[Bug 1224221] Re: 10de:1244 [Asus MAXIMUS IV GENE-Z] Nouveau Sleep/Wake problem in Ubuntu 13.04+

2013-12-01 Thread Glenn Chugg
I downloaded the current trusty image, Live OS had same problem,
Installed OS had same problem.

I updated mainline kernel and had similar problem. The screen came back
corrupted for 1/2 a second, then it went to a black screen with a mouse
cursor (movable), so the recent changes are doing something different,
but not what I need, even if it would restart the GUI session if it
times out (stops responding) instead of locking up/giving up on the x
session, I could live with that.

I was unable to get it to re-start a new x session using ctrl+alt + F1
and typing startx like I could with previous tests.

2013-12-01 Thread Randy Bass
"It's not a bug, it's a feature." Yeah, right. Who's idea was it to say
this isn't a bug? And then you need to install some other app to
override it? I tried the recommended operations above, and it still
didn't work for me. This is totally bogus.

[Bug 1256565] Re: apt-key del gives wrong message if key is not in keyring

2013-12-01 Thread David Kalnischkies
If we have an error message, the exit code should be non-zero, but we
can't do this without surprising users (read: scripts).

While it might not be perfect, it is at least not wrong as 'del' does in
this situation what it is supposed to do: remove the key from the
keyring. This is a trivial task of course if the key isn't present
before, but so it be: After the request the key is (still) removed.

Are you needing this for anything or was it just "surprising the first
time round"?

Note btw that the remove_key_from_keyring function is called multiple
times with different keyrings as keys can (not) be in different keyrings
nowadays which all need to be inspected, so apt-key would have to keep
track of how often it has nuked a key from a keyring so far adding lots
of code for the small gain of printing an error message telling me that
I wasted precious lifetime typing a command which boiled down to being a
no-operation (and wasted another bunch of seconds on reading the error
message).

[Bad enough that it prints "OK". It should really be silent…]

Re: [Bug 1254689] Re: C3PO LTC31v2 smart card reader doesn't work on Ubuntu 12.04

2013-12-01 Thread fjrodriguez
My solution was to change the soft links in '/usr/local/lib' with these
commands:

/usr/local/lib$ sudo ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpcsclite.so.1.0.0
libpcsclite.so.1

/usr/local/lib$ sudo ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpcsclite.so.1.0.0
libpcsclite.so

Now pcsc_scan detect the reader and work without problem.

Thank you very much for your help.

[Bug 678020] Re: libgnutls missing package configuration (PC) files

2013-12-01 Thread zasran
Bug still present in Ubuntu 13.10, apt-file search gnutls.pc returns
nothing, when building e.g. rsyslog configure fails:

configure:17927: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors "gnutls >= 1.4.0"
Package gnutls was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gnutls.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gnutls' found

Seems like it should be pretty simple to add it to the package since per
previous comments the file gnutls.pc is actually generated, just not
part of the package.

unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors. I also don't think it's worth doing an

[Bug 608770] Re: battery critically low dialog doesn't disappear when plugged in

2013-12-01 Thread Rushi Agrawal
Chris, I guess there was slight misunderstanding. Manuel was intending
that the 'dialog box' which says 'battery cricital, plug in charging'
doesn't go away when one plugs in the charger. I think the 'dialog box'
should go away as soon as battery is plugged in. You are right that the
battery 'indicator' mustn't disapper, but that 'dialog box' should as
soon as you plug the charger.

I am noticing the same issues even now, in Ubuntu 13.04. It would be
great if this UI inconvenience is fixed.

Thanks.

...and finally a screenshot from when I attempted to unmount the sftp.

Just one more thing:
I don't know if it is a symptom (or it might be misleading), but it seems to
work on lan, but crashes on wan. I know it is not router settings or similar as
filezilla shows no problem in either case.

[Bug 1251816] Re: Boot failure with saucy kernel 3.11 probing eisa

2013-12-01 Thread Charles Peters II
The 3.9 kernels work and the 3.10 kernels fail to boot.

In addition to the above kernels you listed, I tried the last 3.9 and
the first 3.10 based on the directory date listings at
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

Boots OK:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9.11-saucy/

Fails to boot:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-rc1-saucy/

via686a :00:07.4: base address not set - upgrade BIOS or use
force_addr=0xaddr
Reading through https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/hwmon/via686a it is a
fan control issue and "Addresses scanned: ISA in PCI-space encoded address".
The kernel doc suggests to only try "Example: 'modprobe via686a
force_addr=0x6000'" if one can't find an updated BIOS: but doesn't tell me how
I find the correct address. The two variable speeds seem to be working OK. I
checked the vendors website and emailed Sagar to ask about an updated BIOS.

lshw shows:

[Bug 33288] Re: Evince doesn't handle columns properly

2013-12-01 Thread Brian Ewins
(oops, replied on launchpad, not sure if Carlos reads there. Repeating
for fdo)

Carlos: it isn't a regression that lines outside a rectangle formed by
the start and endpoints are included, it's the intent.

Consider selecting in a document with two columns, starting in the 1st
column 2/3 down the page, ending in the 2nd column 1/3 down the page. In
this case, the correct selection consists entirely of lines that lie
outside the rectangle formed by the start and endpoints (ie, the bottom
1/3 of the 1st column and the top 1/3 of the 2nd column).

The motivation for this patch was that text selection by rectangles is
fundamentally wrong. The correct approach is to reconstruct the reading
order of text; then from two points on the page, find the nearest
insertion points (where an edit cursor would go); swap the insertion
points if necessary; then return the characters between them. The
difficulties lie in inferring the reading order, and determining what
'nearest insertion point' means.

Clicking inside a word, the nearest insertion point is obvious; it's the
nearest character boundary. Click in a blank area, and it's less clear.
In Breuel's algorithms that I used for determining reading order, there
is something that helps here. There, line width is determined by
expanding the line left and right to fit the column it contains. So the
line 'box' contains the initial indent if it is the first line of a
paragraph, or the trailing space in the last line; or the ragged space
for left- or right- justified text.

Poppler doesn't have columns as such, but blocks instead, and as I
recall the line boxes are the tight bounding box of the words contained
in the line. So we can try to determine insertion point by looking for
the nearest block (horizontally and vertically), then the nearest line
(vertically ONLY, so that we ignore indents/ragged space), then nearest
character (horizontally). I mean these to be three different
comparisons, discarding blocks, line and character candidates at each
stage, not some single distance you sum up. The upshot would be that
clicking in blank areas of a line that lie within its block's bounding
box - or even nearby - will choose that line, not the one above or
below.

(It's been ages since I looked at the poppler code, I can't remember if
this heuristic is what the patches do already)

[Bug 1256565] Re: apt-key del gives wrong message if key is not in keyring

2013-12-01 Thread Lars Noodén
This was more a case of worked other than expected. Since it provided
feedback ("OK") I had expected that it would also say about the key's
presence. So maybe the script is better silent. I have been using it
manually and not in another script and usually have followed up with
"apt-key list" to verify that "del" ran as expected. It's not a big
deal and happens only a few times per year.

An error message with a non-zero exit status would be more what I would
expect from the script if it can't find the key. But it sounds like
doing that properly is not trivial.

[Bug 1084236] Re: Pinta eats-up EXIF data after saving JPEG file

2013-12-01 Thread Alan Pater
I use pinta on Ubuntu Linux and the same problem exists. I notice that
it not just EXIF data, but all metadata stored in the photo.

I tested with a Sample image containing a large amount of metadata:
EXIF, IPTC and XMP. In my case I simply used Pinta to rotate the photo
90 degrees and then re-saved it. All the metadata was lost in the
process.

To confirm that the metadata was not in the resulting image I tested
with several tools: EoG and exiftool,

Yes it is better than unplugging the device. I just found out the problem has
bigger scale. It affects other programs too. In Skype only available video
deivce is TV-card. Webcam testing program Cheese does not start:
$ cheese

Problems started after clean install of Ubuntu 13.10. Before I was using

My TV-card is ASUS My Cinema P-7131 Hybrid. And yes, it uses SAA7134

[Bug 1256636] [NEW] Lenovo S531: restart after shutdown

2013-12-01 Thread Klaus Layer
Public bug reported:

I installed 13.10 64-bit on a Lenovo S531. When I try to shutdown the
laptop it reboots. I tried various ways:

- shutdown from KDE
- "shutdown -P now" in terminal
- "poweroff" in terminal
- "init 0" in terminal
- "halt -p" in terminal

it is always the same. The screen goes dark as if it power off and then
it reboots. There is not way to turn it off. Is there anyone who
experienced the same issue before and can me give a hint?

Thanks & regards.

[Bug 1214287] Re: [Dell Inspiron 15R 5521] suspend/resume failure

2013-12-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Nicolas Devillers, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
(not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ?
It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically
you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the
following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc2

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

Same goes for most recent available packaged kernel v3.2.0-57-generic.

I have replaced the source in /usr/src/realtek-r8168-8.036.00/ with the most
recent version (8.037.00) from Realtek's driver site:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2

Compiling v8.037.00 worked fine. The generated module (r8168) installs and
loads fine.
The wired network problem however, persists.

I am using a nVidia Graphics with default drivers and I am unable to
wake up my system without it being crashed with garbage on the screen.
-
This happens in LiveCD mode or installed and all versions of
Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Gbunutu that I have tested, all of them are the same
result. This has stopped moving to Linux when I need it most (Windows
8/8.1 is terrible) I had reported that I thought it was due to dual
graphics (Switchable) but I've disabled the intel graphics in BIOS and
the problem persisted. I think this is a Kernel level problem or perhaps
xOrg related. I can offer no other information as the only thing I can
do is reboot the system and disable sleep entirely.

[Bug 1225753] Re: [ASUS K46CB] Fn + F2 does not switch WiFi Adapter on/off

2013-12-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Dmitry, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please make a comment noting this.

If reproducible in 14.04, could you please test the latest upstream
kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc2-trusty/ and advise to the results?

[Bug 1219687] Re: [Dell XPS 13 L322X] LED won't blink during suspend.

2013-12-01 Thread Bib
A10
08/28/2013
Just the same behaviour, i.e. the led goes solid off on sleep. If I think a
bit, this may be what one wants, because this will spare some µAh and lengthen
sleep time before the battery gets empty. On the other side, no indicator may
be a lack for some others.
Do we really need a setting to drive this behaviour (blink|off on sleep)?
I'd rather spare the time and skills of our gentle devs for other issues, and
keep ~this one~ as is, just to remember nothing will never reach perfection in
this world.

[Bug 1255700] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-12-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michiel Janssens, for regression testing purposes, could you please test
for this in live Lucid via http://old-
releases.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/ ?

** Description changed:

Put system in suspend. Quickly wake it up via sleep button on the keyboard.
(within about 3 to 5 seconds) System goes on briefly (about 3 to 5 seconds),
crashes and reboots.
This crash happened with the lid closed all the time and a separate keyboard
connected.

This issue also happens with the lid open, but mostly I don't have a
separate keyboard connected. In that case it will only wake up by
pushing the power button. Lid opening doesn't trigger a wake, but I
guess I will have to file a separate bug report for that.

WORKAROUND: If I wait much longer (say a minute or longer) before waking
  the system, resume works perfectly.
+
+ WORKAROUND: Press power button instead of suspend button.

[Bug 871752] Re: wrong keyboard layout to enter wifi credential on a non-us keyboard

2013-12-01 Thread kalle
I installed Kubuntu 13.10 yesterday and this is still not changed. This
is the first time I have not used the "alternate" CD and it affected
disk encryption as well. I ended up having to reinstall immediately
because I could not decrypt my disk, since I had entered the passphrase
on a different keyboard layout. When encrypting disks there is no option
in the installer to show the password on screen. Please put keyboard
selection earlier in the install process.

[Bug 1214180] Re: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume

2013-12-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jennifer Hodgdon, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this.
