Public bug reported:
Dell X200 locks up if no external mouse is attached. This has been mentioned by
others in forums. It has also been mentioned for other laptops, but I have only
seen it mentioned on some Dell laptops. Happened for me with Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10,
and 9.04. It locks up randomly about every 10-20 minutes even if idle and
unattended. Only power off will get out of it, which is always a last resort.
With an external mouse attached, it never locks up, even if you leave the mouse
sit and use the touchpad. These were fresh installs and started locking up
right away. I also verified the hashes, so they were all good installs. I
finally solved the problem by going to Mandriva which does not lock up and has
been functioning flawlessly. Too bad, because I would prefer to use Ubuntu, but
I cannot tolerate the lockups and having to have an external mouse is a pain.
Lockups are critical, frustrating, and corrupt data.
Thanks
Dan
