I looked in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log. It was complaining about a nvidia driver it wanted to remove but couldn't because the pacakge was on a removal-blacklist. I just forced it away manually with apt-get remove and was able to continue. Sorry, this had blocked me for a while. I am also seeing this behaviour, and have seen it since Gutsy 7.10. I am using the same version of Intrepid and Pidgin listed above, as installed from the Alternate CD. As a workaround, you can do the following -- but the root cause should really be triaged and fixed: -Open Pidgin and log on to Yahoo! (or whatever messenger service you use) -Open the buddy list -Navigate 'Buddies' > 'Show' > uncheck 'Offline Buddies' -Navigate 'Buddies' > 'Show' > check 'Offline Buddies' Your buddy list will now show all offline buddies that you have flagged as "Show When Offline" If you need any further details, please don't hesitate to ask and I will post as needed. [Bug 304436] [NEW] After removing Places.sqlite FireFox browsers not working properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 Firefox was working just fine. A few days ago it just stopped working. It was after some UBUNTU updates I think. I also updated KOMODO Editor. After all of this firefox stopped working I had not history ,the back errors did not work and the buttons were all grayed out. I found what appeared to be a fix on the net. It said the rename places.sqlite and the journal to a backup name. I did. rebooted the computer and now I have the back button and some of the icons are ok. [Bug 24280] Re: applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes
There's a lot of confusion here. Themes should not be installed globally, though I think they should all be available globallly after installation. I agree that it is good to have a different theme for root actions - so I would like to launch gksu appearances to set my sudo theme, better option would be to have the option in the 'Appearances' window to 'relaunch as root'. I send the menu launcher to make a launcher on desktop, and put 'gksu' in front of the command. It launches, and it works - it has a different theme (metal instead of 'Moku') and looks altogether more authoritive than friendly wood, being steel. The trouble is that Root isn't looking to it's own folder for gksudo applications - it will look at the /usr folder and take the theme from there which is shared. Unless the desktop is launched as root, then sudo apps won't take the theme set by Appearances run as root. If they can find the theme in shared folders, they'll wear the same skin as the user. I would like to set a root theme to apply to my sudo apps. -- applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/24280 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 236326] Re: Podcasts: interrupted downloads cannot be completed, deleted downloads canot be reloaded
I have problems mostly when my internet connection is interrupted. My apartment is set up so that I must log in through a web browser, so when I am logged out, I am sent a login.php from the server. Browsing podcast directories revealed that one or two download files have been interrupted and renamed/replaced. Right now I am considering giving Banshee or Exaille a trial to see if the problem is similar with them - to be honest, I'd be much happier to use something lightweight like gpodder if it had a function to resume - I only want to use Rhythmbox/ the player/ to present me with options to play the files rather than have to autostart it to get the downloads going. gpodder is far behind in some respects - at least Rhythmbox uses a logical English archiving system to save the files. The worst aspect is that damaged downloads are lost and cannot be recovered through the podcatcher. -- Podcasts: interrupted downloads cannot be completed, deleted downloads canot be reloaded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236326 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80753] Re: Synaptic should be able to switch from non-root to root mode without losing state
When I ('ben') am logged into my wife's ('pig') account, I can open 'Users and Groups' normally (as Pig isn't a sudo'er) and there is a nice 'Unlock' key, which allows any administrator hanging around to choose their ID and authorise with their own password. With 'gksu' launchers, it becomes a little more painful, have to get a terminal going (bummer, shortcut doesn't work in her account, have to type 'gnome-terminal') and do 'su ben' and then 'gksu' whatever. Mixing up GUI and terminal is a bit of a pain sometimes - 'Appearance' works in one launcher, whereas you need 'gnome-appearance-properties' for terminal. In order to elevate the experience, there needs to be a shortcut. When a NON sudo'er tries to sudo anything, rather than threatening to report me to myself, I'd prefer to be faced with an authentication panel. If there is an 'open as Adminstrator' option, then it should work for an administrator anywhere and everywhere. Please fix this or I'll stab you through the heart with a plastic fork. (actually I'm more worried about newer users, because it's enough to hear them complain about how unlike Windows it is at the best of times, and it's worse when they're right). -- Synaptic should be able to switch from non-root to root mode without losing state https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 380543] [NEW] I have NO MENU IN GTK APPLICATIONS
Public bug reported: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/446031/nomenu%27.png In my account, GTK applications launch with no menu at the top. If I change to my 'ubuntu' guest account, they appear again. I am unsure when this happened, but it survived two reboots. I noticed it first when trying to use GIMP, then noticed the pattern - it is the same with Gwibber and Pidgin (though Firefox and Opera browsers are fine, there's no menu in Epiphany) I am using Jaunty 9.04, gnome desktop. [Bug 380543] Re: I have NO MENU IN GTK APPLICATIONS
A humble apology is in order. My poor internet connection isn't helping me. I installed 'globalmenu' and had not fully realised what it entailed, just wishing to try it out. I retrieved my menu's by sorting my hidden files, and found in /home/ben/.gconf/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk- modules an xml file which - when removed, gave menu's back. I tried it out for a while and after deciding it's not for me, I disabled the globalmenu and everything is fine again. -- I have NO MENU IN GTK APPLICATIONS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380543 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 24234] Re: apt-get update failing with bad signature.
I cured the problem, now my Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 updates are coming. I deleted all of the authentication keys from the sources list and ran Oldmanuk 's script. Then everthing worked like a charm. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs when i start portable ubuntu for windows, it loads just fine, but then i am not able to use my touchpad, or keyboard on my laptop. i tried a wireless mouse when it first happened and it worked fine. but when it happened the second time, the wireless mouse wouldn't work. i changed usb ports to which the wireless mouse was connected and still no luck. the light to the adapter wouldn't even turn on which means that no power was getting to it. but yet, the usb port to which my jump drive that had the portable ubuntu was still working. my wireless connection was lost and a notification told me that my earphone jack had been unplugged even though my headphones were still in the laptop. i don't know if this had happened to other people. what's goin on? i just want to test out portable ubuntu on windows i currently have windows vista 32-bit running on an AMD 64 Athlon X2 processor on an acer 4420 laptop with a signal up wireless card ** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- portable ubuntu disables touchpad, keyboard, wireless connection, and certain usb ports on laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

"This theme will not look as intended because the required GTK+ theme '' is not installed." This message appears with many instances and themes. I made a shorcut to appearance, and launch it as administrator. My appearance window launched in this fashion displays my 'slickness' and 'os v' very nicely - they were indeed installed well in 8.04 (the message saying that the GTK+ theme isn't installed still appears, though it applies the theme well - tabs included) However, the theme won't apply in the user account - I can have two appearance windows open. Switching in the 'user' window makes the 'root' window follow - only a very few can be applied from 'user', though the others work in root only. -- original Human theme is broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 292413] [NEW] kernel update errors in 8.10 upgrade
Public bug reported: While upgrading from Hardy (8.04) to Intrepid (8.10) via the Updates Manager, there were a number of errors, the last few of which I took screenshots of and selectively compiled into one PNG image for use here. After the "upgrade" had finished with so many errors, a couple of which seemed fatal to the upgrade, I loaded the updates manager again, where I received more errors, but this might be because I had not yet restarted the system. I then did reboot into Linux (I'm dual-booting Vista Home Premium as well) from Grub and got a couple more errors, although it did seem to boot using the new kernel, which I was happy about given the volume of error messages regarding the 2.6.27-7 kernel package installation. As I said above, I did not capture every error message, but the ones I did take are included in the attachment, from top to bottom chronologically, and their translations are below. 1.) The dialogue box reads, "We're sorry; the installation or update of package 'update-manager' failed." This is immediately after I got a similar one about the kernel's package. At the bottom of the terminal, note the error about GConf, but that has to do with not being able to find the config server and is probably not relevant. 2.) When I clicked "report the error" of course it tried to open Firefox, which caused it to give me another slew of errors about that for some reason. (Firefox was not running, but maybe there was a ghost process that caused this.) The rearmost dialogue box reads "The updates could not be installed. The update will be interrupted now. Your system could be left in an unusable state. It is carrying out a recovery (dpkg --configure -a)." The last line in the upgrade window's terminal after the bit about GConf (same error as before, by the way) reads: "intrepid: Fatal IO error (invalid file descriptor) on X server :0.0." 3.) This is where I (stupidly) reopened the updates window to try again, where by the way it acknowledged that it had been updated by no longer offering me 8.10 as an option at the top. When I attempted to install the 27 updates it found, it shortly spit out the following errors. I think the active window is giving a recap of all the major kernel errors it found ("An error has been produced. The following details are provided:"). From top to bottom, the error descriptions read: "the post- installation script subprocess returned an error code of 3" with the rest echoing "dependency problems - left without being configured". 4-5.) After I restarted, there was the expected notification (hidden behind the odd one in front) about the update's panel change about the exit button, but along with this balloon about the fact that it found an error on start-up. When I clicked the icon, it displayed the dialogue box in picture #5, which says "We're sorry; the installation or update of the 'linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic 2.6.27-7.15' package failed." Using the shown "Report problem" button brought me here. To recap: although it appears to have upgraded successfully, there were a number of severe errors regarding the kernel packages in the process. Just something to look into; if I find out that the update was not entirely successful, I will annotate this report to reflect that. [Bug 292413] Re: kernel update errors in 8.10 upgrade
To my surprise, it actually asked me multiple times how I wanted to update the menu.lst; the first time, I chose the merge, yes; after that, I just had it rewrite the automagic section. I have to add a statement to the kernel options to get my touchpad to work, but I didn't consider it a huge priority as long as the update completed successfully. So, in a way, the answer is both yes and no. It did end up rewriting my menu.lst without my custom kernel option, so I guess the subsequent requests to overwrite were successful, whether or not the "experimental" merge was. The only bug that I am posting is the "kernel error" of which you speak. I included reference to two other error messages just for contextual information. -- kernel update errors in 8.10 upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/292413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 138491] Re: gcursor doesn't change mouse cursor
The obvious first step is to remove it - purge gcursors from your system. It's not included with Intrepid. The best update that Intrepid could make is for themes to be installed to the shared directory. I currently have three bookmarks in my Root Nautillus bookmarks - the first is /home/ben/.themes - which is my personal repository. This is where themes dropped into the Appearance window are put. These themes don't work in your sudo apps, so these applications are still pig ugly! After installing a few themes, you should open a Root Nautilus, go to /home/YOURNAME/.themes, select all, cut everything out, then press CTRL+T to open a new tab... Type the address /usr/share/themes and paste the lot into there! Now do a quick (ALT+F2) gksu synaptic - and you should see your current theme applied to the root window also. Take care - if you use Nautilus as root now, it is not distinguished - but it will hold its own settings. Personally, I gave it a 'gnome footsteps' background to make it look different to my normal Nautilus. Last note - I found Softpedia has tons more/better themes than gnome- org. I now have a great selection. For cursors, Obsidian is my favourite, Silver (3d chrome animated) is second. For Themes, try out BlueHeart/BlueJoy, DarkCaramel, GBand-GTK2, Metal-0.6.1, Sunday, Muku, OS V (great border), Raptor, Slickness (normal and black, not brown) For window borders - there are one or two good wooden ones, the rest are trash. I mean GOOD. Best borders include XP Royale for running virtualbox, Thinner (no border), OS V, Moomex, MetaGrip, GBand GTK2, Future. There are a couple of others - but after 8 months working at it, I had maybe three favourites. After two days on Softpedia, I have 8 favourites. Don't fix the cursors - they work fine, the problems come with icons not installing correctly (folders often default to ugly gnome). ** Attachment added: "Nice Pine theme - what do you think?" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19509985/Wood%20light.png -- gcursor doesn't change mouse cursor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138491 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 174209] Re: Opera browser running very slow
I think it's related to the nonfree flash. Opera ran extremely well for me - very slightly more buggy than Firefox, but worth the patience. [Bug 290747] [NEW] Intrepid X11 Forwarding Not Working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ssh I'm using the Intrepid Release Candidate CD. The exact problem detailed below also exists on 8.04, 8.04.1, and all of the Intrepid Alpha releases. The problem described below does NOT exist on 7.10 (Gutsy). I've been using Gutsy for almost a year to connect to a Solaris 10 box running an X server. I type 'xhost +' then 'ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]'. When I type 'echo $DISPLAY' in the SSH session, it shows 192.168.1.1:0.0. I can then type 'firefox' and after a few seconds, a firefox X11 window will pop up. This is just one example, I use it for several X programs on the Solaris server. When I use my Gutsy laptop to connect to the Solaris server, everything works as expected. I can also connect from CygWin and MING clients on Windows. I am now booting into a fresh Intrepid Release Candidate installation. I type 'xhost +' then 'ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]'. I check my display variable in the SSH session and it's fine, the same as on the Gutsy server. However, when I go to run an X program, I get an X11 error. The actual error varies depending on the program I run, but they all boil down to the same root message: "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:" or "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.InternalError: Can't connect to X11 window server using '192.168.1.1:0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable." Ive tried changing the display variable to: --localhost:0.0 --localhost:10.0 --192.168.1.1:10.0 nothing seems to work. Any thoughts on how to fix this in Intrepid? Any idea what broke going from Gutsy to Intrepid (well, it broke first in Hardy, but continues to be broken in Intrepid)? I will attach several outputs. I have attached a log of my SSH session to this post. It shows what happens when I run: xhost + ssh -vvvX [EMAIL PROTECTED] /path/to/X11/program.sh the same exact process on Gutsy will start the X11 program. ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Intrepid X11 Forwarding Not Working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 290747] Re: Intrepid X11 Forwarding Not Working
I have solved my problem, and will post the steps here. I'm not sure if this should be considered a 'wishlist' item, or if this is just how the operating system is supposed to work -- but it's very frustrating that this option is buried. I've posted the related steps to the Ubuntu forums and hopefully others looking to forward X11 sessions to their Hardy/Intrepid guests will find this information useful. For those of you struggling with this in Hardy or Intrepid (I'm pretty sure this isn't necessary in Gutsy): The default install of both Hardy and Gutsy are almost completely ready to act as X11 guests (that is, you log into a *nix server from your Ubuntu desktop, run a command, and a GUI program appears on your Ubuntu machine). The only steps needed are: [B]Enable TCP connections to Xserver (only need to do this once) -System > Administration > Login Window -Click the Security tab -Uncheck 'Deny TCP connections to Xserver' -Restart the Ubuntu computer[/B] Enable xauth forwarding (do this only once per Ubuntu session) -Open a terminal -Type 'xhost +' and press Enter Connect to the server (do this for every SSH session, obviously) -Open a terminal -Type 'ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]' and press Enter Hope this saves some frustration! -- Intrepid X11 Forwarding Process Not Obvious to Enable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 290747] Re: Intrepid X11 Forwarding Not Working
I originally submitted this as a bug because I'm pretty sure the login window process wasn't necessary in Gutsy, but is now required in Hardy/Intrepid. I still feel that this process needs attention, or at least some official documentation that can be Google'd. Anyone looking to enable X11 forwarding and use their Hardy/Intrepid machine as a guest for X11 sessions would be hard pressed to find the checkbox buried in "system > administration > login screen > security". ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** bug changed to question: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+question/49389 ** Summary changed: - Intrepid X11 Forwarding Not Working + Intrepid X11 Forwarding Process Not Obvious to Enable -- Intrepid X11 Forwarding Process Not Obvious to Enable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 174209] Re: Opera browser running very slow
Hmmm amazing - I went to my /home/ben/ and renamed .opera to BACK.opera Next, restarted Opera (make sure you SYNCHRONISED first - or you'll lose the notes and stuff...) Then I started copying stuff back - the first symptoms I noticed were that changing SKINS made a big difference to tab switching! However, after putting all the files back (so that I don't even need to go to the opera wiki drag n drop site to get the buttons for 'inFF, InMoz or the menu/bookmark bar hider..) Now it's wickedly fast again. Must have been the .ini files or something - but it's back to normal. btw, I deleted flash9 and put flash10 on through synaptic, no problems here. -- Opera browser running very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 290747] Re: Intrepid X11 Forwarding Process Not Obvious to Enable
Dustin- Thank you for the reply. I'm using Hardy/Intrepid as the guest, not the host. So the scenario is you open a terminal on the Intrepid machine, run 'ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]' on the Intrepid machine, where 'host' is another Unix server (in my case Solaris 10). What I originally thought was a bug or deprecation of behavior is actually a setting that's buried in the Login Window security settings. By default, on a new installation, Hardy and Intrepid have the "Deny TCP connections to Xserver" setting checked. This prevents X11 programs on a foreign Unix host from appearing on your Ubuntu guest. The only reason I didn't ask to have this closed is after extensive googling, it is not obvious that this is the setting required to allow X11 sessions to be passed in to the Ubuntu guest. Once you unhceck this option, everything works as expected. I'm just hoping that documentation is updated (even if it is just people finding this bug report) that makes this setting more visible. I have also posted the steps on a related forum post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=778860&page=3 thanks again! -- Intrepid X11 Forwarding Process Not Obvious to Enable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/290747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
