[Bug 1371032] Re: Cannot send MMS from "Yoigo"

2014-10-02 Thread Alfonso Sanchez-Beato
I have just noticed that the output of monitor-ofono is part of the
logs, and I see that network status actually gets into roaming state.
But, it is in very short time windows:

2014-09-26 23:07:00,185 {NetworkRegistration} [/ril_0] Status = registered

This does not really affect the reasoning above, imho the main problem here is
NetworkManager not attaching after coming back to registered state. However,
these "Status" flash changes can be annoying and the user could potentially see
a flickering roaming indicator in the GUI. I would like to get more traces for
this, Víctor, could it be possible to do this:

$ phablet-shell
$ sudo su
# stop ofono
# export OFONO_RIL_DEVICE=mtk OFONO_RIL_NUM_SIM_SLOTS=2
# export OFONO_RIL_HEX_TRACE="" export OFONO_RIL_TRACE=""
# ofonod -n -d -P stktest,provision,sap,udev,dun,smart,hfp >&
/tmp/ofono_log.txt &
# python3 -u /usr/share/ofono/scripts/monitor-ofono &> /tmp/monitor-ofono.txt &

walk around so the phone switches networks, and then attach the logs
here?

Looks like ofono core allowed to do the unlock even if the PIN has not

[Bug 1376587] [NEW] wine and fglrx packages are mutually exclusive

2014-10-02 Thread Paweł
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 Beta 2.

Packages affected:
- fglrx
- wine and derivatives (playonlinux for example)

I installed my graphics card drivers (fglrx) and it went okay, apart
from not starting x (I worked around it with removing quiet splash boot
options).

Afterwards I tried to install wine and I noticed that I am unable to do
so without removing fglrx and you can't install fglrx without removing
wine.

System is up-to-date with newest updates.

I set "In what package did you find this bug?" to "I don't know",
because it affects both packages.

I suddenly started to experience this bug when I updated my NVIDIA
drivers from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.79 to >= 340. The only workaround
I've found is:

CCSM -> Utility -> Workarounds -> Force complete redraw on initial damage ->
check (not sure if this helps)
CCSM -> Utility -> Workarounds -> Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on
repaint -> check

The problem is that awk is a symlink to either mawk or gawk that is setup in
their postinst script. But during bootstrap none of them have run yet so the
link does not exist.

[Bug 1376461] Re: unity8 AP test failures with Mir 0.8.0 silo

2014-10-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Working from the test failures downward, I can't yet see where or if
Unity8 gets any focus notifications from Mir at all:

Unity8:
assert_current_focused_application
self.main_window.get_current_focused_app_id
self._get_shell().focusedApplicationId
ApplicationManager.focusedApplicationId
ApplicationManager::focusApplication
ApplicationInfo::focused()
ApplicationInfo::setFocused()
... ?

Instead it appears that Unity8 and QtMir dictate focus between
themselves. This makes me suspicious of QtMir which has received two
focus-related changes in the past 24 hours.

[Bug 1375640] Re: fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system

2014-10-02 Thread Michael Mess
Thank you for the information.
I was thinking, that I have destroyed the extents and other features of the
ext4 file system by using a tool that is not aware of the special ext4
features, leading to filesystem coruption.
What happens, if I hit CTRL-C during fsck? Can that leave the filesystem in a
even more inconsistent state?

I used a SSD, so it is likely that resetting the system could have damaged the
file system.
Probably it is a good idea to keep the /home directory on a separate partition.
This is how I used to do; when there was file system corruption in the past
(mostly dying disks), the root filesystem got broken, but the home partition
only had none or minor issues, so recovery was always easy.
But it is not the default when installing ubuntu and for this installation I
didn't care for it.

Also the nvidia driver could have caused the damage by overwriting memory which
finally led to the crash.
But if that was nvidia driver's memory corruption, it is likely that it could
also also hit a separate home partition or any other mounted drive.

Is there a way to recover the file system manually? There is still hope
that the areas with data are mostly still present. I still keep a copy
of the disk image and I am still trying some recovery tools on a copy of
that image.

fsck.ext4 resulted in that some data still exists, some files have gone to
lost+found , but many files seem to be lost (the partition now appears to be
mostly unused).
It seems that much space has been unallocated and as a result some files could
have been partially overwritten during system boot, when the system writes to
the disk.

As far as I know, fsck.ext4 does not scan the whole disk for files to be linked
to lost+found, but only these areas that have been marked as used to improve
speed.
Is it possible to force searching the whole disk image for existing fragments
of the file system that are not allocated as used and do not have any linkage
to the existing filesytem any more?
I know that this could deliver much garbage (very old files) that have been
deleted or overwritten far before and are not of use, but probably it could be
useful to recover some useful data where the linkage to the file system has
been lost and that have been unallocated by filesystem coruption.

Could you provide me a link to current documentation of ext4 and fsck?
Where can I get the sources?

Can you recommend some good open source recovery tools?

[Bug 1232130] Re: Uninstalling an app doesn't stop it

2014-10-02 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks Colin and sorry for the trouble.

I looked into this now and reworked the way that the stopping happens.
It seems to be reliable now and gets the correct appid that is then
passed to app-launch-stop.

However the app still does not stop because ubuntu-app-stop needs to
talk to the users session bus. When click runs as root (or via PK) it
does not have access to it.

[Bug 1376592] [NEW] X509 certificate verification problem

2014-10-02 Thread rainkin
Public bug reported:

Hostname verification is an important step when verifying X509
certificates, however, people tend to miss the step or to misunderstand
the APIs when using SSL/TLS, which might cause severe man in the middle
attack and break the entire TLS mechanism.

We believe that freetds-bin didn't check whether the hostname matches
the name in the SSL certificate and the expired date of the certificate.

We found the vulnerability by static analysis, typically, a process of
verification involves calling a chain of API, and we can deduce whether
the communication process is vulnerable by detecting whether the
function call process matches a certain model. For example, when using
OPENSSL, if we call SSL_CTX_set_verify(ssl_ctx, SSL_VERIFY_NONE, null),
we should verify the certificate by calling the function
SSL_get_peer_certificate() to get the certificate. If the source code
does not match this model, then we can deduce this code is vulnerable.
What’ more , Gnutls is the same as Openssl.

To verify the result:

一.Hostname verification:
1. configure the file freetds.conf :
   # A typical Microsoft server
[sqlserver2000]
host = hackbyfun.sqlserver.com
port = 1433
tds version = 8.0
encrpytion = require
2.wirte the file /etc/hosts in order to simulate DNS hijack:
  10.214.146.123 hackbyfun.sqlserver.com
(PS: 10.214.146.123 is a normal sql server ip, its domain name is
safe.sqlserver.com )

3.connect with freetds-bin
tsql -S sqlserver2000 -U sa -P

4.result:connect succeed!!

The fetch succeeded, indicating freetds-bin didn't check the hostname
against the signee of the certificate.

二. Also for expired time check,
1. change the system time to 2200 to guarantee the certificate to be expired.
2. the same as the above process. Run freetds-bin to connect a normal sql server
3. result :connect succeed!!

The fetch succeeded again and no warning was given, indicating freetds-
bin didn't check whether the certificate expired or not.

(PS: I have saved the wireshark packages, and upload these files)

I am running freetds-bin 9.1-5 in ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

[Bug 1376595] [NEW] X509 certificate verification problem

2014-10-02 Thread rainkin
Public bug reported:

Hostname verification is an important step when verifying X509
certificates, however, people tend to miss the step or to misunderstand
the APIs when using SSL/TLS, which might cause severe man in the middle
attack and break the entire TLS mechanism.

We believe that scrollz didn't check whether the hostname matches the
name in the SSL certificate and the expired date of the certificate.

Static analysis result :
/scrollz-2.1/source/server.c login_to_server() have problems.

We provide this result to help developers to locate the problem faster.

To verify the result:
一.Hostname verification
1. write the file /etc/hosts in order to simulate DNS hijack:
64.32.24.176irc.mibbit.net
46.137.23.30chat.freenode.net
(PS:exchange the ip between these two irc servers)

2. connecting chat.freenode.net with scrollz
/server -ssl irc.mibbit.net:6697

3. result : we connected irc.mibbit.net!!

The fetch succeeded, indicating srcollz didn't check the hostname
against the signee of the certificate.

二. Also for expired time check,
1. change the system time to 2200 to guarantee the certificate to be expired.
2. run scrollz to connect a normal irc server, such as
irc.mibbit.net(46.137.12.30)
3. result : connect succeed!!

The fetch succeeded again and no warning was given, indicating scrollz
didn't check whether the certificate expired or not.

I am running scrollz 2.1-1.1 in ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

[Bug 1374560] Re: cannot set apps back to 'ask' in location access

2014-10-02 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Okay, so it's useful for engineers and testers. I can imagine plenty of
other functions fall into that category. For example, app developers
might want to delete all the app's data files, to test the first-run
flow. They might want to simulate running the app on a previous-
generation phone, or on the last Ubuntu version that was released for a
particular handset. They might want to make a slow-motion screencast of
their app to check animations. They might want to test whether data
migration works properly for someone who missed out on v2.0 of the app
and upgraded directly from 1.1 to 3.0. And so on.

So perhaps we need a trusted app to house functions like this.

[Bug 1376601] [NEW] X509 certificate verification problem

2014-10-02 Thread rainkin
Public bug reported:

Hostname verification is an important step when verifying X509
certificates, however, people tend to miss the step or to misunderstand
the APIs when using SSL/TLS, which might cause severe man in the middle
attack and break the entire TLS mechanism.

We believe that xfce4-mailwatch-plugin didn't check whether the hostname
matches the name in the SSL certificate and the expired date of the
certificate.

The static analysis result:
/xfce4-mailwatch-plugin-1.1.0/libmailwatch-core/mailwatch-net-conn.c
xfce_mailwatch_net_conn_make_secure()
We provide this result to help developers to locate the problem faster.

To verify the result:
一. Hostname verification:
1.configure xface4-mailwatch-plugin:
IMAP(SSL) :imap.163.com
Username : 598105904
Password :
Advanced: Use SSL/TLS on alternate port

2. change /etc/hosts in order to simulate the DNS hijack
113.108.16.116 imap.163.com
   (113.108.16.116 is QQ’s imap server)

3. run xfce4-mailwatch-plugin to fetch the mail

4. result : succeed!!!

The fetch succeeded, indicating xface4-mailwatch-plugin didn't check the
hostname against the signee of the certificate.

二.Also for expired time check,
1. change the system time to 2200 to guarantee the certificate to be expired.
2. run xfce4-mailwatch-plugin to fetch the mail.
3. result:succeed!!

The fetch succeeded again and no warning was given, indicating xface4
-mailwatch-plugin didn't check whether the certificate expired or not.

I am running xfce4-mailwatch-plugin 1.2.0-1 in ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
(PS: I have saved the wireshark ssl connecting packages and upload these files.)

for more information about the importance of checking hostname:
see http://people.stfx.ca/x2011/x2011ucj/SSL/p38-georgiev.pdf

[Bug 1376606] [NEW] inappropriate statistical parameters in ping output

2014-10-02 Thread Steffen Michalek
Public bug reported:

The output of the ping command gives to the user several statistical paramters
of the measured values (seen, in statistical sense, as a sample of a
statistical population) e.g.
> rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 423.152/728.492/1306.341/220.001 ms, pipe 2

One of them is surely not appropriate in order to describe data in that
case, one is probably inappropriate.

First, the mean of a sample is a good estimator (in statistical sence) for the
mean of an underlying statistical distribution (in statistical sense).
But, this is only true for statistical distributions that do possess a
so-called "first moment" (or "expectation value") or mean.

Some do not. And for that cases, giving the mean of the sample is misleading,
because it is only an unreliable, fluctuating property of the random sample -
and not of the statistical population!
The mean of the random sample does not converge (e.g. with increasing sample
size) to a location paramter of the underlying population or distribution.
An user will interprete the given value as information of some kind of "middle"
of the latencies, that will occure in the data conneciton. And this
interpretation is wrong. Therefor, the statistical parameter "avg", mean of the
sample, is misleading and therefor inappropriate.

Latency measurements are a standard case, where distrubutions occure, that do
not possess first moments or expectation values (or, at least, do contain a
large amount of outliers).
In such cases, the more robust (and easier) measure of location, called
"median" should be used, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Comparison_mean_median_mode.svg

(As a second reason, the skew of the latency measurements also
indicates, that a sample mean is not a good choice for an estimator for
the measure of location of the distribution.)

Second, a better measure of dispersion should be used. Wikipedia:
"When the median is used as a location parameter in descriptive statistics,
there are several choices for a measure of variability: the range, the
interquartile range, the mean absolute deviation, and the median absolute
deviation."

I would argue for the median absolute deviation.
(I wrote "probalby inappropriate", because "mdev" does not indicate a specific
statistical technical term, so I do not know, what ist calculated. If it is
"(square root of) sample variance" or "estimator for standard deviation", then
it is surely inappropriate.)

[Bug 1372555] Re: [system-settings] Settings application should run only in portrait

2014-10-02 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The indicator bar is supposed to rotate; that's bug 1210199.

"Orientation Lock" and "Flight Mode" might just about fit beside each
other in English, but I doubt they would in every language. Do you have
any other suggestions? I understand it's difficult to be precise about
prettiness, but that's what we need to do to make design changes.

[Bug 1376608] [NEW] Autostarts on any desktop

2014-10-02 Thread Iain Lane
Public bug reported:

I installed caja to test some stuff, not to actually use it.

After that when I logged in to Unity, some of the time caja would be
managing my desktop - it was racing with nautilus to do that.

Results in a weird state (see attached picture).

There's no XDG autostart file so I'm not sure how caja is starting up,
but please could you make it only start up in the right session?

[Bug 1376611] [NEW] AppArmor: cupsd not allowed to send signals to third_party

2014-10-02 Thread Felix Geyer
Public bug reported:

The cups 1.7.5-3 AppArmor profile has this rule which seems to be ineffective:
  signal (receive, send) peer=third_party,

I get this denial log entry when (re)installing cups:
audit: type=1400 audit(1412239287.417:110): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="signal" profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd" pid=28964 comm="cupsd"
requested_mask="send" denied_mask="send" signal=term
peer="/usr/sbin/cupsd//third_party"

Changing it to the absolute profile name seems to work:
  signal (receive, send) peer=/usr/sbin/cupsd//third_party,

I guess apparmor_parser can't distinguish between a profile named
third_party and a subprofile named third_party.

[Bug 1359153] Re: YouTube labels and categories are not localized

2014-10-02 Thread James Henstridge
Here's the response I got from the StackOverflow question from a member
of Google's Developer Relations team:

"""
Internationalization in the Data API v3 is something YT started supporting
recently, and it's limited now. But there is a work going on to bring this
support to the all functionalities in the API really soon.
"""

So it isn't clear how we can progress on this until something changes in
the API. I'm lowering the importance to take this into account. Please
change it again if you disagree.

Our experience clearly differs.

I find that it is often the second free of a block that triggers the
error. As the occasions when the free list has previously been corrupted
take disproportionately more time to solve I'm hoping this is an "easy"
one. ;)

[Bug 1376324] Re: /usr/sbin/unity-system-compositor:*** Error in `unity-system-compositor': free(): invalid pointer: ADDR ***

2014-10-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It would depend entirely on how much the code touches the heap. In a
reasonably efficient project, the heap (structure not content) doesn't
change that much. You always have to assume malloc/free/new/delete are
slow and should avoid them. So the offending corruption could have
happened some time ago.

[Bug 1376644] [NEW] Some qtpim tests start failing when built against Qt 5.3.2

2014-10-02 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

Some qtpim tests start failing when built against Qt 5.3.2:

https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-
service/+archive/ubuntu/landing-015/+sourcepub/4451482/+listing-archive-

I've also updated to the latest git snapshot but unfortunately it
doesn't fix the problems:

We shouldn't be disabling additional tests, so the root causes should be

[Bug 1256373] Re: gnome-shell fullscreen windows are minimizing on lost focus

2014-10-02 Thread Ben Scholzen 'DASPRiD'
The Gnome team finally decided to roll that feature back, because it
caused way too many problems. See last comment on their ticket and the
resolution: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705177

I propose that this [bugfix] is backported to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04, as this was
the first version affected by this. The relevant commit for this can be found
here:
