[Bug 245909] [NEW] Installing virtualbox-ose doesn't install kernel support

2008-07-05 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

In 8.04 I tried to install virtualbox-ose through Synaptic. It installed
fine and brought along two other small libraries.

I ran virtualbox-ose successfully through "Applications > System Tools >
Virtualbox OSE" until I tried to actually run a guest.

I made a new guest using 256MB or RAM, a new 8GB expandable hard disk
using the Warty image (warty-release-install-i386.iso) for a CD-ROM.

As soon as I booted it up, I received this message:

Failed to start the virtual machine Ubuntu 4.10.

VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either
not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Please install the
virtualbox-ose-modules package for your kernel, e.g.
virtualbox-ose-modules-generic..
VBox status code: -1908 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED).

Result Code:
0x80004005
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45}

However, as soon as I installed 'virtualbox-ose-guest-modules-generic'
and 'virtualbox-ose-modules-generic' through Synaptic, the guest booted
up.

Should installing virtualbox-ose not rely on installing some kernel
modules as well, dependant on what the server has?

[Bug 242478] Re: Nautilus can not display FTP quite often

2008-07-28 Thread Brett Alton
No, sorry Sebastian, I was incorrect at assuming it was Nautilus.

Turns out the server has SCP and not SFTP capabilities, so everything I
was trying was failing. Turns out I need to use the 'fish' protocol in
KDE or WinSCP through Wine.

My apologies.

Also, I have a couple of other FTP logins that have a username with a
dot in the middle, and they work, so that defuncts my bad username case.

Please close.

[Bug 253157] [NEW] [hardy] ffmpeg_video_code is 'swf' but requires extra libraries to view

2008-07-29 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: motion

I found a Catch-22 with motion: Right now, in Hardy, due to this change:

  * motion.conf: Default ffmpeg_video_code is swf (libavcodec-dev and
libavformat-dev don't have support to mpeg in Debian). See changelog
ffmpeg-free.

motion outputs video in SWF format. However, an Ubuntu desktop can not
view SWF files by default and require extra libraries to view them.

Thus, would it be better for the client (person viewing the videos) to
have to install extra libraries, or should the server install mpeg4
libraries to enable .avi output which is viewable by default in the
Ubuntu desktop?

For me, it would seem best to output in mpeg4 format for the client's
sake.

[Bug 38066] Re: No possibility to save file over gnome-vfs ftp connection

2008-07-31 Thread Brett Alton
So then this is a gnome-vfs issue is it not? Isn't gnome-vfs being
replaced by gio/gvfs? Or do I have something mixed up?

If so, then upstream is porting gEdit to gio/gvfs for 2.24 and thus this
should be fixed for Intrepid, correct?

[Bug 306335] [NEW] gEdit ported to gio/gvfs, FTP support should be default

2008-12-08 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

According to gEdit's lead developer, pbor, gEdit was ported from gnome-
vfs to gio/gvfs in 2008/08 [1] meaning that gEdit 2.24 lost its
dependency on gnome-vfs and thus, bad FTP support.

FTP is currently disabled due to bad support via gnome-vfs, but this is
now much improved with gio/gvfs.

Can we see '/apps/gedit-2/preferences/editor/save/writable_vfs_schemes'
get 'ftp' added as a value by default in Jaunty and possibly backported
to Intrepid?

This will hopefully close bug #38066[2] and bug #51610[3].

[Bug 282995] Re: [intrepid] New 'quick search' is unable to search for dashes '-'

2008-11-10 Thread Brett Alton
It's better, but not fixed completely.

If you search for 'sun-java', it searches 'sun' and 'java' just like
Roman Polach's 'mozilla-mplayer'.

Should it not actually use the '-' (dash) as a search term? If I want to
search 'mozilla' and 'mplayer' or 'sun' and 'java', I'll add a space
(e.g. 'sun java', 'mozilla mplayer').

Dashes are very important in package names and I believe they should be
treated as such in the search.

Can anyone else confirm?

[Bug 294519] Re: Jockey has no error message stating that 'multiverse' and 'restricted' repos need to be enabled

2008-11-24 Thread Brett Alton
No no, I was saying that when you select the 'free software only'
install, should the nVidia drivers show up?

They did for me and they couldn't be installed because 'restricted' and
'multiverse' were disabled.

There was no error message, but rather the program was caught in a loop
looking for the drivers.

I knew the problem (restricted and multiverse were disabled) so I
enabled them and jockey proceeded to work.

So the problem is that there was no error message when the drivers
couldn't be enabled due to the 'free software only' install option.

You said when that option is selected that the proprietary nVidia
drivers don't show up, but they did for me.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.1

2008-11-25 Thread Brett Alton
For those of you who say "Why does this need to be packaged? Just unzip
and run!", I think you're forgetting about package management.

To upgrade Eclipse to 3.4.1 would be a nightmare without package
management across a school board or business.

[Bug 159276] Re: phpmyadmin package does not work "out of the box"

2008-11-30 Thread Brett Alton
As epimeteo said in the forums:

You don't need any link to /var/www/. You can remove that link try:

http://localhost/phpmyadmin

It will work.

The phpmyadmin alias in apache is set in /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf and
this one is linked to /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf, so there is
no need to add a link to /var/www/, unless you want it to be clearly
visible to others.

I actually never knew this and always ran `sudo ln -s /etc/phpmyadmin
/var/www/admin`.

I can confirm that http://localhost/phpmyadmin works without
modification (as per my one liner above) in Hardy and Intrepid.

[Bug 305916] Re: Please upgrade phpmyadmin to new upstream version 3.1.1

2009-01-29 Thread Brett Alton
I also subscribed ubuntu-universe-sponsors, as per the
SyncRequestProcess.

On a personal level, I installed phpMyAdmin 3.1.2-1 straight from the
packages.debian.org website[1] and I've had no problems with talking to
my MySQL DB, creating new databases, new tables, adding new users, etc.

I know this is anecdotal and doesn't take into account every aspect of
the program nor security, but it's the best I can do.

[Bug 323048] [NEW] Please upgrade gnome-do to 0.8

2009-01-29 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

gnome-do 0.8 was recently released and through their marketing state:

New plugins
 * Banshee, Bibtex, Cl.ickable, Claws mail, Google search, Opera, Ping.FM,
Remember the Milk, System services, TinyUrl, Tracker search, and Translate to
name a few. Plugins also install much faster now.

Faster Search, Better Results
 * Memory usage is down, and searches are noticably snappier. Our relevance
algorithms are also better than ever -- Do will learn your habits and offer
personalized search results immediately.

Animated Themes
 * Do's themes -- Classic, Mini, Glass, and the newly added Nouveau and Docky
-- now sport gorgeous animations and dropshadows. Watch for falling jaws.

Docky
 * Docky[1] is our attempt to make Do more discoverable and memorable. It's the
same Do you know and love, just a little friendlier.

File Previews
 * We've added preliminary support for viewing file thumbnails, so you can
better recognize the images, movies, and documents you encounter in Do. If your
file manager displays thumbnails, Do will attempt to show them.

Improved Text Entry
 * With support for copy, paste, and longer lines of text, Do's new extended
text entry mode is perfect for composing emails and tweets. Activate text entry
mode by pressing your period key.

Many Bugs Exterminated
 * 82 core bugs[2] and 29 plugin bugs[3] have been meticulously tracked and
squished. There's still a lot of work to do, but Do 0.8 is one well-oiled
machine.

New Plugin API:
 * In creating a more cross-platform codebase, a wonderful, platform-agnostic
plugin API emerged. Plugins now have extensive access to notifications,
logging, relevance information, threading tools, and much more.

bzr: https://code.launchpad.net/do

It seems like a major release and a well polished program, so I'd like
to see it updated to for Jaunty. It should be an easy pull since
development is done within Launchpad.net/bzr too[4].

[Bug 323048] Re: Please upgrade gnome-do to 0.8

2009-01-29 Thread Brett Alton
When does it become a bug? When it doesn't make it into Jaunty?

0.8 isn't in Debian and I don't know Debian's willingness to package 0.8
so Ubuntu will either have to wait for Debian or package it themselves.
This is a packaging request and I think it is quite valid.

[Bug 323048] Re: Please upgrade gnome-do to 0.8

2009-01-29 Thread Brett Alton
My apologies.

What should I, as a non-developer, do to not bug developers in this
manner? Just sit back and hope the piece of software gets packaged?
Should I learn how to make .debs?

I'm sorry, but I'm only trying to help and my ignorance in the
development process can get the best of me.

[Bug 323390] [NEW] sound/audio regression between 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-11

2009-01-30 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Simply put: I have sound/audio when I boot the 2.6.27-7 kernel, but not
with the 2.6.27-11 kernel in Ubuntu 8.10

I've been using Ubuntu since 5.10 on this computer and have always had
audio, that's why it is a regression.

[Bug 380119] Re: package linux-image-2.6.30-5-generic 2.6.30-5.6 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-06-16 Thread Brett Alton
I can confirm that trying to install Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 alpha-2 on my
Dell XPS Gen5 installs successfully except for grub2. Grub2 was
successfully chainloaded then upgraded in my jaunty partition however.

lshw: http://paste.ubuntu.com/195118/

I ended up using LILO and now am searching for a way to re-install
regular grub so I can boot back into my jaunty system.

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-06-12 Thread Brett Alton
Hi Till,

I have the printer ready to be installed on a different computer as I
noticed it is still not printing without any interaction from me (e.g.
it's still not "plug and play").

Are there any steps/logs you'd like me to follow/produce or would you
just like me to plug it in, turn it on, increase the verbosity of the
cups log, try and print a job and then send you the error_log?

The only reason I hesitate is because the printer doesn't even have the
spools spinning, as if it's not even receiving the commands from cups,
so I'm not sure how much will show in the error_log.

[Bug 386789] [NEW] 'grub2' does not carry over correct 'timeout' time from 'grub'

2009-06-13 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Using Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, I followed the instructions[1] for testing
grub2 on my Dell XPS Gen 5. Everything went smoothly and I submitted my
machine to the wiki.

However, although this doesn't bother me, I noticed my 'timeout' was set
to 10 seconds with 'grub' and 5 seconds with 'grub2'.

I figure 5 seconds is a good default, but some might have it set at '0'
or '60' seconds, depending on their preferences and I figured this
number should be carried over when running 'upgrade-from-grub-legacy'

I'll post the old 'grub' configuration and the new 'grub2'
configuration.

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-06-15 Thread Brett Alton
[side note]
I got confused in 'Selective upgrading from -proposed' on how to only upgrade
system-config-printer because aptitude is a very confusing program to me. If
anyone can simplify those steps in the wiki, that would be much appreciated. I
ended up updating my whole system with -proposed.

[real note]
I deleted my HP LaserJet P1005 through -19.1 and then upgraded to -19.2, turned
on the printer and it appears it is using 'HP LaserJet P1005 Foomatic/foo2xqx
(recommended)' with the URI as 'hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1005?serial=BC174RP'.

Still no printing unfortunately. The printer says that the document is
complete, but the printer makes no action (spools don't spin or
anything).

Please let me know what further debugging information you need.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-06-15 Thread Brett Alton
I would say make a variable grid if people would like to keep variable
sized icons, meaning make a grid that is 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128
and then the default sorta-grid that Nautilus has right now...

That's how "KDE, XFCE, Windows 3.1 to 7, OS X" all have it as Pelládi
Gábor said.

I know this idea is too complex for One Hundred Paper Cuts, but it's an
important usability bug I think.

[Bug 130224] Re: gtkfilechooser save/save as dialog misplaces focus

2009-06-16 Thread Brett Alton
That's because you just clicked on a folder, so now the focus is with
the folders, not with the filename. The problem was previously that the
filename text field was never in focus when the dialog first opened. Now
it is in focus when it's first opened, but if you move the focus to a
folder (like you said) how is it supposed to know that you want to know
type the filename?

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-25 Thread Brett Alton
I don't even like how Firefox has no labels on its buttons (e.g. "Home",
"Back", etc.) while the rest of Gnome (a.k.a. Nauitlus) has labels
(preferences set at System > Preferences > Appearance > Interface >
"Text Below Items"... even if Firefox ignores this).

The reason Firefox ignores these preferences (e.g. takes away the
text/labels) is for more screen space on the user's screen.

I'm in favour of getting rid of Firefox bookmark toolbar and bringing
back the text below the icons, bringing both Firefox and Gnome/Nautilus
in harmony.

The minimal Nautilus David is suggesting reminds me of the old style of
Nautilus Ubuntu used to ship with (see my Wikipedia screenshot at:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Ubuntu-
desktop-2-410-20080706.png)

(sorry if I sent this twice... Launchpad is acting up)

[Bug 394356] Re: Remove "Open with" and quotation marks from entries in "Open with" sub-menu

2009-07-06 Thread Brett Alton
I like the idea of this bug and what Marcus has done to fix the problem
(implementing David's suggestions), but why are we getting rid of the
"Open with..." submenu when only 2 programs are available? That's
changing what the user expects to see from one file to the next. To me,
the "Open with..." submenu should be there always, or never and not be
contextually dependent.

That's like changing the icon of the close button in Metacity from "X"
to "O" depending if it's maximized or not. The user should expect to see
the same result every time.

Thus, I would like to see
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28606444/noquotes.png implemented.

[Bug 363522] [NEW] HP LaserJet P1005 unusable in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-04-18 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

In Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 I could plug in my HP LaserJet P1005 and Ubuntu
would attempt to install a driver. Unfortunately, it wouldn't work. I
learned that it needed the newest hplip (which Jaunty 9.04 had) so I
installed that.

When I plugged the printer in in Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, Ubuntu stated that
the driver could not be installed and needed a proprietary extension. It
proceeded to run 'gksu hp-setup -u'. Unfortunately the program failed to
run and I was unable to get my printer working.

I ran the program manually and the terminal output said:

warning: Qt/PyQt 4 initialization failed.
error: hp-plugin requires GUI support (try running with --qt3). Try using
interactive (-i) mode.

So I tried it with --qt3 and that failed, but -i worked. Using -i I was
able to install the proper plugins (according to the program). I then
tried to print and failed to do so three times. Here is my output of

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-04-20 Thread Brett Alton
If that's true Sebastian, about nautilus having a grid, then what I
think would be a suitable workaround for this bug is an option that not
just aligns to a grid when clicked, but forces icons to persistently be
aligned to a grid, thus forcing new volumes to not overlap or new
folders to be hidden under existing icons.

See Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Windows 95 to 7 for this.

I also deleted the printer out of my system on an up-to-date Jaunty

The printer blinks when and the spools rotate when I turn on the

On the side, is there any program where users can send you money to
purchase certain printers or actually send you printers as a donation? I
just figure it'd be easier to do that than play "cat and mouse" and
waste your time!

[Bug 363522] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 unusable in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-04-25 Thread Brett Alton
As the owner of this bug, I can confirm that this patch does allow HPLIP
to install the proper patch for my printer.

However, I found two problems:

Firstly, HPLIP runs through a terminal and asks me if I would like to
download the plugin and if I accept the license, etc. It being in a
terminal seems horribly out of place with the look & feel of the
desktop. I was able to traverse through the instructions, but it doesn't
seem to fit in the GNOME desktop

Secondly, when the plugin is done downloading and installing, the
dialogue that says "Describe printer" and asks for the printer's Name,
Description and Location has the printer's name as 'printer'. Not sure
if you can add a hook to add the proper printer's name after HPLIP runs,
but I'm sure it'd help with look & feel.

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-04-25 Thread Brett Alton
I wiped the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 with the Jaunty UNR image and enabled
-proposed due to the other bug I opened[1] and after I run 'diagnose'
using some sort of printing dialogue that pops up after a failed print,
it says '/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'.

This means nothing has changed (e.g. enabling -proposed and getting
HPLIP to install the HP LaserJet P1005 proper plugin did not help).

I then enabled cups logging to verbose, tried printing again and am
attaching another log.

(2) Printed a test page with debugging on
(3) Printed a test page using Firefox

No action from the printer occurred. No jamming or paper grabbing.

Ubuntu 9.04 successfully detected this USB printer and even launched
system-config-printer to install my hplip driver, so the problem must
lie in the driver (I assume that as /usr/lib/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi
crashes).

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-04-23 Thread Brett Alton
I hope this helps!

The printer is now sort of half working, except that it jams every time
it pulls paper... before it wasn't even printing. I'm going to fresh
install using the Jaunty Netbook image for this Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and
see if that helps anything.

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04

2009-04-24 Thread Brett Alton
The printer fails to print (no error messages) when using the HPIJS
driver.

"Document Print Status" sits there with my document on 'pending' and the
printer makes no action (does not grab paper or anything).

[Bug 293300] [NEW] xserver-xorg fails to correctly configure dual-monitors

2008-11-03 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

In Intrepid, I'm trying to configure my nVidia GeForce 6800 to display
via its DVI and VGA output, two monitors.

When the computer boots, the screens are mirrored, but when GDM loads,
the screens become scrambled and can not be used.

In fact, I'm in tty1 right now.

I tried the setup with Windows XP and it worked after nVidia's
configuration wizard was ran.

I am using a default install of Intrepid using the 'free software only'
option, thus no proprietary drivers are in use - only main and universe
software.

The monitors are Dell 1905FP (1280x1024) and LG Flatron W1934S
(1440x900).

I will attach my 'sudo lscpi -vvnn' and 'xorg.conf' file.

[Bug 292825] Re: Slider in rhythmbox causes crashes

2008-11-04 Thread Brett Alton
Yes, crossfading is what made it crash it looks like, even though it
wasn't changing songs but rather skipping to the middle.

However, now that I turned off crossfading and restarted, Rhythmbox
doesn't even allow me use of the slider (e.g. the slider will not skip
to where I place it, but rather only a minute change forward).

This happens on a fresh install as well.

[Bug 294519] [NEW] Jockey has no error message stating that 'multiverse' and 'restricted' repos need to be enabled

2008-11-05 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) using the 'free software only'
option which means no 'restricted' or 'multiverse' repositories.
However, these repositories are required to download my nVidia drivers
(which I know from previous experience).

When I go to "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" (e.g. jockey)
and select to install "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 177)
[Recommended]" for my nVidia GeForce 6800, I receive no error (or
confirmation) that the driver either installed or failed to install.

Once I enabled 'restricted' and 'multiverse' repositories, jockey
installed my nvidia drivers perfectly.

There needs to be an error that those repositories are required for
drivers of this nature, else no one will know how to enable them!

[Bug 282995] [NEW] [intrepid] New 'quick search' is unable to search for dashes '-'

2008-10-13 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

In Synaptic, when I search for something like 'ubuntu-res', it fails to
find 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'. This appears to be universal with any
package that includes a dash as searching for 'ubuntu' reviles the
package 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'.

This is seen by 'abiword' and 'abiword-', etc.

[Bug 270303] Re: firefox (intrepid): "your browser has been updated and needs to be restarted"

2008-10-14 Thread Brett Alton
I just had this problem with the current update in Intrepid. I hit the
'x' button and it still appeared on all my other tabs. Then I went back
to the original tab I closed it in and it reappeared!

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid ibex release

2008-10-14 Thread Brett Alton
I see no reason why 3.0 is of great importance for people to immediately
upgrade to.

The front-end looks verbatim to their 1.1 to 2.4 series and the backend
has new features that the home user rarely needs.
