[Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small
The priority shouldn't be low. I have a 1920x1200 pixel 15.4" display and the file chooser isn't too small, it's unusable. I have to change its size every time I use it. Every single time. Let me repeat this: Every single freaking time! You never knew how many file chooser dialogues you use before you get annoyed by every single one of them. [Bug 424655] Re: Pulse audio memory leak
I seem to have a milder version of this. I'll attach an htop screenshot showing pulseaudio to use about 2 gigs overall and 1 gig resident memory after about three and a half days uptime. It's usually half that much after a day I'd say, whether I use audio or not. Perhaps this is a different issue but I've found no other bug report on this so far. Is there an upstream report BTW or is this thought to be caused by Ubuntu- specific patches? I'll post the PA stats corresponding to the htop output below. I resist having run PA in valgrind for a significant amount of time as this might be required since the leak doesn't seem as large for me as for many others. [Bug 464292] [NEW] crypto disk passphrase can't be entered
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mountall I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic yesterday which made my system unbootable. I have an encrypted swap and home partition. The swap mounts just fine as an early crypto disk. For the home I get a passphrase prompt but when typing it in and pressing enter nothing happens. When I press enter a second time I get a "bad passphrase" message and a new prompt. Each time I type anything before pressing enter, the enter key just seems to be ignored, no matter how many times I try. Pressing enter without typing before works but of course to little use. I do get into the emergency shell but I can't type there either. The only thing that seems to work there is Ctrl-C. I'll attach a screen shot of how it looks. I use the non-graphic boot because Jaunty used to show my passphrase in clear text when I didn't. I'd try the graphical boot if anyone could tell me how to reactivate it in Karmic. Does this thing log to some other file than the syslog? [Bug 957843] [NEW] files in eCryptFS Private directory get corrupted
Public bug reported: I'm using a .Private directory to encrypt parts of my home directory. I'm using ext4 in my home and in my ~/Private. Some files turned became corrupted for no apparent reason in that trying to read them produced an "Input/output error" on the console and this in the syslog: Mar 17 12:08:55 Saffron kernel: [ 2427.492737] Valid eCryptfs headers not found in file header region or xattr region, inode 306879 Mar 17 12:08:55 Saffron kernel: [ 2427.492757] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO This includes some chromium files (I'll probably survive that) and some files from my PhD thesis (not funny if it happens before I can git push that stuff out of reach for ecryptfs to mess with). I found this post from 2009 (!) that matter-of-factly asserts that ecryptfs volumes corrupt files when the disk runs out of space: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs- utils/+question/60020 I did indeed once run out of disk space but there are younger corruptions. I also failed to figure out how to fsck an ecryptfs volume. I only found people asking that question with zero answers. At the current state of affairs I'm seriously considering to switch to full disk encryption and to tell everyone to stay as far away from ecryptfs as possible. If necessary, run. But maybe I'm missing something regarding the missing fsck and that file corruption bug is easily fixed. [Bug 961172] Re: sky2 draws up to 1.27W of power without a link
Luis, thanks for the hint, it never occured to me that WoL could affect a machine that is already "awake". Anyway, I did some more and more caruful measurements using powerstat and after these it seems that the problem is with powertop after all. Sorry for the mistake. When unloading the sky2 module with active network otherwise (i.e. wifi), there is actually no change in power usage at all! When reloading the sky2 module it doesn't even appear in powertop. When activating networking again in network-manager (God knows what that does exactly), it reappears as power hog. However, measuring again, there is only a minimal increase in actual power usage as reported by the battery (about .13W with the standard deviation of the measurements being higher than that). So I guess what I saw in the first place was other networking stuff or just fluctuations. Sorry again for doing the appropriate measurements *after* filing the report. I'm moving this to the powertop package as the problem seems to be in the estimates alone. Bringing up an actual link BTW will make powertop show 6W or so for the device although the overall system usage is only 9W (from 7 before the link). ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => powertop (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/961172 Title: sky2 draws up to 1.27W of power without a link To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powertop/+bug/961172/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok, good to know. Well, after you had mentioned it, I checked it anyway but there doesn't even seem to be a BIOS option for WoL on my netbook. [Bug 957843] Re: files in eCryptFS Private directory get corrupted
You should definitely use LUKS instead of ecryptfs, Alan. There is no indication that this bug got fixed or even looked into since it has been reported. If by "cause" you mean what triggers this bug: when the FS containing the ecryptfs files runs out of space, files in the ecryptfs volume get corrupted. That much for the other spin I guess: https://support.ntp.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=802 The upstream bug is set to "wontfix" with the primary reason being ignorance if I may say so. They don't see the problem. It's just once per second and mostly we don't even do anything! Read the thread, people tried to explain again and again. It looks hopeless to me, really. This is the Debian response: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-ntp-maintainers/2011-January/002731.html It's basically: "If upstream won't include the patch, it's probably garbage." [Bug 949221] [NEW] powertop incorrectly reports multiple display brightness devices to use power
Public bug reported: I am running PowerTOP 1.97 beta 1 on Lubuntu Precise. There are three reported devices called "Display backlight" on my Samsung N220 with a Pixel Qi display. I made a couple of measurements to figure out what these devices might be: Power est.Usage Device name pt_bright 1.13 W100.0%Display backlight 1.13 W100.0%Display backlight 183 mW 28.6%Display backlight pt_dark 1.13 W100.0%Display backlight 220 mW 28.6%Display backlight 220 mW 0.0%Display backlight pt_off 1.15 W100.0%Display backlight 1.15 W100.0%Display backlight 212 mW 28.6%Display backlight pt_off2 1.14 W100.0%Display backlight 211 mW 28.6%Display backlight 211 mW 0.0%Display backlight pt_displayoff 0 mW100.0%Display backlight 0 mW 28.6%Display backlight 0 mW 0.0%Display backlight bright is taken with 100% display brightness, dark with the minimum the brightness keys in Lubuntu can do (0d according to setpci on its 00-ff scale). off is measured with the backlight completely off, set with setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00; off2 is a second measurement under the same conditions. displayoff was done with xset dpms force off. So it appears to me that the first "Display backlight" is the display itself, the last one is the actual display backlight, although is still consumes 0,2W even when switched off. The second device seems to behave totally erratic, showing the measurement of one of the other two devices at random. This doesn't completely hold true when running with AC power but then there seem to be so many other issues that it almost doesn't seem worth mentioning. I couldn't figure out any such pattern for the usage percentage though. Any help on how to dig deeper into this is appreciated. Also, any hints how to really switch off the backlight would be great. Other than that, powertop should show only existing devices and name them correctly. One small addendum: just saw that the second device actually sometimes shows a different measurement. Something like 1.17W say when the first device is 1.25.
