[Bug 1567744] Re: USB NICs get too long name for ifupdown aliases or bridge names

2016-10-12 Thread Michael Crawford
I just lost 3 days to this issue before I realized what was happening. I
realize this is an edge case, and understand the issues with fixing
this, but at least some type of better error messages would have helped
prevent that waste of time.

I was trying to setup a host to run docker with macvlan networks mapped
to vlan interfaces on a pair of USB ethernet adapters connected to a
BRIX used for testing. Couldn't get a bond on the pair to work, couldn't
figure out why, then tried for just VLAN interfaces, and that didn't
work either. Thought I was losing it, didn't seem that hard.

Not sure how I figured it out, but realized if I switched back to using
eth1, eth2 for the USB ethernet devices, using "net.ifnames=0
biosdevname=0" boot options + old-style mac-address rules to map, I
could get everything to work. But, wasn't happy with the workaround, as
I'd prefer to use the new predictable names.

I like the idea of using last 6 digits of Mac address. I thought of doing this:
sudo ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/73-usb-net-by-mac.rules
to go back to slot names, but if I plug into different ports, names change, so
no.

Perhaps some different prefix other than enx to avoid confusion,
usb123456 anyone?

[Bug 1113395] Re: mount.cifs on 13.04 fails to mount a samba share with 13: Permission Denied

2016-10-12 Thread Kruno
Migrating from Ubuntu 12.04LTS to 16.04LTS also brokes cifs mount for
me. I was having following in my fstab file:

/192.168.10.1/server_share/ /mnt/my_point cifs
iocharacterset=utf8,sec=ntlm,credentials=/home/kruno/.smbcredentials,uid=1000,gid=1000
0 0

As I read elsewhere you need to separate username and domain in
credential file. I did that too. Still having permission denied errror
when try to use "mount -a" command

I also tried to put username, domain and password directly in fstab command.
Same errror.
I'm sure that username and password is correct, because following command
properly mount drive:

mount -t cifs //192.168.10.1/server_share/ /mnt/my_point -o username=my-
username,password=my-password,domain=MYDOMAIN

Finally, found elsewhere that "mount -a -v" command can give more data.
After that I got this response:

mount.cifs kernel mount options:
ip=192.168.10.1,unc=\\192.168.10.1\server_share,iocharacterset=utf8,sec=ntlmv,uid=1000,gid=1000,user
=my-username,,domain=MYDOMAIN,pass=

Please note double "," between username and domain. Happens with both,
using credential files and direct input of username and password trough
fstab command line.

My server that I try to cennect to is still on ubuntu 12.04LTS while
client is 16.04

I hope that this bit of info can help to solve this bug

[Bug 1632601] [NEW] initramfs fails to bring up networking with multiple interfaces, even when an interface is specified

2016-10-12 Thread David Masover
Public bug reported:

Discovered in Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
in initramfs-tools version 0.122ubuntu8.3

I expect that, when I set "DEVICE=eth0" in /etc/initramfs-
tools/initramfs.conf, my system will bring up DHCP on eth0, and ignore
any other interfaces on the system (nothing is plugged into eth1), so
that it can bring up dropbear and wait for me to SSH in and unlock my
root filesystem. This would also affect anything attempting to netboot
with this version of initramfs-tools.

Instead, it ignores my DEVICE line, and instead tries and fails to bring
up DHCP on a fictional interface called "eth0 eth1". This is caused by
_multiple_ bugs in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/functions.

I'd be sending a patch, but I'm not sure where to send it.

Here's a detailed breakdown:

If the 'ip' bootarg and $IP variable is undefined, then:
* It matches the case on line 285 of 'functions': ""|*|on|any|dhcp)
* It then matches the 'if' condition on line 288: if ! echo "${IP}" | grep -qc
'BOOTIF'; then
* So we execute: DEVICE="${IP#*:*:*:*:*:*}";

It's not at all obvious why that if statement is even there, since if
$IP was BOOTIF, it wouldn't match the given case branch. Continuing:

* Since $IP was empty, $DEVICE is now empty
* Since $DEVICE is empty, on line 295: DEVICE=$(all_netbootable_devices)

$DEVICE is now "eth0 eth1", which might be fine, except:

* On line 299: for dev in "${DEVICE}"; do

This loop would do the right thing -- it would loop through each
interface and try it in turn, and stop once one of them was configured
successfully -- except that, thanks to that quoting, that 'dev' variable
is not set progressively to 'eth0' and then 'eth1'. It is set once, to
the string "eth0 eth1".

That is clearly not what the rest of the script expects. This is
supposed to be the loop where it iterates over 'eth0' and then 'eth1' to
decide which of them to set DEVICE to, so the rest of this script can
understand the DEVICE variable. But instead, it tries to do silly things
like invoke dhclient on a fictional interface called "eth0 eth1",
instead of invoking dhclient once on each interface.

I don't know how to fix the bug where DEVICE is overridden even if the
ip bootarg is absent. Maybe that's the intended behavior? But to at
least fix autodetection, someone could just remove the quotes on $DEVICE
on line 299.

[Bug 1625023] Re: switch to systemd on ubuntu phone xenial

2016-10-12 Thread Vicamo Yang
** Description changed:

Snappy heavily rely on systemd system session and xenial has systemd by
  default.

  [steps to construct systemd-based avila]

  1. flash images built from xenial branch [1]. This should gives a
working xenial+upstart avila. Following steps are based on rootfs rev
- 51.
+ 56.
+
+ 1.1. If your system is a user build, e.g. flashed from u-d-f, you need to
create an additional symbolic link to automatically enable adb access. You can
do this under recovery mode:
+ device# cd /ubuntu/etc/systemd/system
+ device# mkdir android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
+ device# cd android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
+ device# ln -s /lib/systemd/system/android-tools-adbd.service

  2. Reboot into recovery mode and manually change upstart-local-bridge service
type to simple. (bug 1632260)
  host$ adb shell
  device# mkdir ubuntu
  device# mount /dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/by-name/system ubuntu
  device# exit
  host$ adb pull /ubuntu/lib/systemd/system/upstart-local-bridge.service .
(edit the file as mp[2] does ...)
  host$ adb push upstart-local-bridge.service \
    /ubuntu/lib/systemd/system/upstart-local-bridge.service
  host$ adb shell
  device# sync; sync; sync
  device# umount /ubuntu
  device# exit
  host$ adb reboot

  3. Go to Settings::About page to enable developer mode.

[Bug 1582242] Re: Support a user-session mode for authenticating

2016-10-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lightdm - 1.18.3-0ubuntu1

---
lightdm (1.18.3-0ubuntu1) xenial; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release:
- Fix error that caused stdin to be closed. This seems to have lots of bad
side effects (greeter not working correctly, multi-seat failing).
- Add support for greeters running inside sessions. This is enabled by
setting X-LightDM-Allow-Greeter inside the session .desktop file.
The session can then use liblightdm to connect one greeter to the
daemon. The communication is done using a socket
(/var/run/lightdm//greeter-socket) that is accessible to any
process run by that user. Consider controlling access to this socket
using a MAC system such as AppArmor. (LP: #1582242)
- Fix various memory management issues exposed by the use of in-session
  greeters.
  * debian/patches/lp1605117.patch:
- Applied upstream

[Bug 1632602] Re: no adb access under xenial+systemd user build

2016-10-12 Thread Vicamo Yang
However, like what we've have for eng build, one may simply hook
android-tools-adbd service to another valid property under user build,
e.g. "ro.build.type=user".

device# cd /ubuntu/etc/systemd/system
device# mkdir android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
device# cd android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
device# ln -s /lib/systemd/system/android-tools-adbd.service

Here, the folder name is "android-
container@\x3d.target.wants". That backslash character is
required.

[Bug 1625023] Re: switch to systemd on ubuntu phone xenial

2016-10-12 Thread Vicamo Yang
** Description changed:

Snappy heavily rely on systemd system session and xenial has systemd by
  default.

  [steps to construct systemd-based avila]

  1. flash images built from xenial branch [1]. This should gives a
working xenial+upstart avila. Following steps are based on rootfs rev
  56.

- 1.1. If your system is a user build, e.g. flashed from u-d-f, you need to
create an additional symbolic link to automatically enable adb access. You can
do this under recovery mode:
+ 1.1. If your system is a user build, e.g. flashed from u-d-f, you need to
create an additional symbolic link to automatically enable adb access (bug
1632602). You can do this under recovery mode:
  device# cd /ubuntu/etc/systemd/system
  device# mkdir android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
  device# cd android-contai...@ro.build.type\\x3duser.target.wants
  device# ln -s /lib/systemd/system/android-tools-adbd.service

  2. Reboot into recovery mode and manually change upstart-local-bridge service
type to simple. (bug 1632260)
  host$ adb shell
  device# mkdir ubuntu
  device# mount /dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/by-name/system ubuntu
  device# exit
  host$ adb pull /ubuntu/lib/systemd/system/upstart-local-bridge.service .
(edit the file as mp[2] does ...)
  host$ adb push upstart-local-bridge.service \
    /ubuntu/lib/systemd/system/upstart-local-bridge.service
  host$ adb shell
  device# sync; sync; sync
  device# umount /ubuntu
  device# exit
  host$ adb reboot

  3. Go to Settings::About page to enable developer mode.

Ping? Yakkety releases tomorrow and it's too late to land this in
yakkety proper, but it should at least be a yakkety SRU. Releasing this
to xenial-updates is still blocked by fixing it in the devel series.

[Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2016-10-12 Thread bekou
@Khurshid Alam

Well, I do confirm that adding the 4.4.0-22 kernel, there was a drop in
the memory usage.

Initially, the system started with 1.2 gb.

I disabled evolution processes as suggested above.

cd /usr/share/dbus-1/services
sudo ln -snf /dev/null org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.AddressBook.service
sudo ln -snf /dev/null org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.Calendar.service
sudo ln -snf /dev/null org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.Sources.service
sudo ln -snf /dev/null org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.UserPrompter.service

and gnome-software. There was a drop to 993 mb.

After the suggestion above with kernel 4.4.0-22, my system starts at
795.2 mb.

Moreover, the teamviewer process is running at system startup, so these
numbers can be further reduced by 70-100 mb.

If somebody knows how to re-enable evolution processes please let know.

[Bug 1628687] Re: Assertion failure when PID 1 receives a zero-length message over notify socket

2016-10-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 229-4ubuntu11

systemd (229-4ubuntu11) xenial; urgency=medium

  * 73-usb-net-by-mac.rules: Split kernel command line import line.
Reportedly this makes the rule actually work on some platforms. Thanks
Alp Toker! (LP: #1593379)
  * fsckd: Do not exit on idle timeout if there are still clients connected
(Closes: #788050, LP: #1547844)
  * libnss-*.prerm: Remove possible [key=value] options from NSS modules as
well. (LP: #1625584)
  * Backport networkd 231. Compared to 229 this has a lot of fixes, some of
which we need for good netplan support. Backporting them individually
would be a lot more work and a lot less robust, and we did not use/support
networkd in 16.04 so far. Drop the other network related patches as they
are included in this backport now. (LP: #1627641)
  * debian/tests/networkd: Re-enable the the DHCPv6 tests. The DHCPv6
behaviour is fixed with the above backport now.
  * pid1: process zero-length notification messages again. Just remove the
assertion, the "n" value was not used anyway. This fixes a local DoS due
to unprocessed/unclosed fds which got introduced by the previous fix.
(LP: #1628687)
  * pid1: Robustify manager_dispatch_notify_fd(). If
manager_dispatch_notify_fd() fails and returns an error then the handling
of service notifications will be disabled entirely leading to a
compromised system. (side issue of LP: #1628687)

[Bug 1632601] Re: initramfs fails to bring up networking with multiple interfaces, even when an interface is specified

2016-10-12 Thread David Masover
Workaround: In /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf, I simply set:

IP=eth0
DEVICE=eth0

If my analysis is correct, DEVICE is ignored and I can simply use IP. If
so, I think there are still at least two bugs here: Autodetection
doesn't work with multiple interfaces (and it's clear from the code that
it's _trying_ to support that use case), and the sample file has this
misleading comment:

#
# DEVICE: ...
#
# Specify a specific network interface, like eth0
# Overridden by optional ip= bootarg
#

This makes it sound like DEVICE is used if ip= isn't set, but that's not
true -- if ip= isn't set, and IP isn't set, DEVICE is overridden anyway.

[Bug 1627641] Re: Backport netplan to xenial

This bug was fixed in the package nplan - 0.12~16.04

---
nplan (0.12~16.04) xenial; urgency=medium

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * Backport to xenial. (LP: #1627641)
  * Adjust Breaks: network-manager to version in xenial that provides the
"read config from /run" functionality.
  * src/netplan: Add hack to support current NetworkManager snap, which
currently cannot provide "nmcli" and "NetworkManager.service". Note that
this is meant to be temporary until snapd gets fixed, and will NOT be
applied to yakkety or upstream. Patch by Simon Fels.

[Bug 1593379] Re: systemd 229-4ubuntu6 ignores net.ifnames=0 on USB or /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-setup-link.rules being a /dev/null symlink

2016-10-12 Thread Martin Pitt
I tested this on a ThinkPad (amd64) and it works. I cannot reproduce the
previously reported failure though, i. e. the one-line udev rule works
for me as well. But at least there is no regression here, so IMHO it's
safe to release that to get the other fixes out.

If it still does not work for you, please reopen and yell here. Thanks!

and then a lot of spew from compiz itself, but the session target or
other units are unaffected. I also get all windows back (plus the apport
crash notification). "pkill -ef -SEGV unity-panel-service" does not even
produce any screen flicker, but it just restarts.

So maybe that is a duplicate of bug 1613297 after all?

Can you reproduce this somehow? If so, please run "journalctl -f" on the
side and copy&paste the output. Thanks!

[Bug 1592721] Re: Don't write search domains to resolv.conf in the case of split DNS

2016-10-12 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
This bug seems to bite me in a slightly different way. Please let me
know if you feel that this is really a separate bug...

Also, this is happening on Yakkety - network-manager-1.2.4-0ubuntu1

When I connect to my work VPN, I'm not using split-tunnelling. Still the
DNS resolution is split, causing DNS resolution to only be correct for
my primary VPN search domain.

This log snippet seems to explain it all:
- 192.168.0.1 is my home ADSL DNS.
- example.local is the search suffix provided by my VPN.
- 10.10.10.12 and 10.10.10.13 are my VPN provided DNS servers.

The result of this is that all my other internal work-domains does not
work at all, and may, as the bug describes, leak onto the internet as
well.

If you need more info, let me know.

[Bug 1627348] Re: Live DVD boots to black screen with mouse pointer

2016-10-12 Thread Woko
Tried the image from today. What has improved is, that the live-image starts
reliable in the vmplayer virtual machine now, and I am able to complete the
installation process. But booting into it always results in 100% cpu-usage and
a frozen system.
After shutting down and restarting, I am able to start a root-console-session
via grub-recovery, but what does it help ?

[Bug 1627496] Re: AMD Radeon hardware features or firmware looked over by Linux 3.6.0+ kernel.

2016-10-12 Thread Valentin Quequet
Hello,

I improved on this *upstream* bug diagnosis by doing another careful git
bisect.

first bad commit: [30b5b8808c12bcd947dd474980482561b69c1bcb] PCI: Restore
inclusion of pci/hotplug Kconfig
(

 )

You can refer to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175391 for
more information.

In hope this helps.
