[Bug 1621367] Re: 4.4.0-36: keyboard dead at boot & full disk encryption prompt for password

2024-12-15 Thread Edmond Shwayri
I can confirm the same behavior with Kubuntu 24.04 upgraded from
6.8.0-49 to 6.8.0-50. System boots to LUKS password prompt and I get 2
seconds or so to type before the screen blanks for 2 seconds. When it
returns I am unable to type. Using Grub Advanced I can force the boot
to 6.8.0-49 and everything works fine as before. Alternatively I can
use Grub Advanced to edit the 6.8.0-50 command line and remove quiet and
splash to do a text boot.  In that mode I still get the flash behavior;
however, I am able to continue typing after the flash. I found several
Mint related posts complaining about the same kernel with the same
issue.

My system is an AMD 5950X with and AMD 7800XT video card. RAM is 64GB.
Keyboard and mouse are Razer and they are hard wired in.

When Windows 11 people want to switch to Linux, this kind of behavior is
very unsettling to them. While my experience gives me the ability to
work around it, this really needs to be fixed. Its not comforting to
find and 8 year old ticket that describes the same issue.

[Bug 2091837] Re: Adding support for Cirrus sof-soundwire audio on Dell Renegade platform

2024-12-15 Thread Chris Chiu
** Summary changed:

- Adding support for Cirrus sof-soundwire audio on Dell GhostRider platform
+ Adding support for Cirrus sof-soundwire audio on Dell Renegade platform

** Description changed:

  [SRU Justifications]
-
- == linux ==

  [Impact]

  Dell Renegade comes with Cirrus cs42l43 codec + cs35l56 amplifier on
  Intel ARL platform. It requires the latest driver fix from Cirrus on to
  have audio functions working correctly.

  [Fix]
- Backport the patches to support the cs35l56 amplifier on sdw link 2/3.
+ Backport the patches to support the cs35l56 amplifier on sdw link 2/3.

  [Test Case]
  1. Boot up the Dell Renegade laptops.
  2. Make sure firmware-sof, alsa-ucm-conf and kernel version support Cirrus
codec. (alsa-ucm-conf needs to be >= 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.4, firmware-sof >=
2023.12.1-1ubuntu1.3)
  3. check with the `aplay -l` commands to see if any valid audio output
devices.
  4. Make sure the audio play/record function is working.

  [Where problems could occur]
  It add support the CS42L43 + CS35L56 configuration on Intel ARL platform and
the CS35L56 on sdw bus link 2 and 3 which need new firmware-sof and
alsa-ucm-conf to support. Only affects machines with the same audio
configuration. The risk of regression is low.

[Bug 2091719] Re: BTRFS kernel panic on btrfs_remove_qgroup

2024-12-15 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Luca,

Yes, I also think you are seeing the exact same issue. The WARN_ON was
introduced
in the following commit:

ubuntu-noble b2ad25ba539452f492805e5f7d94e80894aa860f
commit a776bf5f3c2300cfdf8a195663460b1793ac9847
Author: Qu Wenruo
Date:   Fri Apr 19 14:29:32 2024 +0930
Subject: btrfs: slightly loosen the requirement for qgroup removal
Link:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=a776bf5f3c2300cfdf8a195663460b1793ac9847

$ git describe --contains b2ad25ba539452f492805e5f7d94e80894aa860f
Ubuntu-6.8.0-50.51~143

This doesn't exactly panic the kernel as you say, it outputs a warning to dmesg.
You seem to have the sysctl panic_on_warn set, and that's what panics the
system.

For now use 6.8.0-49-generic or turn off panic_on_warn as a workaround until
this
gets fixed.

Now the commit:

btrfs-devel c61ffaa0a3d9a2094e24d1fe2b17f20e109d2cc8
Author: Qu Wenruo
Date:   Mon Nov 11 07:29:07 2024 +1030
Subject: btrfs: improve the warning and error message for btrfs_remove_qgroup()
Link:
https://github.com/btrfs/linux/commit/c61ffaa0a3d9a2094e24d1fe2b17f20e109d2cc8

This hasn't been merged into mainline just yet, it is still in the btrfs devel
tree.

We need to wait until it reaches Linus's tree before we can merge into
Ubuntu.

For the mean time, if you like, I made a test kernel based on 6.8.0-50-generic
for 24.04 with the commit applied if you want to test it out to see if it
fixes your problem.

Please note this package is NOT SUPPORTED by Canonical, and is for TESTING
PURPOSES ONLY. ONLY Install in a dedicated test environment.

Instructions to Install (On a mantic system):
1) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mruffell/lp2091719-test
2) sudo apt update
3) sudo apt install linux-image-unsigned-6.8.0-50-generic
linux-modules-6.8.0-50-generic linux-modules-extra-6.8.0-50-generic
linux-headers-6.8.0-50-generic
4) sudo reboot
5) uname -rv
6.8.0-50-generic #51+TEST2091719v20241216b1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun Dec
15

Again, if it works, we will wait until it reaches mainline, and then we can
begin the SRU process.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 2091841] [NEW] /var/log/asterisk/cdr-csv/Master.csv incorrect permissions

2024-12-15 Thread Ian Nicholson
Public bug reported:

When a call ends (only tested with pjsip) asterisk will attempt to write
a log entry to /var/log/asterisk/cdr-csv/Master.csv which is by default
owned by root:root. Permissions on this file should probably be
asterisk:asterisk to allow log files to be written.

When the file owner is root:root the following error is logged in the asterisk
console:
"WARNING[1206]: cdr_csv.c:308 csv_log: Unable to write CSV record to master
'/var/log/asterisk//cdr-csv//Master.csv' : Permission denied"

  [ Fix ]

  Patch the code to properly support the new linux 6.11 ABI.

  [ Regression potential ]

  The EVDI module can be used to control multiple screens. We may
  experience regressions related to graphics / monitors in systems that
  are using this module, especially with the new kernels >= 6.11.

[Bug 2091847] [NEW] Prefer BIOS over PMF on some AMD platforms

2024-12-15 Thread Leo Lin
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

Some AMD platforms prefer letting BIOS handling what are supposed to be
done by the PMF kernel driver. On those platforms, the BIOS should take
full control over the relevant functions, without the interference from
the PMF driver. To achieve this, add quirks that make the PMF driver
fail to probe on those platforms.

[ Test Plan ]

1. Install the kernel on one of those platforms.
2. Boot into the kernel.
3. Check dmesg. It should show "Platform prefers BIOS over PMF module. Finish
PMF driver probe early."

[ Where problems could occur ]

If the quirk matches the wrong platform, PMF driver will not function.

[ Other Information ]

Simply making the driver fail to probe would suffice. This is because
BIOS detects the presence of the PMF driver by detecting regular
heartbeat signal sent from the driver. If BIOS detects no such
heartbeats, it'll consider the PMF driver missing, and will
automatically take over the relevant functions.

[Bug 2091807] [NEW] libegl and libglx lock on Oracular

2024-12-15 Thread Yves Roggeman
Public bug reported:

Installing libegl-amber0 and/or libglx-amber0 (21.3.9-0ubuntu2) on Oracular
(24.10) destroys display system.
Even eglgears_wayland does not start, but many other simple apps, like
gnome-sushi.
Error messages are
"libEGL warning: did not find extension DRI_IMAGE_DRIVER version 1"
and with Qt apps, messages like
"QEGLPlatformContext: Failed to create context: 3000"
or
"QEGLPlatformContext: Failed to create context: 3009",
"QRhiGles2: Failed to create context"
a.s.o.
Uninstalling these two packages restores the system.
Clearly, this version is incompatible with the standard garphic system.

[Bug 2091811] [NEW] SRU: backport timestamps in subsection messages

2024-12-15 Thread Matthias Klose
Public bug reported:

For upcoming test rebuilds, we would like to analyze build times, and
measuring different phases of a build as well, like build-chroot's
upgrade times, installation of build dependencies, and the build itself.
Therefore we add timestamps to existing log messages already emitted by
sbuild. These changes are in plucky (sbuild 0.87.1ubuntu2), and need to
be backported up to jammy (the sbuild from the distro is used for the
launchpad builders).

[ Impact ]

 * Emit time stamps in the build log for subsection messages.

[ Test Plan ]

 * sbuild has an autopkg test doing a test build of a package.
   Make sure that the subsection messages show the timestamp.

[ Where problems could occur ]

 * This only has an (desired) impact for the build log. There are
   currently no known tools using these messages for parsing.

   The messages are already in ascii formatted boxes, the timestamp
   just replaces some white space, so even the length of the build
   log stays the same.

[ Other Info ]

 * We would like to start the test rebuilds on Dec 20, so it
   would be nice to have that change availabe in the updates
   pocket at that time.

 * This change is already accepted upstream and will be part of
   a 0.87.2 or 0.88 release.

According to the raspberry pi issue, the following patches are integrated to
fix the issue:
51b2a72 ("can: mcp251xfd: properly indent labels")
(https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/commit/51b2a721612236335ddec4f3fb5f59e72a204f3a)

(https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/commit/a7801540f325d104de5065850a003f1d9bdc6ad3)

The IRQ handler mcp251xfd_handle_tefif() returned -22. problem is partly fixed
with:
3c1c185 ("can: mcp251xfd: mcp251xfd_get_tef_len(): fix length calculation")
(https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/commit/3c1c18551e6ac1b988d0a05c5650e3f6c95a1b8a)

But it might be that the driver is missing several other patches needed
for stability.

will create the error)

[Bug 2091831] [NEW] Edge and Chrome titlebar need three taps on touchpad to maximize, instead of 2, like other apps

2024-12-15 Thread Mirza
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 2024.10 I need 3 touchpad-taps to maximize Chrome or Edge
window, while all other applications I use, "Settings" for example, need
2 taps.

If I use mouse, then Chrome and Edge also need only 2 clicks (double-
click) to maximize, so problem is related only to touchpad.

[Bug 2085091] Re: cupsd assert failure: corrupted double-linked list

2024-12-15 Thread Joe Wronski
I also get this error as stated in the Ubuntu pop-up that a system problem
causes to appear.
I don't know how to acquire the actual crash report.
But from the crash dialog here are some interesting items:
o LPStat shows 2 items for the same Canon MX410 Series printer - one USB and
one networked print server
o it also lists 2 items PpdFiles CUPS+Gutenprint v5.3.3 and v5.3.1
Also, I had gone through numerous iterations of trying to install the Canon
printer driver, which always failed due to an unresolved dependency. So I also
tried different Ubuntu Cups drivers from various Ubuntu sources.

In Settings, I want to change shortcut for keyboard layout switch, from
default Super+Space to Alt+Shift (Windows standard). When I try to do
this, settings says "Enter new shortcut" (localized version of it), but
pressing Alt and then Shift brings no reaction from this window, like if
nothing is pressed. I can only set other shortcut like Alt-E for
example, that works.

[Bug 2087886] Re: MGLRU: kswapd uses 100% CPU when MGLRU is enabled and under memory pressure

2024-12-15 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Performing verification for Oracular.

I didn't have the same real-world testbed for oracular, so I just set up
a lab system and enabled MGLRU and left it running stress-ng with a
memory stressor for 3 days.

Its still up after 3 days, and kswapd processes are at 0%, so we will
call this smoke tested, and likely fixes the issue.

Marking as verified for Oracular.

Performing verification for Noble.

We installed 6.8.0-51-generic to the same DPDK compute nodes running
OpenStack Yoga on Jammy. We enabled MGLRU and left them running, and
checked 2 days later. Things are still stable, all kswapd processes are
normal at 0% CPU.

Things are looking very good.

Marking as verified for Noble, the kernel in proposed2 solves the issue.

[Bug 2087831] Re: On a laptop with NVIDIA graphics and touchscreen, touchscreen gets disabled after resume from suspend in Xorg session

2024-12-15 Thread loukangzhen
Sorry, my fault, after double check with old-releases source, I can
reproduce on 23.10 and 23.04, but cannot reproduce on 22.10.

22.10: kernel version: 5.19.0-21-generic, nvidia driver version:535.54.03,
gnome-shell version: 43.0
23.04: kernel version: 6.2.0-20-generic, nvidia driver version:535.146.02,
gnome-shell version: 44.0

Seems the change happened between gnome-shell 43.0 and 44.0.

[Bug 2026758] Re: Bug #2008279 reappears (loss of keyboard input for x11 snaps) if ~/.cache is a symlink

2024-12-15 Thread Sam Van den Eynde
Hard to understand how Canonical keeps on breaking trivial Linux things
that have been working for decades and allowing this to exist for nearly
one and a half year now without decent work arounds.

I checked the new security app, there is no way to allow these snaps
access to the directory where cache files reside, which are obviously
there to keep them out of precious backup space etc.

[Bug 2091753] Re: Plymouth fails with kernel 6.8.0-50

2024-12-15 Thread Russell Faull
Follow-up: After install the video driver nvidia-dkms-550, version
550.120-0ubuntu0.24.04.1, and inserting 'splash' in the grub kernel
command on my HP Zbook (same machine as reported earlier) booting
continues pausing at the graphical screen for the partition password and
boots through to X as normal.

I'm wondering if the problem relates to the nouveau video driver.

Hey @hifron,

unfortunately, the prompt client will not work with generic appimages at
this time. It is currently exclusively for applications packaged up as
snaps. Yes appimages can be packaged as snaps and then it would work but
it would not work for generic appimages.

We are working on a prompt solution for appimages via aa-notify. It is
available in oracular, and an updated version will soon be available in
plucky. This will get backported (SRUed) to 24.04.

[Bug 2091837] [NEW] Adding support for Cirrus sof-soundwire audio on Dell GhostRider platform

2024-12-15 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

[SRU Justifications]

== linux ==

[Impact]

Dell Renegade comes with Cirrus cs42l43 codec + cs35l56 amplifier on
Intel ARL platform. It requires the latest driver fix from Cirrus on to
have audio functions working correctly.

[Fix]
Backport the patches to support the cs35l56 amplifier on sdw link 2/3.
1.
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/broonie/sound.git/commit/?id=a3003af649efb6f3d86d379d1e9a966ea6d5f5ab
2.
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/broonie/sound.git/commit/?id=d7f671b2f566379f275c13e25a29fa7001bb278f

[Test Case]
1. Boot up the Dell Renegade laptops.
2. Make sure firmware-sof, alsa-ucm-conf and kernel version support Cirrus
codec. (alsa-ucm-conf needs to be >= 1.2.10-1ubuntu5.4, firmware-sof >=
2023.12.1-1ubuntu1.3)
3. check with the `aplay -l` commands to see if any valid audio output devices.
4. Make sure the audio play/record function is working.

[Where problems could occur]
It add support the CS42L43 + CS35L56 configuration on Intel ARL platform and
the CS35L56 on sdw bus link 2 and 3 which need new firmware-sof and
alsa-ucm-conf to support. Only affects machines with the same audio
configuration. The risk of regression is low.

[Bug 2020395] Re: No sound on ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI

2024-12-15 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
Unfortunately, they can't update the ucm conf files alone. They would
also need to update the ALSA libs to read the newer Syntax version
("Syntax 6").

I made a PPA for that a while ago:
https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ubuntu/mediahacks2?field.series_filter=jammy
If you use the PPA, you should be able to use alsa-ucm 1.2.11
(1.2.12 introduces another incompatible syntax change, "Syntax 7")

@samluanch as you noted, container managers like flatpak and podman
can indeed be a problem dependent on what their children are allowed
to do. Yes if not handled correctly they can be used as a trivial
by-pass, which is part of the reason you have run into problems
with bwrap.

The container manager can be limited, and its children's rights
can be mitigated, keeping the manager from being used as a trivial
by-pass. There is a bwrap profile hat allows bwrap to function.
It however does limit/break some of bwrap. And it has had
interactions with flatpak, that lead to it being reverted. There
will be another attempt to roll a revised version out.

The other part of the answer to your inquiry is, Ubuntu is
trying to ship a secure by default configuration. Users are
allowed to install, what they want. Change configurations,
etc. The user is then opting into a less secure configuration.

We will not be setting the restriction to 0 with the installation
of such software on the system because it can still block
attacks, to by-pass it an attack will have to be tailored
to use a software that is not enabled by default, and requires
privilege to install. In addition there are configurations of
flatpak, and podmap that can work with the restriction, so it
very much will depend on your local config.

[Bug 2091825] [NEW] unable to install samba: libldbsamba.so.0: undefined symbol

2024-12-15 Thread ^rooker
Public bug reported:

This error is odd.

I'm on Xubuntu 20.04.6, and I've reverted all app sources back to plain
vanialla distro (universe, multiverse, restricted)

I've reinstalled Samba (for another reason) - and ended up in having no
Samba at all.

Apt keeps failing with the following error message:

```
Checking smb.conf with testparm
testparm: **symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/libldbsamba.so.0: undefined symbol:
ldb_msg_element_is_inaccessible, version LDB_2.4.4**
dpkg: error processing package samba-common-bin (--configure):
 installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess
returned error exit status 127
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of samba:
 samba depends on samba-common-bin (= 2:4.15.13+dfsg-0ubuntu0.20.04.8); however:
  Package samba-common-bin is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing package samba (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
No apport report written because the error message indicates it's a follow-up
error from a previous failure.
Processing triggers for ufw (0.36-6ubuntu1.1) ...
```

The following line therein is the one I don't understand:

> "symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/samba/libldbsamba.so.0: undefined symbol:
ldb_msg_element_is_inaccessible, version LDB_2.4.4"

It sounds like the libldb and samba versions/APIs? are not matching?
How could that be?
I've ran "debsums" on my system, and it says some missing files, but no borken
libraries.

Any clues and help greatly appreciated!
A life without samba is not really fun :(

Thanks.
