[Bug 1895131] Re: Groovy Desktop *BREAKS* the most common method of creating UEFI bootable drives for Ubuntu installation

2020-09-16 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

Steve Langasek wrote:

At least the ISO would comply to the specs, although this is in no way
mandatory for boot success. :))

> this does not address the /EFI/BOOT consideration at this point

Akeo has a valid point with demanding support for the method of unpacking
the ISO content to a FAT filesystem. Not only is it less dangerous than
our flat image copy onto the whole USB stick, but it is also something
that MS-Windows users are used to.

The price for having a copy of the EFI partition tree in the ISO should
be bearable.

On the other hand, this won't work with legacy BIOS (at least not without
tricky post-processing of ISOLINUX) and it invites problems with filenames.

This brings me to a question about .deb file names.
I see in
  https://packages.debian.org/sid/allpackages?format=txt.gz
that many packages have version texts with ":". Like
  a2ps (1:4.14-5 [alpha, amd64, ...
But the .deb file of a2ps does not show the "1:" part:
  http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/a2ps/a2ps_4.14-5_amd64.deb

Being a mere sponsored uplader, i fail to find the description how the
version gets transmogrified before becomming part of the .deb file name.
If it is clear that no ":" can sneak in via version, this risk about FAT
filenames would be much reduced.
(There remains the risk of stubborn package maintainers, though.)

I understand from Akeo's initial protest that currently the filenames in
Ubuntu ISOs are not an obstacle for the copy method which he defends.
Nevertheless, it would be re-assuring if there was a rule or algorithm
which prevents ":" from getting into .deb names.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

[Bug 1895329] Re: when booting cloned live drive 3rd partition is created without file system

2020-09-16 Thread sudodus
This bug is still alive when tested with the current daily Ubuntu Groovy
iso file cloned to a USB drive and tested in a Dell Precision M4800.

This iso file is improved in many other ways, but this bug remains to be
fixed. Maybe there is some kind of race condition, that affects drives,
that were not wiped before cloning.

I have the same issue on ubuntu 20.04 with Ryzen 5 3600 + Nvidia GTX
1050ti. It freezes several times per a day. (kernel: 5.4.0-47). I tried
using lightdm instead of gdm3 but it is the same.

[Bug 1886148] Re: failure to boot groovy daily

2020-09-16 Thread sudodus
I started testing with my Dell Precision M4800 with a 4th generation
Intel Core i7-4810MQ CPU, and its works

- to clone the current Ubuntu Groovy iso file to a USB drive and make
the Dell Precision M4800 boot both in BIOS mode and UEFI mode. See the
attached file :-)

- But there is no file system in the third partition (Bug #1895329).

I will continue the testing with other computers ...

[Bug 1895576] Re: boot-and-services in tests-in-lxd autopkgtest fails in groovy on s390x

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Also please do note that while almost all of the recent tests failed - almost
all of the packages already migrated. Why is that - there is no test hint in
place.
For example gdm3/3.37.90-1ubuntu1 and iptables/1.8.4-3ubuntu3 (but more than
just those, policykit-1, dpdk, util-linux, ...) NEVER had a valid test [1], but
they migrated to groovy-release.
That seems even more wrong, any idea why/how that happened?

There might be a follow up issue of people using tools that "retry
everything that had no good run" but since somehow things magically
migrated the recent long retry-lists mostly contain packages that are
already migrated.

For the sake of seeing if it might be "blunt retries" and since the s390x test
queue is empty I'm retrying it multiple times (hopefully those won't be
coalesced).
The last not-yet weird-migrated entry is apparmor.

[Bug 1891151] Re: md: improve IO accounting

2020-09-16 Thread Mariusz Tkaczyk
For 5.8 this is a simple backport with one conflict caused by function
md_make_request() renamed to md_submit_bio(). Then it can be easily
cherry picked to 5.4 but will need a change to use
generic_{start,end}_io_acct() instead of disk_{start,end}_io_acct(). I
can send you the backported patches if you wish.

[Bug 1895576] Re: boot-and-services in tests-in-lxd autopkgtest fails in groovy on s390x

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Old hints we only had:

# failing due to multiple reasons LP: #1892358
force-badtest systemd/246-2ubuntu1
# failing due to livecd-rootfs creating broken LXD images LP: #1877078
force-reset-test systemd/246.2-1ubuntu1

But was then removed in
revno: 4988
committer: Steve Langasek
branch nick: hints-ubuntu
timestamp: Fri 2020-09-11 13:38:38 -0700
message:
drop unused hints; fix typo in package name

Maybe that rule let the packages pass that I wondered about, but it is unclear
what made 246.4-1ubuntu1 itself pass as there was no good run of that either
?!?.

Overall for now it seems to me that we'd have to add:
force-badtest systemd/246.4-1ubuntu1/s390x

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
The retries were reproducible failing as well.

[09:20] rbalint: btw the test on s390x really seems still broken
[09:20] we need either a fix or a test hint
[09:21] --> falcojr (~falcojr@184.55.64.152) has joined this channel.
[09:24] cpaelzer, i'm ok with the hint and i've retriggered the tests
with cryptsetup and glibc to see if they still help
[09:25] ok rbalint, given you are the maintainer and you agree I
think I'll prep a hint and once you ack there (for an audit trail) we can push
it
[09:27] cpaelzer, thanks, i'm also working on the next systemd point
release but it shows regressions so it will take a few days

[Bug 1895665] Re: PulseAudio automatically switches from HDMI 2 after display sleep

2020-09-16 Thread Andrii Puhalevich
After #2 it prefers HDMI 2 when its connected, thanks @hui.wang.
But seems that anyway it prefers internal analog audio instead of digital audio.
Will observe more to understand new behavior after reboots, suspends and locks.

[Bug 1895781] Re: ~/.gnomerc is not loaded anymore at startup

2020-09-16 Thread Kentaro
I think we should not post this bug report to the upstream's BTS because
this bug only occus on Ubuntu.

Here are some background info. '55gnome-session_gnomerc' is created by
Debian and not included in the original tarball of gnome-session, and it
perfectly works on Debian.

So why it fails on Ubuntu? Ubuntu's 'ubuntu-session' package provides
'/usr/share/xsessions/ubuntu.desktop' file that executes gnome-session
by the following command line:

env GNOME_SHELL_SESSION_MODE=ubuntu /usr/bin/gnome-session --systemd
--session=ubuntu

For comparison, on Debian, '/usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop' simply
calls '/usr/bin/gnome-session'.

In conclusion, 1) Ubuntu activates /usr/bin/gnome-session in a non-
standard way, and 2) 55gnome-session_gnomerc does not expect it.

[Bug 1886148] Re: failure to boot groovy daily

2020-09-16 Thread sudodus
- A Lenovo V130 finds the Linpus Lite boot option, but when selected it
skips directly to the internal drive's grub menu (with dual boot Ubuntu
and Windows). Back to square one.

- A Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 19w boots both in UEFI mode with *secure
boot* and in BIOS mode.

- An old Lenovo X131e with Intel i3 boots both in UEFI mode and in BIOS
mode.

- An HP Probook 6450b with Intel i5 boots both in UEFI mode and in BIOS
mode.

Summary: There is a big improvement. The various computers tested so far
with one exception, can boot both in BIOS mode and UEFI mode (also with
secure boot, when that was tested).

[Bug 1895799] [NEW] pkgstripfiles doesn't respect override_dh_installchangelogs targets

2020-09-16 Thread Peter J. Mello
Public bug reported:

During the course of preparing to satisfy an upstream RFP on the Debian
BTS WNPP metapackage, I encountered some uncouth behavior on the part of
pkgstripfiles, which is shipped by this package and almost entirely
undocumented (no mention in the package description and no man page
shipped).

As this is the first iteration of a Debian package it only has the
single changelog entry, and so I decided to use an
override_dh_installchangelogs target in debian/rules to cause dh to
rename and compress the ChangeLog.md and include it with the other
pieces of documentation. This decision is supported by Debian Policy
Section 12, Subsection 7[1], added with Version 4.2.0 on August 2018.
The target invoked dh_installchangelogs manually with the filename of
the upstream changelog as the only argument and it performs as intended
when called manually.

However when the full package build process is performed, the upstream
changelog was not present in the built package. A review of the build
log revealed that pkgstripfiles had removed it just prior to completion
of the build. This is not a good outcome on several levels, among them:

  - As Ubuntu is a downstream fork, any packaging behavior which subverts
published Debian Policy should behave as an "opt-in" function and should take
care to announce itself even during scripted invocations so established
workflows aren't cryptically subverted and cost users increased time spent
simply to identify the culprit.
  - Documentation should exist to explain the behavior and the logic behind its
inclusion in the packaging process, placed where users are most likely to look
for it. In this case a man page at pkgstripfiles(1) would've been lovely, or
even one for the entire package at pkgbinarymangler(8) seems warranted at a
minimum. The fact that the other executables in the package and their
configuration files are described briefly in the package description but this
one was not felt like dirty pool.
  - The executable should have a HEREDOC to produce in response to invocation
with a -h/--help flag explaining its usage. In a brief skim of its shell logic
I saw no option parsing at all, which was a shame because I had no quarrel with
its other behaviors during packaging and would've happily written another
override target into debian/rules to allow it to remain in the dh sequence with
a flag that deactivated only its internal 'clean_upstream_changelogs' function.
That wasn't even possible from within the likewise undocumented .conf file it
has in /etc/pkgbinarymangler. It seems logical that all the script's internal
functions should have command line options that explicitly control their
activation or lack thereof for single invocations, and they should all have
counterparts in the .conf file to effect those changes to its behavior
permanently.
  - Ideally it would have the necessary logic to parse the obvious constructs
in debian/rules for override targets related to its internal functions and turn
those functions off which might impede the maintainer's work without
intervention.

This was experienced on a system running the Kubuntu 20.10 "Groovy
Gorilla" development release.

Relevant package versions:
 * dpkg - 1.20.5ubuntu1
 * debhelper - 13.2ubuntu1
 * pkgbinarymangler - 146

[Bug 1895803] [NEW] uvcvideo: add mapping for HEVC payloads

2020-09-16 Thread Jesse Sung
Public bug reported:

== Impact ==
Add mapping for HEVC so that uvcvideo can support the format.

== Fixes ==
The commit "media: uvcvideo: Add mapping for HEVC payloads", which is already
in the maintainer tree:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/11577395/
https://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git/commit/?id=40b222b56ea81aa636a4aa7a84939786369e726b

For 4.15 we also need the "media: videodev2.h: Add v4l2 definition for
HEVC" from mainline.

== Regression Potential ==
Low since the patch only introduces a new format.

build-essential is a metapackage that doesn't change which compilers are
used, thus autopkgtest regressions identified, could not have been
caused by build-essential rebuild itself.

retried all of those tests.

[Bug 1895811] [NEW] Keyboard Autoswitch ceases to work after each and every reboot/logout

2020-09-16 Thread sm8ps
Public bug reported:

(Cf. my report https://discourse.ubuntubudgie.org/t/keyboard-autoswitch-
ceases-to-work-after-each-and-every-reboot/4160)

I have Keyboard Autoswitch added to a panel and it does work the way it
is intended as long as I don’t shut the computer down. After any reboot
the the applet is still present among the panel items but does not
function. I have to delete it from the panel and re-add in order to make
it work.

Addendum: A logout is (of course) enough to trigger the erroneous
behaviour.

Ubuntu Budgie team Member fossfreedom pointetd out that this bug seems
to be fixed since a short while. It would be great if the fix could be
backported as it does affect primary desktop usability.

[Bug 1895382] Re: Ability to install 2 or more versions at once

2020-09-16 Thread Colin Watson
@skiphopjump, it's not OK to make personal attacks on other Launchpad
users this way (see https://ubuntu.com/community/code-of-conduct, but
also basic common courtesy). Julian already warned you (I thought
rather mildly in the circumstances) that your language was
inappropriate, but you've been continuing to make aggressive comments
anyway.

I'm therefore suspending your Launchpad account. It can be reactivated
if you commit to behaving civilly (you'll get a contact address when you
next try to log in) and to retracting your attacks on individual
developers here.

[Bug 1894338] Re: [Dell Inspiron 7570][Samsung Earphones Tuned by AKG] Volume control buttons don't work

2020-09-16 Thread JasonSome
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

My earphones are the one coming with Samsung Galaxy S8 (here:
  https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/mobile-accessories/phones/samsung-
earphones-tuned-by-akg--gray-eo-ig955bsegus) and on my Ubuntu 18.04
(dual-boot with Windows 10, Secure Boot enabled)

Trying to set the volume from my earphones' controls doesn't work, no
modification on the volume, the sound bar on Ubuntu doesn't appear in
order to indicate volume change. I would like to change the master
volume, or whatever my common laptop controls do when I up/down the
volume controls on my earphones, like it happens on Windows 10. Why does
the erroneous behavior of being unable to set volume from my earphones
  happen?

[Bug 1895329] Re: when booting cloned live drive 3rd partition is created without file system

2020-09-16 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
It could be a race, this is the code that creates the partition and
filesystem:

echo "start=$start" | sfdisk --no-reread -q $DEVICE -a || return
for d in ${DEVICE}$newpartno ${DEVICE}p$newpartno ${DEVICE}-part$newpartno;
do
if [ -e $d ]; then
mkfs.ext4 -q -L "$(root_persistence_label)" -F $d
break
fi
done
udevadm trigger
udevadm settle

But my understanding is that sfdisk (with the options we use here)
doesn't return until it has told the kernel about the new partitions.

I also doubt that the changes to image mastering made a difference here
and suspect it was some other change that coincidentally happened around
the same time but who knows. (If the partition wasn't being created, I
could quite easily believe the mastering changes would make a
difference). I'll see if I can reproduce on my laptop tomorrow.

[Bug 1894338] Re: [Dell Inspiron 7570][Samsung Earphones Tuned by AKG] Volume control buttons don't work

2020-09-16 Thread JasonSome
The result of my experiments using that testing kernel was: the headset
volume up/down button worked, but only when a manual keyboard volume
up/down stroke preceded. I speculate that this has got to do with some
auto-disabling of the internal laptop port after some time (probable,
because a very slight hissing sound when no sound is playing on system
stops after ~30sec of such a "no sound" on Windows too and then the same
required manual keyboard up/down stroke is required before the jack gets
"re-enabled" (I guess?) and receiving headset up/down volume controls
successfully). However, you may know better of such stuff.

[Bug 1892454] Re: [MIR] libostree-1-1

2020-09-16 Thread Didier Roche
[Summary]
MIR team ACK under the condition that:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libselinux/+bug/1892455 question is
answered (for me as well, this component is already in main).
- Which binary package will be needed to be promoted (the minimum set)? It
seems only that libflatpak0 is only depending on libostree-1-1. Can you confirm
this is the expected one to be promoted and only this one?
- Will need a security review (already assigning, even if the questions needs
to be answered in parallel)

TODOs:
- answer the 2 questions above
- one suggestion below for running more tests on non s390x.
- have the security team +1

[Duplication]
There is no other package in main providing the same functionality.

[Dependencies]
no other Dependencies to MIR due to this if limited to libostree-1

[Embedded sources and static linking]
- no embedded source present
- no static linking

[Security]
OK:
- history of CVEs does not look concerning (see comment in description)
- does not use webkit1,2
- does not use lib*v8 directly
- does not parse data formats
- does not open a port
- does not process arbitrary web content
- does not use centralized online accounts
- does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop (only for tests)
- does not deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc)

Problems:
ostree-boot has a some code executing as root (systemd generator and systemd
system service) and interacts with selinux. It’s not part of what is supposed
to be promoted. However, as we have the rule "if the source is in main, you can
get other binary packages part of this source promoted without a MIR", it will
need to be checked this cycle.

[Common blockers]
OK:
- does not FTBFS currently
- does have a test suite that runs at build time
- test suite fails will fail the build upon error.
- does have a test suite that runs as autopkgtest
- The package has a team bug subscriber
- no translation present, but none needed for this case (user visible)?
- not a python/go package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard

[Packaging red flags]
OK:
- Ubuntu does not carry a delta
- symbols tracking is in place
- d/watch is present and looks ok
- Upstream update history is good
- Debian/Ubuntu update history is good
- Debian is on the current release, we are one release behind due to sync
freeze.
- promoting this does not seem to cause issues for MOTUs that so far for who
maintained the package
- no massive Lintian warnings (overrides are well explained)
- d/rules is rather clean
- Does not have Built-Using

Note: the package is very well maintained, and any override, changes in rules,
that needs explanation are commented.
One flaky test is skipped, with a long description which demonstrates that this
has been thought about (but not reported upstream maybe?).

TODO:
- it may be interesting to set OSTREE_TEST_ALLOW_RANDOM on non s390x from the
description in package build and autopkgtests. Mind checking that with Debian?

[Upstream red flags]
OK:
- no Errors/warnings during the build
- no incautious use of malloc/sprintf (as far as I can check it)
- no use of sudo, gksu, pkexec, or LD_LIBRARY_PATH
- no use of user nobody
- no use of setuid (apart in tests)
- no important open bugs (crashers, etc) in Debian or Ubuntu
- no dependency on webkit, qtwebkit, seed or libgoa-*
- no embedded source copies
- not part of the UI for extra checks

[Bug 1895816] [NEW] gnome-shell freezing (and gdm restarting) -> xorg crash file found

2020-09-16 Thread Eike
Public bug reported:

I have a problem with gnome-shell and gdm. My shell sometimes (not
reproducible atm) freezes. Under some circumstances gdm will be

exited properly.

support a more constrained boot chain. Specifically, UEFI 2011 signed
Canonical shim can be booted universally on most hardware but also means
other shims from other vendors can boot too. But if we provide a shim
signed by Canonical CA, one can remove MS UEFI 2011 key from db, add
Canonical CA, and thus only boot shims provided by canonical. In such
scenario machine will only be able to boot Windows and Ubuntu, and no
other Linux. Furthermore Windows production key can be removed from db
as well, if one wishes to disable booting Windows too.

Certain hardware manufacturers ship Canonical CA key in db already. Thus
out-of-the-box shipping dual-signed shim would improve security there,
by reducing attack-vectors / having more constrained TPM measurements.

I am requesting FFe to ship dualsigned shim as
/usr/lib/shim/shimx64.efi.signed and use it by default.

Regression potential is as follows:

 - very old / initial implementations of Secureboot using very old UEFI
SB specs from 2008 do not support multiple signatures on .efi binary.
Thus this change, may result in certain older firmware unable to boot.
It is not clear with hardware doesn't support multiple signatures. And
whether or not the order of signatures helps at all (i.e. if MS
signature or Canonical one is first)

Mitigation strategy in case of regressions:

 - revert back to single-signed shim

Re: [Bug 1895665] Re: PulseAudio automatically switches from HDMI 2 after display sleep

2020-09-16 Thread Andrii Puhalevich
Right. I just tested:
Selected digital device.
Selected HDMI 2 for digital device.
Disconnected HDMI 2 from laptop (digital device automatically switched to
HDMI 1, sound automatically switched to internal analog audio).
Connected HDMI 2 to laptop (digital device automatically switched to HDMI 2
- this resolves the main part of the issue, but sound still left on
internal analog audio).

[Bug 1894780] Re: Oops and hang when starting LVM snapshots on 5.4.0-47

2020-09-16 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
After reverting commit 79ffe7107b13042c69c4a06394175362121b06b5
(upstream commit d38a2b7a9c939e6d7329ab92b96559ccebf7b135) ("mm:
memcg/slab: fix memory leak at non-root kmem_cache destroy"), things
seem to go back to normal.

The probable reason this one causes a problem is because it has:

@@ -326,6 +326,14 @@ int slab_unmergeable(struct kmem_cache *s)
if (s->refcount < 0)
return 1;

+#ifdef CONFIG_MEMCG_KMEM
+ /*
+* Skip the dying kmem_cache.
+*/
+   if (s->memcg_params.dying)
+   return 1;
+#endif
+
return 0;
 }

So, this causes the same-sized slab to become unmergeable, and when a
new slab is created, it will fail creating the sysfs entry.

I haven't investigated why memcg is at play here, and why this one would
be dying, that would involve memcgs being removed during the operation.
But not allowing merges will certainly cause problems here.

The other issue is that this memcg code has been totally
replaced/discarded on 5.9, so it will make things interesting trying to
upstream a proper fix here.

But considering the commit fix a leak and here we will have a different
leak and failures to create slabs, the revert is preferable for now.

Cascardo.

[Bug 1895137] Re: [MIR] rpi-eeprom

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
** Also affects: raspberrypi-userland (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package is in proposed, pending a correction to Architecture to permit it
to migrate to multiverse (LP: #1884748).

  [Rationale]
The package is required for updating the boot EEPROM on the Raspberry Pi 4.

  [Security]
I am not aware of any open CVEs against the tools in rpi-eeprom.

  [Quality assurance]
The package is extensively used upstream on Raspbian, and is obviously
actively maintained there. There is no meaningful test suite included in the
package, but the contents of the package are regularly exercised in image
testing (and boot EEPROM testing).

  [UI standards]
Manual pages are included for both utilties included in the package
(rpi-eeprom-config and rpi-eeprom-update), but localization is missing from
both utilities at present. However, most users will never use these utilities
directly. Rather, they are typically launched by a systemd service on boot
which automatically applies new versions of the boot EEPROM.

  [Dependencies]
The package depends on binutils, python3, and pciutils, all of which are
already in main. It also depends on linux-firmware-raspi2 and
libraspberrypi-bin which are the subject of other MIRs (LP: #1867813, LP:
#1895133).

  [Standards compliance]
The package installs its scripts under /usr/bin.

  [Maintenance]
The package is maintained by the Ubuntu Foundations team.

  [Background information]
As this is a dependency for keeping the boot EEPROM on the Raspberry Pi 4 up
to date, the intention is to install this by default in all pi-related images
going forward.
+
+
+ ---
+
+
+ [Availability]
+ The package is already in universe.
+
+ [Rationale]
+ The package is depended upon by the new raspi-common seed, for inclusion in
all pi related images. The reason for its inclusion in the seed is that the
libraspberrypi-bin package provides the vcgencmd and dtoverlay utilities which
are both required by rpi-eeprom (the subject of a separate MIR, LP: #1895137)
for updating the boot EEPROM on the Raspberry Pi 4.
+
+ The libraspberrypi0 package is a dependency of libraspberrypi-bin and
+ both are built from the raspberrypi-userland source package.
+
+ [Security]
+ I am not aware of any open CVEs against the tools in libraspberrypi-bin or
the libraries in libraspberrypi0.
+
+ It may be worth noting that the -bin package installs a udev rule (in
+ /lib/udev/10-local-rpi.rules) permitting members of the "video" group
+ access to /dev/vchiq, which is required for all the VC related utilities
+ (including vcgencmd, raspivid, and raspistill) to be operated without
+ root privileges.
+
+ [Quality assurance]
+ The package is extensively used upstream on Raspbian, and is obviously
actively maintained there. There is no meaningful test suite included in the
package, but the contents of the package are regularly exercised in image
testing (and boot EEPROM testing).
+
+ [UI standards]
+ I've added manual pages for all the utilities I'm able to, but localization
is missing from all utilities at present. However, most users will never use
these utilities directly (bar, perhaps, the raspivid and raspistill utilities
for the camera module). Instead the most common scenario is that the utilities
will be used (invisibly) by other scripts (e.g. rpi-eeprom-update) for
maintenance purposes like manipulating the boot EEPROM.
+
+ [Dependencies]
+ As noted above, libraspberrypi-bin depends on libraspberrypi0. It also
depends on device-tree-compiler and libc6, both of which are already in main.
libraspberrypi0 in turn merely depends on libc6.
+
+ [Standards compliance]
+ The package installs its binaries under /usr/bin, and its libraries under
/usr/lib. Upstream does not version their API, so the libraries are unversioned.
+
+ [Maintenance]
+ The package is maintained by the Ubuntu Foundations team.
+
+ [Background information]
+ As noted above, the package is a dependency of the recently added
raspi-common seed
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-release/2020-September/005086.html).
As it is a dependency for keeping the boot EEPROM on the Raspberry Pi 4 up to
date, the intention is to install this by default in all pi-related images
going forward.

[Bug 1895821] [NEW] No voice typing with chromium snap at google docs

2020-09-16 Thread Malte Deiseroth
Public bug reported:

The voice typing feature of google docs is a online speech-to-text
converter. It can be found on any google docs document under Toosl>Voice
Typing and it only runs with Chrome or Chromium.

However while I can use this feature using the google chromium.deb
build. I cdoesn't work on the chromium snap. Instead the browser
constantly opens and closes the access to the microphone, resulting in a
flickering microphone icon in the top right of the screen.

The fact that this works with the .deb but not with the snap make me
think it is a snap related issue.

[Bug 1894780] Re: Oops and hang when starting LVM snapshots on 5.4.0-47

2020-09-16 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ kmemcaches will fail to be created after they have just been removed but not
completely ripped out. This will cause some drivers (like lvm snapshots) to
properly work and cause kernel traces to go on the logs.
+
+ [Test case]
+ See comment #9.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ The fix reverts a commit, so we go back to a state of a previously released
kernel, where a leak was possible. The regression here, though, is better than
the impact that will also lead to a different leak and prevent users from
correctly using LVM snapshots.

[Bug 1800836] Re: systemd-networkd doesn't process IPv6 RA properly

2020-09-16 Thread Kjetil Torgrim Homme
This is still happening with 237-3ubuntu10.42 in Bionic. RA routes
announced with lifetime of 0s are not removed. It is the firewall which
used to be the default router which (continously) announce these 0s
lifetimes to make sure there are no issues with failover.

[Bug 1886148] Re: failure to boot groovy daily

2020-09-16 Thread sudodus
mkusb version 12.6.1 (mkusb-dus) can create persistent live drives, that
boot both in BIOS mode and UEFI mode, also with secure boot from the
current daily Ubuntu Groovy iso file.

I used the setting 'usb-pack-efi'. This works also with a Lenovo V130 in
UEFI with secure boot, so there is a work-around for the problematic
computer. The setting 'usb-pack-efi' uses grub from previous LTS
releases to create the boot systems for BIOS mode and UEFI mode.

[Bug 1895137] Re: [MIR] rpi-eeprom

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
[Summary]
This one is hard to decide as it has binary blobs in the form of
the RPI firmware. Usually for normal package that would be a denial
reason, but other microcode delivering packages work the same way.
I'll need to discuss and co-ack with other MIR Team members and
also need security to have a word.

For now call it "ok enough to get security review", but there are
enough todos listed for you to start right away - for that I'll also
mark it incomplete. Set it back to new once the mentioned TODOs are
done for re-evaluation.

This does need a security review, so I'll assign ubuntu-security

List specific binary packages to be promoted to main: rpi-eeprom

Info:
In this cases this isn't from Debian but from Raspbian and the upstream
is https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-eeprom

Required TODOs:
- Get Foundations-bug subscribed to the package(s)
- Even not being used there avoid packages to totally fail on install
and breaking apt thereby. Please get it to be gracefully-unusable there.
Raspbian only publishes for Pi, we do have more arm* models to support.
On non Pi arm* HW this is on install:
Unpacking rpi-eeprom (7.8-0ubuntu2) ...
Setting up linux-firmware-raspi2 (1.20200601+arm64-0ubuntu3) ...
Error: missing /boot/firmware, did you forget to mount it?
dpkg: error processing package linux-firmware-raspi2 (--configure):
 installed linux-firmware-raspi2 package post-installation script
subprocess returned error exit status 1
Setting up binutils-common:arm64 (2.35-3ubuntu1) ...
Setting up libctf-nobfd0:arm64 (2.35-3ubuntu1) ...
Setting up libraspberrypi0 (0~20200520+git2fe4ca3-0ubuntu2) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of rpi-eeprom:
 rpi-eeprom depends on linux-firmware-raspi2 (>= 1.20190819); however:
Package linux-firmware-raspi2 is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing package rpi-eeprom (--configure):
- The Diff from 7.5-1 to our 7.8-0 can't be explained by the changelog.
It seems we have much more than just the new version.
Could you please ensure that the changelog clearly indicates what our Delta
  over Raspbian is?
- You refer to an empty VCS, having the changes commit-by-commit in this or
another one (depending where you push) woud be great. Please fix the VCS
entry to point at such a valid repo.

Recommended TODOs:
- Please investigate if it makes sense to be arch:all since it depends on
  arm only packages:
rpi-eeprom : Depends: libraspberrypi-bin but it is not installable
Depends: linux-firmware-raspi2 (>= 1.20190819) but it is not installable
- Please clarify the Focal situation, the same version is stuck in proposed
  there as well.
- Any chance to add some tests verifying the functional integrity of the package
to run at build or autopkgtest time?
- Please consider updating to a newer version before you SRU things to >=Focal

[Duplication]
OK:
We don't have this package or a similar function. Also The Internet is full
of people asking for it - so it is important nad not otherwise available.
There is no other package in main providing the same functionality.

[Dependencies]
OK:
- no other Dependencies to MIR due to this
Only libraspberrypi-bin out of raspberrypi-userland which is part of this MIR
- no -dev/-debug/-doc packages that need exclusion

[Embedded sources and static linking]
OK:
- no embedded source present
- no static linking (well roms, but nothing that this rule tried to avoid)

Problems:
- The ROMs are all prebuilt. Usually this is a "hard no" as Debian packages
shall be servicable and buildable from source so one knows what is in there.
OTOH packges of similar scope like intel-microcode behave no different :-/
Functional maintenance will be your job so you only can make your own job
harder by not having sources, but this needs a security review to make sure
  they consider this serviceable.

[Security]
OK:
- history of CVEs does not look concerning
- does not run a daemon as root
- does not use webkit1,2
- does not use lib*v8 directly
- does not parse data formats
- does not open a port
- does not process arbitrary web content
- does not use centralized online accounts
- does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop
- does not deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc)

Problems:
- changes SW stacks below the control of the latter Linux system.
  This needs a security evaluation.

[Common blockers]
OK:
- does not FTBFS currently
- The package has a team bug subscriber
- no translation present, but none needed for this case (user visible)?
- not a python/go package, no extra constraints to consider int hat regard

Problems:
- does not have a test suite that runs at build time
- does not have a test suite that runs as autopkgtest

These are common issues with such low level things, but how would a drive
by contributor test anything. Is there a chance to get the file
test/test-rpi-eeprom-config working in a virtual environment and add some
guidance

[Bug 1892559] Re: [MIR] ccid libpam-pkcs1 libpcsc-perl opensc pcsc-tools pcsc-lite

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
## pcsc-lite ##

[Summary]
Mir Team ACK under the condition that the required TODOs are resolved.
While the owning Team should look at that security can already start
a review.

This does need a security review, so I'll assign ubuntu-security

list specific binary packages to be promoted to main: pcscd,
libpcsclite1

Clarifications:
- @Seth - the filing is done as if one would only need libpcsclite1 but Joy
said in comment #12 that pcscd is also needed.
Could you clarify which is true as the security risk increases if we add
  the daemon as well.
For now I'll go on as if the daemon would be part of it.

Required TODOs:
- The package has no team bug subscriber - please fix
- Please look into open bugs and crashes before we promote.
Do a bug-scrub and ensure we know what is outdated and no more true
and what else is still an issue. This can be seen as preview to the
latter maintenance - so don't skip all of them due to "don't have
  the HW" :-)

[Duplication]
There is no other package in main providing the same functionality.
Note: Joy checked if the other bits can do it without but it is required.
See comment #12.

[Dependencies]
OK:
- no other Dependencies to MIR due to this
- one -dev package that will be auto-promoted but no bad deps from there

[Embedded sources and static linking]
OK:
- no embedded source present
- no static linking

[Security]
OK:
- history of CVEs does not look too concerning
- does not run a daemon as root
- does not use webkit1,2
- does not use lib*v8 directly
- does not process arbitrary web content
- does not use centralized online accounts
- does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop

Problems:
- does parse data formats
- does open a port
- does deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc)

This needs a security review, before doing so please clarify if the daemon
pcscsd is part of the scope.

[Common blockers]
OK:
- does not FTBFS currently
- no translation present, but none needed for this case (user visible)?
- not a python/go package, no extra constraints to consider int hat regard

Problems:
- does not have a test suite that runs at build time
- does not have a test suite that runs as autopkgtest
We have talked about tests before, no reason to re-iterate
- The package has no team bug subscriber - please fix

[Packaging red flags]
OK:
- Ubuntu does not carry a delta
- symbols tracking is in place
- d/watch is present and looks ok
- Upstream update history is good
- Debian/Ubuntu update history is good
- the current release is packaged
- promoting this does not seem to cause issues for MOTUs that so far
  maintained the package
- no massive Lintian warnings
- d/rules is rather clean
- Does not have Built-Using

[Upstream red flags]
OK:
- no Errors/warnings during the build
- no incautious use of malloc/sprintf (as far as I can check it)
- no use of sudo, gksu, pkexec, or LD_LIBRARY_PATH
- no use of user nobody
- no use of setuid
- no important open bugs (crashers, etc) in Debian or Ubuntu
- no dependency on webkit, qtwebkit, seed or libgoa-*
- no embedded source copies
- not part of the UI for extra checks

2020-09-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Sorry, I forgot to update one section for pcsc-lite on packaging:

- important open bugs (crashers, etc) in Debian or Ubuntu

There are quite some:

Also this one should be fixed or at least checked

Validated with https://github.com/openstack-charmers/zaza-openstack-

which is a test deploying an OpenStack (including Neutron with this

[Bug 1892440] Re: Shell text is too small in mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2 (mostly on Nvidia)

2020-09-16 Thread Treviño
Sorry for the delay here, but unfortunately the work to be done in
groovy updates lead to having less time to study this issue.

However, it looks like the problem is present upstream, but our patch is
triggering it more.

So I've proposed a fix upstream
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1444) while the
ubuntu package is in progress as well.

[Bug 1895816] Re: gnome-shell freezing (and gdm restarting) -> xorg crash file found

2020-09-16 Thread Eike
I started gimp on the command line with:

gimp -c --verbose image.png

The attached file is the result.

[Bug 1895816] Re: gnome-shell freezing (and gdm restarting) -> xorg crash file found

2020-09-16 Thread Eike
It seems to be a problem with gimp and images because I can reproduce
the problem when opening gimp with any image file.
