[Bug 251754] Re: kernel panic on suspend, hibernate

Ryan,
does yours look like mine? I put one up the other day when I filed a bug which
was later marked a duplicate of this one:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16299856/DSCF4004.JPG
If it's of use to the devs, maybe you could achieve a better quality.

[Bug 251767] [NEW] removal of iwl3945 causes kernel oops since upgrade to version 2.6.24.20.22

2008-07-25 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Public bug reported:

After today's installation of linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-20-generic,
`rmmod iwl3945` causes a kernel oops. This effectively prevents
hibernating the laptop. Please find a screenshot attached to this post.

Warning: If you are running the kernel version 2.6.24-20 This will likely crash
your computer, requiring you to reboot it. Might cause loss of data.
Steps to reproduce:
Execute `sudo rmmod iwl3945` or try hibernating your laptop.

Other people are likely affected as well, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/176090/comments/112

Using Ubuntu 8.04.1 with the latest updates available.
Expected behaviour: Removal of module iwl3945 / Laptop goes to hibernate.
Actual behaviour: System crashes; requires reboot.

[Bug 237471] Re: no virtualbox-ose-modules package for latest kernel (2.6.24-18)

2008-06-05 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Kevin,
thanks for your comment. However, for some people this might not be acceptable
as they'd have to use an old kernel.

Note: For those of you who do not want to go through the following
steps, just use the attached deb-Package which is the result of the
following process.

This work-around does not rely on using outdated software:

0) Open up a command line. Don't worry, the workaround is straight forward and
doesn't require any file editing.
1) Install module-assistant. This program is used to compile kernel modules
from source code and build debian modulels. Simply do:
sudo aptitude install module-assistant
2) Tell module-assistant to build, package and install your new modules; all
done in the regular Debian way:
sudo module-assistant auto-install virtualbox-ose
This will automagically prepare everything it needs.
3) Reboot your system.
Note: If you followed Kevin's instructions above, make sure you boot the
current kernel. Obviously, this workaround works anytime they release a new
kernel without updating the virtualbox modules. Once they release updated
versions of the virtualbox modules, these will be installed during your regular
system updates.

Hope this helps.

All best,
Dan

[Bug 238019] [NEW] virtualbox-ose-modules for 2.6.24-19 missing

2008-06-06 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Public bug reported:

I just performed an upgrade of Hardy using the update-manager, which
installed the latest kernel from the Ubuntu archives: 2.6.24-19.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the matching virtualbox-ose modules. So
we need to get them uploaded to the ubuntu archives, and make
virtualbox-ose-modules-generic and so on depend on them.

For those of you who want to put some effort into a manual, yet clean
workaround:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
cd /usr/src
sudo m-a a-i virtualbox-ose
It'll do everything (prepare the system, download the sources, compile them,
package the binaries and install the package) automagically for you. The
resulting package is attached to this post.

All best,
Dan

[Bug 239585] [NEW] Shortcut to take screenshot in conflict with YouTube search

2008-06-12 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu version in use: Hardy with all updates installed as of June 12th 2008
Totem version in use: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2

What I wanted to do:
Using the search functino of the youtube plug-in, I wanted to search for a
video whose name included the capital letter "S".

What I expected to happen:
I wanted to type in the search term and I expected the typed-in letters to
appear in the search field.

What happened instead:
Whenever I type in Shift+S, I am offered a screenshot. (Shift+S is the shortcut
to take a screenshot in totem).

Steps to reproduce:
0. Start totem.
1. Enable the youtube plugin (Edit -> Plug-Ins -> Mark YouTube-Browser)
2. Press F9 to show the panel on the right edge of the window.
3. Select "YouTube" from the drop down menu.
4. Activate the search term field by left-clicking into it.
5. Type something, including Shift+S.

Workaround: The search does not appear to be case-sensitive, so we can
substitute the capital "S" with "s" for now.
Proposed solution: Re-Assign a new shortcut to the screenshot function.

[Bug 25931] Fix not working.

2008-04-26 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Hi everybody,

upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. If I set concurrency to "shell", I still
get that error message. Reverting concurrency back to "none" is a
workaround, but not a solution for me. I assume my symlinks are the
Hardy default ones:

~$ ls -1 /etc/rc?.d/*dbus
/etc/rc1.d/K88dbus
/etc/rc2.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc3.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc4.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc5.d/S12dbus

So, contrary to Bruce's experience, the final Hardy release did not solve this
problem.
FYI, I'm running 2.6.24-16-generic

update-rc.d hal start 24 2 3 4 5 . stop 16 1 .
which resulted in hal's priorities being deferred to S24. Everything's running
smooth now.
Looking at hal's postinst script, I'm wondering why we don't invoke update-rc.d
regardless of the hal version? Just to be on the safe side...
Glad we got this one squashed though :)

And, just for the records:
@Martin: Nope, haven't used Automatix.
@Bruce: Thanks for your comment, but my Inspiron 6400n (aka e1505) came
pre-installed with Ubuntu, all of its components are supported by Ubuntu and I
don't have any peripheral devices attached to it.

[Bug 160589] pressing escape causes print dialog to print

2007-11-06 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Steps to reproduce:

0. Ensure printer is connected and working
1. Open PDF in evince
2. File -> print
3. Press escape

Expected result: print dialog closes, printer stays silent

Actual result: print dialog closes, printer prints document
This is counter-intuitive.

Note: This bug has been filed before, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/159384 (though not as an evince-
related bug).

[Bug 120610] eclipse-package misses org.eclipse.jdt.apt.core

2007-06-15 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eclipse

Dear all,

evidently, the Eclipse package in Ubuntu's repositories has been
stripped somewhat as compared to the upstream version. One of the
essential packages that's missing now is org.eclipse.jdt.apt.core,
without which the Hibernate Tools won't run -- see also
http://forum.hibernate.org/viewtopic.php?p=2352618

Thanks in advance,
dan

[Bug 85739] Re: [apport] sbackupd crashed with KeyError in btree_r_add()

2007-06-09 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Hey all,
What's the current state of this issue?
Can we expect any progress regarding this bug anytime soon?
I kinda rely on my backup solutions to work... Suggestions for alternative
backup solutions (as in, equally easy to use, but more reliable than the
current release of sbackup) will be gladly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

[Bug 66832] Re: Playing MP3 file over SaMBa crashes xine

2007-04-30 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Confirmed on Feisty, no cyrillic characters involved either.
In my humble opinion, this is a show stopper... Feisty is such a great
distribution, but this one keeps me from introducing it to my non-techie
friends & family. Let's give it a high priority.

[Bug 32436] Re: xine-based apps crash when trying to play .mp3 or .wav from a Samba share

2007-04-30 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
If this is a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xine-lib/+bug/66832
then we should consider reassigning this bug to somebody else than the
Kubuntu-team, because
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xine-lib/+bug/66832
definitely affects Ubuntu as well (using totem-xine).

Thanks,
Dan

[Bug 61746] Re: Xorg exits when it receives an ACPI button/lid event

2007-04-30 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Luckily this is fixed in Feisty.
Still, it's awkward to see such an important bug not getting fixed for 2 (?)
major releases of Ubuntu.

Let's hope our production machines won't need to go through such a
nightmare ever again ;-)

All best,
Dan

[Bug 61746] Re: Xorg exits when it receives an ACPI button/lid event

2007-04-05 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Hey y'all,

don't have the time & ressources to follow the above workflow right now,
but as I do depend on my notebook computer, I rebuilt a patched package
of the updated version. Thought I might as well share it with the rest
of you...

For your information:
+ `dch' -i was used
+ debian/patches was used (never done it before)
+ it works for me
- due to lack of time, this package hasn't undergone intensive testing yet.

As always, feedback will be appreciated.

[Bug 61746] Re: Xorg exits when it receives an ACPI button/lid event

2007-01-10 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Apparently a new version of the xserver has been released. Awkwardly
enough, it still doesn't contain the fix posted in this thread. Figuring
it's more than just me who needs a fixed package, I thought I might as
well upload the .deb Package I just built from the latest Ubuntu-sources
and the fix above.

It works for me, your mileage may vary...

I wonder why they don't include the patch -- whoever "they" may be... at
least for me a standby-incapable xserver renders my Dell C600 completely
unusable...

Nico,

thanks for pointing out this mistake. Obviously it's the wrong package :-)
You'll find the right one below.
Is there a way I can delete the one above or at least edit the respective post?

[Bug 61746] Re: Xorg exits when it receives an ACPI button/lid event

2007-02-03 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Viktor,

the reason why apt, update-manager and so on try to replace the fixed
package is that they realize that the replacement package doesn't come
from the distribution's repositories. Even worse -- if you enable the
automatic installation of security updates without your confirmation,
guess what happens... Every now and then you find yourself with a frozen
laptop, because your xserver-xorg-core got replaced without you being
aware of it :-/

Let's hope it's fixed in Feisty Fawn...
