[Bug 1940485] Re: thermald often limits CPU frequency while on AC

2021-08-30 Thread Srinivas Pandruvada
Try these steps.
First disable thermald
#systemctl disable thermald

reboot

Then run the script
https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/blob/master/test/thermal-debug-dump-ubuntu.sh

It will generate a tar file. Upload that.
Also continue to use the system after the test and see if you see the same
issue.

[Bug 1939565] Re: kernel signed by mok failed to boot if secure boot is on

2021-08-30 Thread Ivan Hu
Follow up the tests for comment#12,

the same test kernel v5.14.0-rc7 signed with the original created key in
/var/lib/shim-signed/test_kernel will not boot up with getting the
invalid signature error.

compare the keys between /var/lib/shim-signed/test_kernel and
comment#12(/var/lib/test_ker/), the fail one(in /var/lib/shim-
signed/test_kernel) has the (1.3.6.1.4.1.2312.16.1.2) KeyUsage OID.

It seems it is because using the "Module-signing only"
(1.3.6.1.4.1.2312.16.1.2) KeyUsage OID to sign the test kernel that
cause signature verify failed.

@YC
I know the OEM projects base on the my EFI applicaiton and script to
generate/enroll MOK keys for test kernels,
https://github.com/Ivanhu5866/MokEnrollKey/blob/master/mok_testkernel_key.sh
Could you provide the exact script how the MOK has been generated/enrolled and
maybe openssl.cnf for checking?

[Bug 1942056] [NEW] /etc/cron.monthly/acct fails if wtmp not rolled monthly

2021-08-30 Thread Ian! D. Allen
Public bug reported:

The /etc/cron.monthly/acct cron script is run monthly by cron or anacron
to "perform monthly login accounting" with the /var/log/wtmp file.

The cron script only works correctly if the wtmp file is rolled exactly
monthly and gives errors otherwise. Fixing the script to do monthly
accounting on a wtmp file that is rolled on a schedule other than monthly
is non-trivial, because as written, the cron script makes three invalid
assumptions:

1. That accounting is rolled over exactly monthly.

The actual number of days of account data being saved before rolling is
settable by the local sysadmin. It could be any number of days, not only
a month. If the number of days is shorter than a month, the cron script
will lose data and incorrectly under-report the monthly login accounting.
If the number of days is longer than a month, the cron script incorrectly
looks for the data in the rolled file name wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz instead
of in the actual wtmp file where it is still accumulating.

2. That the rolled accounting file is present as wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz

If the number of days of account data being saved before rolling is
longer than a month, then the file doesn't roll over on every month end
and on a new system no rolled wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz file may exist when
the cron script runs and an error is generated about the missing file:

From: Anacron
Subject: Anacron job 'cron.monthly'
/etc/cron.monthly/acct:
couldn't open file '': No such file or directory
last: cannot open : No such file or directory

The data is still accumulating in the /var/log/wtmp file and that is
where the cron script must look.

3. That only one month of accounting data is in the wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz
file.

The cron script assumes that only one exact month of accounting data are
saved in the rotated wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz file, because the cron script
processes the whole rotated file with no date range. if log rolling is
longer one month (e.g. one year), then the current month's accounting data
will usually still be accumulating in the wtmp file, not in the wtmp.1 or
wtmp.1.gz file, and if the wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz file exists it will contain
more than a month worth of accounting (e.g. part or all of a year).
A begin and end date must be used to extract just the current month, and
the correct file name wtmp or wtmp.1 or wtmp.1.gz must be used to do it.

Fixing the above three problems in the cron script is non-trivial because
it will involve knowing the frequency of log rotation and then determining
whether the current month of accounting data are in the wtmp, wtmp.1,
or wtmp.1.gz files (or a combination, if log rolling is more frequent
than monthly) and using date ranges to extract just the current month.

The new logs still belongs to 5.13.8 so there's no panic information.
Since there's no difference on hid and input drivers between 5.13.8 and

Could you help test the following kernel and give me your test results?

[Bug 1942063] [NEW] /usr/man symlink breaks apropos man -k due to fsstnd

2021-08-30 Thread Ian! D. Allen
Public bug reported:

In the old days, man pages were stored under /usr/man. Now, they are
stored under /usr/share/man. Ubuntu systems no longer have a /usr/man,
so all our really old scripts and reflexes that look under /usr/man fail
unless you think to add the helpful symlink "ln -s share/man /usr/man".

But making that helpful symlink breaks "apropos" and "man -k" because
in /etc/manpath.config are these two different locations for the "mandb"
index database:

MANDB_MAP /usr/man/var/cache/man/fsstnd
MANDB_MAP /usr/share/man /var/cache/man

If you add the symlink for /usr/man, then the index.db file created
by "mandb" ends up under a sub-directory /var/cache/man/fsstnd where
"apropos" and "man -k" can't find it.

Of course you can add another helpful symlink "ln -s fsstnd/index.db
/var/cache/index.db" to work-around the "apropos" problem, or you can
set your "MANPATH=/usr/man", but surely it doesn't need to be a problem
in the first place.

1. Please make "apropos" and "man -k" smarter. Either they could look
in both /var/cache/man and /var/cache/man/fsstnd, or else "mandb" could
resolve the symlink /usr/man to its absolute version /usr/share/man before
looking it up in the manpath.config file and thus not create the unhelpful
"/fsstnd" sub-directory that breaks "apropos".

2. The man page for "mandb" and the manpath.config file make no
mention of the reason for the extra "/fsstnd" sub-directory. The
manpath.config file says the "FHS compliant" index.db location should
be /var/cache/man/index.db and the "FSSTND compliant" location is under
/var/catman Either remove the mysterious "/fsstnd" or explain it.

[Bug 1894017] Re: Keyboard not working

2021-08-30 Thread Hans de Goede
I just typed a long email in reply to someone asking about the keyboard
not working by email. The contents of that email are likely useful for
other people who are still experiencing the keyboard not working too, so
I've copy and pasted my entire reply below.

If you still need help with this please follow the provided debug
instructions and provide the requested info.

###

First of all lets see if we can find the root cause. Bug 1894017
is about the keyboard events being discarded in userspace, because
userspace thinks the device is folded in tablet mode with the
keyboard behind the display (and any key-presses are thus done
accidentally).

Please install evemu and then run:

sudo evemu-record

This will give you a list of available input devices. The problems
reported in bug #1894017 are caused by a false-positive
reporting of SW_TABLET_MODE with a value of 1. By one of the
following input-devices:

"Intel HID events"
"Intel HID switches"
"Intel Virtual Buttons"
"Intel Virtual Switches"

Or something like this, you can select a device by typing the
number of its /dev/input/event# node.

After selecting a device evemu-record will print which events the
device can report. If it can report SW_TABLET_MODE then the
output will also contain the current value of SW_TABLET_MODE,
if this is 1 then that is the cause.

(press CTRL+c to exit evemu-record)

But you write "seems to stop responding at random" where as with
the SW_TABLET_MODE problem I would expect it to simply not work
at all (with certain kernel versions).

So you may very well have a different problem then the one described
in launchpad issue 1894017.

What you can also try is running "sudo evemu-record" and then selecting
the "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard" keyboard. After this if you type some
keys on the keyboard they should show up in evemu-record as key-presses.

If this works, then try doing it again (over e.g. ssh, or with an
external usb kbd) when the keyboard has stopped responding. I suspect
that you will find that at this point evemu-record will also no longer
report keys, which means that the problem is happening at a lower
level.

I suspect that you will find that the problem indeed is happening at
a lower-level and that you need something like this:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=addab6febc42ed94e4eee1abbe486150e4f8b9e9
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=e5b1032a656e9aa4c7a4df77cb9156a2a651a5f9

In order to determine what is necessary to fix things I need
a number of things:

1. output of: "grep . /sys/class/dmi/id/* 2> /dev/null" run from a
terminal

2. Install acpica-tools and then run: "sudo acpidump -o acpidump.txt" and then
attach the generated acpidump.txt file to your next email

3. It would help a lot if we can go from
"seems to stop responding at random" to "stops responding when I do a,
followed by b..." some ideas here are:
3.1 perhaps it stops responding after folding the display past 180 degrees
(so a little beyond it lyinf fully flat on the table) and then back again?
3.2 perhaps it stops responding after folding the display all the way back
so that the device is fully in tablet mode; and then back to laptop mode again ?
3.3 perhaps it stops responding after a suspend/resume?

Regards,

Hans

[Bug 1940904] Re: Update the hardware support for Dell XPS 13 9300 in oem-somerville-melisa-meta

2021-08-30 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Shih-Yuan, or anyone else affected,

Accepted oem-somerville-melisa-meta into focal-proposed. The package
will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/oem-somerville-melisa-
meta/20.04~ubuntu5 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1942066] [NEW] Fractional scaling with 2 UHD and one QHD screen renders gnome-panel too short, and mouse pointer is off as well

2021-08-30 Thread Chris
Public bug reported:

Initially posted here https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/-/issues/4585#note_12590270

Affected version
Ubuntu 21.04 5.11.0-31-generic
GNOME Shell 3.38.4
Tested on Wayland

Bug summary
With 2 UHD screens(3840x2160) and one QHD screen(2560x1440), the fractional
scaling of the two UHD screens to 125 percent results in the gnome shell panels
to be too short in width on the right side. The panel does not reach the end of
the screen on the right side on the UHD monitor. The panel on the QHD monitor
is fine.
Also the mouse hovers the wrong icons, the position is translated to the left
of the actual position. In the screenshots, the actual mouse pointer hovers on
the bottom panel settings icon, but clicks would be registered on the icon left
to it. The offset increases as the mouse moves to the right.
All other applications are unaffected and work fine (Nautilus, browser, etc.).
It just affects the gnome-shell.
The bug does not occur when:

I use fractional scaling on just the two UHD screens (QHD monitor disconnected).
When I use fractional scaling to 150 percent on the two UHD screens. This
results in the same relative size to the QHD screen.

Steps to reproduce

Connected one UHD and one QHD screen.
Set the UHD screen to fractional scaling of 125 percent.
Look at the gnome panels. Move your mouse over the panels and see the wrong
icons being highlighted.

[Bug 1931612] Re: Print dialog box shows same printer twice

2021-08-30 Thread Tero Gusto
I also see this in Ubuntu 20.04 Gnome. I have installed my Brother
HL-L3270CDW printer using the official driver, for all features to be
available:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/producttop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll3270cdw_us_eu_as

Now, if I open the "Printers" dialogue, the manually installed Brother
printer instance is shown as "Brother HL-L3270CDW CUPS", as well as a
doublet called "Brother Brother HL-L3270CDW series[en]".

If I remove the automatically added printer, it immediately re-appears.

See also these two issues, where many Ubuntu 20.04 users see an already
installed printer twice, so it seems quite a few users are affected by
this:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/996020/cannot-stop-network-printers-are-being-automatically-added
https://askubuntu.com/questions/345083/how-do-i-disable-automatic-remote-printer-installation

Things I tried, suggested on pages above:

#1, With this, Libreoffice Write stalls for 30-40 seconds:
enable-dbus=no

#2 This didn't make any difference:
sudo systemctl stop cups-browsed
sudo systemctl disable cups-browsed

Shows same printer twice:
Printers (via Ubuntu GUI)
Image Viewer (default, with Ubuntu)
LibreOffice Write

Shows only the correct printer:
Firefox (and other browsers)

Like Timur Tabi (timur-tabi) wrote on 2021-06-14:

> The GTK developers tell me that this is fixed in the latest version of
libgtk. How do I upgrade libgtk to the latest version on Ubuntu 20.04?
Is there a way I can pull in an update for just this package from a
newer version of Ubuntu, without breaking everything else?

Is there a way we can try this latest version of libgtk on Ubuntu 20.04?

[Bug 1461834] Re: 1024-bit signing keys should be deprecated

2021-08-30 Thread Bob Freeman
> GPG does not provide a way for APT to validate key lengths when the
signature is verified, so we did all we could do here.

Some pages, like https://launchpad.net/~fnu/+archive/ubuntu/main-fnu/
say "Signing key: 1024R" when you click on "Technical details about this
PPA". So launchpad clearly knows, and at the very least it *must* put a
big warning on such pages, so as not to fool users into compromising the
security of their computers. It's not true to say there's nothing
launchpad can do.

Since the underlying problem is clearly real, why is this launchpad bug
still 'New' and not 'Confirmed' after more than 6 years 2 months?

Hello and thank you for the report! Oddly enough, this is an Ubuntu
translation issue, where some German ended up sneaking into the English
translation. It’s fixed for the next release, but I guess they didn’t
backport it to 20.10 yet.

2021-08-30 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for the suggestion, some questions

> The build generates the locales it needs.

How does that work, to generate a locale it needs the entry
/var/lib/locales/supported.d which is part of the langpack to exists no?

> isn't actually used by anything in Ubuntu excluding the remnants of Unity

so it's used by unity still? if so we need to get that fixed before we
remove the patch.

It also feels like a change probably better done at the start of a cycle than
after feature freeze

[Bug 1940723] Re: shim-signed fails to install if grub disk config is incorrect

We are using the "rest" api. Storage profiles look something like:

 {

"publisher": "canonical",
"offer": "0001-com-ubuntu-server-focal",
"sku": "20_04-lts",
"version": "latest"
  },

  "lun": 0,
  "managedDisk": {
"storageAccountType": "StandardSSD_LRS"
  },
  "caching": "ReadOnly",

}

Data disk storageAccountType can also be "Premium_LRS", Disk size varies
up between 4, 8, 128, 256, 512 and 1024.

We are configuring the data disk like this:
mkfs.xfs -f /dev/sdc
mkdir -p /var/lib/rabbitmq
uuid=$(blkid -s UUID -o value /dev/sdc)
echo "UUID=$uuid /var/lib/rabbitmq xfs defaults,noatime 0 0" >> /etc/fstab

[Bug 1925261] Re: memory leak on AWS kernels when using docker

2021-08-30 Thread Tim Gardner
Hi Paul - I'm having trouble figuring out exactly which kernel you're
using. The backport of commit a308c71bf1e6e19cc2e4ced31853ee0fc7cb439a
("mm/gup: Remove enfornced COW mechanism") to Focal:linux-aws
5.4.0-1056.59 is not clean, and doesn't look correct. There are likely
prerequisite patches required before
a308c71bf1e6e19cc2e4ced31853ee0fc7cb439a can be applied. I'm leery of
patching the mm subsystem too much since it could have unintended side
effects.

Have you considered using the Focal:linux-aws-5.11 kernel ? I understand
that could be a big change.

[Bug 1939430] Re: Black display on AU Lenovo Ideapad D330 Two-in-one

2021-08-30 Thread Alexander Smirnov
I have the same issue with my device as well. I've tried many different
distributions. Ubuntu doesn't output video pretty much at all. Fedora runs
almost fine with Wayland, even screen orientation is proper. But the tablet
becomes sort of like a Russian roulette, since it doesn't really output
anything once in a while, which is really strange.
If there is anything I can upload to help solve this issue, I would be happy to
do so.

This hit me trying to run a container upgrade in an environment where
snapd wasn't running. Not a supported situation I'm sure but the extra
logging would be good - just capturing the "snap debug connectivity"
output and dumping to log would be fine..

[Bug 1899800] Re: Runtime deadlock: pthread_cond_signal failed to wake up pthread_cond_wait due to a bug in undoing stealing

2021-08-30 Thread Isaac Gremmer
Evgeny Morozov (evgeny0), just letting you know that we experienced a
similar garbage collector hanging issue with .Net Core 3.1. Our webapi
would hang anywhere between 20s and 400s. As a temporary solution we
switched to the Workstation garbage collection mode, and that is not
experiencing the same hanging issue for us. It's worth a try if you
need a temporary solution.

[Bug 1940543] Re: Show Hidden Files does not persist and even resets during the same session

2021-08-30 Thread Paul White
Jeremy, *all* Ubuntu releases have used the GNOME desktop. 'nautilus' is
the GNOME file manager which appears to users as the 'Files'
application. Assigning to the nautilus package as you originally seem to
have intended although another component of the GNOME desktop might
actually be at fault. Perhaps, gnome-settings-daemon?

I'm sure a member of the Desktop team will be along shortly to advise
you further.

[Bug 1940771] Re: Alt+Tab not working

2021-08-30 Thread Paul White
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1933996 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1933996

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug 1933996, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you
can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in
the other report.

Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.

By the way, whenever you see a terminal command that instructs you to
type 'pkgname' you should type the name of the package affected and not
'pkgname'.

Hope that helps.
