[Bug 1260623] [NEW] Failed to boot LiveCD

2013-12-13 Thread Christopher Yee Mon
Public bug reported:

Environment:
Ubuntu 13.10 x64 LiveCD

Summary: I tried to boot the LiveCD and LiveUSB made using Unetbootin,
with the UEFI set to Legacy Mode. It's not booting. I'm getting a kernel
panic detailed below

So I hit escape on the loading screen when booting the Ubuntu LiveCD in
Legacy mode and it showed the stack trace off the kernel panic during
boot it is the following below. It seems to indicate a problem with the
nouveau kernel module during LiveCD boot.

[Bug 1260619] [NEW] CVE-2013-7026

2013-12-13 Thread John Johansen
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Multiple race conditions in ipc/shm.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12.2
allow local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and
system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted
application that uses shmctl IPC_RMID operations in conjunction with
other shm system calls.

[Bug 1260622] [NEW] CVE-2013-7027

2013-12-13 Thread John Johansen
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

The ieee80211_radiotap_iterator_init function in net/wireless/radiotap.c
in the Linux kernel before 3.11.7 does not check whether a frame
contains any data outside of the header, which might allow attackers to
cause a denial of service (buffer over-read) via a crafted header.

[Bug 1260297] Re: status_update not sent any more, causes eternal hang on conffile prompts in aptdaemon

2013-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Indeed, run unit tests against the source tree during package build
(failing the build if they fail), and integration tests in autopkgtest
against the system-installed package. The latter don't necessarily need
to be the same upstream tests; coverage of fine details is already
handled during package build, it's sufficient to have some kind of smoke
test that "apt-get update", "apt-cache search", "apt-get install" etc.
work in general: I. e. binaries are installed, dependencies are correct,
expected directories in /var exist, and so on.

2013-12-13 Thread HinzundKunz
The middle headphone jack has node 26
the front headphone jack is labeled spdif/headphone and has node 25

But I don't really understand what this has to do with my recording problems...
btw, recording from the microphone jack is noisy as well...

[Bug 1249255] Re: all but 9 apps disappear for minutes

2013-12-13 Thread Michael Zanetti
Yeah. same here. However, it's not just about not having a connection.
Intentionally disconnecting the device makes just "More suggestions" go
away (which is correct) but already installed apps are still around.
This must be something like loosing the connection in the middle of an
update or the like, which messes up with the state so that even
installed apps disappear.

[Bug 1256949] Re: Dell Latitude E5420 doesn't boot if killswitch is turned to "radio off"

2013-12-13 Thread James Hunt
@meamy - I don't think putting apport/dropbear into the initramfs is a
good idea, no. Please can you boot without 'quiet' and without 'splash'
but add '--debug' and attach a photo of the screen.

What do you mean that you could never reach the login screen with
crtl+alt+f8?:

1) Did the system fail to switch to vt8?
2) Did the system correctly switch to vt8 but not display a login prompt?

If you are comfortable doing so, I would recommend booting again without
'splash' and without 'quiet' and adding 'init=/bin/sh'. Then, once you
have been dropped to a shell:

# /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty8 &
# exec /sbin/init --debug /dev/console 2>&1

At that point, upstart will start to boot the system. Again, pleas try
switching to vt8 with ctrl+alt+f8 and see if you can login and run
apport-collec.

[Bug 1256931] Re: please upgrade to MySQL 5.6

2013-12-13 Thread James Page
14.04 won't make 5.6 the default MySQL; if it lands in Debian in the
next 2 months I'd expect to ship it in universe only.

** Summary changed:

- please upgrade to MySQL 5.6
+ please include MySQL 5.6

[Bug 1169409] Re: [HP Pavilion 23] Brightness control doesn't work.

2013-12-13 Thread AceLan Kao
Hi,

So, you mean the issue on machine 201206-11410 could be fixed by installing the
proprietary driver.
And another machine 201208-11466 is not affected.
Then, looks like we can close this bug?

[Bug 1259237] Re: Hybrid graphics enablement in 12.04.4

2013-12-13 Thread Alberto Milone
** Description changed:

- This a bug report to enable power saving on systems with NVIDIA Optimus
- in 12.04
+ SRU request:

- Required components:
+ Please accept the following packages in precise-proposed.

  lightdm
  nvidia-prime
- nvidia-331
- nvidia-331-updates
+ nvidia-graphics-drivers-331
+ nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates
+ nvidia-graphics-drivers-304
+ nvidia-graphics-drivers-304-updates
+ nvidia-graphics-drivers-173
  nvidia-settings
  screen-resolution-extra
  bbswitch
+
+
+ [Rationale]
+ This is the result of the HWE effort to bring power management to systems
with NVIDIA Optimus.
+
+ [Impact]
+ Without this work, we keep both GPUs on all the time, thus heavily impacting
on battery life. Thanks to this work, it is now possible to easily disable the
discrete card when raw power is not needed.
+
+ Furthermore nvidia-prime has better hardware detection now, and won't
+ try to enable hybrid graphics on desktop systems any more.
+
+ As for the technical details:
+ * bbswitch is a backport of the package that now lives in main in 14.04.
+ * The actual work happened in lightdm, nvidia-331, nvidia-331-updates,
nvidia-prime, screen-resolution-extra, and nvidia-settings.
+ * nvidia-settings now replaces all the different nvidia-settings flavours, so
as to reduce the maintainance effort. I patched the app so that it checks the
driver version (at runtime) and doesn't expose features that older driver
releases do not support.
+ * nvidia-331 and nvidia-331-updates replace 319 and 319-updates. These are
the new LTS releases by NVIDIA.
+ * nvidia-304 and nvidia-304-updates recommend the new nvidia-settings,
include a security update, and build against the upcoming Linux 3.11
(lts-saucy).
+ * nvidia-173, in addition to being compatible with Linux 3.11 (lts-saucy),
also introduces transitional packages for 173-updates, as it doesn't make sense
to maintain a separate -updates flavour any more.
+
+
+ [Test Case]
+ After installing the update, users should be able to boot the system as
usual, with no regressions of any kind.
+
+ * Systems with a single NVIDIA card: nvidia-prime will detect the
+ hardware and do nothing at all on unsupported systems (such as the one
+ card use case, or the desktop use case)
+
+ * Systems with NVIDIA Optimus: nvidia-prime will preserve its previous
+ behaviour by leaving both GPUs on. Users can launch nvidia-settings and
+ switch to the power profile that they need.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low. The new features are enabled only if the user manually selects them.

[Bug 1260656] [NEW] Latex error using babel - no compilation

2013-12-13 Thread Mariana
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 13.10

TexLive:
Instalado: 2013.20130722-1
  Candidato: 2013.20130722-1

 *** 2013.20130722-1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main i386 Packages

The file was OK before an Ubuntu upgrade I have done.

Now when I compile the tex file I don't get the pdf file as expected.
Instead I get the error: "! Package babel Error: You haven't specified a
language option."

But I have : \usepackage[portuguese]{babel} in the main file.

I have searched the web for a solution but the solution I get (to delete
the .aux file and compile again) does not work.

[Bug 1260513] Re: 045e:00f9 [Gateway DX4860] Horizontal scrolling is broken with specific external mouse device

2013-12-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Val, thank you for providing the requested information. Given a solution
was found through a modification in evdev, I'll reassign to it. This
wouldn't be considered a duplicate of another bug at this point (ex.
926917) or vice versa as the other report doesn't have any log files for
the original reporter, and the proposed patch hasn't been acknowledged
by the OR to fix his problem.

The next step would be to engage evdev upstream in getting this reviewed for
upstream inclusion by filing a report:

2013-12-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver

comments wouldn't be helpful at this point. If you are using Gentoo, it would
be best to report a bug to their bug tracker -> https://bugs.gentoo.org .
Despite this, so your hardware may be tracked, using Ubuntu, could you please
file a new report by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a
Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

[Bug 1253942] Re: [Dell Inspiron 3737] Multiple CRITICAL failures found in fwts method test

2013-12-13 Thread Colin King
I believe this is due to bug
https://bugs.acpica.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1062

I forced an early abort from the infinite loop using the horrible hack:

diff --git a/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
b/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
index efaf38b..90e9656 100644

+++ b/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
@@ -529,6 +529,7 @@ AcpiEvDetachRegion(

 LastObjPtr = &ObjDesc->Region.Next;
 ObjDesc = ObjDesc->Region.Next;
+break;
 }

/* If we get here, the region was not in the handler's region list */

And then I was able to run fwts to completion:

./src/fwts method --dumpfile=/home/king/repos/acpica/acpidump.log - >
results.log

Attached are my results.

It shows that the method test works OK and doesn't fail. So I guess the
objects are not being found because ACPICA is getting stuck.

[Bug 1245061] Re: muon-updater stuck at Loading Software List

2013-12-13 Thread Roman
I have just upgraded to KUbuntu Saucy, and discovered that muon hangs on any

sudo strace -p says:

unavailable)
recvfrom(7, 0x14388f4, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

{fd=10, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}], 6, 0) =

and so on...

[Bug 1165433] Re: Kernels from 3.8.x to 3.11.x panic on bluetooth DUN disconnect

2013-12-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Sergio Callegari, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1255843] Re: [Lenovo V480] Multiple CRITICAL/HIGH failures in the fwts report

2013-12-13 Thread Colin King
I believe this is due to bug
https://bugs.acpica.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1062

I forced an early abort from the infinite loop using the horrible hack:

diff --git a/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
b/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
index efaf38b..90e9656 100644

+++ b/src/acpica/source/components/events/evregion.c
@@ -529,6 +529,7 @@ AcpiEvDetachRegion(

 LastObjPtr = &ObjDesc->Region.Next;
 ObjDesc = ObjDesc->Region.Next;
+ break;
 }

/* If we get here, the region was not in the handler's region list
*/

And then I was able to run fwts to completion:

./src/fwts method --dumpfile=AcpiTables.txt - > results.log

Attached are my results.

It shows that the method test works OK and doesn't fail. So I guess the
objects are not being found because ACPICA is getting stuck.

[Bug 973536] Re: kvm brings Oneiric host to a grinding halt

2013-12-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Juerg Haefliger, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1245379] Re: Keyboard layout changes to UK on 13.10

2013-12-13 Thread Merlijn Sebrechts
I have exactly the same problem. The keyboardindicator was working just
fine, until a while ago. After boot the keyboard layout is "US", but the
keyboard-indicator shows "BE". When i change it manually to US and back
to BE, the keyboard layout is BE.

This happens to me everytime after boot, so If you want me to run some
commands, ask away.

(See attached video.) In both tests I've selected two files and right-clicked
one of them. In the first case I didn't move the cursor between releasing LMB

  What happened:
In the first case Nautilus acted like I've right-clicked empty space in the

like I've right-clicked a file.

  What was expected:

about 15s to 1m, but If I didn't knew anything about mouse events (and

[Bug 1256061] Re: clock forcefully switches from 24h to 12h AM/PM format once the panel clock is loaded

2013-12-13 Thread Michał Sawicz
OK I misattributed missing AM/PM label to this actually being fixed.

Aaanyway. The time label for both the greeter and the panel comes pre-
formatted from indicator-datetime directly. So no qtubuntu, no unity8
issue - indicator-datetime needs to fix the label it sends up.

[Bug 1260683] Re: Jockey should not make NVIDIA Optimus available on the desktop

2013-12-13 Thread Alberto Milone
** Description changed:

Currently we try to offload graphics rendering to the discrete NVIDIA
GPU when we detect systems with an Intel integrated GPU and an NVIDIA
discrete card regardless of whether the computer is a desktop or a
  laptop.

- While this is a perfectly desirable feature on a
+ While this is a perfectly desirable feature on a laptop, where the
+ internal display is always driven by the integrated GPU, on a desktop
+ system, users will probably add a discrete card to get better
+ performance and connect the monitor to it (instead of using the
+ integrated card). This will result in a black screen on boot because the
+ xserver will expect the monitor to be connected to the Intel card. Users
+ should disable the Intel card from the BIOS instead.
+
+ For this reason, Jockey should check that it's dealing with a laptop
+ before suggesting the installation of the NVIDIA drivers on systems with
+ hybrid graphics. This also affects the Ubuntu installer, where the
+ NVIDIA driver is installed by default.

[Bug 1080363] Re: module 'citrixxml' not found

2013-12-13 Thread Chucky
This is blocking as simply can't run the "slow comprehensive test" under 12.04
LTS too !
I don't get the point about the SRU Procedure : steps 1 and 2 are OK, but I
don't see any fix for 12.04 LTS.
