[Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-06-30 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Don't worry about the description and the tags, you as the reporter
don't have to do anything (and shouldn't do anything). Tell you the
truth, your report is invalid (not a bug, just user problem) and I
should have closed it, but I'll keep it open till your problem is
resolved, just to make sure...

Now, when you join a domain, your node name changes from to
., so as long as it's next to 127.0.0.1 it should still
work...

I tried it on my machine (i'm not normally part of any domain, so just
added a random 'testdomain'): now in /etc/hosts I have
.testdomain... Now when doing 'sudo aptitude update' I get an
error "unable to resolve host ..." but it still works fine...

The type of your connections does not really matter...

[Bug 244598] Re: won't purge deinstalled packages

2008-07-01 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Yes, it's the expected behaviour... You can also remove them by running:
dpkg --purge `dpkg --get-selections | grep deinstall | cut -f1`
as proposed here:
http://blog.moybella.net/2007/09/05/cleaning-up-after-aptget-remove/

Apart from the above, I agree with you that purge should remove the
configuration files of a previously removed package...

[Bug 240154] Re: Won't run but apt-get does

2008-07-01 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
When you say "synaptic won't run" what exactly do you mean? do you get
some "unable to resolve host" message, or does it not run at all? Both
synaptic and update-manager should ask for your password, so it's
strange that you get to enter the password only when running update-
manager... When you run synaptic package manager from the menu, do you
get a message "starting without administrative privileges"?

[Bug 261430] Re: [eeepc,intrepid ibex] Some BUGS hope it helps

2008-08-26 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Not sure if this helps resolve some of the above:
1) for the boot time, while it obviously also depends on the hardware's speed,
I am running hardy on the eee with a custom kernel, and disabling IDE support
(thus forcing it to use the SATA controller) greatly increased the speed of all
disk access)
2) for the video image, have you checked if the built-in webcam works at all?
it should be using the uvcvideo module... try installing and running ucview, i
found that camorama cannot see the camera no matter what
3) compiz was a problem also on hardy, i disabled it (but maybe compiz on a
subnotebook is overkill anyway?)
4) on shutting down, the issue is with pulseaudio if i remember correctly...
5) for wireless, i had to compile madwifi from source...

[Bug 261430] Re: [eeepc,intrepid ibex] Some BUGS hope it helps

2008-08-26 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Ok, there's two dimensions to this bug report:
1) I can help you sort out the problems you have manually
2) Making Interpid stable work out of the box on the Eee

For 1), take a look here: http://azitech.wordpress.com/eeepc/, I've
documented what I've done (in order to be able to replicate it). Mainly
you need to read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Fixes

For 2), whatever is included in 1) should be incorporated into 8.10...

[Bug 293023] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 booting hangs for a while on "configuring network interfaces" on iwl3945 and iwl4965

2008-12-05 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Manolo, dmesg messages are asynchronous, so not a good measure to judge boot
time delays.
I would suggest installing bootchart, rebooting and then looking at the graphs
in /var/log/bootchart

For now I would suggest changing the value of timeout to something lower
(maybe 5 or 10). The next version of Ubuntu (9.04, coming out in April),
as well as the general direction of Linux kernel development, is to
speed up boot time. So just wait for the next release to come out, I
believe it will provide a more permanent fix to this (and other) boot
speed issues.

** Description changed:

  It seems to bring up the interface successfully, then freeze for a while
  and start over. This happens both on intel 3945 and 4965 chipsets.
+
+ The source of the problem is the value of timeout in
+ /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf. Changing it (from the original 60) to 5 or 10
+ decreases the freeze time.

because of that "hanging" for a while at boot time. Asus Laptop F3Ja. I'll
attach the output of "uname -a", "dmesg", "lsmod" and "lspic".
  Thanks for your attention.

[Bug 272744] Re: Intrepid: Wireless card shows up as eth1

2008-11-18 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
sorry to intervene so late in the discussion. my 70-persistent-net.rules reads:
# This file maintains persistent names for network interfaces.
# See udev(7) for syntax.
#
# Entries are automatically added by the 75-persistent-net-generator.rules
# file; however you are also free to add your own entries.

# PCI device 0x11ab:0x4363 (sky2)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:17:42:74:1a:73", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

# PCI device 0x8086:0x4222 (iwl3945)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:1c:bf:54:63:d7", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="wlan*",
NAME="wlan0"

i have never edited this file. so a) i get wlan0, not eth1 and b) it seems to
be generated by 75-persistent-net-generator.rules, although i don't see how...
