[Bug 1737445] Re: release upgrader doesn't re-enable updates after failure

2017-12-16 Thread Simon Lambourn
I'm really sorry but I have failed to re-create the bug on my own
system. As I didn't discover the problem for at least a month, I can't
remember exactly when it occurred or what I did to make it happen. I
do remember that after the first attempt to upgrade, there was a problem
with using the "revert" button on the Software Sources application,
which re-enabled all the Artful sources even though I hadn't upgraded -
so I had to manually alter the /etc/apt/sources.list to go back to
Zesty. I'm pretty sure that I would have enabled all the Zesty sources
including updates, as the sources.list is not that complicated.

However I can't tell you how this happened, so regrettably I think I
have to withdraw the bug report (or at least ask you to do so). I
apologise for wasting your time on this one.

[Bug 1738528] [NEW] Sound applet reflects volume of different device when bluetooth device auto-connects

2017-12-16 Thread Iván Pérez
Public bug reported:

As currently set up in Ubuntu 16.04, when an audio device connects via
bluetooth, it starts being used by programs automatically. However, the
sound applet still "points to" the previously selected audio output.
Therefore, changing the volume has no immediate audible effect.

The way to change that, currently, is to go to Sound settings, select
the bluetooth device as current output (again?), and then the volume
will change.

I would expect that, when a bluetooth device is connected, it starts
being used, *and* changing the volume immediately will affect the
bluetooth device.

I googled a bit, and people have suggested [1] that the file
/etc/pulse/default.pa should contain load-module module-switch-on-
connect before the volume is restored. My installation does not have
that line, but it does have:

### Should be after module-*-restore but before module-*-detect
load-module module-switch-on-port-available

According to [1], maybe this should be listed in that file *before* the
aforementioned module-*-restore lines.

** Description changed:

As currently set up in Ubuntu 16.04, when an audio device connects via
bluetooth, it starts being used by programs automatically. However, the
sound applet still "points to" the previously selected audio output.
Therefore, changing the volume has no immediate audible effect.

The way to change that, currently, is to go to Sound settings, select
the bluetooth device as current output (again?), and then the volume
  will change.

[Bug 722201] Re: CTDB port is not aware of Ubuntu-specific NFS Settings

2017-12-16 Thread Robert Sander
Additionally it is necessary to create a file /etc/modprobe.d/lockd.conf
with this content:

 # Set the TCP port that the NFS lock manager should use.
 # port must be a valid TCP port value (1-65535).
 options lockd nlm_tcpport=599

 # Set the UDP port that the NFS lock manager should use.
 # port must be a valid UDP port value (1-65535).
 options lockd nlm_udpport=599

Lockd as a kernel process has to listen to the same port on every
machine in the CTDB cluster.

[Bug 1717995] Re: extra domains not removed from resolv.conf when VPN disconnects

2017-12-16 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
Same for me. I really don't understand how /etc/resolv.conf should be
managed in Ubuntu 17.04. I have the setup described in comment #7. I
tried to have only network-manager manage /etc/resolv.conf, but then I
loose name resolution in containers.

I think we should open a new bug report, as this one marked with "Fix
released" will never get attention. It may also something worth
investigating upstream.

[Bug 498439] Re: uprecords reports >100% uptime

2017-12-16 Thread Johan Andersson
I've also encountered this bug in current release of CentOS 7.4.1708
(3.10.0-693.11.1.el7.x86_64).
I'm running uptimed on a few units as well (Ubuntu 17.10 4.13.0-16-generic &
MacOSX 10.11.6 [15G17023] 15.6.0) - and I havn't had any problems with negative
uptime reports from those.
This problem/bug must be something that isn't always showing, since it hasnt
been fixed yet. I believe there's something 'else' that is interacting when it
shouldn't - that isn't something default in the system. I hope we, or someone,
can get to the bottom of this problem.

Thank you.

[Bug 1666260] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59 + 4.8.0-34

2017-12-16 Thread Iain Buclaw
As original poster, if I didn't continue to post oom dumps, perhaps
things started to peter out on 4.8.0-39 or later.

What was particular about the load that triggered this bug was heavy IO
putting cache pressure on ext4 on a system where there's zero locality
of reference in anything read from or written to disk (ssd backed
storage).

In any case, by May these data storage servers that had been triggering
this issue had been decommissioned and IO strategy had changed. Now
writes are written to a raw block device before being flushed to
filesystem periodically using O_DSYNC, taking ext4 disk cache out of the
equation.

The HWE kernel is now 4.10, and judging by the edge packages soon to be
4.13, so maybe its been fixed in that time. However I'm no longer able
to confirm or deny that, as there's no possible way for me to reproduce
it anyway. As per Rasmus' comment, its something that only happened on
production workloads.

[Bug 1738534] [NEW] Processor turbo dsiabled/throttled after suspend

2017-12-16 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

After suspending/resuming my laptop on battery power, I noticed choppy
video playback. I've narrowed it down to the CPU being locked to lower
frequencies after suspend/resume (only on battery). Plugging the laptop
back in does not restore the normal performance, nor does suspend/resume
after plugging it back in. The performance doesn't drop until after the
suspend/resume, I'm not sure if it is _supposed_ to throttle when on
battery, but either way the behaviour is wrong.

Doing a full shutdown and restart restores the performance to normal.

Prior to a suspend/resume cycle, cpupower reports:

$ sudo cpupower frequency-info
analyzing CPU 0:
  driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
  hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
  available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.00 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
  within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 1.26 GHz (asserted by call to kernel)
  boost state support:
Supported: yes
Active: yes
2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

Afterwards, the frequency is clamped (cpufreq-set -r --max=3.0GHz has no
effect) and turbo is disabled:

$ sudo cpupower frequency-info
analyzing CPU 0:
  driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
  hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
  available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.80 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
  within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 950 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
  boost state support:
Supported: no
Active: no
2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

Trying to re-enable turbo mode by setting the no_turbo intel_pstate
/sys/ entry back to 0 is rejected:

$ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
0
tee: /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo: Operation not permitted

However, these two commands *do* work around the problem, forcing turbo
mode back on and then restoring the normal frequency range:

sudo x86_energy_perf_policy --turbo-enable 1
sudo cpufreq-set -r --min=0.8GHz --max=3.0GHz

I also see this error in dmesg after some resumes (but the above problem
sometimes happens without this error message):

[Bug 1738534] Re: Processor turbo dsiabled/throttled after suspend

2017-12-16 Thread Shaun Crampton
Just tried another scenario. If I do the full power cycle while on
battery power, then it boots up with turbo disabled and frequency
locked. This command then seems to work (cpupower then reports turbo is
active/supported):

sudo x86_energy_perf_policy --turbo-enable 1

But this command has no effect:

sudo cpufreq-set -r --min=0.8GHz --max=3.0GHz

(Where, int he previous scenario, it did work.)

[Bug 1738535] [NEW] Setting "Output lines" in Options->Layout has no effect

2017-12-16 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install `mc` on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
2. Switch to plain VT (native Linux console) with , log-in and
start Midnight Commander with `mc`
3. Open Options->Layout setting
4. Try to change value in "Console output" -> "Output lines:" (for example
change 0 to 5)
5. Click OK.

Expected results:
console output size increases and decreases by "Output lines:" setting.

Actual results:
console output size does not change by "Output lines:" setting. On next visit
of Layout dialog, it shows "Output lines:" as 0.

Inspired by this AskUbuntu question -
https://askubuntu.com/q/986808/66509 .

Notes:

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-16 Thread Filippo Callegari
Lenovo z50-70 (20354) corrrupted bios, can modify only date and time.
Lastest version of bios allready installed.
I've only tried ubuntu 17.10. My luck is I've installed grub2, so from usb I
can load conf and boot all my operative systems. No way to do something for
rewrite from the laptop.
So, if you can boot the uefi live usb, another workaround is take the disk and
install grub (if you haven't one installed yet), and when you boot the usb
press 'c' key and load the config file for grub.

If anyone have a sane bios image, please dump it and public it, so I'll
try to reflash the image on my bios.

Regards,
Igor

[Bug 1723168] Re: snap pulsemixer use F1 gives helppage, not output

2017-12-16 Thread Oliver Grawert
This is rather unrelated to snapd ... it is an old known issue with
gnome-terminal that it captures F1 presses by default ...

http://www.cmdln.org/2010/12/28/quick-tip-disable-help-f1-in-gnome-terminal/
https://askubuntu.com/a/50250

One could argue that pulsemixer would be able to bundle its own terminal
app (xterm ?) and wrap that into the app startup command due to being a
snap, but that would be a bug against the pulsemixer snap, not against
snapd ...

This bug is coming up every single time I turn on my monitor. I play
sound with the monitor off, and sound plays up until the moment I turn
on the monitor, after which libmutter causes gnome-shell to crash. dmesg
and crash log timing coincides exactly with monitor turn on time.

better.

When attempting to run the same example with exabgp 4.0.2-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu
bionic, I get the following output:
$ python -m exabgp healthcheck --help

This program requires the python module ip_address (for python 3.3+) or ipaddr
(for python 2.6, 2.7, 3.2)
Please pip install one of them with one of the following command.
> pip install ip_address
> pip install ipaddr

So it indeed looks like the dependency is still missing.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1731792] Re: Can't install libsndfile1-dev on Ubuntu 16.04.2 x86_64

2017-12-16 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

I tried to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 16.04, but was able to install
libsndfile1-dev without similar issues. It might be that apt tried to
install an older version of the -dev package which caused a version
mismatch with libsndfile1. Could you please run `sudo apt update` to
update the package list and see if that solves the problem. If the issue
persits, could you add the output from `apt policy libsndfile1-dev` to
see which version of the dev package it tries to install?

Btw, when reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1733068] Re: Unmounted USB drives wake up on 16.04

2017-12-16 Thread paoletto
Updated the description: I tested with 14.04 and as expected everything
goes to sleep when it should and stays sleeping.

I have the serious fear this is a regression in the kernel SATA subsystem.
HOWEVER, i'm willing to test it more on 16.04.

Could someone point me at a super stripped-down version of 16.04 where one can
be absolutely certain there is no userspace daemon waking up the drives?
So that it would be possible to isolate the issue being a regression in the
kernel or not

** Description changed:

On Ubuntu 16.04, if i plug in a USB drive, then unmount it (eject
button) in nautilus, then force it to sleep (hdparm -y), the drive
  reports to be in standby:

  hdparm -C /dev/sdd

  /dev/sdd:
   drive state is: standby

However, after some time during which i have not tried to access the
drive, the drive seems to spin up again, and reports to be active again:

  hdparm -C /dev/sdd

  /dev/sdd:
   drive state is: active/idle

I have been researching on google, askubuntu, irc, but apparently nobody
has been able to tell what is that wakes up the drive. Everybody say
that if the drive is unmounted, it should stay sleeping.

Note: I also tried to add the drive partitions in fstab, so to force gvfs to
ignore the drive.
Even this failed to keep the drive sleeping.

I have not been able to test this on 14.04 yet, but 14.04 successfully
keeps internal SATA drives asleep even when mounted unless i explicitly
  access them.

One additional question i would have, at this point, is also whether there is
some tool to check what process tries to access the device.
Or some sort of tcpdump for SATA..
+
+ *UPDATE*
+ I managed to test this on 14.04, and as expected, the disk spins down almost
immediately, and stays spun down, and after approximately half hour (maybe
less) it goes in standby (disk led blinking regularly: http://gph.is/2yKy20M)
+ and stays like that.
+ Also, unlike 16.04, dmesg stays clean without repeating messages about
meaningless driver sense errors
