I just tried the jaunty alpha 5 i386 desktop live CD, and the bug is still there: any attempt to change the screen resolution still causes the display to be garbled as in the screenshots I attached earlier. [Bug 67152] WEP doesn't work when setting key using network-admin
Public bug reported: Summary: When configure a WEP key using network-admin, it is correctly displayed by iwconfig, yet WEP does not work. If I configure the exact same key using iwconfig, it works. This is with a D-Link DWL-G520 PCI 802.11g adapter under Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, with all packages up-to-date as of yesterday. I have reproduced this rather strange behavior several times. Here is what I do: Let's say my WEP key is c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977 (that's not my actual key, but it is in the same hex format). I choose System/Administration/Networking from the menu bar In the "Network settings" window, it says Wireless connection The interface ath0 is active I click "properties"; "the Interface properties" window pops up. The "Network name (ESSID)" setting shows multiple choices, one of which is the correct ESSID for my network ("gson"). I choose it. I leave "Key type" at its default of "Hexadecimal" In the "WEP key" box, I enter "c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977". I click "OK" A message window saying "Activating interface "ath0"" pops up and stays up for a long time, about 90 seconds. When it disappears, the "Network settings" window still says "The interface ath0 is active", but I have no DHCP lease and no connectivity. I try running "dhclient ath0" manually, but it also fails to get a lease. I run "iwconfig ath0". It prints: ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"gson" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0D:88:EB:BA:CA Bit Rate:36 Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=0/3 Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:C90F-EF44-1077-8EB1-E5E8-8359-77 Security mode:restricted Power Management:off Link Quality=16/94 Signal level=-79 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:1 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:7 I try setting the key manually from the command line with "iwconfig ath0 key c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977". I run "iwconfig ath0" again. It prints exactly the same output as last time, including the exact same key (I verified this using "diff"): ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"gson" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0D:88:EB:BA:CA Bit Rate:36 Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=0/3 Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:C90F-EF44-1077-8EB1-E5E8-8359-77 Security mode:restricted Power Management:off Link Quality=16/94 Signal level=-79 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:1 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:7 I again run "dhclient ath0" manually, and this time it gets a lease, even though the configuration according to "iwconfig ath0" is exactly the same as when it failed. [Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups
"Me too". I just spent half a day tracking down why my Django development server running under Feisty was taking 20 seconds to serve a simple web page to another machine on the same LAN, and finally tracked it down to this issue. Specifically, the client machine was on a private network (IP address 10.0.1.1) and the local DNS server was configured with an empty 10.in-addr.arpa.zone, causing it to return an NXDOMAIN response for the reverse mapping. The django server was calling gethostbyaddr() on the client address (10.0.1.1) for each HTTP request, and each gethostbyaddr() call took about about five seconds to complete. On my other, non-Ubuntu machines, it would return almost instantly (within a few milliseconds). When I changed the "hosts" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to hosts: files dns the problem went away - the page that took 20 seconds to load now loads in a small fraction of a second. It's not reasonable for the lack of a reverse mapping in the DNS to cause a long delay. On other operating systems, it simply causes the gethostbyaddr() call to quickly return with h_errno=HOST_NOT_FOUND, and Ubuntu should behave the same way. Long delays in gethostbyname() and gethostbyaddr() are of course to be expected if the DNS server is not responding, but that is not the case here - the server is responding quickly, but with an NXDOMAIN, indicating that no reverse mapping exists. -- mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94940 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups
I'm attaching a small C program to demonstrate the issue. It attempts to reverse map the address 255.0.0.0, which is within a reserved range and therefore does not have a reverse mapping. On my Feisty system, it takes about five seconds to run (with the unmodified /etc/nsswitch.conf). On my other systems, it runs in a small fraction of a second. ** Attachment added: "test3.c" http://librarian.launchpad.net/7618216/test3.c -- mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94940 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kaffeine-xine When I try to view video (for example, a DVD) using Kaffeine on my Ubuntu 7.04/i386 system, the image is transformed into horizontal lines, as if you took one pixel from each video line and duplicated it horizontally across the entire window. [Bug 152393] Re: Kaffeine reports assertion failure, displays horizontal lines
I figured out the cause of the problem. The X server is incorrectly reporting a physical screen dimension of 0x0 millimeters: $ xdpyinfo | grep -C1 millimeters screen #0: dimensions:640x480 pixels (0x0 millimeters) resolution:-2147483648x-2147483648 dots per inch This causes a division by zero when kaffeine tries to calculate the display aspect ratio in KXineWidget::initXine(), which in turn triggers the assertion failure and causes the corrupt display. Apparently the incorrect screen dimension is a known issue with the fglrx driver; see, for example, bug #134142. The attached patch makes kaffeine work again for me. ** Attachment added: "kaffeine.patch" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9991358/kaffeine.patch -- Kaffeine reports assertion failure, displays horizontal lines https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152393 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 147613] boinc_cmd --lookup_account doesn't work
Public bug reported: When I try to obtain an authenticator for attaching to the Rosetta project using boinc_cmd, instead of printing the authenticator, boinc_cmd just prints "retval: 0": $ boinc_cmd --lookup_account http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] password retval: 0 If I observe the generated network traffic using "tcpdump -s 1500 -A", I can see that an XML file containing the authenticator is in fact being returned by HTTP from boinc.bakerlab.org; it's just not getting printed by boinc_cmd. If I cut and paste the authenticator from the tcpdump output into the shell command line and run boinc_cmd --project_attach http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta authenticator (replacing "authenticator" with the actual hex string in the XML tag), my machine successfully attaches to the project. ** Affects: boinc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- boinc_cmd --lookup_account doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147613 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'd like to add that in 8.04, the screen no longer automatically reverts to its default resolution when you don't confirm the new resolution selection within a short timeout period. > Could this be a compiz problem, causing the X server to crash? Could well be. > Can you please try to get some log files, like Xorg.0.log? I tried, but without much luck. "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" didn't stop gdm, as you suspected. I also tried killing the gdm process (or processes, as ps showed a parent and child gdm process), as follows: On my first try, I just killed the parent gdm; this caused the X server to die immediately, leaving me in text mode but with no shell prompt. I switched to a different virtual console with alt-ctrl-f1; this one had a shell, and I typed "startx" at the shell prompt. This started an X server with the default stipple background and "X" cursor, but no Gnome desktop. Should I have run startx as root? On my second try, I killed both gdm processes by listing both on the "kill" command line. This caused the machine to lock up (the desktop remained visible, but did not respond to keyboard or mouse commands), and I had to reboot. [Bug 67152] Re: [network-admin] WEP doesn't work when setting key using network-admin
Trying the 8.04 live CD, it is still the case that the network does not work after configuring the WEP key using network-admin, even though many details of the user interface and program behavior have changed since I originally reported this as bug 67152. I am still using the same hardware. These are the steps I followed to reproduce the problem: Boot the 8.04 live CD Click on the network icon in the top menu bar Select "Manual configuration" Select "Wireless connection" Click "Properties" Disable roaming mode Network name: gson (my network ESSID) Password type: WEP key (hexadecimal) Network password: (my WEP key) Configuration: Automatic configuration (DHCP) Click OK After these steps, /etc/network/interfaces does contain the correct ESSID and WEP key for ath0, but according to "ifconfig ath0" and "iwconfig ath0", the ath0 interface has not been configured with that ESSID and key. If I then manually run "/etc/init.d/networking restart", the interface gets configured correctly and starts working. Also, if after clicking on the networking icon I don't select "Manual configuration" but instead simply select my network from the list of detected networks and follow the dialogs from there, I end up with a working configuration without having to manually run "/etc/init.d/networking restart". -- [network-admin] WEP doesn't work when setting key using network-admin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67152 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 138084] [gutsy tribe 5] Screen goes blank booting live CD
Public bug reported: When I boot the Gutsy Tribe 5 i386 desktop CD on an MSI RS482M4 motherboard, connecting the VGA output of the on-board graphics adapter to an iiyama ProLite E380s 1024x768 LCD display, I can see the initial menu offering to "Start or install Ubuntu" as the default option. When I choose the default, a progress bar is displayed for about one minute as the OS loads from the CD. Then the monitor on-screen display shows the message ATTENTION NO SIGNAL PLEASE CHECK INPUT SIGNAL GO TO SLEEP!! for a few seconds, the screen goes blank, and the monitor power LED turns from blue to yellow indicating a power-saving mode. However, if I then go to Preferences / Screen resolution and select one of the other resolutions offered, 800x600 or 640x480, the picture disintegrates into diagonal lines reminiscent of the picture you would get if you lose horizontal sync on a CRT. The effect is otherwise similar to the screenshot in bug #133192, but in my case, the mouse cursor is not shown normally but disintegrates along with the rest of the picture. When the screen reverts to to its original 1024x768 resolution as a result of me not confirming the new resolution setting, the picture is once again normal. lspci identifies the graphics chipset as: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200] ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [gutsy tribe 5] Changing screen resolution garbles display https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
