[Bug 304255] [NEW] Apps using openAL crash along with the sound system

2008-12-01 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Ever since I upgraded to Intrepid, I have been facing an issue with the
sound system, which I have discussed here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=994172

Editing /etc/openal/alsoft.conf and changing the device value in the
section titled [alsa] as below fixes it (at least for me).

device = pulse

However, it would be easier if the default settings handled this
automatically.

[Bug 114784] Extraction fails for .tar.gz archive

extract the contents I get two different behaviors based on how I
perform it.

1. If I do not select any of the files inside the archive and click on extract
button on the toolbar to extract, it does not give any problem.
2. However, if I select the top-most directory(demo) and click on extract

[Bug 50320] Re: Kubuntu's system settings app doesn't handle file associations

2007-10-21 Thread Chandru
I did not try this workaround. But, I think the layout of kubuntu's
"system-settings" is good. But it must definitely have an option to
change file associations in it, especially as dolphin has become the
default file manager.

Another option would be add the option in dolphin itself, just as
konqueror had it. I have put up a feature request at
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151094

I requested interested users and developers to give your feedback there
so that KDE team looks into it and fixes it upstream.

2007-10-21 Thread Chandru
I agree with that point, KDE's default control centre is amazing enough
for anyone. But a menu option in the file manager, which would in turn
load the corresponding control centre module shouldn't hurt.

This feature can and should be a part of a file manager also, because it
is the one responsible for managing files and we are talking about
*file* associations.

What I meant was file manager is not the wrong place to put it after all
file manager is meant to handle stuffs related to files.

But putting it in "System Settings", though different, is an equally
excellent design decision.

At the end of the day all we need is a clearly visible facility to
change file associations.

[Bug 114784] Re: Found the fix

2007-05-24 Thread Chandru
I've found where the problem lies. The problem is caused due to the
fact that the tar program reports error when both a directory and its
files/subdirs are provided in the list of files to be extracted.

Consider the following directory structure inside the archive
(test.tar.gz).

test
|
|-demo
  |
  |-index.html

Now executing the following command,

tar -xzf test.tar.gz test test/demo test/demo/index.html

would generate the following error,

tar: test/demo: Not found in archive
tar: test/demo/index.html: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

This is exactly the problem generated by ark. There is no necessity to include
the children of the directory selected to be included in the list of files to
be extracted, as the contents of the directories specified get extracted by
default.

tar -xzf test.tar.gz test

would be sufficient. However, this is not true for other archive
programs like zip.

The problem at hand:

In the source code of ark, the "FileListView" class (inside
filelistview.cpp) contains the function "selectedFilenames()" which adds
the children of the selected directory also to the list of selected
files. This when used by "TarArch::unarchFileInternal()", causes the
problem.

Solution:

This problem can be solved, if a piece of code is incorporated into
"FileListView::selectedFilenames()" to check the mime-type of the
currently opened archive and if it is a tar type, the children of the
selected directories should not be included in the list of selected
files.

I hope this understanding would greatly help the developers in fixing
the problem soon. I'm very sorry that I'm not able to solve the problem
myself as I don't have the time to do fix it in the code. I've dared to
change the status of the bug to "confirmed".

[Bug 161816] Widescreen monitor (Acer AL1702W) is not using proper resolution

2007-11-10 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

When I run Kubuntu 7.10, using the live install CD, my monitor model
(Acer AL1702W) and its max resolution (1440x900) are detected correctly.
However only three-fourth of the screen was used and the display was
badly skewed. I'm using an nVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000.

When I checked the System Settings, I found that while the resolution is
detected properly, the "Image Format" for the monitor was set to
"Standard 4:3". When I changed it to "Widescreen 16:9" and restarted X,
everything was fine.

[Bug 164801] Change in dependency of libxine1 and broken new package

2007-11-23 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I recently ran,

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

To my horror I found that "libxine1" depended on gnome packages while
I'm a KDE user. The fact is libxine1 depends on libxine1-plugins which
depends on libxine1-gnome and so all this.

I know I can circumvent this by installing libxine1-misc-plugins instead
and did so. Now none of my video files played with kaffeine I keep
getting the error

No video drivers initialized

Why all this confusion what was wrong with the previous dependencies of
libxine1? Also, why is libxine1-misc-plugins so badly broken?

[Bug 161816] Re: Widescreen monitor (Acer AL1702W) is not using proper resolution

2007-12-28 Thread Chandru
I have changed my graphics card now and I have run into this new bug
now.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-systemsettings/+bug/163642

Kubuntu seems to be too weak at automatically handling widescreen
monitors correctly. If someone can confirm the above bug, it will be
good.

My current xorg.conf may not be useful to you as it has changed to a
great extent now.

[Bug 163642] Maximum choosable resolution is too low even with nvidia driver

2007-11-18 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

I recently changed motherboard and started using the nVIDIA GeForce 6150
graphics card which comes bundled with ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard.

When running from live CD a resolution of 800x600 is used while my
monitor supports upto 1440x900. I thought this was because the binary
nVIDIA fdriver was not installed. I installed to the hard disk and
using "Restricted Driver Manager", installed the nvidia-glx-new package
and restarted the system. Still the low resolution was kept. So I
thought changing the resolution in "Monitor & Display" section will fix
it.

However, to my shock 800x600 and 640x480 were the only two resolutions
offered in the settings module. The slider was at its right most end.

Of course, Windows too did not pick the right resolution automatically
after installing driver. At least I was able to set the right
resolution graphically easily.

Then I had to run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to fix it. Though I
have managed it because I know how to fix it, this can be intimidating
for new users wanting to try Kubuntu on their new hardware. This may
even make them avoid trying Kubuntu in future.

I have a suggestion (which may not be easily implementable). Just list
all possible normal and widescreen resolutions and use the hardware
detection only to choose the default resolution. If necessary the user
must be allowed to choose a higher resolution.

[Bug 180007] There is no easy way to change icons for file types

2008-01-02 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There is no easy way to change icons for file types. If I change in the
properties dialog of a file, the icon only for that particular file.
There should be an easy way to change the icons for all files of same
type.

This is especially important for files which do not have a proper icon
by default. The problem in my case was with .jar files. These files
were displayed with a plain white icon. I was able to change the
association for all .jar files from the properties dialog of a
particular .jar file. But was not able to change the icon displayed for

[Bug 546650] Re: Unable to click items below notifications

2010-04-12 Thread Chandru
robket, I use Empathy and I have never noticed the behavior you mention.
Have you tried any other application which produces notifications (like
rhythmbox) and seen if this behavior is present there too?

[Bug 554737] Re: ply_boot_client_flush() does not read replies (plymouth stuck during/after filesystem check or error)

2010-04-15 Thread Chandru
Savvas. I face the same behavior too. If there nothing to check the
message should not be displayed at all. If there is some check
happening and the drives found to be OK, why is the check being
performed for each boot in the first place?

Marking it as a confirmed with the assumption that a fix to this bug has
caused the new behavior. If some of the maintainers confirm that it is
a totally independent regression, I'm ready to raise a separate bug.

2010-03-30 Thread Chandru
Re-opening because only part of the original bug report is fixed. With

However, when compiz is off the notification does not hide as before.
So I'm unable to see anything below the notifications though I can click
them if I know what is present.

[Bug 591851] [NEW] Huawei EC1260 doesn't work out of the box

2010-06-09 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: modemmanager

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with all latest updates installed. Huawei
EC1260 (provided by Tata Photon+ service in India) USB modem doesn't get
connected in this setup though the device gets detected just fine by
network manager.

It worked after installing the updated modemmanager package
(0.3-0ubuntu4) from ppa:hardik-dalwadi/ppa. It will be handy if the
necessary fixes are incorporated into the modemmanager package available
in main repo.

[Bug 593105] [NEW] Huawei EC1261 doesn't get detected reliably

2010-06-12 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

I use a Huawei EC1261 USB modem. After installing usb-modeswitch it
works fine from the stock Lucid kernel version. But on a fully updated
system, it gets detected sometimes while at other times, it doesn't and
checking dmesg, show that it is stuck at "waiting for device to settle
before scanning".

Other USB devices like mouse and thumb drives work just fine.
Downgrading the kernel to the default Lucid version (2.6.32-21) works
too.

[Bug 546650] [NEW] Unable to click items below notifications

2010-03-24 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notify-osd

After an update to Lucid Beta-1 I notice that I'm unable to click
anything under notifications and since notifications don't have any
option to close manually I'm having to wait till it times out.

Also, if a compositing window manager is not available notifications
don't hide as before. Instead they become a black rectangle instead of
the usual rounded rectangle.

[Bug 1644327] [NEW] UMASK set in /etc/login.defs is ignored when logging in through lightdm

2016-11-23 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

I have set UMASK 077 in /etc/login.defs and there is no override in
~/.profile, ~/.bashrc or the corresponding system-wide files.

The umask command still prints 0022 in gnome terminal, but prints 0007
when I log into tty1. Newly created files get the same permissions as
when umask is set to 0022 within the Unity session.

Even a full system reboot does not change this behaviour.

** Description changed:

I have set UMASK 077 in /etc/login.defs and there is no override in
  ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc or the corresponding system-wide files.

The umask command still prints 0022 in gnome terminal, but prints 0007
when I log into tty1. Newly created files get the same permissions as
when umask is set to 0022 within the Unity session.
+
+ Even a full system reboot does not change this behaviour.

[Bug 1463667] [NEW] No shortcut number is assigned to the most recently opened window

2015-06-09 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

When an application that is not locked to the launcher is opened, its
window doesn't get a shortcut number assigned. However, when I open
another application, the previous one gets a number assigned, but the
new one does not. Moving the application's icon around in the launcher
also assigns it a shortcut.

Note: I have less than 10 application icons in my launcher.

[Bug 1503417] [NEW] Cannot enter disk encryption password

2015-10-06 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

When booting with an encrypted root partition, I'm unable to enter the
password when prompted during boot. Rebooting by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del
twice, displays grub menu and then puts me in a degraded mode of some
sort where I can enter the password and boot successfully. Disabling
splash in grub options works too by using a text mode password input.

This seems to have been introduced in some of the recent updates. It
used to work fine after my initial installation of 15.04.

[Bug 1463667] Re: No shortcut number is assigned to the most recently opened window

2015-09-17 Thread Chandru
Yes happens every time on Ubuntu 15.04 with all updates applied.

How I open the application doesn't seem to matter, as long as the
application is not locked to launcher. For example, I can open the trash
with "Super+T" or I can open the calculator by tapping super key and
typing the name. Neither of them get a shortcut assigned.

Applications which are locked to launcher get and retain the correct
shortcut always.
