[Bug 197659] Re: Cheese doesn't detect my webcam

2008-08-25 Thread Albert Vilella
this happens to me as well. The test works:

gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ximagesink .

But cheese won't recognize my camera. Skype works fine as well. cheese
--verbose doesn't even find the camera, shows up nothing...

[Bug 301069] [NEW] error partition process stalls during installation

2008-11-22 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

I am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on an old Acer Aspire 1300 series
laptop and all the tries end up with the process locking at the:

Partitions formatting
5%

before reaching completion. I tried formatting the whole hard-drive
through the live CD before starting the installation, then proceed with
it, but it always stalls at some point during the install.

Any ideas?

[Bug 302626] [NEW] brigthness menu popup gets stuck in screen

2008-11-26 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

When changing the brightness levels in Ubuntu 8.10, the portion of the
screen corresponding to the popup of the brightness level gets stuck in
the screen, masking what is underneath it. This only happens when
changing the brightness level after replugging the power supply in the
laptop that was running on battery, and gnome-power-manager updating the
plugged state.

[Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2009-01-29 Thread Albert Vilella
** Description changed:

  http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258304

Hybrids with the Ability to turn off the 3d chip:

AMD/ATI calls it PowerXpress and Nvidia HybridPower. It uses 2 graphics
cards, one energy efficient with little 3d power and the other for gaming (fast
and uses more/a lot of power), the user can choose which chip to use.
This is not a new concept. Sony has build in 2 graphics chips into some of
their laptops for years. In the past a reboot was required to switch between
the chips. With the new generation it is possible to change between chips on
the fly, the screen will flicker but no need to reboot. At least in Windows
Vista (XP, Linux not supported) the user can switch freely between the chips or
set up a profile to do so automatically (eg when on battery use low power chip
and when plugged in use the more powerful chip).

The graphic card hybrid not only works with two Nvidia or AMD cards but
the low power Intel graphics solutions (mostly shard memory) can also be
combined with 3d chips from AMD or Nvidia. This solution is ideal for
users who want maximum battery life and be able to play current games.
The most likely combination is Intel shard memory graphics card for
battery life and some low to mid level 3d chip. This will not give great
3d performance but enable you to play some games.

Limitations are the drivers. Special drivers are needed depending on
which graphic chips are combined in the hybrid. This will most likely
make you depended on the Notebook manufactures driver support. It is
uncertain if 3rd party drivers (such as laptopvideo2go) will be usable.

The following notebooks have Nvidia hybrid graphics (as seen on the link

[Bug 348043] Re: [jaunty] Screen brightness is minimal until login

2009-06-16 Thread Albert Vilella
Tt looks like you have a computer with a hybrid graphics card for which
we still don't have enough information: could you please submit your
DSDT.dsl information as an attachment to this bug report?

http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756

To compile your DSDT information, install if you haven't already the acpidump
and iasl tools:
sudo apt-get install acpidump iasl

Then run the following commands:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt
sudo acpixtract acpidump.txt
iasl -d DSDT.dat

This will create a DSDT.dsl file that you can attach to the bug report.
This information will allow the developers to fully implement the hybrid
graphics features for Linux.

Finally, for posting the information in the bug report, you can check
the model and generation identifier for your computer with this
command:
sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
And the model of the graphics card/s with this command:
lspci | grep VGA

2009-02-25 Thread Albert Vilella
Just to give more info, the window will appear in the screen where the
mouse was at the moment of trying back to access the locked screen. If
the mouse was on the external screen, it will appear there. If one types
"Esc" and brings the mouse to the other screen and tries to access the
computer again, the window will switch to the other screen.

The problem is that users may not realize this is happening and will not
find the solution easily

Re: [Bug 358547] Re: nautilus overrides focus when swapping between main and secondary screen

2009-05-17 Thread Albert Vilella
yes, it still happens in jaunty, using LiveCD. It's nautilus that is a
problem:

I download 2 images from the web into my Desktop. I open a web browser that
occupies most of the desktop space but where the images are, then
double-click on the first of them, eog stays on top of the browser,
double-click the second one, new eog stays on top of browser and first
image.

Now I open a nautilus window and go to Desktop. Double-click on the first
image, eog stays on top of the browser. Double-click on the second image,
and it's hidden behind the nautilus window.

[Bug 284312] [NEW] shifted windows after xrandr commands

2008-10-16 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

After using xrandr to change the window layout from a two monitor
display to a one monitor display and back to a two monitor display, the
tooltip windows (alternative text) and suggestion list windows in
firefox will appear in the alternate window space than where the firefox
window is.

To reproduce (see attached xorg.conf):

A laptop with an external screen. Plug the screen to the laptop, then:

xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS

Then unplug, then:

xrandr --output VGA --off

then back to two screens:

xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS

Place the open firefox window on the right-hand side screen space
(laptop monitor). When typing the URL, the suggestion list will appear
in the left-hand side screen space (external monitor), as well as the
tooltip windows when mouse over a link or image.

[Bug 235754] [NEW] strange glyphs when selecting text

2008-05-29 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Hi,

When I select text in a file that comes from pdflatex, the selected (greyed)
text turns into strange glyphs, a combination
of random uppercase letters and squares.

I can paste the selected text, but it looks ugly (my document is in a
non-english, accentuated language)

[Bug 259053] [NEW] unresponsive external keyboard and mouse

2008-08-18 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

I made a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 on my laptop and the external USB mouse
and keyboards are now unresponsive
when there is some load on the system.
For example, when Firefox is loading a website, just at the moment the website
is rendered, if I try to move the external usb mouse around the screen, it will
stop moving and disappear, then once the website is rendered, will be working
again. The same happens if I try to type. If I try the same with the mousepad,
it will work just fine. This is using the Intel graphics driver.

[Bug 259053] Re: unresponsive external keyboard and mouse

it turns out that the unresponsiveness is related to the wireless drivers for
the Intel 3945 device. By keeping a terminal with:
 tail -f /var/log/messages

every time a new line error/warning line like these ones is added, the
laptop will be unresponsive:

[Bug 312756] [NEW] support graphics card hot switch

2008-12-31 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

Some of the latest laptop models offer the possibility to use an
integrated graphics card for longer battery usage (usually Intel) and/or
a discrete graphics card for more power-hungry 3D features (usually
Nvidia). These two configurations can be hot-switched in some models
under Windows, but not under Linux.

One of the models is the Sony Vaio Z series. Right now, both cards are
visible under Linux, but there is no wat to hot-switching-off (if that
is a word...) the Nvidia card. For a summary of users' experimentation
with this laptop and Linux, see:

Tried /tmp/evil.txt with version 2.24.2-0ubuntu1, it will not open the

file, it will choke for a while due to the RAM requirements. Once
digested, evolution won't crash but will be slow due to the swapping.

[Bug 321425] [NEW] Main and embedded Linux interaction in laptops

2009-01-26 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

The Dell Latitude E4200/E4300 models come with a Dell Latitude Instant
ON function. The function relies on an mini-pci embedded secondary
processor and its own dedicated Linux OS. There is the possibility of
making the main Linux OS interact with the embedded Linux OS system, but
there could be.

One fairly obvious feature would be to allow for data sync from the main
system to the embedded system.

[Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2009-01-14 Thread Albert Vilella
A bit of an extended explanation found here:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258304

Hybrids with the Ability to turn off the 3d chip:

AMD/ATI calls it PowerXpress and Nvidia HybridPower. It uses 2 graphics cards,
one energy efficient with little 3d power and the other for gaming (fast and
uses more/a lot of power), the user can choose which chip to use.

This also happens to me with exactly the same symptoms: slowly dimming,
unresponsive function controls, then brighten again on it's own without
any sort of user input or after a delay of a few seconds. This is on
different hardware: a Sony Vaio SZ1XP laptop.

[Bug 336676] [NEW] igoogle image artifact when in external monitor

2009-03-02 Thread Albert Vilella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When using the external monitor for the laptop, every time I click on a
google reader news with an image on the iGoogle applet, the image in the
bubble bounces by about 10 pixels left and right for 6 times in about 2
seconds in the rectangle corresponding to the other widget below (see
samsung logo shifted to the right in the image link below).

This doesn't happen if the image is not overlapping the other applet
behind, or if there is no image, only text in the overlapping area, or
if I use the main laptop screen instead of the external screen.

[Bug 346201] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion tx2500 Notebook PC] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: fglrx]

2009-03-24 Thread Albert Vilella
If you've got a HP Pavilion tx2500 and you have tried to use Linux on it, you
may have noticed that there are issues with the hybrid graphics setup. To help
improve the Linux hybrid graphics support for this laptop, please attach your
DSDT information to this Launchpad bug report specifying your laptop model:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756

To compile your DSDT information, install if you haven't already the acpidump
and iasl tools:
sudo apt-get install acpidump iasl # on Debian-based systems

Then run the following commands:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt
sudo acpixtract acpidump.txt
iasl -d DSDT.dat

This will create a DSDT.dsl file that you can attach to the bug report.
This information will allow the developers to fully implement the hybrid
graphics features for Linux.

[Bug 45223] Re: Sleep not present in Dapper 6.06

2006-08-08 Thread Albert Vilella
BIOS version: R0063N0
EC BIOS version: RK063N0
Video BIOS version: N0ICG_12

identical BIOS. Suspend-to-ram is almost perfect:

Suspend to RAM (sleep) works if using the Intel (Stamina) chip. Simply
choose suspend on gnome-power-manager (i.e., the battery in the top
panel) or configure it with the "lid close".

To wake up, just press any key.

(1) Sometimes the wireless won't hook up again after wake up. Apparently
this is due to the device losing the essid record. So if stuck, try:

sudo iwconfig eth1 essid "youressid"

sudo dhclient eth1

(change eth1 for the name of your device)

(2) Every once in a while, if you let the laptop to sleep for a long
time, for example during the night (notice the irony?, sleep... during
the night... :)), it won't wake up properly: black screen, unresponsible
keyboard, even Alt-SysRq-RSEIUB won't restart the screen properly.

And sometimes the trick is to plug/unplug the power source. Weird, I
know.

(3) There is a problem with the touchpad scrolling after sending the laptop to
sleep:

Does anybody know how can I re-setup this gdm/gnome thing?

Any other information I can provide?

[Bug 38865] Re: sky2 driver freezing system after ifdown and ifup

2006-08-30 Thread Albert Vilella
Hi all,
I've successfully compiled and installed sk98lin.
I added sky2 to the blacklist.
I've added sk98lin to /etc/modules.
After boot up, sk98lin is loaded and sky2 is not.
But no eth0 device appears: I don't know how to bring up the interface.

Stupid as it may seem... How do I bring up the eth0 interface? Where is
sk98lin hooked up to a eth0?

Then it gets stuck and unresponsive at:
