[Bug 246099] Re: Screen corruption while scrolling gnome-system-monitor process list

2008-08-26 Thread Chauncellor
I believe it is NVidia drivers - Once I upgraded from Onboard to a
Geforce, the corruption started. Beforehand, it was fine.

Also, my old Dell laptop (equipped with a Geforce Go) had the same
problems once upgraded to Hardy (but worked fine under Gutsy)

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-06-02 Thread Chauncellor
braddock speaks the truth in my head. Windows is the victim of a swamped
up notification area, not Ubuntu. Look at any Windows machine I have
touched, and you'll find "msconfig" in the last RUN box entry because
I'm constantly battling all those damned startup applications that just
clog, clog, clog Windows.

Under Ubuntu, the ONLY program I have ever had to disable on startup is
Empathy. And I think they fixed that in the newest versions. My
notification area is clean, and I use it a lot. My Ubuntu machine has
been connectionless for three weeks now, and I have a warning icon in
the tray telling me that my sources are outdated. I, being as anal as
anyone when it comes to the notification try in Windows, DO NOT CARE
ABOUT IT! It does not clog up my area! I constantly send my audio tools
to the tray with alltray, and even with all those, at the max I'll have
maybe five or six items! That's not clogged, that's _what the tray is
for_.

This is an excursion that Microsoft should be looking into, not
Canonical. It's wasting resources that could be better used elsewhere.
Want to clean up a swamp? Clean up the Preferences/Adminstration folders
- Fedora did that years ago. Clean up the Sound/Video section of
Applications. But the notification area is fine the way it is! Want to
know the first thing I did when I installed Jaunty? I right clicked on
the indicator-applet and selected "remove from panel". Productivity
boosted 25 percent for me when I did. I couldn't stand using the thing,
it was so useless. Again, oversimplification. Why don't we get rid of
"Window List"? All those windows we have open, surely they're swamping
up the panels We could just have the different windows focus after a
certain period of time! That would solve lots of problems, neh?

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-06-04 Thread Chauncellor
MPT: Oh, goodie! Looks like we have a winner here. I'll be voting that
idea up I hope it's implemented soon, it's exactly what I was
thinking about!

May I ask what the end result of the notification area is, then? It
seems like the goal is ultimately to completely remove the notification
area. What would you do with "dockable" programs like Thunderbird or
Pidgin, then? Where would I send them?

Also, at this point in time, it seems that you guys are set on never looking
back into putting the notifications into the notification bar. I would like to
plead on my knees that something be done with the in-your-face pop-up,
pop-under, evasive, invisible, or-whatever-is-being-boiled-next method that
ultimately invades and annoys the users and also does less of a good job of
notifying. Never have I had a window that I couldn't minimize in Ubuntu, and
I'm always thankful of that when I have to use this Windows machine to connect
to dial-up. Please, for the love of everything good and green, do not decide
that the computer knows what windows should and should not be minimized.
Vincenzo Ciancia put it well when he said "Really, I am in front
of my beloved Ubuntu but I hate a part of it."

That said, perhaps the end result of this cleaning may very well be for
the better of GNOME. I very vehemently disagree with this removal, but
perhaps there will be some better method that would be very friendly to
all. At the present, though, it's pretty much decided that it is not.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-06-14 Thread Chauncellor
I use Linux Mint Live CDs on my hard-drive-less laptop when I need a
portable computer for something with things like flash and other
proprietary things pre-installed. I've been using it in this way for
nearly a year. Just this week, though, I found out that the little Lock
in the notification area was the updates icon. I never cared what was in
the notification area because all I needed Mint for was the internet, so
I pay no mind to the system status

After realizing this, I've found out that MPT was right: I don't think
that any icon will suit the notification area for a casual user. There
is something that needs to be done. HOWEVER, I still don't agree that
the pop-up is the necessary solution.

Loïc Martin: I believe that, while it was certainly a plus for them to
clean up the notification dialogue, the end goal was to make updates
more noticeable and present for the average user that would probably
just ignore the icon in the tray. Nine out of ten Windows machines that
I fix have a "swamp" of icons in the tray, and the customers that I
handle almost always don't know what any of them do. While there is
certainly a lesser amount of icons in Ubuntu, it would still probably be
ignored just as much.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-05-04 Thread Chauncellor
MPT: Thanks for keeping me in check. I did a search through all Mark
Shuttleworth posts and notice that he did, in fact, post here quite a
bit. My apologies, I was under the impression that he only posted twice
before he changed the status.

That said, I will state that I can definitely understand the decision to
disable zapping by default for Jaunty. Though I've never had accidents,
that is something I can support even if I'd rather it not happen.
There's always the magic sysrq keys if there's an emergency and zapping
is disabled, so the backup plan is fairly good.

While I can see the motivation to take the updater out of the system
tray, I cannot understand the methodology behind the execution. The
general consensus is extremely negative to this, and I'm probably
including those that do not have a launchpad account. I have a dear old
teacher friend of mine that went insane for a while with all those popup
windows that got in her way while she was doing things. She couldn't
STAND It.

What I'm wondering is, do you think that there could be a "fix" released
so that until this project Ayatana is finished, the default intrepid
behavior is applied? I guess there's no stopping this decision for new
notifications, but I'd risk saying that nearly 90 percent or more people
don't like it. My roommate was turned off by it when I gave him Jaunty
on an external, even. I'll support Shuttleworth's ideas in the future,
but this seems to parallel the implementation of Pulseaudio in Hardy:
Well-meant, but disastrous. Thankfully, though, I only had to open
terminal once this time around.

2009-05-04 Thread Chauncellor
Yes. I remember reading Mr. Shuttleworth speaking of possibly removing
one of the two panels sometime. I'm all for simplicity, but there is
such a thing as OVER-simplicity. I believe Mac is the perfect example of
that. The OS is designed to be SO simple and SO clean that navigating it
is a huge headache. I remember before the dock existed on previous MacOS
versions and how painful it was to find one out of five windows. Now,
even with the dock I find it difficult to navigate as you can only
access a window if it is minimized first. the only way to reliably
choose what window you want focused is to use exposé, which can make
things REALLY confusing if you have more than ten windows. Also, one
mouse button! It's too oversimplified! If we start purging everything,
then there won't be anything left to work with. If anything needs to be
cleaned up, it's the System/Administration folders. They don't make any
sense.

posts up. Otherwise, things were rolling just the way they were with the
latest udev updates (back in, of course!)

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-07 Thread Chauncellor
I'm 32 bit with the generic kernel.

I don't remember exactly what my drives are, but I can tell you that
they are both IDEs - One is a DVD writer, one's just a run-of-the-mill
CD reader. Both are stocks from an HP Pavilion a730n (literally the only
things I haven't replaced in that computer yet!). The DVD writer is in
fact a Lite-on. Perhaps this is only affecting that type?

I installed Wubi on the Windows machine I'm using now using a livecd
installer from when Intrepid first came out and the problem was there. I
installed udev 124-9 and the problem immediately disappeared. One drive
was a TDK DVD writer and the other an HP DVD writer.

I'll be back at my box on Tuesday, ready to assist further if need be.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-14 Thread Chauncellor
Okay, I lied. It's still there for some reason it hadn't done it for
a long time (even with CDs being in there previously), but I've been
installing a two-disc program under Virtual Box and it's been retracting
every single time.

I get a lot of this when I eject (all of these did not retract):

$ sudo eject -v cdrom1
eject: device name is `cdrom1'
eject: expanded name is `/dev/cdrom1'
eject: `/dev/cdrom1' is a link to `/dev/scd1'
eject: `/dev/scd1' is mounted at `/media/cdrom1'
eject: unmounting device `/dev/scd1' from `/media/cdrom1'
eject: `/dev/scd1' is not a multipartition device
eject: trying to eject `/dev/scd1' using CD-ROM eject command
eject: CD-ROM eject command failed
eject: trying to eject `/dev/scd1' using SCSI commands
eject: SCSI eject succeeded

I attached my current /etc/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules
file.

Anything I can do?

[Bug 410381] [NEW] Theme reverts to default after crash

Using Ubuntu 9.04, not quite up to date (last system update was June

[Bug 410523] [NEW] Crashes when note input/note moving

2009-08-07 Thread Chauncellor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mscore

I can't specifically say when it crashes, but it will sometimes crash
when doing standard things, like note input.

This particular instance was me inputting a bunch of notes, and it
finally crashed while I grabbed and dragged a note upward.

I don't know what would be of more help, but I'd be glad to follow any
directions

My computer has not been updated since June 18, but I am running
Musescore 0.9.5 RC2 and I updated the libqt4-scripttools, libsndfile1,
and sndfile-programs packages manually because a development version of
Musescore was requiring them to be updated, but I think that was because
of a saving bug from before.

I attached the terminal output.

[Bug 410523] Re: Crashes when note input/note moving

2009-08-07 Thread Chauncellor
I've never been able to pinpoint what causes the crash. Sometimes it has
crashed while entering a note, sometimes when moving the play cursor,
etc. I am doing a small project for myself, and I will use the terminal
and also be much more aware of what happens. The score file that caused
that crash was just a new file, I just started clicking notes and
messing around, trying to make it crash, which it inevitably does after
a while. I have another few bugs, if you don't mind me spamming
launchpad.:)

If you would like, I could attach the score file that I've been working
on today (it's just simple scales, I'm making a midi for LMMS for tuning
purposes - it's much faster this way than in LMMS), but I don't think it
makes much difference, as they all seem to crash (or do other funky
things, which I'll reserve the excitement for more reports) inevitably.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information / new update-manager behaviour is annoying

2009-08-10 Thread Chauncellor
hdante: Your snide remarks made me chuckle for quite a while. I'm all
for a program that does that!

Seriously, though, at 31 dupes, more subscribers than I can count, and a
100 percent (I believe) consensus from the community that this behavior
is stupid, I'm a little sad to notice that there's nothing being done.
Or rather, nothing ALLOWED to be done. It seems to be beyond the point
of "the average user as opposed to the power user". The sheer,
overwhelming number of people, power user or no, that agree that this
*needs* to be changed for the better should be a fair indicator.

I'm not terribly miffed if a faulty program is shipped by default in
Ubuntu (Hardy's PulseAudio - what a mess), but I am extremely sad that
my favorite cause has to become so distinguished in its tact (or lack
therof). I'm just trying to illustrate the reality that this is truly
offensive to some people. This and the whole Ubuntu One naming fiasco is
something that I think needs much revision. I really adore Canonical,
and I think you and Shuttleworth all have done wonders for the
community, but you must remember that this relationship is symbiotic!
Without each other, there's no Ubuntu, just another distro!

[Bug 296123] Re: Add audio/visual notifications

2009-08-04 Thread Chauncellor
This should not be a wishlist item. The visual notifications are
implemented, and the audio notifications are implemented in the program
as well. as Jonathan Rogers shows, the problem lies within the gnome-
desktop itself, lacking the necessary audio files. The whole sound theme
idea is completely broken, honestly. I manually do everything I need to.
I have chmod-ed my /usr/share/sounds directory for easy access to put
sounds in there because the theming does not work.

have the ~/.themes/[oldtheme] folder deleted when you click delete.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-06-10 Thread Chauncellor
mb_webguy: Perhaps you should take a look at bug number 1 :). While
Linux might not care, Ubuntu does.

Really, I'm just scared to death of Gnome 2.30/3.0 modeling too much
after Mac - meaning having nothing of real productive value in the GUI
(good lord, if there's a dock, I swear I'll kill myself). If this
happens, I believe for the first time I'll be considering switching over
to KDE. I've always loved GNOME for the two+ years I've used it, and I'd
hate for it to get spoiled. Don't get me wrong, I'm welcome to changes
in GNOME, but if there isn't a good substitute for the notification
area, which seems to be the ultimate victim, I'm afraid I wouldn't be
the only one ditching it.

I digress, though. ddumont, even though I agree with you, I feel that
aggression won't get us anywhere. MPT knows that the majority of us hate
it already. At this point in time, I'm just pleading for an option. Give
us an option to keep the notification tray if we end up not liking the
alternative presented, and please give us the option of having our
updates showing up in there.

[Bug 425979] Re: Holding shift fails to display grub2 menu

Is this a BIOS problem? I also cannot get my machine to show the menu. I

happens. Is there a workaround that can be used?

[Bug 574069] [NEW] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-02 Thread Chauncellor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

As per this forum post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469528

In a nutshell, when nvidia-settings --load-config-only is run on startup
(which is a default action), compiz performance becomes rather terrible.
This has been confirmed on both fresh install and upgrade.

The workaround is to disable the action on startup. However, manually
going to the nvidia-settings program will bring compiz down to its knees
again (at least in my case: I believe another person had no problem).

[Bug 577472] [NEW] [Wishlist] Have sub-lists for pidgin in indicator-applet

2010-05-08 Thread Chauncellor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

The screen/mockup explains everything that I'm trying to say, but:

Pidgin in the indicator-applet does not show new contacts/messages as
evolution does its "New Message" and "Show Contacts" items. Instead, new
IM messages presents another menu entry completely left justified, which
is slightly confusing to the eye. It would make more organizational
sense to place them more towards the center for a more organized feel.

[Bug 109701] Re: [needs-packaging] Truecrypt

2010-05-08 Thread Chauncellor
I may be wrong, but I think easycrypt is just a frontend of Truecrypt;
it still needs truecrypt to function correctly (at least it asks if it
wants to install truecrypt if you haven't already).

[Bug 560180] Re: wacom buttons don't work/cause mouse to move to upper left corner and click.

2010-05-08 Thread Chauncellor
** Description changed:

- I upgraded from karmic koala to lucid beta on a lenovo laptop, and I use
wacom tablet for inpu.
- In karmic, the pad butons- the butons on the tablet itelf worked fine, and
could be remapped with xsetwacom. In lucid the buttons both for wacom intous 3
and intous 4 don't work, and cause the cursor to jump to the top-left corner of
the screen. I can't change this behavior with xsetwacom. Even he scroll
wheel/scroll pad does the same thing.
+ Since upgrading to Lucid, the buttons both for wacom intous 3 and intous
+ 4 don't work, and cause the cursor to jump to the top-left corner of the
+ screen. I can't change this behavior with xsetwacom. Even he scroll
+ wheel/scroll pad does the same thing. As a result, all buttons/scrolling
+ utilities are rendered unusable.
+
+ A newer release of the program fixes the problems that were present.
+ Please consider this as an SRU for Lucid as this bug renders much of a
+ tablet's features useless. The site with the changelog:
+
+ http://www.mail-archive.com/linuxwacom-
+ de...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00736.html
+
+ The diff between versions that fixes the bug:
+
+ - /* Pad is always in absolute mode. */
+ + /* Pad is always in relative mode. */
+ if (IsPad(priv))
+ -   priv->flags |= ABSOLUTE_FLAG;
+ +   priv->flags &= ~ABSOLUTE_FLAG;
+
+ their reasoning:
+
+ "The pad cannot be in absolute mode as it sends the axis values to the
+ server. Since the pad never gets x/y coordinates from the tablet the server
+ will fill in the defaults (0/0) for it - even if first_valuator is always >
+ 1. This results in the pointer being reset to the screen origin each time
+ the pad's scroll strip is used."

[Bug 524701] Re: nm-applet not completely loaded on startup.

2010-05-06 Thread Chauncellor
Okay, using a fresh install of Lucid. I have found on two different
machines that sometimes any applet of some sort will not load
completely. It may be the "minimize all windows" applet, the "indicator-
session", "indicator-applet", or the "system" menu.

This isn't a graphical glitch as I cannot use the menus that are
corrupted. For instance, if half of "System" is missing, then I can use
"applications" and "places", but I cannot access "system".

Changing to gnome-panel, though I have no idea what really is causing
this.

** Package changed: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) => gnome-panel
(Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- nm-applet not completely loaded on startup.
+ Applets not completely loaded on startup.

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Recently upon startup the nm-applet doesn't quite load all the way.
instead, a second volume icon is loaded in its place. If I context click
where the nm-applet should be, I get the context click of the
notification area, as if I were clicking on the three dashes that
signify the borders of the notification area. If I send a killall
command to nm-applet and start it manually again, everything goes back
  to normal.

[Bug 490893] Re: Resume brings system instability and hard freezes

2010-05-06 Thread Chauncellor
Fresh reinstalled Lucid when I switched from Karmic. I still have the
problem, but far less frequently. Instead of a 100 percent chance of the
desktop being screwed up, it's more like 10 percent.

When this happens, I cannot even switch to tty1. The system is
completely and utterly powerless. The only thing I haven't tried is ssh-
ing into it, but I really don't think that will do any good unless I
know what to look for in there (though I would bet that I would be
unable to anyway!)

[Bug 490893] Re: Resume brings system instability and hard freezes

2010-05-06 Thread Chauncellor
pm-suspend says everything was a success, no errors.

I am attaching a truncated version of my /var/log/kern.log. I guess one
should ignore the massive amounts of "Buffer I/O error on device sr0,
logical block 0" errors.

I suspended my computer at night on May 5, and resumed it this morning
around 8.

Possible lines of note:

16: ACPI handle has no context!
109-onwards.
