[Bug 228032] Re: firefox-3 doesn't provide a symlink libnspr4.so and libnss3.so

2008-07-02 Thread Andrew Conkling
Alexander, this bug is also triggered by attempting to use Mozilla's
Weave extension. See
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=442788.

Also see related bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nss/+bug/244439. Not sure how
everything works together, but it seems like there are two separate but
related bugs?

[Bug 306591] [NEW] Locale settings not respected in GNOME session

2008-12-09 Thread Andrew Conkling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

(Sorry about the package, not sure if this would be gnome-settings-
daemon or something else?)

Originally posted on the forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6287235.

I want to manually control my LC_TIME settings independent of my LANG,
so I...

1. Added 'export LC_TIME="en_DK.UTF-8"' (sans quotes) to my ~/.bashrc and my
~/.zshrc. (I use ZSH as my shell, but it didn't work if I switched to Bash
either.)
2. Start an application from GNOME Terminal or Run (e.g. `zenity --calendar`,
`date`): locale setting is used.
3. Start an application from the GNOME Panel, look at the Panel's date applet,
etc.: locale setting is not used.

Workaround: append 'LC_TIME="en_DK.UTF-8"' (sans quotes) to
/etc/environment, and the setting is used by all applications, no matter
how they are launched. (Thanks to Brucevdk on the forum for the tip!)

So it would seem that user-set locale settings are not being picked up
by GNOME properly.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 with GNOME 2.24 (gnome-settings-daemon 2.24.0-0ubuntu3.3).
(This is possibly related to bug 68938, but that's old and closed, so I'm
creating this new one rather than resurrecting that one.)

[Bug 305015] [NEW] linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic causes audio skips under CPU load

2008-12-03 Thread Andrew Conkling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic

Since upgrading to linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic, I get a lot of audio
skips while playing music when my computer is under load. Without
changing the rest of the configuration, booting into linux-
image-2.6.27-8-generic makes the skips go away.

To reproduce:
1. Play music (I tested in Rhythmbox and Banshee).
2. While playing, move a window across the screen for more than a second or two.
3. Also, opening an application (e.g. Firefox) or loading a Javascript-heavy
browser page (e.g. Gmail, Facebook) will trigger this as well. It corresponds
to CPU spikes in System Monitor.

Kernel bugs are not really new to me, so let me know what else I can do
to test/debug this.

Sorry I'm a bit late, but I think this was perhaps due to encoding of

anyway, but just for posterity. :)

[Bug 322781] Re: banshee doesn't save new last.fm stations

2009-03-09 Thread Andrew Conkling
Jonne,
I just sought clarification upstream, and apparently this was fixed after 1.4.3
also. It will be available in the first 1.5 release.

Also, "Fix Committed" does not imply any release in Ubuntu. (That status
is confusing to me since we're tracking the bug upstream already, but
there it is.)

In the meantime, it can be requested for a backport once it's released
(9.10?) or specifically patched to fix this bug, though I'm not sure how
the latter process works.

Right, which is why Banshee in Ubuntu is marked as Fix Committed (meaning
the fix has been committed to the source tree of the project—Banshee
itself.)

If we're talking about Banshee upstream, it

Launchpad tracks everything. So you'll see the Banshee line at the top,
which is coming from the upstream bug, marked Fix Released. The developers
use an external bugtracker, Bugzilla, and only see their bug as being fixed.
No frustration for them.

So if I want to have this thing fixed for me personally I'll just have

Yes, only if you want the fix in the immediate short-term. My guess is that
it will be fixed pretty quickly since it's been committed (the Banshee
maintainers do a great job packaging fixes and new versions).

If you're inclined to install the development version, you can find

recently I've noticed that my daemon.log and syslog files are over 1 GB
in a day.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, but I am attaching the most
recent 1000 lines of each log file.

[Bug 340401] Re: Import from Local Folder should allow you to select more than one folder to import from

2009-03-10 Thread Andrew Conkling
To use your original example, you should import the folder Desktop which
will capture all the folders you want.

> So shouldn't it be changed from "Local Folder" to "Local Folders" ?

Are you suggesting the wording doesn't reflect the current behavior? Or
are you suggesting an enhancement to the ability of Banshee, namely that
you could import multiple folders at once?

Thanks for the fast response! I am working remotely right now (only have VNC
access to my computer), so I couldn't do that at the moment, but does that
perhaps answer the question of whether vino is crashing? I have been using
it throughout the day to view my desktop (indeed, that's how I attached the
logs to this bug) so I know it's at least partially working. :)

That said, I'll send along any output as soon as I can.

[Bug 340515] Re: Consumes all CPU, logs a lot of output

2009-03-10 Thread Andrew Conkling
Okay, first of all, deactivating vino immediately brought my CPU back to
normal. So that's good; we know what caused the problem. :)

Here's the output from vino-server:
10/03/2009 21:36:07 Autoprobing TCP port in (all) network interface

10/03/2009 21:37:43 other clients:

It did not crash and, as you can see, I connected through Vinagre/Remote
Desktop Viewer.

I re-enabled vino in the Remote Desktop preferences and immediately the
CPU jumped. What's weird is that gconfd shows a pretty steady CPU usage;
gnome-session is around 2-3%, gconfd is at 1%. Related?

Not quite what happened. I had started vino-server manually, then quit it.
Then, separately, I re-enabled the automatic support that I had initially
disabled (via gconftool).

So: when starting vino manually, it works fine; when started through Remote
Desktop/gconf, it works but uses all the CPU.

Yes, quite sure. `ps -A | grep vino` returns nothing, but then immediately
enabling vino via gconf makes the CPU jump to 100%.

Thanks for filing upstream; I'll add my comment there also.

2008-10-16 Thread Andrew Conkling
Please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeBasedReleases which discusses
why Ubuntu schedules its releases this way and why it can't simply
deviate from that at users' whim. The timeline is unfortunate but (with
the exception of Dapper) completely predictable.
http://tinyurl.com/4wpnan outlines all the objections noted here, and
discusses specific answers to them.

Here's a hint: the timeline works and is a big reason a lot of people
prefer Ubuntu to other distributions.

This would be a good idea in general, and I've filed it upstream so that

dark themes (Darkilouche, Darklooks, High Contrast Inverse), however
I've filed a bug upstream
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558656) to see if anything
can be done about it.

For a similar issue in the past with the Human theme, see bug 237261.

[Bug 276809] Re: firefox crashed with SIGSEGV in getenv()

2008-10-22 Thread Andrew Conkling
Ruben, thanks for submitting your backtrace! However, it is missing
debug symbols. Did you install the *-dbgsym packages as listed on the
Mozilla Bugs page? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs#Crashes If
so, let us know; we may need to install some others that are causing
this crash.

Can anyone else also provide a backtrace so we can compare them?
