2024-12-29 Thread Venca B Spam

During boot process unable to enter full disk encryption password .

The system boots as normal. When it prompts for /home password, it is
possible to enter the password for 1 second, but then it blinks, shows
the same prompt, but it is no longer possible to enter the password.

The system is Kubuntu 24.04.

[Bug 2092674] [NEW] Linux Ubuntu on Dell 7020 fails to boot

2024-12-29 Thread Geoff Johnson
Public bug reported:

Message "no boot device found" happens on startup, which goes no further.
Received and ran an update yesterday (28th December 24) rebooted, and the
machine ran OK for rest of day.
This morning, startup failed with the "no boot device found" message.
Managed to get it via F5 into a diagnostic ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment,
which checked the whole machine out and reported all components as working as
per normal. All tests passed.
Ask: could this be a virus (thought none on Linux) or some corrupted startup
file?

Btw: how am I sending this? Extracted old grandad Windows XP machine,
hand-built in Billingshurst, and can get basic Email and some news
sites, but no YouTube at all, and Ebay thinks I am a bot, nowt else.

Please advise if I need a virus-check, or a recovery CD/USB or whatever.

Many thanks, Geoff. Johnson

[Bug 1922414] Re: Xorg scripts fail with "has_option: command not found"

2024-12-29 Thread Mélodie
Hello,

I am meeting with the same errors in my ~/.xsession-errors file, against
files belonging to x11-common. Here is what I get:

/etc/X11/Xsession.d/30x11-common_xresources: lign 16: has_option : command not
found
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/75dbus_dbus-launch: lign 9: has_option : command not found
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90x11-common_ssh-agent: lign 9: has_option : command not
found

I noticed all recent x11-common packages have the same version number :
in Noble, in Oracular, and in Plucky: 1:7.7+23ubuntu3

A fix would be nice. Thanks for your work!

[Bug 1225612] Re: Lack of packaged 3D Printing Software

2024-12-29 Thread hifron
Blender needs its fully Foundation and industry coverage, not a few
persons foundation take and when there are a lot of plugins but also
patents in place, something more is needed and that's is some Foundation
making progress and direction backed by real industry and corporate
sponsors maybe even donating some patents or take some grants from
corporations which make industry more appealing of it if industry agrees
of such approach(there are dominant players, but)...

And fully working ecosystem is also missing piece - seems weird in today
verse-world with a tons of programs somehow related also with 3d models
and its studios and game companies full of them and selling them on
their own pages for specific purposes... including patent ones models or
in specific CAD or movie worlds usages or in some industry including 3d
prints... with own programs and some of them are paid or other
appropriate usage also is maybe crucial including lawyers thought...

so not appropriate to have some versions on ppa when there is mostly
only mac/windows version, maybe AppImage maybe - thats not so
complicated but some flavour like Studio is not the default option and
seems problematic with a so huge list of options... but AppImage as side
project...

and cups is also missing driver applications on not so standardized
Space outside traditional vendors...

a lot of happens but not probably on this bug...

[Bug 1103833] Re: Wine's icon and description appears for all Windows applications

2024-12-29 Thread Paul White
After reviewing the Paper Cuts bug (eight year on) I'm seeing that the
Wine tasks are fixed, the Unity tasks are 'Incomplete' and the Paper
Cuts task is shown as being 'Triaged'.

I'm removing the Paper Cuts task and closing the Unity tasks as
'Invalid' which would have expired long ago had it not been for other
tasks being present.

Please create a new bug report for any new or outstanding issues, thank
you.

activity for some time. If this is still an issue when using a currently
maintained release of Ubuntu then please let us know which one(s)
otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days

[Bug 1705011] Re: If "Failure to download extra data files" fails, the error message disappears too fast

2024-12-29 Thread Paul White
I'm not seeing any release information in this bug report.

1) Does it refer to a release that is no longer supported?
2) Does the reference to 'flashplugin-installer' also suggest an EOL release?
3) Developers, who can fix issues, need release information.

Is this report still valid (for currently supported releases) and the
packages that they include?

[Bug 2092668] [NEW] New Ubuntu installer doesn't allow for selecting /dev/mapper/x in manual partitioning

2024-12-29 Thread Marcin
Public bug reported:

Problem:

1. Ubuntu installer doesn't allow for installing system on encrypted
partition with leaving some space free (unpartitioned). You can only use
the whole disk or play with existing unencrypted Ubuntu partition.

2. In Ubuntu 22.04 and earlier it was possible to use solution from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Full_Disk_Encryption_Howto_2019,
but... in 24.04 we have new installer and it doesn't allow for selecting
/dev/mapper/* in manual partitioning like earlier.

Expected:

1. Please bring old installer functionality (it should allow for
selecting all types of partitions like earlier)

or

2. Please provide such disk graphic visualization like in Gnome Disks
application (you see LUKS partition and partition inside LUKS in one
space) and just few options:

* on LUKS/unencrypted Linux partition - installing or replacing system
* on Windows partition - deleting
* on free space - creating LUKS/unencrypted Linux partition (we need option for
providing size)

[Bug 2092667] Re: Lack of LCD antialiasing in GNOME in Ubuntu 24.10 (24.04 the most probably too) is showstopper for migration

2024-12-29 Thread Marcin
** Description changed:

  Hallo,

GTK4 dropped by design / by purpose LCD antialiasing for fonts - Gnome
devs are in fact declaring, that users should move to 4K or better
screens (and they drop even efforts of fixing it, if I understand
  correctly).

I tried to migrate from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.10, but it failed because of
bad experience and eyes problems. 24.04 seems to be affected too.

  More specific: pls look into
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1511954/font-rendering-issue-
antialiasing and fonts examples - 22.04 version has got
clear/color/sharp edges and 24.x version has got gray edges.

  Questions:

- 1. how to correctly address this issue? (Gnome Discourse threads are closed
or ignored)
+ 1. how to correctly address this issue? (Gnome Discourse bugs and threads are
closed or ignored)
  2. If I understand correctly, Canonical is part of GNOME Foundation. Is it
possible to discuss it internally?
  3. Is it possible to ask for customized Gnome for Ubuntu or have very
official statement, what will be done with this? (this could be clear info for
people, if they should wait for resolving it and stay with 22.04 or migrate to
other distributions)

There are more people with this problem. Below some links about fonts
problems in new GTK (some resolved only in small part):

[Bug 2092667] [NEW] Lack of LCD antialiasing in GNOME in Ubuntu 24.10 (24.04 the most probably too) is showstopper for migration

2024-12-29 Thread Marcin
Public bug reported:

Questions:

1. how to correctly address this issue? (Gnome Discourse threads are closed or
ignored)
2. If I understand correctly, Canonical is part of GNOME Foundation. Is it
possible to discuss it internally?
3. Is it possible to ask for customized Gnome for Ubuntu or have very official
statement, what will be done with this? (this could be clear info for people,
if they should wait for resolving it and stay with 22.04 or migrate to other
distributions)

There are more people with this problem. Below some links about fonts
problems in new GTK (some resolved only in small part):

[Bug 2090911] Re: After hibernation the backlight of the onboard-keyboard of my laptop is not working anymore.

2024-12-29 Thread Paul White
Niko, the bug description shows that you do not have the 'hibernate'
package installed so that cannot be the errant package.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#Suspend_and_Hibernate
suggest that 'linux' is the correct package for reports which affect
suspending and hibernating?

Is this still an issue for you?

If so please tell us which version of the linux kernel you are currently
using.

[Bug 2092578] Re: TV display still active after HDMI unplug

2024-12-29 Thread Mirza
Update: Different TV, and it works different: removing HDMI immediately
removes additional display, and moves windows from that display to the
main display. However, turning off that TV does not produce same result.
Only unplugging HDMI cable. Turning off TV should be the same as
unplugging HDMI cable. Plugging HDMI again adds new display, even when
TV is off.

Yes, it does. It does not crash right after installation, but when reebooting.
The system is still running after the crash, I can connect via ssh, but the GUI
only shows an error screen.

[Bug 2092652] [NEW] Wireplumber service repeatedly fails with "attempt to concatenate a nil value" error in alsa.lua when handling audio nodes

2024-12-29 Thread PabloRQ
Public bug reported:

The wireplumber service is experiencing repeated errors related to
handling ALSA audio nodes. The error occurs in the alsa.lua script when
attempting to process node names, suggesting a potential issue with ALSA
device detection or naming.

Steps to reproduce
1. Start the wireplumber service
2. Monitor service logs using: journalctl --user -b -u wireplumber
3. The error appears multiple times in the logs

Observed behavior
The service logs show repeated errors with the following pattern:
```
wplua: [string "alsa.lua"]:182: attempt to concatenate a nil value (local
'node_name')
stack traceback:
[string "alsa.lua"]:182: in function <[string "alsa.lua"]:175>
```

System Information
- Ubuntu Version: 24.10

[Bug 2048704] Re: Crash: Failed to rotate /var/log/journal/*

2024-12-29 Thread Flaubert
Same issue. It happens when there is inactivity for some time. White square
instead of mouse. If I try to execute some cli command in an already existing
terminal: "Command not found". I have to switch off using power button. Same
messages: "Failed to Rotate message" "read-only filesystem" and then a lot of
"Failed to write entry". It seems some bug is turning /var/log/journal
partition to read-only and it crash the system. I have deactivated hibernation
& suspend, but it also fails.
Did a memset test: all OK.
fsck and smartctl shows no problem in SSD Disk. Disk is updated to the last
firmware.(INTEL SSDPEKNW010T8H --> f version HPS0)

It's a very SEVERE bug, as in Ubuntu 20 I don't remember that problem
with the same laptop. It started when I installed Ubuntu 24.01 Noble.
Running in a HP Laptop 5s-fq1xxx (1F9J2EA#ABE). I cannot let alone the
laptop more than 10 minutes, cause I find this bug happened. I've a dual
boot with Ubuntu 24 along with WIndows 11.

[Bug 2083519] Re: Dark theme not applied when start

2024-12-29 Thread James Payne
Yeah I see the same thing - struggling to find a search term to describe
the problem and stumbled across your post!

Was there any workaround you found?

Basically - on cold boot the UI theme seems to be stuck on light despite
dark being selected. If you wait long enough then dark will become
active - no user interaction is required.

There is also a REALLY long delay on first start of the filemanager
(talking 10 - 15 seconds) after dark is applied correctly its instant.

[Bug 2092671] [NEW] Unable to boot normally to log in

2024-12-29 Thread Dawson Sanderson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS. Only able to boot in Advanced options for Ubuntu in
6.8.0-50-generic (recovery mode) or 6.8.0-49- generic. Unable to boot
normally. This happened after I used sudo apt upgrade, sudo apt update,
and sudo apt autoremvove. This has been an ongoing problem and I had to
completely factory reset my laptop, to which it only worked if secure
boot was off. If secure boot was on, it booted straight to the boot menu
and I was unable to go leave the menu unless I turned the power off and
back on again and entered the GNU GRUB and then advanced options. I
saved the output of sudo apt upgrade which I believe is what caused the
issue.

+
+ I will just add, that this type of antialiasing is with us from ca. 2000
+ year.

  Questions:

  1. how to correctly address this issue? (Gnome Discourse bugs and threads are
closed or ignored)
  2. If I understand correctly, Canonical is part of GNOME Foundation. Is it
possible to discuss it internally?
  3. Is it possible to ask for customized Gnome for Ubuntu or have very
official statement, what will be done with this? (this could be clear info for
people, if they should wait for resolving it and stay with 22.04 or migrate to
other distributions)

There are more people with this problem. Below some links about fonts

[Bug 2000788] Re: NodeJS ships without corepack and suggests npm

2024-12-29 Thread Michael De La Rue
I would like to support some priority on this. It's not a security
vulnerability as such, but there is a proliferation of different sites
which are offering instructions for installing pnpm and yarn on Ubuntu,
incuding ones which involve directy piping the output of curl into bash
(https://github.com/nodesource/distributions/issues/1476, for example).

The standard instructions for installing yarn
(https://yarnpkg.com/getting-started/install) assume that corepack will
be available and the fact that it isn't makes people vulnerable to
searching google and following one of the more dodgy installation
instruction sets.

I believe that this is just a matter of activating a package from sid
(https://packages.debian.org/source/sid/node-corepack) or deleting one
option during the compile
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nodejs/+question/703946)
and is unlikely to cause harm because there is no other widely
distributed "corepack" binary.

[Bug 1379880] Re: plain text password authentication not working

2024-12-29 Thread xeniacanary
Thanks for sharing your solution! It looks like the patch effectively
addresses the issue with plain text authentication after upgrading to
Samba 14.04. The code modification to include
user_info->password.plaintext in the NTLMSSP authentication process
seems like a straightforward fix. It’s also helpful to note that
previous Samba versions since 2012-02-16 have been affected, which
provides useful context for those working with earlier versions.

Could you confirm if this fix also resolves any potential issues with
other authentication methods or if it's specific to the plain text
approach? Would be great to know how it impacts overall authentication
functionality!

[Bug 2089709] Re: Intermittent blank screen after logging in on Ubuntu 24.04 with X11

2024-12-29 Thread Peter Michlik
I have the same problem. I upgraded Ubuntu 22.04 to version 24.04, since
then sometimes after logging in the desktop does not appear, only the X
cursor on a black background.

I switched to the console by pressing ctrl + alt + f3 and restarted the
computer with the reboot command.

Then it works for me - most of the time.

If after logging in the desktop appears, then everything is fine, the
error does not appear during work, during PC sleep or during long sleep.

I suspected that the old computer was to blame (CPU Intel i5-4960,
motherboard ASUS Z97-A, RAM 32 GB, SSD SATA III - WD blue 1 TB)

I bought a new computer (CPU Intel i5-14400, motherboard ASROCK B760 PRO
RS/D4 WIFI, RAM 32 GB, SSD M.2 NVMe - WD black 1TB)

I copied the UBUNTU 24.04 installation from (SSD SATA III) to the new
(SSD M.2 NVMe) using ddrescue.

Now I have exactly the same UBUNTU 24.04 on both the old computer and
the new computer and the error is the same.

This tells me that it is not a hardware problem.

The problem is in UBUNTU 24.04 - the worst thing is that sometimes the
login is successful, sometimes it needs to be restarted.

[Bug 2092701] [NEW] [SRU] Silence "Unsupported condition" error message

2024-12-29 Thread Yao Wei
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

 * Downgrade error message reported by thermald about unsupported
   conditions in GDDV table.

Upstream PR: https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/pull/434

Oracular and Plucky are already on 2.5.8 where the above PR has
been included.

[ Test Plan ]

=== Feature test ===

 * On Lunar Lake (where "Unsupported condition 4 (Motion)" message
occurs) and Meteor Lake CPUs, check journalctl log. The message
   mentioned above should not exist.

=== Regression test ===

 * On the above systems, run checkbox stress tests job, the system
should not trip Tmax and shut down:

sudo STRESS_NG_CPU_TIME=600 checkbox-cli run
com.canonical.certification::stress/cpu_stress_ng_test

[ Where problems could occur ]

 * Real issues might be hidden by this log level downgrade, although
we do not suspect any major issues with it.

[Bug 1212634] Re: Si sono verificati degli errori nell'elaborazione: samba4 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2024-12-29 Thread DVHosting
I faced the same error while trying to install Samba4. It seems like
there’s a conflict during the installation process. I solved it by
running sudo apt --fix-broken install to resolve missing dependencies.
Has anyone tried this solution or found other ways to fix this error?
