Re: [Bug 319505] Re: In Jaunty Alpha3 release 32 bit and 64 bit versions the sound is not work.
If I downloading these modules, Orca and Espeak speaks correct my two machines, but another user writing this letter with Orca mailing list yesterday: "I tested alpha 3 too a few days ago. i had no sound too. no system or other sounds. tried it on a computer with a sb live 5.1 player sound card and on a laptop with a conexant chipset." Why need the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss modules? Sunday, I read this letter with Orca mailing list: "Hi Everyone For those wishing to install Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 3, I've encountered the following problem and workaround. This, for me, was preventing the boot-up accessibility option from working. Problem: Portaudio, on which espeak depends, is compiled to use OSS by default and, via padsp, is wrapped to using Pulseaudio. However, the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss modules required for oss output are not loaded, rendering espeak unable to speak. I'm unsure if this happens on all systems, but I've verified it on mine, and this issue is still present as of the most recent lived build. While padsp does wrap espeak to use pulse, it needs to be able to communicate with the oss device for it to do so, hense these modules need to be loaded. Solution: Once the livecd is booted up (note, these alpha builds do not seem to play a login sound) open gnome-terminal (alt+f2 followed by gnome-terminal). Issue the following command: sudo modprobe snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss Now, to test, issue the command: espeak hello Espeak should say hello. Now, run orca and go through the setup. When it asks you to log out, say no as this isn't working properly on the livecd, at least not for me. To log out manually, do the following (note: ctrl-alt-backspace is disabled so this shortcut won't work anymore to kill the X session): alt+f1, left arrow, down arrow, l, alt+l. The disk should spin and you should then get the drum sound, indicating that you are at the login prompt. Login with the username "ubuntu" without the quotes. press enter twice as this user has no password. From here on out, it is exactly like installing Ubuntu 8.10: envoke gnome-terminal, sudo su, start orca with --no-setup and run ubiquity. I hope this helps someone out. I'm unsure if all systems encounter this issue, but if you do encounter it hopefully this helps you get around the bug." I seeing another problem, but I don't know what the metter: When loading these modules, the espeak speech-sinthesizer and Orca screen reader (using gnome-speech espeak driver) very slow my machines (for example writing apple word, very later beginning spokening the letters (two or free seconds later, but apple word already written). Oldest Ubuntu versions (Hardy and Intrepid tested) not produces this simptoms. The success login sound is not played my machines. Another problem this workaround: When Orca is running, my desktop machine produces following cpu usages: I have got an Athhlon64 X2 3800 Mhz cpu and 2 GB ram, the first cpu usage is 28%, the second cpu usage is 17%, I think this is not good. If you would like test this problem, do following steps: 1. Download the current dayly live cd and try boot. After pressing enter key your preferred language, press f5 key, and choosing screen reader option. What happen if you not loading this two modules? If your machine producing my problems, Orca not speaking. And what happen if loaded and rerun Orca? My machine Orca is speaking this workaround, but producing wroted simptoms. Have any ydeas? Re: [Bug 319505] Re: In Jaunty Alpha3 release 32 bit and 64 bit versions the sound is not work.
I don't know what happen, but if I upgraded my Jaunty system, the Orca screen reader is not speaks. When I get the login prompt, the login signal I hear, and after writing username and password, the success login sound is good playing (little waves and not constant volume the sound). After this happen, Orca screen reader is don't speak. When I writing in a terminal with espeak hello command, espeak says good the hello text. I downloaded current dayly live cd (64 bit version and trying my desktop pc with following: 1. I choosed default language and pressed enter key. 2. Re: [Bug 328473] Re: [Jaunty] System/shutdown dialog are inaccessible with Orca screen reader.
I installed few hours ago the Jaunty Alpha-6 32 bit release with my Toshiba notebook, all updates are installed. The system/shutdown or logout dialogs is full accessible with Orca. But the 64 bit release my desktop machine (all updates are installed) the shutdown/logout dialogs are inaccessible. I using my desktop machine with Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha-6, 64 bit release. Interesting, but all alpha-6 Live cd's this dialogs correct speak with Orca screen reader. My friend using the 64 bit release he's Lenovo notebook. The shutdown/logout dialog speaks correct he machine, but if he working longer time the system, this dialogs are inaccessible with Orca. Luke, have any ydea how can fix this problem? Re: [Bug 208189] Re: Orca lose speech with hardyheron beta release
I will be testing Jaunty dayly release. The yesterday dayly live cd I seeing if the accessibility mode is selected, the pulseaudio service is disabled when I logged in the gnome session. pgrep pulseaudio does'nt produce a number, so I think pulseaudio is not run. This is right? I use Jaunty since Alpha3, so, Jaunty better and better the development period, and if I disabled pulseaudio with oldest Jaunty Alpha releases, this speech lost problem not produced Orca my free machines (my Desktop computer, my Toshiba Satelite L300 notebook and my Asus Eeepc701 netbook). If the pulseaudio disabled by default when the accessibility installation is choosed, this is the right way to solve this problem my free machines. Re: [Bug 328473] Re: [Jaunty] System/shutdown dialog are inaccessible with Orca screen reader.
Luke, I think this problem present only if I using the oldest sudoers file (your Hardy suggestion)? Now I see the live cd the second default row is changed by following line: Defaultsenv_keep = "ORBIT_SOCKETDIR XDG_SESSION_COOKIE GTK_MODULES" I replace the /etc/sudoers file second default line with this line and deleted the /root/.orbitrc file, and the shutdown dialog are works perfect with 64 bit release. I think this is the problem because not confirming another user with accessibility list this problem with Jaunty. For testing, I doing a clean installation with original cd, because very lot of think changed (the launched sudo applications is talking good). Please leave now open this bug if this is needed. Re: [Bug 328473] [NEW] [Jaunty] System/shutdown dialog are inaccessible with Orca screen reader.
Wilie Walker writing this answer my question with this problem: Hi Attila: I believe that patch is not what the GTK+ folks intended to be the solution. Instead, the third (the last) patch is the one to use, and is the one that has been committed. If it's not working, either a11y integration is broken in Ubuntu or some more work needs to be done. I suspect a11y integration may be broken on Ubuntu and they need to know about it: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535827#c30 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535827#c31 Can you contact Ubuntu, please, and try to work through this issue with them? Thanks! Will Possible solve this problem? I copyed two comment with bug 535227 (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535827#c30 and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535827#c31) did at-spi have a schema before? If it didn't, the ubuntu packager may forgotton to add gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule ... as a post installation step in the package. Can you confirm that the schema is installed by doing: gconftool-2 --get-schema-name /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk-modules/gail:atk-bridge If it's not installed it will yell. Could be there's a bug in GConf like Jens mentions as a possibility, too, though. Not sure. Comment #31 from Ray Strode (developer, points: 16 ) 2008-09-29 15:52 UTC [reply ] I'm guessing this is a packaging bug, because when I'm on a rawhide machine and I do: gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome_settings_daemono/gtk-modules (to undo the gconftool call from my test above) and then do gconftool-2 -R /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk-modules (which presumably does something similar to the g-s-d code) then I get: gnomebreakpad = true gail:atk-bridge = /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility which comes from the schemas and seems right.
