[Bug 1368557] [NEW] "Something is wrong with the apt system." (v2)

2014-09-12 Thread Kenneth Wrede
Public bug reported:

This is exactly the same bug as this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-offline/+bug/1357217

It seems like the Janitor killed it to early. It was reported in Trusty,
and a working fix was released in Utopic. Fine so far! ("This bug was
fixed in the package apt-offline - 1.3.1ubuntu1")

BUT Trusty is still unpatched. It still provides the old version that
doesn't work. The new version is not in proposed eigther.

Can you just put it in trustys repos as well? That would do the trick!

** Affects: apt-offline (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1302416] Re: deja-dup monitor was taking 6GB of memory

2014-09-12 Thread Alan Lord
deja-dup-monitor is killing my laptop every morning! I do not have
Chrome-Remote-Desktop installed, nor do I need it as my backups are
handled differently. Am on 14.04 LTS up-to-date and have only recently
started seeing this issue.

Why do we need this daemon if we are not using the backup solution? It
shouldn't be installed by default surely?

[Bug 1349572] Re: Wireless network disconnections on Dell XPS 13

2014-09-12 Thread Marcel Miguel
Just tested on my office wifi and got 120Mbit/s, so there is no speed
problem with this new kernel. Also no reason=4 disconnections for a hour
test.

Thank you very much to Seth and others for the good work.

Re: [Bug 1216385] Re: [needs-packaging] scanbd

2014-09-12 Thread sander
Hello Rolf,

This is the email I have sent you on September 1, 2013. I suppose you did
not receive it last year...

PS: I am now running Ubuntu 14.04.

-

Hello,

Yes indeed. I have a scanner that works with scanbd, a Canon LiDE 110 (very
good Sane support with drivers that work on any system). I am now using
that scanner connected to a hacked MyBook NAS running Debian Squeeze: I can
scan jpeg or PDF (also multipage) to the NAS, copy the scan using the
connected printer, or email scans in jpeg or PDF (also multipage). All
without the need to start a desktop computer.

Anyway, I can test your package on my workstation (Ubuntu 13.04).

[Bug 1368582] [NEW] Lost "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" after update

2014-09-12 Thread Sylvain
Public bug reported:

This is the second time that, after updating, I am left with the Cape
Verde/Pitcairn device only, which has never been able to produce sounds
on my Precison M4800 (Dell). The Built-in Audio Analog Stereo device,
which is the one that produces sounds disappears.

The first time I solved this by running 'sudo alsa force-reload'.

This secon time it did not address the issue and there was a messag
eindicatting that most snd_hda* modules failed to unload..

[Bug 1367241] Re: Incorrect udev-fallback-graphics.conf

2014-09-12 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm still not fully convinced about the SRUs -- this might have a
potential to break existing setups if they run custom kernels? It's ok
to add the expectancy to build in vesafb for a new release (utopic), but
not for existing stables?

Or is it impossible to build vesafb as a module now?

2014-09-12 Thread Fabrice Bongartz
I actually fixed this by doing the following steps:
# service smbd stop
# service winbind stop
# cd /var/lib/samba

[Bug 1367241] Re: Incorrect udev-fallback-graphics.conf

2014-09-12 Thread Dariusz Gadomski
Building vesafb as a module should still be possible.

Trusty had vesafb build in the kernel from the very first release, so I
believe the assumption is safe here.

Regarding precise:
Instead of removing the script I could leave it but alter it to check the
feature (e.g. kernel version number or the option in /boot/config-`uname-r`)
and undertake no actions in the script if we have this module compiled in.

[Bug 1307778] Re: getent group on trusty returns only local groups

2014-09-12 Thread Fabrice Bongartz
Sorry, the "I" before the [Global] section in my previous comment is of course
a typo, it should not be there.
To futher get a bit of context here: I had this server running without problems
on ubuntu server 12.04 and upgraded to 14.04.1 LTS using do-release-upgrade.
This is when getent group stopped working. So I guess something has changed in
winbindd_idmap.tdb?

I also switched from he old idmap syntax which is now deprecated:
   idmap uid = 1-2
   idmap gid = 1-2
to the new syntax:
idmap config * : backend = tdb
idmap config * : range = 16777216-33554431

[Bug 1368606] [NEW] unrar-nonfree in Ubuntu 14.x (Trusty and Utopic) is old and can have security issues

2014-09-12 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

unrar-nonfree in Ubuntu 14.x (Trusty and Utopic) is old (current
upstream version is 5.1.7) and can contain security issues.

Please update to the latest upstream version from http://rarlab.com/rar_add.htm
in Ubuntu 14.10 and backport to 14.04 LTS.
I think this non-free package should be always kept up-to-date to cover
security issues not maintained by the Security Team.

Here are listed some improvements (see http://rarlabs.com/rarnew.htm for
full list):

Version 5.11

 Bugs fixed:
  - RAR 5.10 failed to update self-extracting RAR archives
 containing nested ZIP archives stored without compression;
  - deleting a file in RAR5 solid archive containing files stored
 with -ver switch caused such files to lose version information;

Version 5.10
  - Added support for AES-NI CPU instructions allowing to improve
  RAR encryption and decryption performance.

[Bug 1329974] Re: nautilus freezes during copy/paste

2014-09-12 Thread GAJ
I have the same experience as 'bluebugblazin (openevan)': copying a
number of files (in my case: 100 - 1000 jpg pictures from an sd-card to
one of my HDDs (NTFS formatted)) initially works OK, but after some time
(a certain number of GBs transferred??) not only nautilus freezes, but
the whole system becomes non-responsive (force shutdown only).

[Bug 1368615] [NEW] Alt+Shift+Tilde (~) should switch windows in reverse order

2014-09-12 Thread mcandre
Public bug reported:

There's a GUI convention for navigation: adding the Shift modifier to a
hotkey is typically interpreted as 'do the same thing as the hotkey,
except in the other direction'. Control+Tab+Shift may visit the previous
Web browser tab. Control+Z+Shift may redo the last edit, and so on.

Ubuntu offers Alt+Tab for switching between windows, and Alt+Tilde for
switching between windows of the same application. Ubuntu also offers
Alt+Shift+Tab for switching between windows in reverse order.

However, Ubuntu, or some odd dependency, neglected to make a
corresponding Alt+Shift+Tilde hotkey for switching between windows of
the same application in reverse order.

Please add this missing hotkey.

[Bug 1368620] [NEW] Hard to tell which dock apps are running / not running

2014-09-12 Thread mcandre
Public bug reported:

The colorized background of dock icons makes it harder for me to tell
which apps are running. I would prefer that the dock icon backgrounds
remain the same color regardless of icon content, and that the same
color is used across apps to indicate a running app. This would make it
easier at a glance for me to tell which apps are running and which are
not.

Similarly, some applications have rather large dock icons, such as the
Wunderlist browser app. When this happens, there is very little room for
a background color, so any such change in the dock icon when the app
launches / quits is barely noticeable. In the future, could Ubuntu scale
down all dock icons to the same size, allowing for some padding for
background colors?

or if that's not possible (because it's the kernel who spits out errors,
but that's unlikely), it could also do "if modinfo vesafb >/dev/null

Well no, one could still run a self-built kernel.

So I think for an SRU it would be safer to not drop the script, but
instead do some 2>/dev/null to quiesce the error.

[Bug 1368647] [NEW] GPS and location detection not working on Nexus 4

2014-09-12 Thread Tomas Öqvist
Public bug reported:

Mako with MultiROM, utopic r239

None of the apps I have tried including Weather, Google maps, OSM Touch
and SensorStatus are able to use the phone's GPS. The SensorStatus app
actually reports "Found supported backend", but finds no position or
other GPS data.

Location detection on the other hand is doing something, but it is
really far off when it comes to determining the actual location of the
device. The Weather app suggests my location as Vänsjö, Jämtland, which
is about 400 km north of Stockholm where I am at. OSM Touch reports "no
location available" and Google maps "Your location could not be
determined"

I don't know if the GPS has to "waken up" somehow, but it has not shown
any form of life for me on Ubuntu Touch, even though it works perfectly
fine when booting the phone as Android.

[Bug 1355776] Re: WiFi shown as enabled in indicator while disabled in status bar

2014-09-12 Thread Antti Kaijanmäki
There are actually three separated issues discussed there. First one is
the original reported problem where URfkill was not updating killswitch
states properly. That has been fixed.

The second one is about the icon which actually is "nm-no-connection" which
unfortunately looks like a wifi icon. Actually looking at spec it says that if
there is no wifi nothing should be shown in the indicator, but that is not
possible due to the fact that we might end up in a situation where there is no
icons shown by the indicator and then you would not be able to pull down the
indicator. I need to ping MPT about it.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-network/+bug/1340206

Thirdly there is the toggle switch bug which already has a bug of it's own.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-network/+bug/1336715

So to summarize, the original bug is fixed and thus it can be closed as

[Bug 1367136] Re: In "Updates" list, Ubuntu icon incorrectly has frame

2014-09-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
(In case anyone comes across this later: Sebastien and I discussed his
question on IRC. Ubuntu Touch app icons have always had the Ubuntu-
shaped frame, but the Ubuntu logo never has. A circle touching a
squbuntircle looks wrong subjectively, but if bug 1363015 was fixed the
question wouldn't have arisen in the first place.)

[Bug 1367241] Re: Incorrect udev-fallback-graphics.conf

2014-09-12 Thread Dariusz Gadomski
Actually I think the second approach would be better, since the error
comes not from the message (which is redirected to upstart logs anyway),
but from the return code of the script.

Unfortunately, according to my knowledge, the upstart scripts are
executed with the "-e" switch making it stop with a failure on a first
failed call. This ties our hands a bit as we cannot have any failing
commands there (even those we expect to fail in a particular
configuration) and makes our potential script less flexible.

So in any case we would be interested in not returning anything other than 0. A
commonly used work-around for this limitation could be used like this:
modprobe -q -b vesafb || true

This would load the module if available, but would remain quiet (-q
switch to modprobe with additional || true) if the module is not there.

[Bug 1329974] Re: nautilus freezes during copy/paste

2014-09-12 Thread Slopsbucket
I registered this bug so long ago that I gave up on it and forgot about
it.

This may help a little - on a fresh clean install, before you ever open
Nautilus, go into dconf-editor and go to org/gnome/desktop/thumbnailers
and tick the box for Disable All. Nautilus will still crash when
copying multiple files but at least it now opens and browses folders a
bit quicker. With thumbnailers enabled a folder with 2000 movies will
take approximately 20 minutes to open. Try to access a 4 Tb drive full
of movies with thumbnailers enabled and you get the same crash as
copying multiple files.

Gnome Commander really is what you need. It's old and clunky to operate
but it's fast and it doesn't crash. Copied 4 Tb in less than 8 hours.
Took only a few minutes to recursively change ownership and permissions
on the whole 4 Tb,

I've given up on Nautilus except as a quick easy access when I want to
play a movie, it's completely useless for anything else. Take a look at
the main bugs list page, the entire first page is Nautilus.

This is my first experience with Ubuntu - I think they could learn a few
things by taking a good look at some of the other Linux distro's out
there. The other distros are all having the same problems with Nautilus
but at least they respond to bug reports and try to offer fixes or work
arounds.

Cheers,

Andrew.

[Bug 1368668] [NEW] [Apps switcher] Visual feedback of user's finger movement needed throughout the gesture

2014-09-12 Thread Vesa Rautiainen
Public bug reported:

Right edge compound gesture has two phases. During the second phase all
the recent applications stack together in to the apps spread. There is a
second phase commit threshold value after which this stacking happens.
Currently when this commit threshold has been exceeded user loses
control over the gesture. There is no way to go back and the UI doesn't
react to further finger movement to left. We want user to be in control
also after the second commit line.

RIght edge gesture progress is explained and broken into pieces in this spec:
https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1FC_-5yz5kPy_ZvTphaqxOgI5BPnALFbxRAO4eJkzlf8/edit#

There is already a bug about reversibility (movement back to right)
after second commit line (#1355284). So this bug is to fix the non-
responsiveness after second phase commit line when user moves finger
towards left edge.

Steps to repro:
1. Start right edge swipe
2. keep finger pressed and drag to left until you reach the point when apps
spread is formed
3. keep still finger pressed and move finger towards left

Current behaviour:
No visual feedback

Expected behaviour:
Applications should start moving to left and stack the way they do when they're
dragged to left in normal spread use case

which looks to me like there are problems upgrading clutter, bamf and
other pacakges to the new versions

the directory "20140912-2154/" within "/var/log/dist-upgrade/" is
significant on my system as that is when i last ran the upgrade too; it
will almost certainly be a different location on other systems, as it is
date-stamped. could others who have problems try running a similar
command to see if there are other broken packages?

[Bug 1365930] Re: OpenPrinting Release.gpg - bad signature.

2014-09-12 Thread DiagonalArg
@Till - thank you for checking. I have just done an apt-get update, and
the problem did not appear. I repeated the process that you had kindly
checked, _without_ downloading the key again, and now I am not finding
the bad signature. The only answer can be that temporarily there was a
bad signature. (I did email the webmaster at openprinting.org about
this issue a few days prior to posting this bug, so perhaps the issue
was corrected there?)

[Bug 1368675] [NEW] No Wi-Fi on Nexus 4 (Mako)

2014-09-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Touch 14.10 r235, LG Nexus 4

1. Open the Network menu.
2. Navigate to System Settings > "Wi-Fi".

What happens:

1. The Network menu contains only the word "Empty!" (That wording is bug
1350952, but this isn't about the wording.)

2. The screen contains only "Previous networks" and (as long as bug
1365960 isn't fixed) "Other network".

What should happen:
1. A Wi-Fi switch is available.
2. A Wi-Fi switch is available.

I'm sorry for my lack of feedback :-/

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Bluetooth isn't that important to
me but still I think this should work.
I'm suspecting it might have to do with usb failure as in

[Bug 1368677] [NEW] [Apps switcher] Move commit points toward right to make spread more accessible

2014-09-12 Thread Vesa Rautiainen
Public bug reported:

In our user testing users often failed to access the spread via long
right edge swipe. We want to make spread a bit more accessible by moving
second phase commit point few grid units to right. Not to affect the
overall functionality and experience the right thing to do is to make
first phase reveal phase shorter which then automatically moves both
first phase and second phase commit point same amount towards right.

See the spec for detailed descriptions of different gesture phases:
https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1FC_-
5yz5kPy_ZvTphaqxOgI5BPnALFbxRAO4eJkzlf8/edit#

Desired solution:
Shorten the first phase reveal by 4 gu

Since the 4gu value is just an estimate and might need refining the
result should be approved with design team before committing.
