[Bug 1323217] Re: Gnome3 slow when when pressing for the first time after reboot

2014-05-26 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
You should probably give us more info regarding your hardware.

I have a GS distro on my old Dell Latitude E6400 and this is what I
observe too. Meanwhile, this is 4-year old+ hardware so I am not
expecting miracles. The more recent Latitude E6440 I use everyday
handles it perfectly.

Confirmation the fix is working in the debian unstable package. Should
make it in Saucy as part of the debian unstable sync, but should
consider backporting this patch to the versions in 12.04, 12.10 and

[Bug 1308908] [NEW] keyboard layout detection chooses "variant" instead of "macbook" on a Macbook 6.1

2014-04-17 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Whilst covering the following test case
(http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/testcases/1301/info), I encountered
a bug regarding the automatic keyboard layout selection. I am using a
Macbook 6.1 with a French keyboard and tried to install the Ubuntu
Trusty Final ISO proposed in the test case.

The automatic keyboard layout selector wrongly concludes that I am using
a French "variant" layout instead of the French "macbook" one. This has
no impact on the letter characters, but special characters such as '-'
or '/' are positionned differently.

I would expect the installer to guess the right keyboard layout straight
away.

[Bug 1301839] Re: AMD Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8690M[1002:6660] Low-graphic mode with Trusty

2014-04-19 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
@Pali: I am glad it worked for you, but this is not an acceptable
solution for less technical users who just want Ubuntu to work straight
after boot.

I currently dual boot with Debian unstable, which is running kernel
3.13, mesa 10.1, xorg 1.15 and GNOME 3, and I have none of these
problems. Both the opensource and proprietary drivers worked painlessly.

I don't know whether the probblem comes from Unity itself or the patched
kernel that Ubuntu runs, but, as of today, I cannot use the opensource
driver because of this bug and cannot use the proprietary driver because
Unity refuses to load (same as reported here:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?93838-Ubuntu-14-04-Kernel-3-13
-and-AMD-Catalyst-issue). The only option that works is with nomodeset
(Unity running software acceleration), great !

[Bug 1277275] Re: nfft for older releases

2014-04-20 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Hi Nico. You are probably confusing the NFFT library provided by the
"nfft" package and its Python wrappers (pyNFFT) which are developped
independently. So far, I have only packaged the library in Debian, which
then made its way to Ubuntu.

I am intending to package the pyNFFT wrappers some time soon and
backport both nfft and pynfft to supported versions of Ubuntu via ppa. I
can't give you an ETA on this work though, as I am pretty busy atm.

[Bug 947038] Re: Rhythmbox: Add to Playlist option creates a playlist with an empty name

2014-04-21 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Still applicable to the version of Rhytmbox shipped with 12.04. This bug
is still not fixed in the latest version in 14.04, although the
behaviour has changed a bit.

In Rhythmbox v3.0.1, "Add to Playlist" -> "New Playlist" still creates a
Playlist with a blank name but moves straight to renaming mode to allow
the user to enter a playlist name right after adding the files. However,
one can still create a playlist with a blank name inadvertently by just
clicking somewhere else.

A more adequate behaviour would be to provide "New Playlist" as default
name regardless and keep the current behaviour of moving to renaming
mode should the user choose to rename the playlist to a different name
straight away.

Marked as invalid, as your description is a wishlist bug for a different

[Bug 974644] [NEW] transmission crashes when adding a torrent

2012-04-05 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04, I have a repeatable crash of Transmission with the
following scenario:

1) Open a .torrent file
2) Set the "Destination Folder" manually by browsing it with the file manager.
3) Select a partition that is not mounted yet. The partition should be now
mounted.
4) Choose the target directory in this partition.
5) Final click on "Open".
6) Transmission closes unexpectedly.

Note: the crash occurs only when the selected destination folder is on a
partition that is being mounted while browsing it. It does not occur if
the partition has been already mounted via fstab or nautilus before.

[Bug 990381] [NEW] touchpad unresponsive after suspend

2012-04-28 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 up to date as of 28/04/2012. Sometimes after
suspending my computer (Dell Vostro V131), when I wake it up and
successfully enter my password, I get back to my desktop with a
completely unresponsive trackpad. The mouse pointer won't move at all,
however the left and right click buttons seem to work.

The only solution I found so far was to log off using Ctrl+Alt+Suppr and
using the keyboard to select "Log off", and then log in again.
Eventually, the touchpad becomes functional again. This is quite
annoying since any suspended work is lost due to the back to back log-
off and log-in operation.

[Bug 945590] [NEW] missing icon for Spyder

2012-03-03 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Most likely a duplicate from #890243, but I am surprised that the
package has been updated from version 2.0.12 in Oneiric to 2.1.8 in
Precise and still the missing icon bug was not fixed. I am using Gnome

not show up in the launcher.

In the original bug report, Peter Wurtz proposed to modify the .desktop
file to include an icon entry (currently missing) with the right path to
the icon file, located in
"/usr/share/pyshared/spyderlib/images/spyder.svg". The line to add in

[Bug 947038] [NEW] Rhythmbox: Add to Playlist option creates a playlist with an empty name

2012-03-05 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Selecting a few files from my music library and selectionning "Add to
Playlist" -> "New Playlist" creates a playlist with an empty name. I
expected the playlist to be named "New Playlist" as it happens when one
creates it manually by right clicking on the left panel.

[Bug 947031] Re: Rhythmbox becomes unresponsive when navigating through long song files using the progress bar

2012-03-05 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras before using Rhythmbox, which
should have pulled all the gstreamer plugins (ffmpeg, bad, ugly and
fluendo). I double-checked my installation anyway, the gstreamer0.10
-plugins-ugly is installed.

[Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken

2012-05-11 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Same as Pablo here,

I did not manage to identify repoductible steps for this bug, but it
still happens on a daily use. Again, a classic copy/paste or rename
entry in the context menu appears greyed out, although you can still
click on it and the action is eventually performed.

Re: [Bug 1272933] Re: [Dell Latitude E6440] suspend leads to black screen, laptop does not enter sleep.

2014-03-16 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
My Debian sid test was with the open source drivers and resulted in the
same problem with suspend.

However, there has been a recent BIOS update (version A02 -> A05) released
by DELL. Since the update, it seems that the suspend problem just went
away, both on Ubuntu LTS and Debian Sid. Can't say for sure that this is
due to the BIOS update (no detailed changelog available), but the timeline
points to it.

[Bug 1272933] [NEW] [Dell Latitude E6440] suspend leads to black screen, laptop does not enter sleep.

2014-01-26 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Latitude E6440 laptop
(http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201306-13687/), with the
switchable AMD graphics option, running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS.

I followed the installation instructions provided by Dell:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/rc1046313/DriverDetails/Product/latitude-e6440-laptop?driverId=Y24FF&osCode=1204A&fileId=3332894306&languageCode=EN&categoryId=CS

And after installation of Ubuntu and the Dell driver package, the laptop
is running very well. However, I suffer from a bug preventing my laptop
to suspend. On suspend, the screen just turns black but the laptop is
still powered on. None of the key combinations I tried was able to
restore the display, forcing me to do a hard shut down.

Suspend sometimes does work but is very rare. I could not identify a
pattern. One time where suspend worked consecutively, I got a kernel
panic, which I took a screenshot of using my phone.

I have also tried performing suspend on Ubuntu 12.04.3 using both Live
CD and a clean install, but same thing happens. I also have an install
of Debian Unstable, same symptoms with suspend on kernel version 3.12
and 3.13.

Please let me know what type of information I can provide to help fix
this bug. Please be verbose, as my kernel debugging skills are non-
existent.

[Bug 1347487] [NEW] backport version 2.3.x to Ubuntu Trusty LTS

2014-07-23 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Spyder has become a significant piece of software in the scientific
community, providing an IDE with a familiar, MATLAB-like, interface.

Amongst the improvements in the recent 2.3 release, support for Python 3
is a significant milestone. I believe this alone makes the release worth
backporting, since most scientific workstation running Linux use LTS
releases these days.

[Bug 1090663] [NEW] erase disk results in error message + 100% CPU hang

2012-12-15 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

It has been already reported that USB-creator is broken on 12.10, with
USB images not being bootable. However, I also use this tool for quickly
formatting my USB pen drive before using unetbootin. However, doing so
results in a weird error message popping up and a 100% CPU hang coming
from udisks (see attached screenshots). In the meantime, USB-creator
stays stuck on "Erasing" indefinitely and I have to manually kill the
udisks-helper-* job in order to get full control on my machine back.

This is a serious issue. Together with the non-bootable Live-USB, it
makes this tool completely useless on my machine. From a user
perspective, It does not feel very serious for a Ubuntu-branded app (cf.
app icon).

[Bug 1132712] [NEW] Wrong color theme in media control buttons for Rhythmbox in indicator-sound

2013-02-25 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 13.04 alpha, up to date as of 25/02/2013.

Media controls for Rhythmbox in sound menu no longer look consistent
with the Ambiance theme. The buttons appear as white on grey, where it
should be white on dark gray as it used to be.

No problems with the Radiance theme though, so this bug might be related
to the Ambiance theme rather than the indicator-sound package.

[Bug 1153216] Re: Spyder does not start with PyQt4 4.10

2013-03-10 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
I manually commented the version check in site-
packages/spyderlib/requirements.py (line 48 to 51). Now spyder starts
correctly.

A patch was merged upstream but is unlikely to hit version under 2.13,
unless manually applied. Since the software just cannot be used without
that fix on Raring, this bug should be marked as important.

[Bug 1052679] [NEW] liferea fails to open selected feed to browser on first launch

2012-09-18 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

When launched for the first time, Liferea refuse to open the selected
feeds into your browser and notifies it in the bottom left corner of the
UI. This can be easily fixed by going to the preferences, in the browser
section. The strange things is that even if you don't modify anything in
the browser section, the "open in browser" is back working.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1) install liferea for the first time
2) update current feeds
3) try opening one by double-click on the its entry, normally nothing happens
and a message is displayed on the bottom left corner
4) go to Tools -> Preferences
5) navigate to "Browser"
6) exit the Preferences
7) try opening the feed again, now it should be working

Pretty sure I had the same behaviour on Debian Wheezy as well, so might
be good to report upstream if the bug is confirmed.

[Bug 1052860] [NEW] right-click option "format" launches 2 instances of Nautilus when finished

2012-09-19 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

To format a USB pendrive, I usually right-click it on the unity bar and
select "Format...". This is very handy as it is a user-friendly command
to an otherwise more cumbersome manipulation in Disk Utility. However
when done, the script tries to launch Nautilus on the newly formated USB
pendrive. On my computer, this results to 2 instances of Nautilus being
launched instead of a single one. Both of them correctly default to the
Pendrive mount point.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1) Insert the pendrive to format
2) Right-click on its icon appearing in the Unity launch bar
3) Select "Format..."
4) Leave the default options, ie: FAT and New Volume
5) Wait for the script to finish
6) When done, 2 instances of Nautilus gets launched.

Expected results:
- Only one instance should be launched

[Bug 1007372] [NEW] spyder: order of menu entries is messed up after startup

2012-06-01 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Spyder v2.1.9

After starting up Spyder, the oder of the menu entries is messed up. Most of
the time, I get the menu entries in the following order:
Run, Source, Search, Edit, File, Interpreter, Tools, View
as opposed to:
File, Edit, Search, Source, Run, Interpreter, Tools, View

The menu seems to fix itself up after some time or when losing and
taking back the scope. So not a particularly annoying bug in that state.

clicking on the Spyder icon in the unity bar opens Spyder. clicking the
minimise button in Spyder, minimises the window but does not show on the
unity icon.

attempting to open spyder by clicking the icon the unity bar, opens
another instance of spyder, however alt-tabing and super+w will allow
you to un-minimise the window.

> I can only open a second instance of Spyder by using the dashboard.
Again the icon in the unity bar can only be used to restore the scope of
the current Spyder instance(s), not to fire new ones.

[Bug 780272] Re: spyder - object inspector does not automatically show documentation while calling a function

2012-08-03 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
What version are you using on Windows ?

Version 2.0.6 is outdated, the focus today is on the 2.1 series which
features a lot of improvement. I use version 2.1.9 available in Ubuntu
12.04 and this feature is working.

I would suggest you to upgrade to a version of Ubuntu featuring Spyder
2.1.x. Another solution would be to uninstall the outdated version and
install the latest version from source (see official website for details
and tutorials).

[Bug 1033174] [NEW] Improvement in the default keyboard shortcuts (lock screen and shutdown menu)

2012-08-05 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

To improve the user experience, I suggest the following changes in the default
keyboard shortcuts :
- CTRL+ALT+L for locking the screen
- CTRL+ALT+DEL for firing the shutdown menu

These improvements will add better consistancy between the different DEs
and also more comfort from Windows users. Myself, I use Xubuntu on my
netbook and Ubuntu on my main machine and find the different shortcut
for locking the screen between the two rather confusing and unecessary.

[Bug 1033865] [NEW] vim-gtk wrong ordering of the menu entries

2012-08-07 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

When opening Vim-gtk, sometimes the menu entries get messed up similar to this
bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/spyder/+bug/1007372

I have attached a screenshot which shows this happening. After some
time, the ordering of the menu entries fixes itself. Not sure if both
bugs are related though but the symptoms and bahaviour seem identical.

[Bug 1037457] [NEW] inappropriate color theme in the contact list

2012-08-16 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

A slight usability issue, certainly because of the default empathy color
theme. On the contact list, when using the drop-dowm menu to set your
status ("Available", "Busy"...), the text color is dark grey on a black
background. Unless you are lucky to use a monitor with strong backlight,
this is obviously not the wisest choice for readability. Hoovering the
menu entries with the mouse does reveal the text better (orange
background with white text) but this is not intuitive at first.

Proposed solution :
Instead, the color layout in the drop-down menu of the contact list should be
set to white font on dark background as it is for the Me Menu under the mail
icon. One might argue that people are more likely to use the Me Menu instead of
the contact list. Still, this fix will bring a little more consistancy between
all the available options for the user.

[Bug 1050311] [NEW] playback progress bar gets stuck although song is still playing

2012-09-13 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

While doing the laptop tests for beta 1, I encountered a weird bug on
Rhythmbox's UI. I tried to move the playback forward using the progress
bar on the top right, but missed the bar and ended up clicking a little
bit too high.

The results were: 1) song kept playing as if nothing happened (good
since I apparently "missed" the progress bar click zone), 2) the
playback progress bar got stuck at the playback poisition at which I
made the click. The song eventually kept going until the end, with the
playback progress still stuck somewhere in the middle in the song. See
screenshot attached, that displays the invalid playback position
although the song playback had already finished.

Steps to reproduce this bug:
1) Launch a song with Rhythmbox. Mine was the one contained in the example
folder in my home folder.
2) Click the playback progress bar on the top right corner of the UI to move
the song forward. That should work as expected.
3) Click again but aim to a position lower or higher than the bar, your pointer
should turn into a hand for a fraction of second if the manipulation succeeded.
4) The playback should resume but the progress bar should now be stuck.
5) Restarting the song does not unlock the progress bar, for me I had to
correctly register a click on the bar as in step #2 to get the progress bar
alive again.

Expected behaviour:
Not too sure about this one. If correct registration of the progress bar click
is assumed to be when one clicks ON the bar itself, then aiming a little too
under or upper should not do anything. However, if the registration zone is
expected to cover the height of the playback tool bar (i.e. the height of the
Pause button), then wherever I click in the progress bar zone should move the
progress bar at the right position (i.e. the registered relative x-position of
my mouse pointer) and keep the playback and its progress alive.

As usual, let me know whether further testing is required.

[Bug 1050311] Re: playback progress bar gets stuck although song is still playing

2012-09-13 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
I just compared with Rhythmbox 2.96 on Precise and the click
registration zone gets displayed between 2 horizontal lines (see my
mouse pointer on screenshot). Clicking elsewhere does nothing.

Again I don't know how the new design, where the progress bar has now
been moved to the right, intended to manage this. I suppose the same
mechanism is still in use and a click registration zone still exists
albeit not explicitly displayed. If this is the case, I would suggest to
use a similar behaviour as in the working Precise version, while keeping
the currently layout which arguably looks prettier.

[Bug 1051217] [NEW] No "shutdown" or "restart" options in the Gnome menu of the installation media (Gnome remix alpha2)

2012-09-15 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

The Gnome menu of the Gnome-remix alpha2 live media is missing a
Shutdown or Restart entry. Only Switch session and Suspend are available
which is not straightfoward if you chose to keep testing in live mode
after installation and wanted to end your session later. The shutdown
and restart entries are present on my installation so it seems to be
there, but not enabled in live session mode.

Note for people who wants to make a clean restart from the live session:

Personally, I did a "switch session" and used the upper right "power
button" icon on the login manager to restart. Launching the terminal
with a "sudo restart" should equally well.

[Bug 1051390] [NEW] Very low frame rate under unity

2012-09-15 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Public bug reported:

I have got 2 laptops running Ubuntu 12.04 and regularly updated. Both of
them have sandy-bridge processors with integreated Intel GPUs.

Both of them see very bad in-game performance in simutrans, where barely
12 fps are achieved. At this frame rate, the game is pretty much
unplayable. I tried playing it on Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Debian Wheezy
(Gnome 3) and managed to achieve 25 fps for every of them, which
suggests unity/compiz is likely to be at fault.

Since recent point updates to unity were supposed to tackle gaming
performance, I am leaving this as an issue related to simutrans. If you
guys think this is still a general issue regarding unity, please feel
free to change the package targeted by this bug report accordingly, or
mark it as a duplicate.

[Bug 713088] Re: 10de:0429 plymouth boot screen corrupted with nouveau

I observed the same behaviour as #29 on my Latitude E6400 with Nvidia
Quadro NVS 160M graphics. Did the line 70 trick and the splash screen
gets corrupted for a couple of seconds before plymouth shows up
correctly.

[Bug 887177] Re: upstream 2.1.1 is released

2012-01-11 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Unfortunately manually. Again because of Ubuntu vs Fedora update policy
(Ubuntu freezes package until next release whereas Fedora works closer
to upstream and is more keen on releasing minor updates), chances to get
a backport update are very low. That's what PPA are made for. Again this
is Ubuntu specific due to its release policy, whereas for Fedora I know
spyder v2.1.6 is on updates-testing right now.

So this is defintely not a bug, and the answers are:
1) either start a PPA for 11.10 and lower and push a request for update to the
2.1 series in next 12.04 (2.1.6 is in Debian sid right now so that should do)
2) or install from source as in post #4
3) or use Fedora where this package will be more up to date in the main repos

Hope that helped.

[Bug 890243] Re: No icon in Unity launcher

2012-01-07 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
I managed to fix it manually by editing the spyder.desktop, which is
missing an icon entry.

1) download the icon from the project page:
http://code.google.com/p/spyderlib/logo?cct=1322729688
2) move it to /usr/share/icons/spyder.png
3) add line "Icon=spyder.png" to /usr/share/applications/spyder.desktop

Would it be difficult to edit the existing package with this fix ?

[Bug 887177] Re: upstream 2.1.1 is released

2012-01-08 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Building it from source is as easy as downloading the latest source
tarball (2.1.7 is about to be released) and performing "sudo python
setup.py install" in the extracted source directory. Since 11.10 is a
point release, we will have to wait for the next 12.04 for getting this
package updated.

Perhaps should you already push your demand in the development mailing
list as a feature request. Besides nothing prevents you from starting a
PPA with an updated Spyder package for oneiric and below.

[Bug 864379] Re: Low volume sound on oneiric

2011-12-30 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Same here, whereas sound level is normal on Centos 6 (kernel 2.6.32).
Same observation as Lee, newer distro all have this issue. Maybe a
permanent fix won't make it to this release but a documented workaround
(if any exists) would be more than welcome.

[Bug 1155559] Re: Icon in unity launcher looks too small

2013-03-23 Thread Ghislain Vaillant
Seems to be jabref32.xpm still.

To be honnest, I believe that this bug also concerns the way Unity
renders icons. This all comes to the observation that, in Gnome-Shell,
this icon looks the right size, although a bit on the blurry side
probably because of the re-scaling involved. Same thing happens with
numerous other apps, like unetbootin for instance.

So, I am not sure patching the original debian package to use a bigger
icon will really solve the root of the problem though. At best, this
specific icon will look bigger on Unity and less blurry in Gnome-Shell.
IMO, Unity should be able to figure out by itself the best way to resize
an icon in order to make it look good in the launcher.
