[Bug 355996] [NEW] Power Management FAILS most of the time

2009-04-05 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release 8.10
Kernel 2.6.27-11 (generic)
GNOME 2.24.1

Power Management FAILS to perform as expected MOST of the time because
it is overly concerned about CPU cycles. It would be quite useful to
have a check box which would instruct both screensaver and power
management to IGNORE CPU utilization and shut of the screen as directed.
This problem also exists in the 9.04 beta.

[Bug 352549] [NEW] VLC prevents power manager from working properly when a wmv movie has been paused

2009-03-31 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

VLC media player 0.9.4 Grishenko
Unbuntu Release 8.10
Linux Kernel 2.6.27-11
GNOME 2.24.1

Launch VLC to play a wmv movie, then pause it. VLC continues to suck up
so many cpu cycles that the power manager is tricked into believing the
the system is not idle and does not perform as expected.

[Bug 487318] [NEW] Problems mounting second or third SATA hard drive 2009-11-23

2009-11-23 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devicekit-disks

Triple boot system (XP, 9.10-rtm, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first SATA
drive
9.04-rtm recognizes second and third SATA drives, displays proper label for
each and allows me to mount following authorization.  This problem did not
manifest in 8.10 or 9.04.  However, it is very obvious in 9.10 Betas and rtm.

9.10-rtm incorrectly displays drive size and the fact that it contains
and extended partition as the label. Something like 620 GB Extended.  A
time-out error occurs a short while after authorization has been
completed. karmic-desktop-i386 2009-10-20_2325.iso was downloaded using
9.04. Unetbootin was used on 9.04 to create an installation USB.

All three SATA drives are attached to the same controller.  All three drives
function properly under 9.04-rtm.
Only the first SATA drive functions properly under 9.10-rtm.  Someone had to be
exhausted for this to be overlooked in a sanity check.

The partition used for the 9.10-rtm install was formatted as Ext3 during the
installation.  The failure, which is 100% repeatable, occurred following the
initial install and also after completion of the update process earlier this
evening.
Also, the Removable Media menu entry disappears following the upgrade from the
initial install and all partitions are listed under places.

FYI also reproduced this problem via Kernel Linux 2.6.31-15-generic-pae
GNOME 2.28.1

[Bug 487318] Re: Problems mounting second or third SATA hard drive 2009-11-23

2009-11-24 Thread Ernie 07
Although I have 3 SATA drives which are attached to the same controller,
the third is in a separate drive enclosure and may have been powered
down when I reported this bug. The problem with the third drive was
included because a bug had been reported in 8.04, I think, that affected
ONLY the second drive and I wanted to indicate that this problem affects
any physical drive except the first one on this controller.

It is highly unlikely that this is a hardware/BIOS issue because all of
my drives work correctly when I boot 9.04 which is also located on the
first drive.

If I need to change the title or anything else in this report to
facilitate getting the problem resolved, please indicate what I should
do.

third SATA hard drives which are attached to the same controller has been
resolved via the following procedure:

1.Remove all partitions from the first SATA drive.
2.Set BIOS to Enhanced IDE.
3.Install XP-sp2. The install procedure will blue screen if it discovers that
AHCI mode was enabled, so IDE mode was required to get past that Microshaft
foolishness.
4.Set BIOS to AHCI to allow the controller to do what it was designed to do.
5.Using XP, delete all logical drives from the extended partition on the second
SATA drive.
6.Using XP, delete the extended partition on the second SATA drive.
7.Using XP, create an extended partition on the second SATA drive.
8.Using XP, create a logical drive on the extended partition on the second SATA
hard drive.
9.Using XP, format that logical drive. I chose 16k but cluster size should not
be important, the default for NTFS could have been used.
10.Restore data to the logical drive from where it was backed up.
11.Repeat the steps used on the second SATA hard drive on the third SATA hard
drive.
12.Navigate to Places and Removable Media in Ubuntu 9.10
13.Observe the Labels on the second and third SATA drives assigned by the
format process.
14.Provide credentials and access each of those drives.

Apparently the NTFS processing in 9.10 is more thorough concerning the
Microshaft NTFS specification than XP-sp2.

Please mark this bug report closed. XP-sp2 improperly created/formatted
the sole logical drive in the extended partition of each of the suspect
SATA hard drives.

[Bug 481013] [NEW] NVIDIA 9500gt - Ubuntu 9.10 Screensaver Fails to Activate 2009-11-11

2009-11-11 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Triple boot system (XP, 9.10-rtm, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first SATA
drive.
NVIDIA 9500gt video card.
Screensaver fails to activate although test modes operate correctly.
Either Suspend and Hibenate can each be successfully executed via the panel
menu which suggests that the environment can execute either.
This could be caused by a problem with the video card, it's driver or the OS.
I don't have an environment in which I can easily make that determination.

[Bug 481013] Re: NVIDIA 9500gt - Ubuntu 9.10 Screensaver Fails to Activate 2009-11-11

2009-11-12 Thread Ernie 07
After a reboot, the screensaver did activate.

However, the LCD display did not appear to fully turn off when it should have.
I expected it to enter the no-signal low power state where the power light
would turn amber.

It never reached this state although it did go blank.
In addition, 9.10 was never put to sleep.

I was able to see the failures to turn the LCD display off properly
followed by failure to sleep, by waiting the indicated times (3min for
screensaver, 5min for turn off of LCD display and 10min more for OS
sleep) after logging on.

Nvidia 9500gt card will NOT function properly with generic Ubuntu
drivers.

Having been spoiled because Ubuntu has done such a great job with
hardware interaction, I failed to notice that this problem was
associated with use of generic drivers.

Executed a clean reinstall of 9.10
Upgraded to Kernel 2.6.31-15 (default upgrade) 2009-11-15
Installed recommended Nvidia driver (185)

Executed gconf-editor via Alt+F2
Changed apps gnome-power-manager actions sleep_type_ac from suspend to hibernate

Screensaver, suspend and hibernate each function correctly on my desktop
computer.

[Bug 355996] Re: Power Management FAILS most of the time

2010-04-13 Thread Ernie 07
This is still and issue with 9.10 and 10.04 b2 (lucid-
desktop-i386_2010-04-12_0812). The screensaver should care about USER
inactivity while powersave should also be concerned with system
activity.

A diff of two hard drives that contain more than 200 GBs each will take
quite some time. Powersave should not kick in during this process but
the screensaver should work as configured by the user. This will
require two separate notions of inactivity, one for the screensaver only
and one for both powersave and the screensaver.

Shutdown, NOT suspend should be the default action when the power button
is pushed. There are many cases when a hung system can only be
addressed by removing power or forcing a shutdown. Shutting a hung
system via the power button will do less harm that simpply removing
power.

Finally, hibernate and NOT suspend should be the powersave default
because data will be lost during suspend if power is lost.

[Bug 562743] [NEW] Return From Hibernate Problem

2010-04-13 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Left-click on power icon and select Hibernate.
Respond to confirmation prompt.
After PC powers down, turn power on.
No indication of returning from hibernation, just a blinking cursor that can be
moved down a line via the enter key.
Following full return from hibernation, the screensaver will be active.
UNFORTUNATELY, the default screensaver is a blank screen which would lead a
casual observer to believe that the system is DEAD.
Changing the default screensaver to GLText would solve this problem.

[Bug 477425] [NEW] Problems mounting second or third SATA hard drive

2009-11-07 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Triple boot system (XP, 9.10-rtm, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first SATA
drive
9.04-rtm recognizes second and third SATA drives, displays proper label for
each and allows me to mount following authorization. This problem did not
manifest in 8.10 or 9.04. However, it is very obvious in 9.10 Betas and rtm.

9.10-rtm incorrectly displays drive size and the fact that it contains and
extended partition as the label. Something like 620 GB Extended. A time-out
error occurs a short while after authorization has been completed.
karmic-desktop-i386 2009-10-20_2325.iso was downloaded using 9.04. Unetbootin
was used on 9.04 to create an installation USB.

[Bug 477425] Re: Problems mounting second or third SATA hard drive

2009-11-07 Thread Ernie 07
After executing the try Ubuntu-9.10 option from the LiveCD, I cannot
access a second or third SATA drive. Symptoms seem identical to those
described above. Functionality that worked correctly in 8.10 and 9.04
got broken in 9.10.

[Bug 477789] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 Firefox HANGS!

2009-11-07 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

This failure can occur if Firefox has windows open, even if the user is
not directly interacting with any of them. One failure occurred while
interacting with Places, but it usually occurs during interaction with a
Firefox window. This failure has not occurred when only a single
Firefox window is open.

In 9.04, this could happen a few times a month. In 9.10, this failure
seems to occur several times in a given week. When this failure occurs,
power cycling or use of Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will be required to reset the
system. Unfortunately, power cycling is sometimes the only way to reset
the system when this failure occurs.

My shared (XP/Ubuntu) data partition is formatted NTFS. That partition
was trashed when this failure occurred before I had configured the
X-window restart key sequence because a large 4GB file transfer was
interrupted by power cycling. However, that data partition would
probably have been trashed had it been formatted Ext3.

Lesson learned. Execute large file transfers using XP until this
failure gets corrected.

[Bug 482835] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 P5Q-E Sata300 Tx4 AHCI Return From Hibernation Problem 2009-11-14

2009-11-14 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Triple boot desktop system (XP, 9.10-rtm, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first
SATA drive.
Ubuntu 9.10 was installed via LiveCD with BIOS set to AHCI.
Hibernate 9.10 via menu option then wait for power-down.
Push power button.
During power-up, observe message concerning waking up.
A short while later, this screen will be redisplayed and then the computer will
freeze requiring a power-cycle to get it going.
It appears that after this power-cycle, a cold rather than a
return-from-hibernation restart was executed and the condition of the system
prior to hibernation was not restored.

Suspend and Hibernation will each function correctly when executed from
the menu in 9.04, which was installed with BIOS set to Enhanced IDE
although the BIOS was set to AHCI when I last tested those functions and
observed correct operation.

[Bug 460201] [NEW] cannot mount second or third SATA hard drive

2009-10-24 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Triple boot system (XP, 9.10-Beta, 9.04-rtm) all contained on the first SATA
drive
9.04-rtm recognizes second and third SATA drives, displays proper label for
each and allows me to mount following authorization.
9.10-Beta incorrectly displays drive size and the fact that it contains and
extended partition as the label. Something like 620 GB Extended. A time-out
error occurs a short while after authorization has been completed.
karmic-desktop-i386 2009-10-20_2325.iso was downloaded using 9.04. Unetbootin
was used on 9.04 to create an installation USB.
All three SATA drives are attached to the same controller. All three drives
function properly under 9.04-rtm.
Only the first SATA drive functions properly under 9.10-Beta. Someone had to
be exhausted for this to be overlooked in a sanity check.
The partition used for the 9.10-Beta install was formatted as Ext3 during the
installation. The failure occurred following the initial install and also
after completion of the update process earlier this evening.

2009-10-30 Thread Ernie 07
Shades of VISTA! After executing the try Ubuntu-9.10 option from the
LiveCD, I cannot access a second or third SATA drive. This VISTA-like
quality could do a lot to alienate someone who tries to install 9.10 on
a second hard drive. Looks like I will have to hang onto 9.04 for a
while.

2013-09-03 Thread Ernie 07
Please re-open this bug. I tested using a recent 13.10 and file-roller
3.9.90 and observed that extract here fails to delay directory restore
causing EVERY non-empty extracted folder to assume the date/time of
extraction.

I will attempt to attach a screenshot of the relevant portion of the
GNOME file-roller 3.8.4 change log and a screenshot of a terminal window
indicating stats on the OS in use, an ls -al of the iso used to install
the OS and the current file-roller version.

Another data point.

In addition to failing via the right click extract here menu, the CLI

[Bug 1133107] Re: Hidden Microsoft ULA when installing Ubuntu Restricted Extras

BROKEN in 64-bit 1310 3.11.0-5-generic #11-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 6
19:01:31 UTC 2013

Question mark is displayed in the launcher but the installation
"appears" to be hung.

Someone unfamiliar with Unity might miss the question mark due to the ABUNDANCE
of clutter.
EVERY partition on the drive containing the OS is locked to the launcher with
no way to turn that behavior off.
What Ph.D on his FIRST work assignment designed that behavior?

[Bug 1298188] [NEW] Software Center KAPUT on or about 2014-03_12

2014-03-26 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

Software Center correctly installed the following programs when executed
following the 64-bit 2014-03_11.iso Desktop Installation
(3.13.0-16-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 4 23:02:40 UTC 2014):

1. Ubuntu Restricted Extras
2. Google Chrome Debian install
3. GParted
4. VLC
5. Unetbootin

Software Center will hang if the first program installed is Ubuntu
Restricted Extras. This bug manifests in every install after 2014-03_11
that I tested including the 2014-03_25 iso.

Software Center will fail with a Package operation failed error when a
Google Chorme Debian install is attempted. After that an attempt to
install Ubuntu Restricted Extras or GParted would fail with the same
error. Note, if the first program installed was GParted rather than
Google Chrome or Unbuntu Restricted Extras, the GParted installation
would be successful.

Knowing the approximate date that the failure was introduced should
help. Also, I am somewhat concerned that usability regression testing
may not catch this because the problem manifests differently depending
upon which program is installed first.

Finally, if I install from 2014-03-11 and then update to
(3.13.0-19-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 24 02:36:06 UTC 2014) the
failures described above will occur.

[Bug 1299749] [NEW] E4defrag fails to restore parent directory timestamp after defragmenting a file in that directory

2014-03-30 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

The effect of this bug is quite similar to the one the was reported via
bug 1133663 ”Extract Here fails to preserve timestamps for non-empty
folders”. Directions to reproduce follow:

1. Create a tar.bz2 archive of a directory containing a fragmented file. One
such file might be the 64-bit debian download of google-chrome-stable.
2. Extract that archive to a temporary location that is not on the same
partition.
3. Consume some time, a few minutes will do.
4. E4defrag the partition.
5. Observe that the directory timestamp indicates the time that the file was
defragmented. The original timestamp was not restored.

The --delay-directory-restore flag got the job done for Extract Here.
Might there be something similar for e4defrag?

[Bug 1299935] [NEW] Login screen fails to adhere to (System Settings) Brightness & Lock configuration

2014-03-30 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

The Login screen will be displayed and the screen will never go blank
under any of the following conditions:

1. Following a cold (power on) boot.
2. Following a warm (restart) boot.
3. Following detection of mouse movement or keyboard input when the screen was
locked.

This problem can be reproduced 100% of the time using an installation
the 64-bit iso (2014-03_11 07:51) updated to 3.13.0-20-generic
#42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 28 09:56:33 UTC 2014.

The first two conditions are not new but the third appears to have been
introduced when the unlock dialogue was replaced with the Login screen.

2013-09-02 Thread Ernie 07
Is it too early in the development cycle to expect to be able to execute
an installation without experiencing errors?

How can a Beta be released in a few days when I get this error at the
beginning of a USB install of the amd 64-bit desktop timestamped
2013-09-02 08:17?

1. I could NOT get the CD creator in 13.04 to complete without throwing
an error, so I used 12.04.3 to reformat the usb and change it into a
bootable device using the iso mentioned above.

2. Booted

3. Selected install Ubuntu

3. Checked the two boxes then OK

4. Waited a short while was greeted with this message

[Bug 1290228] Re: (14.04) Unable to install external deb packages "Package operation Failed"

2014-04-03 Thread Ernie 07
Just a little addition for Comment #21

If you intend to use the Software Center to install "GDebi Package
Installer", do it BEFORE attempting to install "Ubuntu Restricted
Extras" via the Software Center. Once you enter the failed state
associated with "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" installation, you are toast.

If you have spent any time in the windoze world, you would have created
an image before trying to install something; restored the working image
if/when the installation failed; and then experimented to find a work
around. Being more robust, Linux does not warrant those extra steps when
dealing with open source. However when dealing with proprietary software
one must expect the occasional "vista" experience.

[Bug 1290236] [NEW] ubiquity gpt ext4 format error

2014-03-10 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

1. Create an ext4 partition on a GPT disk using gparted (v16 or v18) but do
not format it
2. Install 64-bit Ubuntu-14.04 desktop via 2014-03_09 07:49 iso from a USB
stick checking the format box
3. Back up the newly created installation using Acronis True Home build 6673
4. Observe that sector-by-sector mode was forced because the ext4 partition
was not recognized as such
5. Create a second ext4 partition and format that partition using gparted
(v18)
6. Install 64-bit Ubuntu-14.04 desktop via 2014-03_09 07:49 iso from a USB
stick leaving the format box unchecked
7. Back up the newly created installation using Acronis True Home build 6673
8. Observe that normal compression was applied resulting in a much smaller
image because the ext4 partition was recognized as such

It is my opinion that incorrect formatting might lead to manifestation of some
nasty intermittent bugs. Hopefully these steps which are 100% reproducible will
enable the bug to be located quickly.

[Bug 1290236] Re: ubiquity gpt ext4 format error

2014-03-10 Thread Ernie 07
My concern was raised because Acronis True Image only exhibited the
forced sector-by-sector behavior after 14.04 had been installed in a
target partition that had been formatted by Ubiquity during the
installation. If the target partition had been formatted by gparted v18
prior to the 14.04 installation, Acronis would have created a compressed
image just as it would with an install of 13.10.

Why does pre-formatting with gparted cause a different result than
formatting during installation?

A non-technical person managed to cause a system to crash a few minutes
after she entered a certain sequence of keystrokes on a terminal that
was NOT logged on. The programmer failed to flush the buffer and
accepted contamination as well as logon commands. So I have attempted to
use her non-technical methods to work around this problem.

Click on the word Guest.
Click on your user name.
Right click and select "select all"
Put the mouse pointer over the text box then press backspace.

Now you should be able to enter your password.

[Bug 1292099] Re: Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 will not install Google Chrome through Ubuntu Software Center

I am experiencing the same failure. The 64-bit deb file that I downloaded

It installed correctly following installation of the 64-bit daily build iso
(2014-03_12 07:50) but failed using daily build (2014-03_13 07:46).

Since the installation worked perfectly yesterday, might an unintended

When I can reboot into a different copy of 14.04, I will follow the
instructions again. The string portion of the instructions can also be
found under the Other Software tab of Software & Updates in a version of
14.04 prior to the one built from the 2014-03_13 iso.

I copied, pasted and chrome installed correctly. The lines are longer
than the size of the display box so I had to carefully copy.

[Bug 1293770] [NEW] Ubuntu Restricted Extras Installation Hangs in Ubuntu14.04

2014-03-17 Thread Ernie 07
Public bug reported:

64-bit 14.04 iso (2014-03_17_07:46)

1. Launch Software Center.
2. Select Ubuntu Restricted Extras, begin install, supply credentials.

3. In the past, the installation would appear to hang while actually
waiting for user response to a Eula dialog that was not visible. If the
launcher was not extremely cluttered by the HUGE number of partitions
locked to it, a Question mark icon would appear in the launcher which
could be clicked to make the Eula dialog visible.

4. Now the installation hangs but the Question mark icon never appears.
5. After killing the software-center process and then launching the Software
Center, I was able to successfully install Gparted which leads me to point
the finger at Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

I believe that this bug got introduced/uncovered after 64-bit 14.04 iso
(2014-03_12) and may be related the bug where Google-chrome-stable
cannot be installed via the Software Center although the same version
can be installed via PPA.

** Affects: software-center (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages (nvidia driver install fails to get matching header)

2013-01-10 Thread Ernie 07
Nvidia can't/won't release drivers that will work with Ubuntu. Now What?

1. Deny that a problem exists.
2. Wait until Nvidia gets it act together, perhaps during this decade.
3. Massage Ubuntu to compensate for POORLY tested Nvidia products.

1. Launch Screenshot

3. After Save Screenshot dialog appears, start typing.

The input text box does not have the focus and ignores user input until
after the text box is MANUALLY selected.
