[Bug 1375640] Re: fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system
Thank you for the information. I was thinking, that I have destroyed the extents and other features of the ext4 file system by using a tool that is not aware of the special ext4 features, leading to filesystem coruption. What happens, if I hit CTRL-C during fsck? Can that leave the filesystem in a even more inconsistent state? I used a SSD, so it is likely that resetting the system could have damaged the file system. Probably it is a good idea to keep the /home directory on a separate partition. This is how I used to do; when there was file system corruption in the past (mostly dying disks), the root filesystem got broken, but the home partition only had none or minor issues, so recovery was always easy. But it is not the default when installing ubuntu and for this installation I didn't care for it. Also the nvidia driver could have caused the damage by overwriting memory which finally led to the crash. But if that was nvidia driver's memory corruption, it is likely that it could also also hit a separate home partition or any other mounted drive. Is there a way to recover the file system manually? There is still hope that the areas with data are mostly still present. I still keep a copy of the disk image and I am still trying some recovery tools on a copy of that image. fsck.ext4 resulted in that some data still exists, some files have gone to lost+found , but many files seem to be lost (the partition now appears to be mostly unused). It seems that much space has been unallocated and as a result some files could have been partially overwritten during system boot, when the system writes to the disk. As far as I know, fsck.ext4 does not scan the whole disk for files to be linked to lost+found, but only these areas that have been marked as used to improve speed. Is it possible to force searching the whole disk image for existing fragments of the file system that are not allocated as used and do not have any linkage to the existing filesytem any more? I know that this could deliver much garbage (very old files) that have been deleted or overwritten far before and are not of use, but probably it could be useful to recover some useful data where the linkage to the file system has been lost and that have been unallocated by filesystem coruption. Could you provide me a link to current documentation of ext4 and fsck? Where can I get the sources? Can you recommend some good open source recovery tools? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1375640 Title: fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/1375640/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1376592] [NEW] X509 certificate verification problem
Public bug reported: Hostname verification is an important step when verifying X509 certificates, however, people tend to miss the step or to misunderstand the APIs when using SSL/TLS, which might cause severe man in the middle attack and break the entire TLS mechanism. We believe that freetds-bin didn't check whether the hostname matches the name in the SSL certificate and the expired date of the certificate. We found the vulnerability by static analysis, typically, a process of verification involves calling a chain of API, and we can deduce whether the communication process is vulnerable by detecting whether the function call process matches a certain model. For example, when using OPENSSL, if we call SSL_CTX_set_verify(ssl_ctx, SSL_VERIFY_NONE, null), we should verify the certificate by calling the function SSL_get_peer_certificate() to get the certificate. If the source code does not match this model, then we can deduce this code is vulnerable. What’ more , Gnutls is the same as Openssl. To verify the result: 一.Hostname verification: 1. configure the file freetds.conf : # A typical Microsoft server [sqlserver2000] host = hackbyfun.sqlserver.com port = 1433 tds version = 8.0 encrpytion = require 2.wirte the file /etc/hosts in order to simulate DNS hijack: 10.214.146.123 hackbyfun.sqlserver.com (PS: 10.214.146.123 is a normal sql server ip, its domain name is safe.sqlserver.com ) 3.connect with freetds-bin tsql -S sqlserver2000 -U sa -P 4.result:connect succeed!! [Bug 1374560] Re: cannot set apps back to 'ask' in location access
Okay, so it's useful for engineers and testers. I can imagine plenty of other functions fall into that category. For example, app developers might want to delete all the app's data files, to test the first-run flow. They might want to simulate running the app on a previous- generation phone, or on the last Ubuntu version that was released for a particular handset. They might want to make a slow-motion screencast of their app to check animations. They might want to test whether data migration works properly for someone who missed out on v2.0 of the app and upgraded directly from 1.1 to 3.0. And so on. So perhaps we need a trusted app to house functions like this. ** Changed in: ubuntu-system-settings (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1374560 Title: cannot set apps back to 'ask' in location access To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-system-settings/+bug/1374560/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

We believe that xfce4-mailwatch-plugin didn't check whether the hostname matches the name in the SSL certificate and the expired date of the certificate. The static analysis result: /xfce4-mailwatch-plugin-1.1.0/libmailwatch-core/mailwatch-net-conn.c xfce_mailwatch_net_conn_make_secure() We provide this result to help developers to locate the problem faster. To verify the result: 一. Hostname verification: 1.configure xface4-mailwatch-plugin: IMAP(SSL) :imap.163.com Username : 598105904 Password : Advanced: Use SSL/TLS on alternate port 2. change /etc/hosts in order to simulate the DNS hijack 113.108.16.116 imap.163.com (113.108.16.116 is QQ’s imap server) 3. run xfce4-mailwatch-plugin to fetch the mail 4. result : succeed!!! The fetch succeeded, indicating xface4-mailwatch-plugin didn't check the hostname against the signee of the certificate. 二.Also for expired time check, 1. change the system time to 2200 to guarantee the certificate to be expired. 2. run xfce4-mailwatch-plugin to fetch the mail. 3. result:succeed!! The fetch succeeded again and no warning was given, indicating xface4 -mailwatch-plugin didn't check whether the certificate expired or not. I am running xfce4-mailwatch-plugin 1.2.0-1 in ubuntu 14.04 LTS. [Bug 1376606] [NEW] inappropriate statistical parameters in ping output
Public bug reported: The output of the ping command gives to the user several statistical paramters of the measured values (seen, in statistical sense, as a sample of a statistical population) e.g. > rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 423.152/728.492/1306.341/220.001 ms, pipe 2 One of them is surely not appropriate in order to describe data in that case, one is probably inappropriate. First, the mean of a sample is a good estimator (in statistical sence) for the mean of an underlying statistical distribution (in statistical sense). But, this is only true for statistical distributions that do possess a so-called "first moment" (or "expectation value") or mean. Some do not. And for that cases, giving the mean of the sample is misleading, because it is only an unreliable, fluctuating property of the random sample - and not of the statistical population! The mean of the random sample does not converge (e.g. with increasing sample size) to a location paramter of the underlying population or distribution. An user will interprete the given value as information of some kind of "middle" of the latencies, that will occure in the data conneciton. And this interpretation is wrong. Therefor, the statistical parameter "avg", mean of the sample, is misleading and therefor inappropriate. Latency measurements are a standard case, where distrubutions occure, that do not possess first moments or expectation values (or, at least, do contain a large amount of outliers). In such cases, the more robust (and easier) measure of location, called "median" should be used, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Comparison_mean_median_mode.svg (As a second reason, the skew of the latency measurements also indicates, that a sample mean is not a good choice for an estimator for the measure of location of the distribution.) Second, a better measure of dispersion should be used. Wikipedia: "When the median is used as a location parameter in descriptive statistics, there are several choices for a measure of variability: the range, the interquartile range, the mean absolute deviation, and the median absolute deviation." I would argue for the median absolute deviation. (I wrote "probalby inappropriate", because "mdev" does not indicate a specific statistical technical term, so I do not know, what ist calculated. If it is "(square root of) sample variance" or "estimator for standard deviation", then it is surely inappropriate.) [Bug 1376324] Re: /usr/sbin/unity-system-compositor:*** Error in `unity-system-compositor': free(): invalid pointer: ADDR ***
It would depend entirely on how much the code touches the heap. In a reasonably efficient project, the heap (structure not content) doesn't change that much. You always have to assume malloc/free/new/delete are slow and should avoid them. [Bug 1256373] Re: gnome-shell fullscreen windows are minimizing on lost focus
The Gnome team finally decided to roll that feature back, because it caused way too many problems. See last comment on their ticket and the resolution: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705177 I propose that this [bugfix] is backported to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04, as this was the first version affected by this. The relevant commit for this can be found here: https://git.gnome.org/browse/mutter/commit/?id=5d8ff2e34d36a72df2c14eea1bc4c265c3aab969 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1256373 Title: gnome-shell fullscreen windows are minimizing on lost focus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1256373/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
