*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1571865 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1571865

I suggest to simply ignore the unknown variables and throw a warning instead of
blocking mysql server to start... This "feature" broke beyond repair my OTRS
installation that was happening during the same release upgrade... because the
message complaining about upgrading did not give any hint that mysql server was
stopped!
Result: more than 1 million tickets gone... I had to reinstall OTRS from
scratch... but I still lost about 800 open tickets.
No blame, of course... but if mysql-server had just ignored the unsupported
variable instead of dying it would have made my life a lot easier...

[Bug 1571865] Re: mysql fails to start after upgrade if previous defaults were customised

2016-10-10 Thread Christian Deligant
Why couldn't mysql-server just throw a warning on an unknown variable and start
with a default?
Especially during a release update, mysql is critical when many packages rely
on a DB-based content to upgrade themselves (Mediawiki, otrs, etc)

[Bug 1571865] Re: mysql fails to start after upgrade if previous defaults were customised

2016-10-11 Thread Christian Deligant
I understand your concern.

My installation had a separate cnf file in the conf.d directory with a
couple of personal settings affecting the mysqld, among them the old
slow-query variables.

This was done in order to have the my.cnf upgrade smoothly among time.

What happened is that mysql-server did not restart, probably throwing a
complain but without stopping (and upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04 means
2900 MB of stuff to download, running on an SSD you really don't even
notice what is passing on the screen!), the other packages complaining
about not being able to connect to the socket... not exactly a good hint
about the server being off. Only at the very end installation ended up
with 2 packages misconfigured...

I suggest instead of that behaviour to hang the upgrade in case mysql-
server is not restarting with a notification showing the offending
settings in order for the sysadmin to understand what is going wrong and
act before going on.

Hope this suggestion will be accepted

[Bug 1571865] Re: mysql fails to start after upgrade if previous defaults were customised

2016-10-11 Thread Christian Deligant
@Robie Basak
The main problem is that all the packages that rely on an active mysql-server
to upgrade themselves will stop and ask what to do, thus you anyway need to
babysit them :)

At this point, having the upgrade of Mysql-Server stopping if it was on
and could not restart will only stop the upgrade once.

I don't think a release upgrade has to be done unattended...

When I close the lid of my laptop everything seems to be fine on the

[Bug 1397687] [NEW] dbcheck (bacula 5.2.6) still broken in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2014-11-30 Thread Christian Deligant
Public bug reported:

dbcheck is part of the bacula project. It is broken as the version packaged in
Ubuntu 14.04 is still the 5.2.6, while the fixed program is in 5.2.10, released
back in June 2012 but still not in Ubuntu.
This is extremely annoying as it breaks even a vanilla install of a mysql-based
bacula when it comes to backup the catalogs.

The 5.2 branch is at version 5.2.13 since 2013-02-20.

Hope at least the 5.2.10 fixes will be inserted in one of the next
updates of Ubuntu.

Thank you for what you are doing.
