it's clear enough what it does (it produces a mirror image) and we like

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-06-10 Thread Adam Dingle
@coffeemonk,
Thanks for your feedback, and no worries - we like hearing what our users
really want. :) Clearly you'd like Shotwell to be able to store tags inside
RAW files. I think that would be great, though as I mentioned above there are
some technical challenges above. In particular, the exiv2 library used by
Shotwell can't yet write metadata into many RAW formats. That may change,
though; for example, there's a feature request to extend exiv2 to write
metadata into Canon RAW CR2 files and it looks as if it may be implemented soon
(see http://dev.exiv2.org/issues/show/635). In any case, I hope we can add
this capability to Shotwell at some point.

By the way, F-Spot can't write metadata into RAW files either (at least
not into CR2 files, which I just tried).

@Bruno,
I agree: it would be great to give this user this option. When we begin
development of Shotwell 0.7 in a couple of weeks we'll think about this as a
possibility.

[Bug 579808] Re: Update image file with editing operations (store backups elsewhere)

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
It's debatable whether this feature request is desirable in this form.
On the Shotwell mailing list, I posted a few weeks back asking where
Shotwell should store modified copies:

http://lists.yorba.org/pipermail/shotwell/2010-April/000283.html

A couple of users responsed and said that they did *not* want Shotwell
to touch their original files.

Currently, as you may know, Shotwell does not store modified copies of
photos anywhere (it simply applies any user edits to the master photo on
the fly each time it needs to display a photo). We are considering
storing modified copies somewhere, however - this is
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1798 (which will probably not make 0.6,
however). One compromise is to store modified copies in the same
directory as the original files with a suffix such as "(modified)".
This is what F-Spot does. Would this be acceptable to you?

[Bug 579804] Re: Use EXIF data for tags

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
To be a bit more precise, existing photo collections' tags (i.e.
keywords) are normally stored in IPTC and/or XMP data (EXIF can't really
hold keyword data). The trunk build of Shotwell can now read IPTC/XMP
keywords from photo files; these become Shotwell tags after an import.
So this feature will be present in 0.6.

It's true that we have a ticket (#1290) for storing Shotwell tags in
photo files. We're currently debating, however, whether Shotwell will
do this on the fly or only when the user exports photos explicitly.
We're currently leaning toward writing tags out only during an export
operation, because if we always store tags in photo files then tagging
becomes a relatively expensive operation. A user might quite reasonably
want to apply a tag to 100 photos, but if we need to write that tag to
100 10 Mb photo files then now we need to write 1 Gb of disk data in
order to apply the tag (since we may need to rewrite an entire photo
file in order to insert a new tag into it).

Some other photo programs (e.g. Picasa) do, however, write tags out on
the fly; others (e.g. iPhoto, Aperture) do not. F-Spot gives the user
the option whether to do this.

[Bug 580012] Re: No option to choose location of photo library

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
Yes - we would like to implement this in some way. There are a couple
of possibilities on the table:

1. Allow the user to specify a library directory where photos get
imported; this might be a directory other than the XDG Pictures
directory. This is http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1075 .

2. Allow the user to change the location of the XDG Pictures directory
directly within Shotwell. This is http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/898 .

We probably don't want both.

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
If we do decide to keep tags up to date in photo files, we will
absolutely update them via a background task: we certainly don't want to
make users wait while that happens! :)

There's another question here: if we do keep tags in photo files, we
need to decide whether to update master photo files when photos are
tagged, or to create a modified copy of each master solely for the
purpose of holding the tags, even if there are no changes to the image
itself. It seems wasteful to copy the files just to hold tags: this
will double the library size if every file is tagged. But, again, some
users might think that the master files are sacred and might not want
even tags written there.

[Bug 579808] Re: Update image file with editing operations (store backups elsewhere)

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
Another factor to consider is that starting with version 0.6, Shotwell
will allow the user to import RAW files from cameras. If the user edits
a RAW photo in Shotwell, we cannot update the RAW file with those
changes; only cameras can write RAW data. So even if we go with
approach (B) above, for every RAW master file all changes would need to
be written to a separate JPEG photo file, presumably in the same
directory as the RAW master.

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-05-13 Thread Adam Dingle
Another factor to consider here: starting with Shotwell 0.6 the user can
import RAW photos from cameras. The exiv2 library can't write metadata
into most RAW formats (run "man exiv2" to see a list of formats and the
metadata which can be read/written into them). Writing metadata into a
RAW file is considered slightly risky even when using programs such as
Aperture; see http://aperture.maccreate.com/2010/02/10/write-iptc-
metadata-to-masters/ for a discussion, for example.

So if a photo is RAW, we can't realistically keep up-to-date metadata in
the photo file; we can only store it in the Shotwell database and/or a
parallel JPEG file generated from the RAW photo.

Perhaps someday camera manufacturers will converge on a single RAW
format where software can easily update metadata; DNG is the best hope
for that. That day is probably far off, though.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-12-12 Thread Adam Dingle
I think that the upstream bug

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/878

may not be the same issue.

This bug has "X11" in the title, and so it really refers to behavior
under X11. On Ubuntu 19.10, if I run an X11 session then
copying/pasting fails very often, especially in LibreOffice. For this
reason I switched to Wayland several weeks ago. Under Wayland,
copying/pasting still fails occasionally, but far less often. I saw
copy/paste failures dozens of times per day under X11, and now they
happen maybe once or twice per day in Wayland (with intensive use of
LibreOffice in both cases).

In a comment in the mutter bug linked above, Carlos Garnacho wrote

This is wayland specific.

So it is unclear to me that the patches linked there (which are to both
GTK and mutter) will fix the problem in X11. Has anyone tried to
reproduce this copy/paste problem after applying these patches under
X11?

Note that Nautilus does not ask "Are you sure?" when you delete a file.

saying that the file was deleted, along with an Undo button.

So if the goal is for the desktop to behave like Nautilus, then the
desktop should not ask "Are you sure?" either.

[Bug 1901150] Re: No "Are you sure?" question when deleting something from Desktop

2020-10-26 Thread Adam Dingle
Adam Niedling: That's a long story. Very briefly, about 2 years ago the
GNOME project, which develops Nautilus, decided to remove support for
desktop icons from Nautilus, controversially:

  https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/01/gnome-desktop-icons-removed-3-28

Ubuntu still wants desktop icons, so it needs to implement them in some
other way, and so it uses the Desktop Icons shell extension.

As Paddy mentioned above, there is a newer version of Desktop Icons
called Desktop Icons NG, which is under active development:

  https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng

I myself run Desktop Icons NG too. It is still a long way from having
all the functionality of Nautilus, but it is slowly getting better.

I also hope that Ubuntu will switch to Desktop Icons NG sooner or later.

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-07-04 Thread Adam Dingle
As some of you have noticed, the status for "Mutter" at the top of this
page changed to "Fix Released". That's because a change was just
committed to the Mutter GNOME project that apparently fixes the
underlying bug:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/2f1f47d25708cf444e4d35045486fa2841ce0d69

This change is not present in Mutter 3.36.3 or in any other release of
Mutter. It should be included in the next Mutter release (presumably
3.36.4).

So it is not yet available in Ubuntu, which is why the status for
"Mutter (Ubuntu)" at the top of the page is still "Confirmed".

In other words, a fix is now in Mutter (which is great news), and
hopefully it will make its way to Ubuntu before long. But it's not
there yet.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) with LibreOffice is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-18 Thread Adam Dingle
Tim and others: It is certainly possible to install just this upgraded
mutter package without installing all the other pending updates in
proposed. See the page

   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Follow the instructions in the section "Selective upgrading from
-proposed". That's what I did, since I didn't want to risk
destabilizing my system by installing anything I didn't have to.

A brief update: I am still running with the proposed mutter package on
Ubuntu 20.04, and hae seen this copy/paste problem occur several more
times in the last few days. I continue to believe that the new mutter
is an improvement, but that the bug has not been fixed completely.

[Bug 1879968] [NEW] copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183.
The bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug occur
much less frequently.

Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce.
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 and have the new 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Write windows side by
side, and repeatedly selected some text in the left window, copied it,
then attempted to paste it into the right window. In my experiment,
approximately 1 in every 20 paste operations failed: it did not paste
the text that was just copied, but instead the text that was copied
before that.

Now, an error rate of 1 in 20 may not seem so bad. On the other hand,
if you spend all day writing a document and copy and paste dozens of
times during the day, then you may hit this bug multiple times per day
(as I have been recently), which is a significant annoyance.

I tested in LibreOffice since that is where I have seen the bug most
often, but I have also seen it occur in other applications as well.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) with LibreOffice is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
It's nice to see that the mutter fix has landed in focal-updates.

Above, Daniel wrote "Let's try to release this fix and then the first
person still having problems after it's released can open a new bug."
OK - I am that person. I have the new Mutter package, and I can still
easily reproduce the problem. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer
windows side by side and tried repeatedly copying in the left window and
pasting in the right window, and occasionally the paste visibly fails to
paste the text I just copied.

So I have opened a new bug, namely bug #1879968. If other people
experience copy/paste trouble even after they receive the mutter fix,
just like I have, then that bug is the right place for further
discussion.

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
Davide, that's a very interesting discovery that every other copy/paste
fails when you use the menu caommands. I see that on my machine too.
Hopefully that will make it easier to debug the problem, since it is a
much more direct way to reproduce the problematic behavior.

(On the other hand, there is no guarantee that this copy/paste failure
with menu commands is actually the same bug as the occasional copy/paste
failures when you use keyboard shortcuts, since the observed behavior is
pretty different.)

[Bug 1844808] Re: Can't delete file from desktop by clicking it and hitting delete key

2020-05-08 Thread Adam Dingle
This bug still exists in Ubuntu 20.04. It's particularly insidious
because it's easy to delete a file by mistake: if a Nautilus window has
focus and you click on a desktop icon and press the Delete key, then
Nautilus will delete the file (which you might or might not notice).

2020-05-14 Thread Adam Dingle
Hi Daniel - I'm the one who first reported this Launchpad bug back in
November. :) I'm very happy to see that there is a proposed fix, since
I (like many others) have continued to experience this bug on a daily
basis for many months now. I appreciate your asking my opinion, though
it certainly should not be the only one that counts here.

I am running Focal (20.04) and I just installed the proposed
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 package. I'll need to run with it for a day or
two before I'll have an opinion about whether the fix is adequate. Keep
fingers crossed. :)

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-17 Thread Adam Dingle
Once again I am the original reporter - Daniel recently asked for my
opinion about whether this bug has been fixed.

I have now been running with the proposed 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
package for three days, during which I have done a fair amount of
editing with copying and pasting. During that time I saw this
copy/paste bug occur twice: once on 5/16 when I couldn't copy and paste
from Epiphany (a web browser) to gedit, and once on 5/17 when I couldn't
copy and paste from a LibreOffice Writer window into another LibreOffice
Writer window.

My opinion is that the proposed fix is a definite improvement, because I
am sure that without it I would have seen more copy/paste failures these
last few days. However I believe that the bug is still not completely
fixed.

[Bug 1826633] [NEW] default document text font on Disco is None

2019-04-27 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 19.04 (Disco), the default Document Text font after

Zesty has version 4.10.0 of the Linux kernel and yes, it appears that
BLCR supports only up to 3.7.1, as mentioned at

http://crd.lbl.gov/departments/computer-science/CLaSS/research/BLCR/

So yes, presumably the BLCR packages should be removed altogether, at
least until BLCR is updated to support more modern kernels.

The solution in comment #1 fixed this for me as well. I'm running 17.04
and am hosting a hotspot on a ThinkPenguin Wireless N USB Adapter. It
didn't work until I applied this workaround.

[Bug 1670959] Re: systemd-resolved using 100% CPU

2017-06-12 Thread Adam Dingle
I've also run into this CPU problem on 17.04. Like tlk, I had to
install dnsmasq because I'm running a hotspot on a USB wifi device, and
the system log indicated that it wouldn't work unless dnsmasq is
installed.

[Bug 1670959] Re: systemd-resolved using 100% CPU

2017-06-12 Thread Adam Dingle
It seems that the problem is that dnsmasq is forwarding DNS queries to
the systemd-resolved stub server, but they are incompatible in some
way:. From /var/log/syslog:

Jun 12 17:05:34 sparkly dnsmasq[1177]: using nameserver 127.0.0.53#53
Jun 12 17:05:49 sparkly dnsmasq[1177]: Maximum number of concurrent DNS queries
reached (max: 150)

As a workaround, I edited /etc/dnsmasq.conf and added these lines to
tell it to ignore resolve.conf and hardcoded my ISP's DNS servers
instead:

no-resolv
server=75.75.75.75
server=75.75.76.76

It seems to work: I'm running a hotspot on a USB wifi device and it's
working fine, and there's no sign of the CPU trouble.

[Bug 1627769] Re: limits.conf not applied

2017-05-25 Thread Adam Dingle
Apparently Fedora has wrestled with this too:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1364332

The last comment there
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1364332) seems to indicate
that this has been fixed in Fedora 26, which has systemd 233.

I'm running Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty with systemd 232 and am still seeing this
problem. Perhaps systemd 233 will solve the problem for Ubuntu as well?

[Bug 1627769] Re: limits.conf not applied

2017-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
OK - I was finally able to get this working in 17.04 after more
experimentation, which revealed the following caveats:

- Ubuntu will respect limits you put in /etc/security/limits.conf (or
/etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf), but **only after a reboot**.
Logging out and back in are not sufficient to trigger a change. I
suspect that rebooting only became necessary after the recent transition
to systemd.

- Limits in /etc/systemd/user.conf are applied after logging out and in.

- I've only been able to change NOFILE (the max number of open files) by
editing /etc/systemd/system.conf and then rebooting (logging out/in is
not enough). Setting this value in user.conf or limits.conf seems to
have no effect.

This bug is still a major annoyance. It would be really nice to solve

GNOME has recently removed the desktop code from Nautilus, so it seems
very unlikely that this will be solved upstream. So presumably someone
from Canonical or a community volunteer will need to fix this.

https://www.bountysource.com/issues/1072092-restore-type-ahead-find

If enough people chip in, perhaps someone will be motivated to provide a
patch that restores type-ahead find as it once was. :)

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-11-11 Thread Adam Dingle
To be clear, the term "fork" usually refers to a split in development
that no longer merges in changes from the other side, which is not what
I'm proposing here. Instead, I'm hoping that if we had a patch to
restore type-ahead find, Ubuntu would include and maintain it just as it
already maintains various patches for other GNOME programs. The patch
might not be trivial, but maybe it wouldn't be that hard to maintain
once it's been written once.

Of course, I don't work for Ubuntu, so only they can say whether they
would actually accept a patch like this. But in comment #22 above,
Sebastien (who works for Canonical) wrote "for the record we do agree
that this bug is annoying and would like to fix, we just need to deal
with what we have". Given that, I'm hopeful that they would take a
patch.

[Bug 1057019] Re: No format option for devices in Nautilus

2013-09-08 Thread Adam Dingle
I think this bug no longer applies to the current version of Nautilus
(3.8.2 in Ubuntu 13.10). In that version, the Computer page lists files
in the root directory of my hard drive. Devices are shown only in the
sidebar. If I right click a device there, there is a Format... option
in the context menu.

I recommend marking this bug invalid.

2013-09-08 Thread Adam Dingle
I'm running gnome-disk-utility 3.6.1 on Ubuntu 13.10.

I see this same error whenever I try to format any USB drive at all.
Perhaps all of my USB drives already have partition tables. In any
case, the format command should be able to format any disk, no matter
what is on it already.

[Bug 1223304] [NEW] [needs-packaging] please package libevdev

2013-09-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

libevdev is a wrapper library for evdev devices. It moves the common
tasks when dealing with evdev devices into a library and provides a
library interface to the callers, thus avoiding erroneous ioctls, etc.

URL: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/libevdev/
License: BSD-like (Red Hat)

[Bug 1084960] Re: 10de:0de1 [GeForce GT 430] Resume from Standby mode doesn't work with Nouveau

2013-08-17 Thread Adam Dingle
I'm running Nouveau on Ubuntu 13.10 on a MacBookPro9,1 with a GeForce GT
650 M. 13.10 now has this kernel:

$ uname -a
Linux cloth 3.11.0-2-generic #5-Ubuntu SMP Mon Aug 12 16:09:51 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Unfortunately I still can't resume from suspend: I see the same symptoms
that Jan described above. So I don't believe this was fixed in the 3.10
kernel as madbiologist suggested above.

[Bug 1641740] [NEW] gnome-calendar needs an Ubuntu-style title bar

2016-11-14 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

On both 16.10 (Yakkety) and 17.04 (Zesty), gnome-calendar has no Ubuntu-
style title bar displaying the name of the program. So it looks
inconsistent with other applications on the Ubuntu desktop. What's
more, if I set the option "Show the menus for a window" to "In the
window's title bar" in the Appearance control panel, then the top-level
menu in gnome-calendar is no longer available at all.
