[Bug 156882] Re: Javascript 1.5 does not work in Firefox
I beg forgiveness from Firefox and Ubuntu. I got a few minutes to poke around with the problem, and the issue is totally the website's fault. For those who are having the same issue as I am, I've found a workaround until the WebTycho folks at UMUC get their code straight: In the URL bar, type 'about:config' to get to Firefox's configuration preferences. In the filter bar, type 'general.useragent.vendor' Right-click 'general.useragent.vendor' and click modify Delete 'Ubuntu', leaving the line blank, and click OK Everything seems to be working for me now. I had missed a line at the top of the WebTycho's "Check your browser" page that called "/js/browsercheck.js" That page contains all the javascript they use to try to guess what you're running. Attempting to figure out what they're trying to do (I don't know javascript nearly as well as I know other languages), I found they were using various useragent settings to determine the javascript version of the client. After fooling around with most of my own useragent preferences (on my Gutsy box and the Feisty box I hadn't yet upgraded) and checking the browsercheck.js page often, I guessed my way to the above workaround. If you compare the screen before and after the change: On my Fiesty box (Does work) User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20061201 Firefox/2.0.0.6 (Ubuntu-feisty) Gutsy before (Does not work) User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071022 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.8 Gutsy after (Does work) User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071022 Firefox/2.0.0.8 Looking at some of the comments sprinkled about, they haven't updated their detection javascript since 2003. I'll be sending them an email to see if they can get the thing updated, but I'm not holding my breath. >From what I've been reading, you shouldn't be using the UserAgent field for browser capabilities anyway. [Bug 191024] Re: Synaptics touchpad not detected
Hi I have the same problem here too with a DELL Latitude D820 with nvidia graphics card. The Synaptics touchpad is working with hardy, but not configurable. I'm using the "nvidia" driver. I'm able to add the Synaptics to xorg.conf so that i can disable "click on tab" in "mouse preferences" but then my screeresolution is messed up. After new installation and after reconfigure xorg, the touchpad is not configurable anymore. Also i cannot get gsynaptics to work no matter what i try i get SHM... not enabled error. ** Attachment added: "laptop" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12198376/laptop -- Synaptics touchpad not detected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 156882] Re: Javascript 1.5 does not work in Firefox
I'm having the same issues. I did a fresh install of Gutsy, and Tycho is showing up as Javascript 1.4 (Firefox 2.0.0.8) for me as well. I googled several other sites searching for browser compatibility, and the several that I found all showed as Javascript 1.5 on Gutsy. Looking in the source of the tycho page, the javascript version is found by using the 'is.js' function. -code snippet- JavaScript Version document.write(is.js); document.write((is.js > 1.4) ? "Yes" : "No"); -code snippet- document.write(is.js) is returning a 1.4 ("No"), which results in failure for compatibility on Tycho. However, if I look at the same page in Firefox on Feisty (I've forstalled upgrading Firefox (2.0.0.6) in Feisty until this get resolved, can't lose my access for school, after all), the javascript shows up as 1.5 and everything is good. I've looked around in the page for anything that might be an issue, and the source html on 2.0.0.6 and 2.0.0.8 is the same, so I'm thinking it might not be a webpage problem (that was my first instinct). So I think it might be a problem with either Firefox itself or the version that Ubuntu released. This is the first time I've chimed in on a bug report, I usually find my solutions via the forums, but this issue seems a bit too specific for me to just wait it out like I usually do until the problem is fixed. Looking forward to a bit of help. -Fox -- Javascript 1.5 does not work in Firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156882 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Same thing here. I think it may be caused by the latest kernel update. I had installed Hardy 3 days ago, fully updated it and the Nvidia driver installed fine. [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
I wish Linux proponents would decide whether you want people to switch to Linux from Windows or OS X, or not. I'm just trying Ubuntu again (Karmic) after last trying it (I think Dapper Drake was the last version I'd tried previously). It has improved tremendously since then but now I read this condescending attitude by the developer and I'm wondering what is is that makes Linux developers so arrogant at times. You guys all have Asperger's Syndrome or something? If I want to be treated badly by a company that thinks that I should have no say at all in their design decisions, I can just keep using a Mac (in case you are wondering, I am NOT a Mac fanboy — in fact I sincerely doubt I'll ever buy another, it has disappointed me in many ways). Anyway, having used a Mac, I would say that it would not be a big upset to me if the buttons were on the left provided that the order emulated that which Mac users are accustomed. But it's troublesome to me that you want everyone that has learned how to get around in Windows, and/or on a Mac, to learn yet a third button pattern. This is not an insignificant thing - I, like many other computer users, have developed a "muscle memory". Maybe you don't experience this and don't understand it, but some of us don't cope with arbitrary design changes as well as others. If there were some valid reason for this — if it were necessary because of some new feature or something, or even because of some legal issue, then I could understand it, but no one is saying that. So the way it comes across to me, and probably to many others who've noticed this change, is that you're doing it simply because you can, just to prove you wield some kind of power over others. It's like you're saying, "Look, Dad, I can force people all over the world to change the way they do things! I can make them unlearn YEARS of habit and use the computer the way *I* want them to use it!" Many of your users are telling you that this MATTERS to them, and your response is essentially "Let them eat cake!" Sure, those who are knowledgeable enough can change the button order, but then you run into another issue, non-standard operation between machines. Let me give you an example. When I got my Mac Mini, I was coming from a Windows machine and wanted to use my Windows keyboard and have it operate as it always had, so I went out and got a third-party program (keyremap4mackbook) that let me switch keys to make them more Windows-like. I'm happy, and certainly not frustrated by the keyboard anymore at all (though I was very frustrated the first month, before I found that program). Trouble is, my son also has a Mac, and he does not remap his keys. So guess what happens when he tries to use mine? He gets really frustrated because he's used to a keyboard that operates the way Apple intended, which is non-standard from Windows. Now you are going to have users that are used to the Mac OS X, and to Windows, that will change the button order first thing. Then you will have other users that either don't have the "muscle memory" issue, or are too uninformed to switch the button order. So what happens when a Linux admin who is used to the new order has to work on a system where the user has changed the order (or vise versa)? Suddenly you are raising the frustration level for thousands, maybe millions of users - and for what? For no other reason than to prove that you are the big, bad developers that can force that kind of change. How would you like being forced to drive a car where the order of the gas and brake pedals were reversed? What if there were no good reason for the change, except some designer at the auto manufacturer wanted to throw his weight around? How many people do you suppose would buy that car? And, how many people do you suppose would badmouth that company for making a ridiculous design change? Please think about it. Right now relatively few people know about this — I've just stumbled across comments in the last couple days, and I can already tell you that if you think there's a firestorm of negative commentary now, just wait to you actually come out with a release. On the other hand, if I were behind a competing Linux distribution, I'd definitely be encouraging you not to yield to all of us who are telling you this is the wrong thing to do. I'd be telling you to stick to your guns and damn the torpedoes — after all, what do users know, and what do they matter anyway? -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Have you been reversing the changes when they "have no effect" each time, or leaving them in? The UseEvents and disabling VSync are normally used together. If you haven't done so already, try both at the same time. -Nick On Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 3:52 PM, Stefan Pappalardo wrote: > Sorry but I have to tell that the option UseEvents has no effect on the > issue of freezing tv randomly. > > A little summery to easy the next steps: > 1.) Re: [Bug 310178] Re: livetv freezes randomly
Ah... I bet this is at least part of your issue. You have several conflicting packages installed. Try this: sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-* Followed by: sudo apt-get install nvidia-180-modaliases nvidia-180-kernel-source nvidia-glx-180 nvidia-settings && sudo reboot Then you will need to set the xorg.conf options I sent previously along with disabling vsync in nvidia-settings. -Nick On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 2:57 AM, Stefan Pappalardo wrote: > ii nvidia-173-modaliases 173.14.16-0ubuntu1 > Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org drive > ii nvidia-180-kernel-source 180.44-0ubuntu1 >NVIDIA binary kernel module source > ii nvidia-180-libvdpau180.44-0ubuntu1 >Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix > ii nvidia-180-modaliases 180.44-0ubuntu1 >Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org drive > ii nvidia-71-modaliases 71.86.08-0ubuntu1 >Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org drive > ii nvidia-96-modaliases 96.43.10-0ubuntu1 >Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org drive > ii nvidia-common 0.2.11 > Find obsolete NVIDIA drivers > ii nvidia-glx-180 180.44-0ubuntu1 >NVIDIA binary Xorg driver > ii nvidia-settings180.25-0ubuntu1 >Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driv > > -- > livetv freezes randomly > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310178 > You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mythbuntu > Developers, which is subscribed to mythbuntu-common in ubuntu. > -- livetv freezes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Prior to the reboot, reinstall all of them. It won't affect their configuration. I have done this myself many times. Also you could try this: sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-common -Nick On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 4:27 AM, Nick Fox wrote: > Try removing nvidia-96, nvidia-71, nvidia-173, and nvidia-common > > -Nick > > > On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 4:22 AM, Nick Fox wrote: > >> I will look at the depends on the package...it shouldn't depend on all of >> those >> >> -Nick >> >> >> On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 4:11 AM, Stefan Pappalardo < >> stefan.pappala...@gmx.de> wrote: >> >>> OK, I did it. Re: [Bug 310178] Re: livetv freezes randomly
Did you try to dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-common? nvidia-common 'tries' to detect obsolete drivers and remove them. A modeline has nothing to do with modual aliases (modaliases).I have seen in the past where multiple versions of the nvidia packages being installed will cause oddities or failure of the driver. -Nick On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 4:50 AM, Stefan Pappalardo wrote: > Why do you think the modaliases can conflict anything? [Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control
Only in that there is no way to get any information about why Totem isn't playing any audio while other applications on the desktop can. -- No audio, no message, disabled volume control https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control
At this time Totem is working on my system. I believe that what happens is that one of the many sound systems (pulse, esd, alsa, oss) gets stuffed up, and totem stops working because it happens to use that interface. It seems like Skype is what usually leads to the messed up sound system. Rhythmbox is generally not affected. However, at times the sound system gets further jammed so that the flash plugin in firefox siezes up. So this is probably more of a design limitation in Totem than a bug, but the error reporting in Totem could be improved. I used to be a developer for a Linux distribution, and if I still were I'd write a diagnostic application to show which sound systems were installed on the system and test how each of them was working. -- No audio, no message, disabled volume control https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control
Totem could explain why it has disabled the volume control and suggest where a user might look to resolve the issue. Whether that is a bug depends on the project manager and the policies for pre-installed system components. Given that the current state of the Linux audio system is "a turd pile in a cesspool on a cruftberg" it couldn't hurt to be ready for anything. -- No audio, no message, disabled volume control https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
