might be the best use of this feature.
+
+ *** UX Solution ***
+ We agree with the above solution. Haptic feedback should be reserved for long
press & keyboard buttons (on by default).
+ All the other elements should not have haptic feedback.

(adding this to the design backlog & assigning this to Rae)
2) On the tablet/desktop, we will use the popover component check these:

[Bug 1391839] Re: Cannot change boundsBehaviour on Flickable in Expandable

2015-02-04 Thread Giorgio Venturi
** Changed in: ubuntu-ux
Status: In Progress => Fix Committed

** Description changed:

Right now it's quite unfortunate that some Expandables can be dragged
  and overshot (Flickable.DragAndOvershootBounds).

Could the Expandable expose the boundsBehaviour property or in some
  other way make this changeable?
+
+ UX Solution:
+ We should have a good default, then allow developers to change the property.
+
+ For example, an app developer might not want to have overshoot at all
+ and provide a different hint that the list/area boundaries have been
+ reached.
