running gstreamer-properties and setting the devices to autodetect did not help in my case. what did help was to delete the file ~/.pulse-cooke and the directory ./~pulse. after all it seems this problem was pulse related. (rhythmbox stopped working, so i really had to fix this bug. and totem works now too!) -- Volume control and sound missing from Totem.
