[Bug 291723] Re: No picture from Logitech Quickcam Communicate Deluxe

2009-01-01 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
I've encountered similar results on Ubuntu and Debian as well.

>From what I can tell, this is rather a kernel issue : is works with all
versions up to 2.6.26 but v4l in 2.6.27 seem to break the way the
Logitech Quickcam is handled (maybe an API change ?).

I'll try to report to the V4L team for further debugging.

[Bug 291723] Re: No picture from Logitech Quickcam Communicate Deluxe

2009-01-04 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
This bug has been discussed in the video4linux mailing list
 back in October.
See also the bugzilla entry related to this
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11741

The reason why it worked with previous kernel is because the new gspca
driver in 2.6.27 uses v4l2 while the older out-of-tree gspca patch
worked with v4l1.

cf. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11741#c2
Also note that the Ubuntu devs are aware they need to patch all their
apps to
use libv4l to work seamlessly with cams supported by the new gspca when moving
to 2.6.27. I'm very certain they know this as I personally told their
kerneldevs this at the Plumbers conference.

Until then, to make the webcam work you'll have to prepend the LD_PRELOAD with
v4l1compat module (package libv4l-0) :

ex:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so effectv

or with mplayer :
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0
(I could make the latter work with Debian but not the latest Ubuntu/Intrepid)

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2010-02-21 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
Since it appears to be a hardware bug (Sony/Nec/Optiarc drive), there is few
things that can be done:
- change CD/DVD burner (if possible)
- upgrade your firmware of the disc
- use another type of media (not a CD-R)

Could you please report the following:

- exact name of burner (wodim -scanbus)
- type of media used

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2009-12-03 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
So it seems that the Sony/Optiarc has some problems with the alternate version
of the installer
but if it's the case, then we need to know
- what features of such players are incompatible with the alternate CD
- and what part of the installer script triggers such error (leading the user
with an unfinished installation process which is very bad and should be taken
seriously)

BTW, in my case the CD/DVD ROM player is a
"scsi 6:0:0:0: CD-ROMOptiarc DVD RW AD-7170A 1.02 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5"
(info taken from dmesg)

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2009-12-28 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
So it seems to be an hardware bug.

To confirm this hypothesis with my case, the installation disc I used was a
Verbatim CD-R on a Sony Optiarc AD-7170A with firmware version 1.02 while 1.05
is available here
http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/supportservice/downloads/archive/downloadsarchive/dvddrivesdesktoppcs/ad7170a.html
with the following from the release notes :
«Media compatibility improved»

But then, one question remains:
Why is this bug triggered only by the Alternate disc for quite some time now
and apparently Debian 5.1 DVD installation ?
(there must be some aspects of the installer that triggers the bug)
and then, could it be a way to circumvent/mitigate this bug by changing the
drive parameters with hdparm and special command to slow down speed, reset the
drive or maybe disable cache/DMA/PIO/prefetching/... ?

[Bug 1101402] Re: No support for German language gimp kubuntu 12.04 LTS

2014-10-27 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
I confirm that the gimp package in Ubuntu doesn't ship with *ANY*
localisation (it's not only a problem with German translations) while
the Debian package has it

as a consequence, in Debian there are several files in
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES :
ls -l /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31857 oct. 16 16:00
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20-libgimp.mo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 288394 sept. 21 03:28
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20.mo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5915 sept. 21 03:28
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20-python.mo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 45770 sept. 21 03:28
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20-script-fu.mo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 212059 sept. 21 03:28
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20-std-plug-ins.mo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13902 sept. 21 03:28
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gimp20-tips.mo

and this is not the case in Ubuntu

comparing both packaging (the debian/rules file), in Ubuntu there is a
"cleaning" in the common-install-impl:: part (lines 43-49) that seem to
delete all the GETTEXT_PACKAGE

conclusion: either Ubuntu should not delete the l10n files, or create some
sub-package for each languages
(gimp-l10-de gimp-l10-fr, etc.)

[Bug 1101402] Re: No support for German language gimp kubuntu 12.04 LTS

2014-10-27 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
that's right, since I'm using Kubuntu (KDE), I (wrongly) assumed that I
didn't have to install gnome package but I forgot that Gimp is using gtk
libraries

and indeed, after installing language-pack-gnome-fr it works!

as a side note, it is interesting to see the different approaches
between Debian who chooses to install all language within each package,
and Ubuntu who prefer to have all localisations/translation for all
packages but on only the desired languages

thanks

[Bug 2109975] [NEW] NetworkManager cannot work in conjonction with dhclient (isc-dhcp-client) after Plucky/25.04 upgrade

2025-05-05 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Kubuntu from Ocular (24.10) to Plucky (25.04), I could
not retrieve an IP address from my corporate network which requires the
user-class (option 77) to be set in the dhclient configuration file.

Before the upgrade I was able to get an IP address from the DHCP server
through NetworkManager that was set to use the dhclient (isc-dhcp-client
package installed) and with the following lines in the configuration

[main]
dhcp=dhclient

see
https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/configuring_and_managing_networking/configuring-
networkmanager-dhcp-settings_configuring-and-managing-
networking#proc_changing-the-dhcp-client-of-networkmanager_configuring-
networkmanager-dhcp-settings

Everything worked well up until network-manager 1.48.8-1ubuntu3 (Ocular
/ 25.10)

But with the recent upgrade to Plucky/25.10 and network-manager 1.52.0-1ubuntu1
there seems to be a regression as I cannot request an IP address anymore with
the same configuration

Here are the errors in syslog

2025-05-05T08:06:49.162450+02:00 myhost NetworkManager[1116]:
[1746425209.1623] dhcp: init: DHCP client 'dhclient' not available
2025-05-05T08:06:49.162551+02:00 myhost NetworkManager[1116]:
[1746425209.1623] dhcp: init: Using DHCP client 'internal'

and no IP address is assigned to my network card (wired)

NB: there is no IPv6 at stake, only IPv4 address is assigned

the isc-dhcp-client is in version 4.4.3-P1-4ubuntu2 since 24.04 (LTS/Noble) and
no newer version exists, so it doesn't seem to be the culprit

unfortunately, I have to still rely on ISC DHCP client as this is the only way
to configure the user-class option
here is the line I need in the /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf
send user-class "blabla-";

[Bug 2109975] Re: NetworkManager cannot work in conjonction with dhclient (isc-dhcp-client) after Plucky/25.04 upgrade

2025-05-06 Thread Cyril Chaboisseau
It appears the reason the external dhclient is no longer working is because
it's not explicitly enabled in the current build. This can be seen in the
Plucky build log
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/779900784/buildlog_ubuntu-plucky-amd64.network-manager_1.52.0-1ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz

DHCP clients (default internal):
  dhcpcd: true false
  dhclient: false (deprecated)

As noted in the NetworkManager changelog (NEWS file):

NetworkManager-1.50

Overview of changes since NetworkManager-1.48

=

* The support for "dhclient" has been deprecated, not built unless

explicitely enabled, and will be removed in a future release.

The internal DHCP client should be used instead and has been

the default since version 1.20 (1.12 when built with meson).

However, as mentioned in this bug description, the only way to use the
user-class option currently is via the ISC DHCP client (dhclient).

Until NetworkManager supports this option internally, could you consider
re-enabling dhclient in the build?

I've opened a ticket to track this request.
