[Bug 2077782] [NEW] plugins/check_packages reports warning state for phased packages

2024-08-24 Thread Arkadiusz Miśkiewicz
Public bug reported:

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_packages

but it should not warn about these packages (and just report OK state)
since all them are in "phased" updates, so not required to be updated
yet:

and also from monitoring-plugins-contrib_46.20240417ubuntu1_amd64.deb
- same behaviour.

[Bug 2077506] Re: please remove from oracular archive for plasma 6 transition

2024-08-24 Thread Rik Mills
** No longer affects: khotkeys (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

  Please remove these sources and binaries from oracular archive. Needed
  to migrate Plasma 6.

  apper https://invent.kde.org/system/apper

  $ reverse-depends src:apper
  Reverse-Recommends
  ==
  * gstreamer1.0-packagekit   (for apper)
  * packagekit-gtk3-module(for apper)

  apper is effectively dead upstream, and has a mandatory build dependency
  on Qt5 plasma-workspace

  bismuth

  $ reverse-depends src:bismuth
  No reverse dependencies found

  Depends plasma 5 and build depends plasma 5 kdecoration

  Upstream developer is not going to produce a Plasma 6 compatible
  version: see https://github.com/Bismuth-Forge/bismuth/issues/471

- khotkeys
-
- Part of plasma 5. With plasma 6 no longer required and among dropped
- tars.
-
- https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Plasma_6.0_Release_notes
-
- Build depends on plasma 5 workspace.
-
- $ reverse-depends src:khotkeys
- Reverse-Recommends
- ==
- * kmenuedit (for khotkeys)
- * plasma-desktop(for khotkeys)
-
- Both those recommends go away with plasma 6
-
-
-
  plasma-bigscreen

  Dropped from plasma with plasma 6 (see previous release note link)
  Build depends plasma 5 workspace, and currently no plasma 6 port upstream.

  $ reverse-depends src:plasma-bigscreen
  No reverse dependencies found

  plasma-mobile

  Somehow crept into our plasma updates, but not something we really
  support. Point in case that this is not maintained by the qt-kde team in
  debian, but by DebianOnMobile maintainers, who have not yet packaged Qt6
  port.

  This build depends on plasma 5 kpipewire, workspace and qqc2-breeze-
  style, so has to go to migrate plasma 6. It can of course come back at
  the point DebianOnMobile port the packaging.

  $ reverse-depends src:plasma-mobile
  No reverse dependencies found

Debdiff for Oracular looks good, but we need someone to sponsor that one
first (thus I'm subscribing ~ubuntu-sponsors). Once -devel is fixed, we
can look into getting the stable series merged.

[Bug 2073846] Re: [SRU] Fix the session workqueue thread priority setting issue for newer Linux kernels (>=6.x)

2024-08-24 Thread Heitor Alves de Siqueira
Thanks for the detailed bug report, Mustafa! I've left a review for you
MR, feel free to take a look when you have the time.

For future reference, please refrain from removing series from an LP
bug. It's preferable to mark a series as "Fix Released" or "Won't Fix"
appropriately, so that the bug doesn't disappear from any searches or
queries in Launchpad. I've re-added Oracular as Fix Released, according
to your comment on version 2.1.10.

[Bug 2077795] [NEW] After a weekly update the nvidia-driver-545 that I used because it was the most reliable stopped working and reverted back to nouveau drivers that barely work

2024-08-24 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:

Hi, Hope you are keeping well and sorry that I have to post this bug.

First I'll get the 4 questions listed here first, then add more info
afterwards:

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Release:22.04

2) apt-cache policy nvidia-driver-535

3) Expected the nvidia-driver-545 to remain installed that I had
previously, and work as normal after the weekly updates.

4) After the weekly updates, the kernel module compile for 545 failed
and reverted back to the nouveau driver which resulted in very red and
yellow toned screen on reboot. Then I had to fumble my way to get the
535 driver barely being able to see what I was typing on screen.

More info:

After a weekly update the nvidia-driver-545 that I used because it was
the most reliable stopped working and reverted back to nouveau drivers
that barely works at all.

When I try to install the 545 driver back, I get compile errors for the
kernel modules.

I know nvidia drivers are always hit or miss on Linux, so I'm not overly
surprised (its why I'm not on the latest).

However, the 535 driver (although works) has issues with rendering some
applications (and show up as a black square), or performance stutters
when watching videos or moving windows around the screen.

The other issues are that 3D rendering, video processing, AI, gaming and
a bunch of other GPU based workflows just don't work well with the 535
driver.

The reason I used the 545 driver was because non of those issues existed
there, and any issues were mild in comparison to the 535 driver.

I'm not sure what has changed between linux-image-6.5.0-45-generic
(previous) and linux-image-6.8.0-40-generic (current), but the change is
obviously affecting the 545 and above drivers. I can also no longer see
the 550 or 555 drivers (which I presume are even worse).

If there is anything I can do to help diagnose the problem, please let
me know and I'll provide anything you need.

Hopefully this gets resolved soon - especially on the LTS branches.

Kind regards,
Haz

[Bug 2063899] Re: [SRU] Users are not initially configured properly for audio in Ubuntu Studio

2024-08-24 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Uhoh... I found a regression.

When dbus tried to upgrade this morning, I ran into an issue where it
tried to re-create a system user with a --group flag, which is mutually-
exclusive of the --ingroup of the adduser wrapper. Therefore, I had to
add some checks to make the wrapper check for the mutually-exclusive
options before adding a user to the audio group. If it finds the
mutually-exclusive options, it will pass the command line to the actual
adduser command unchanged now.

[Bug 1760426] Re: hangs on start if remembered directory not available

2024-08-24 Thread Paul White
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
review all reported bugs in a timely manner.

Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of-standard-support on April 29, 2021.

I'm setting the status of this bug to 'Incomplete' as it's not seen any
activity for some time. If this is still an issue when using a currently
maintained release of Ubuntu then please let us know which one(s)
otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days
time.

[Bug 2077802] [NEW] After latest udate the hangs on mounting SD media reader.

2024-08-24 Thread Don
Public bug reported:

(I believe) After the latest Ubuntu update (automatic update via
updater), I can no longer access media from the internal SD reader.
Device hangs trying to manually mount or fsck the media, this also
prevents proper shutdown waiting on udev device. Booting into an older
kernel does not exhibit the issue.

After reboot with media installed, lsblk shows the device and proper
partition sizes but hangs on access (mount or fsck).

This occurs only on the internal media reader (PCI interface) on Dell
E6220 with the latest kernel. USB adapter does not exhibit the issue
using the same SD card and kernel.

[Bug 2077803] [NEW] Touchpad devices not found

2024-08-24 Thread Patrick Nicodemus
Public bug reported:

General information:

$ lsb_release -rd
No LSB modules are available.
Description:Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Release:24.04

Three months ago I upgraded from Ubuntu 23 to Ubuntu 24. Somehow this
upgrade process went wrong because the Linux kernel did not update from
driver version=6.5.0-35-generic to 6.8.0-31-generic. On Ubuntu 24.04 +
Linux 6.5 everything works fine and there are no difficulties other than
not being able to install an appropriate version of `linux-tools-
generic` from apt.

I am now intending to upgrade the Linux kernel to 6.8.0-31-generic, I
have the two kernels available side by side at the bios menu on the same
machine. The touchpad is not functional at all when using Linux 6.8.

On Ubuntu 24.04 + Linux kernel 6.5, sudo lshw -C input returns 14
devices, three of which are mouse-related.

[Bug 2077804] [NEW] Icon theme is switching to the icon theme that was applied before on switching to light mode and vice a versa

2024-08-24 Thread Prathamesh Lakeshri
Public bug reported:

---Issue---

Icon theme is switching to the icon theme that was applied before on
switching to light mode and vice a versa.

Icon theme I used before: Yaru-red

Icon theme I am using now and having issues with: Win11-blue
(https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1546069)

Icon theme is working fine. But when I switch to 'light mode' the icon
theme is setting to 'Yaru-red' on its own. There is no change when
switching back to dark mode.

[Bug 2074309] Re: upgrade 22.04 -> 24.04 won't start due to feature flags

2024-08-24 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Hi,

actually I do not have any problem to fix anymore since the workaround
procedure with podman described above totally solved my problem.
(Improvement:   replace 127 with $(id -u rabbitmq)  and 138 with $(id -g
rabbitmq)

But to test the bug fix I've setup a fresh 22.04 in LXD, installed
rabbitmq-server, enabled -proposed, copied my backup of my old server
into /var/lib/rabbitmq and ran a do-release-upgrade -p.

And yes, the upgrade was denied:

Unable to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Currently, you have RabbitMQ server installed, which is not directly
upgradable to the newer version. Upgrading may prevent the server
from starting due to missing feature flags.

For more information, please see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2074309.

Ursprünglicher Systemzustand wird wieder hergestellt

Wird abgebrochen

So yes, it kept me from breaking the server.

However, I'd suggest to extend the message a bit, since a not so experienced
admin just wouldn't know what to do now.

I'd suggest to tell the three options:

- stay safe, but outdated at 22.04 (for unknown time)

- lose your database and all your data, and complete purge the rabbitmq-
server package, do update, and do fresh install from scratch

- stop daemon, backup /var/lib/rabbitmq, remove, but not purge the
package, do the upgrade, use the workaround procedure with podman as
described above (and no warranty that it works and images are still
available), and reinstall/start.

As far as I know, Ubuntu has a Wiki. Wouldn't it be better to make a
wiki page with instructions instead of pointing to this bug?

[Bug 2048517] Re: EPYC-Rome model without XSAVES may break live migration since the removal of the flag on the physical CPU

2024-08-24 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
Verification done with focal-proposed (now -updates).

As discussed with Andreas last Thursday, we had positive, general
feedback from Managed Solutions (formerly Bootstack) with the package
still in focal-proposed, but wanted to do a more detailed testing.

Here is a more detailed verification of the test plan,
performed in Oracle Cloud with 2 bare-metal instances
(type/shape: BM.Standard.E3, AMD EPYC 7742/"EPYC-Rome").

[1] https://docs.oracle.com/en-
us/iaas/Content/Compute/References/computeshapes.htm

I performed an Openstack Ussuri (Ubuntu Focal) deployment
with Juju on virtual machines for all other components;
only the Nova Compute components run on such bare-metal.
(This has many steps and details, not covered in here.)

Summary:
---

This test covered the test plan:

 * Start a VM before/after the package upgrade (focal-proposed), checking
   the VM XML for that flag (e.g., policy change from require to disable)

 * Ensure that nova is able to start *with* and *without* enable/disable
   cpu flag changes.

 * Ensure live migration works on both ways across the 2 hypervisors
   *with* and *without* enable/disable cpu flag changes.

Details:
---

We'll be using hypervisors mfo-bm4 and mfo-bm5:

$ openstack hypervisor list
++-+-+-+---+
| ID | Hypervisor Hostname | Hypervisor Type | Host IP | State |
++-+-+-+---+
|  1 | mfo-bm4 | QEMU| 129.146.175.125 | up|
|  2 | mfo-bm5 | QEMU| 129.146.120.140 | up|
++-+-+-+---+

nova-compute packages:

$ for HOST in mfo-bm{4,5}; do ssh $HOST 'hostname; dpkg -s nova-compute
| grep -e Package -e Version; echo'; done
mfo-bm4
Package: nova-compute
Version: 2:21.2.4-0ubuntu2.13

mfo-bm5
Package: nova-compute
Version: 2:21.2.4-0ubuntu2.13

The processor has `xsaves` enabled until kernel version 5.15.0-1039-oracle
(later kernel versions ship the patch to remove `xsaves` in some EPYC CPUs).

Note that `xsaves` is present in /proc/cpuinfo:

$ for HOST in mfo-bm{4,5}; do ssh $HOST 'hostname; uname -rv; echo;
head -n5 /proc/cpuinfo; echo; grep -m1 -o "xsave\w\+" /proc/cpuinfo; echo'; done
mfo-bm4

Configure nova-compute for the EPYC-Rome cpu model, and restart nova-
compute.service:

$ for HOST in mfo-bm{4,5}; do ssh $HOST 'hostname; sudo grep -w -e
cpu_mode -e cpu_model -e cpu_model_extra_flags /etc/nova/nova.conf; echo'; done
mfo-bm4
cpu_mode = custom
cpu_model = EPYC-Rome

mfo-bm5
cpu_mode = custom
cpu_model = EPYC-Rome

For starters, let's create a VM and later live migrate it across the 2
hypervisors, back and forth.

$ openstack server create \
  --image cirros \
  --boot-from-volume 8 \
  --flavor flavor-all-one \
  --network test-network \
  --os-compute-api-version 2.74 \
  --host mfo-bm4 \
  vm1

$ openstack server show vm1 | grep -e :hypervisor_hostname -e
:instance_name -e :vm_state
| OS-EXT-SRV-ATTR:hypervisor_hostname | mfo-bm4
 |
| OS-EXT-SRV-ATTR:instance_name   | instance-000f
 |
| OS-EXT-STS:vm_state | active
 |

$ for HOST in mfo-bm{4,5}; do ssh $HOST 'hostname; sudo virsh list
--name'; done
mfo-bm4
instance-000f

mfo-bm5

Note its libvirt XML has the xsaves cpu flag as 'require':

$ ssh mfo-bm4 "sudo virsh dumpxml instance-000f | grep -e '
EPYC-Rome

Now live migrate to the other hypervisor:

$ openstack server migrate --wait --live-migration --host mfo-bm5
--os-compute-api-version 2.30 vm1
Complete

$ openstack server show vm1 | grep -e :hypervisor_hostname -e
:instance_name -e :vm_state
| OS-EXT-SRV-ATTR:hypervisor_hostname | mfo-bm5
 |

[Bug 2077810] [NEW] Xorg freeze on wayland

2024-08-24 Thread Malcolm Silva
Public bug reported:

When trying to use Wayland, the machine freezes semi-randomly, I can
blindly click to pause video playback if there is any, the screen
doesn't black out, it just freezes and doesn't change from then on.

Most of my usage includes heavy video watching, namely Twitch, Youtube,
Kick, Afreecatv and Plex. I watch on Firefox and Brave mostly. It seems
to mostly happen when changing which window is focused, but it's not
exclusive to video playback.

Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of these lockups?
 - Several, usually an initial one after hours of use, and then I can't keep
the system stable for more then a few minutes for the next few hard reboots
until I switch back off of Wayland.

If you've had several, how often does it occur? Every few hours? Once or twice
a day? Couple times a week?
 - After a few hours on Wayland, at most within 24 hours after switching to
Wayland. The following times happen within minutes of the hard reboot to
recovery.

When did you first notice it?
 - I've had the same issue on Wayland since being on 22.04 using nvidia 545
drivers. I tried again after updating to 555 drivers on the 'graphics-drivers'
PPA, issue repeated itself. Today I swapped to 560-open (no longer on the
graphics-drivers PPA), and tried to use Wayland again, but same issue.

Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce?
 - Switching between desktops and window focus, I keep 2 firefox windows open,
one per display, and 1 brave window open, it happens most frequently when
swapping from brave to firefox on the opposite display, but is not exclusive,
and can happen when there's no video playback in any of the browsers.

Gonna mention, I'm not new to Linux, but am very new to Desktop Linux.
I submitted this bug while on X11 because I couldn't keep it from freezing for
long enough for the ubuntu-bug utility to gather information while on Wayland.
Not sure if that data is getting submitted along this form, or separately, so,
sry if I'm making more work needlessly.

2024-08-24 Thread Jesse Kearse
Public bug reported:

I wanted to upgrade my nvidia driver, becuase I am having extreme issues
with cpu spikes with nvidia-modest associated with SYN_DROPPED events in
system log files. I used the ubuntu auto install and selected 545
driver. But it failed to install. Ultimately, this was simply a
troubleshooting step to try and fix my mouse and keyboard malfunctions.
my symptoms are after login on my Dell Precision Tower 7875, the
keyboard and mouse become un-responsive after ~ 1 minute, and
intermittently work after that. Each time the keyboard and mouse glitch,
the cpu load spikes at close to 100% and the log files say SYN_DROPPED
associated with the mouse. I am using a wired dell mouse, and a wired
dell keyboard. These issued only occurred after inserting a portable usb
storage devise into the front USB-3 slot. now the issue wont go away.
please help.

[Bug 2077814] [NEW] Kernel Modules Not Installed for Kernel 6.2 Using ubuntu-drivers

2024-08-24 Thread SIG
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS. I used ubuntu-drivers
(0.9.6.2~0.22.04.6) to try and install NVIDIA drivers 535 and 470 on
Ubuntu 22.04, but the kernel modules are only installed for the 6.8
kernel (my default kernel), leading to a failure to boot into the 6.2
kernel. Specifically, this causes GDM to fail to start, with the logs
showing the following error messages repeated over and over:

00:36:29 gdm3: Gdm: GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing
00:35:58 kernel: modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory
/lib/modules/6.2.0-26-generic
00:35:48 modprobe: modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory
/lib/modules/6.2.0-26-generic

The issue did not occur when kernel 6.2 was my default, so it likely affects
any non-default kernel versions installed.

[Bug 2077815] [NEW] Kernel 6.8: Incompatibility with NVIDIA Drivers Causing System Freezes, Crashes, and Suspend Failures

2024-08-24 Thread SIG
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to kernel 6.8 on Ubuntu 22.04.4, the system frequently
freezes, crashes, and always fails to resume from suspend when using
NVIDIA drivers (e.g., 535, 470). The issues do not occur with the
Nouveau driver, nor do they occur with earlier kernels like 6.2, though
I did experience occasional crashes in kernel 6.5. I haven't noticed
anything revealing in the logs, other than:

[drm:nv_drm_master_set [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID
0x0100] Failed to grab modeset ownership

However, I see this error message with all kernel versions, including
kernel 6.2 which works flawlessly, so I think it's unlikely it has
anything to do with the issue.
