I have the same problem. Same errors. It seems to go away when I remove
the backports-modules package. When I googled, it saw that Ubuntu isn't
the only distribution that has this problem. A fix was sent upstream,
and is present in the latest compat-wireless.

I will try to build the new compat-wireless and see if it fixes things
when I have some spare time.

This bug is still present in Gutsy, upgraded just a few hours ago. I
also tried Fedora Cora which has the all new singing and dancing 0.7
version, but the ppp support in there I need to connect through rfcomm
and bluetooth still is lacking.

Nice that I now can set up a PPP dialup in network-manager, but it
still does not "see" the connection.

I found something interesting that might help resolve this. I was
updating my karmic on my T5810, and AIGLX somehow broke. So it came up
without any hardware 3d acceleration at all, but the brightness applet
and keys worked!
