[Bug 1136110] Re: USB Audio Codec choppy playback

2013-03-29 Thread Tyson Tan
>Tim Richardson
In my case I have tested the AMD64 builds only. On the v3.8.x branch this bug
has appeared since v3.8.0-rc7, every AMD 64 kernel since that version is
affected, including v3.8.4 .

** Description changed:

  1) The release of Ubuntu using
  Ubuntu 12.10 AMD64.
Ubuntu 13.04 AMD64, daily build as new as 20130314.

  2) The version of the package used
  linux-image-3.5.0-26-generic
  linux-image-3.5.7-03050706-generic_3.5.7-03050706.201302221435_amd64.deb
  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.7.6-quantal/
  linux-image-3.7.7-030707-generic_3.7.7-030707.201302111436_amd64.deb
  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7.7-raring/
  linux-image-3.8.0-030800rc7-generic_3.8.0-030800rc7.201302081635_amd64.deb
  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc7-raring/

This bug had been confirmed appearing after the following kernel upgrade step:
  v3.5.0-25 > v3.5.0-26 ~ v3.5.0-27
  v3.5.7.5 > v3.5.7.6 ~ v3.5.7.8
  v3.7.6 > v3.7.7 ~ v3.7.10
  v3.8.0-rc6 > v3.8.0-rc7 ~ v3.8.4
The v3.9 branch has been affected since its very first release.
  v3.9-rc1, v3.9-rc2, v3.9-rc3 v3.9-rc4 are all affected.

  3) What you expected to happen
When using a USB DAC to play audio, the audio should be played normally
without any interruption.

  4) What happened instead
This bug seems to affect only a certain kind of hardware, which is called
"Asynchronous USB Digital Audio Codec (DAC)". It's said that such a DAC hosts
the clock itself (USB Device Host). An ordinary DAC, so called "Synchronous USB
DAC", uses the clock hosted by the mother board, which is not affected by this
bug.

When this bug affects an asynchronous USB DAC, the audio played by the
DAC is constantly interrupted. The playback itself does not stop, but
the output becomes discontinous, filling with constant crackling noises,
  destroying everything the DAC plays.

Using CLI command grep device.buffering to get the buffer from the
devices, those affected kernels are reporting back a different number to
the unaffected devices. The choppy noise is very similar to the
situation when buffer size is not correctly set.

I have tested four USB DACs, two Asynchronous and two Synchronous. Only
the Asynchronous ones are affected by this bug.

  Affected Devices:
  Arce MDAC5
  Arce MDAC mini
  Ayre Acoustics QB-9
+ Dragonfly USB DAC
  Musical Fidelity v2 DAC

USB Audio Streaming Controller on affected devices:
  Texas Instrument TAS1020
  http://www.ti.com/product/tas1020

  Audio DAC on affected devices:
  Texas Instruments PCM1742
  http://www.ti.com/product/pcm1742

This bug had been confirmed appearing after the following kernel upgrade step:
  3.5.0-25 > 3.5.0-26
  3.5.7.5 > 3.5.7.6 (and all 3.5.7.x above)
  3.7.6 > 3.7.7 (and all 3.7.x above)
  3.8.0-rc6 > 3.8.0-rc7 (and all 3.8.x above)
I used Kdiff to find the similar patches, and find the following patches
suspicous:
USB: XHCI: fix memory leak of URB-private data
  (appeared in 3.5.7.6/3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
USB: EHCI: fix for leaking isochronous data
  (appeared in 3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
usb: Prevent dead ports when xhci is not enabled
  (appeared in 3.5.7.6/3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
usb: Using correct way to clear usb3.0 device's remote wakeup feature
  (appeared in 3.5.7.6/3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
USB: EHCI: remove ASS/PSS polling timeout
  (appeared in 3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
USB: EHCI: unlink one async QH at a time
  (appeared in 3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
USB: EHCI: fix timer bug affecting port resume
  (appeared in 3.5.7.6/3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)
USB: EHCI: fix bug in scheduling periodic split transfers
  (appeared in 3.5.7.6/3.7.7/3.8.0-rc7)

Hope someone can look into this bug soon!

[Bug 1161750] [NEW] Showing detected file systems in the advanced partitioner table is wrong

2013-03-29 Thread kobe
Public bug reported:

The feature of showing detected file systems in the advanced partitioner table
has wrong OS information. When there is no actions about edit partition,
displaying system information in the advanced partitioner table is correct. But
then if I delete a partiton row in the middle of the operating system table,
the next OS partition dispaly the wrong information which is the delete
partition's information.
Please pay attention to '/dev/sda5' on the attachment picture. It will help you
know something useful. The picture on the left showed that before I delete
'/dev/sda5' , and the picture on the right showed that after I delete the
partition.

[Bug 1000253] Re: Brother HL-1440 printing extra page with PJL codes

2013-03-29 Thread irrelative
Similar symptoms as above. Occasionally printing PJL codes at the first
page, before queue useful data. After this "garbage" page, the queue
printing as expected.

Printer:
HP-LaserJet-5100
Printer work as local and network shared.
Printer connected through LPT-USB "noname" adapter.

System:
Linux 3.5.0-26-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 26 19:57:24 UTC 2013 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 12.10
Release:12.10
Codename: quantal

CUPS:
1.6.2-1ubuntu3

Printer worked fine with CUPS 1.5.3, PJL codes appeared after update to
1.6.x

After reading this topic, made some changes:
echo blacklist usblp > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-usblp.conf
rmmod usblp

Done some tests, so far no errors.
Logs in attach, but they have been written after blacklisting usblp. Sorry:
work machine, haven't much time for debugging. By the way, I haven't notice any
appropriate errors in logs before. May be, need to change debug level?

[Bug 1161757] [NEW] Network Manager indicator does not always load wireless networks or VPN options

2013-03-29 Thread Chris Roberts
Public bug reported:

When I first login my wireless will connect just fine, but clicking on
the wireless indicator will not list any wireless networks, nor the
usual VPN options. As I use openvpn this is a problem. A simple network-
manager restart always fixes the problem.

This issue occurs 1 in 3 logins and is not restricted to this laptop or
release - I had exactly the same experience on my previous Toshiba
laptop, and on other laptops which I have given to other staff, from
clean installs.

All the laptops have openvpn installed, so it is likely that that is the
common thread.

1) The release of Ubuntu:
12.10

2) The version of the package you are using:

||/ Name   Version  Architecture
Description
+++-==---
ii network-manager0.9.6.0-0ubuntu7 amd64 network
management framework (daemon and userspace tools)
ii network-manager-openvpn0.9.6.0-0ubuntu2 amd64 network

ii network-manager-openvpn-gnome 0.9.6.0-0ubuntu2 amd64 network
management framework (OpenVPN plugin GNOME GUI)
ii openvpn2.2.1-8ubuntu2 amd64 virtual
private network daemon

3) What you expected to happen

For the wireless indicator menu to fully populate, enabling me to change
wireless network, or connect to a VPN.

4) What happened instead

Wireless connected, but menu failed to populate, leaving only the
following options:

Enable wireless
Enable wired
Connection information
Edit connections

Re: [Bug 1159615] Re: Screen corruption

2013-03-29 Thread Lal Samuel Varghese
I had the latest supported version of xserver-xorg-video-intel for
Precise which is 2:2.17. Tried ppa:xorg-swat first which installed
2:2.19. That didn't help. Then tried xorg-edgers which installed
2:2.21.5+ That seems to have worked. Has not seen the issue again
till now. Thanks for your help. Wondering whether I should stay on
with xorg-edgers or should purge it some time.

[Bug 1161771] [NEW] Corrupt filenames in Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server amd64

2013-03-29 Thread Ivan Pupkin
Public bug reported:

ISO file "ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64.iso" contains some files (about
19) with corrupt filename and extension (or only extension). Mainly they
are in this path "/pool/main/l/linux-lts-quantal" but probably I saw one
in other place.

For example, a few of corrupted files:
1) fs-core-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_amd6.ude (there
should be "4" in the end of filename)
2) multipath-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_am.ude (there
should be "d64" in the end of filename)
3) floppy-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_amd64.ude (there
wrong only extension)

So, extension should be "udeb" instead of "ude" and filename should end
with "precise1_amd64" and not with something else.

I discovered this problem today when was trying to install Ubuntu Server from
USB stick (prepared with Universal USB Installer).
Installer hangs with the error "Failed to copy file from CD-ROM".

I downloaded "ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64.iso" from ubuntu.com. And my
MD5 is "af5f788aee1b32c4b2634734309cc9e9" and SHA-1 is
"983cfa31d1a376e0c6d2e431af7e0e5757f8d28a".

After renaming corrupt files istallation was successfully completed.

>/etc/default/rpcbind and /etc/rpcbind.conf don't exist.

Then I do not see why you got the error message that complain about an
option you are no longer using. It works for me.

Check your init scipt..
w3:/etc/init# tail -n11 portmap.conf
script
if [ -e /run/rpcbind/portmap.xdr ] || [ -e /run/rpcbind/rpcbind.xdr ] ;
then
OPTIONS="-w"
fi
if [ -f /etc/default/rpcbind ]; then
. /etc/default/rpcbind
elif [ -f /etc/rpcbind.conf ]; then
. /etc/rpcbind.conf
fi
exec rpcbind $OPTIONS
end script

w3:~# ps aux | grep rpcbi
root 1886 0.0 0.0 19208 1068 ?Ss 08:11 0:00 rpcbind

To Steve Langasek how many are using and really need this warmstart compared to
how many are getting this error message?
It is a nice feature if you often restart this service often on a file-server
but far from everyone need to use warmstart and even less need to restart this
service at all. If someone want this feature they can add it to the their
configuration. Do not force it on everyone where it is not needed and also
dispalys errors.

A better option is to just remove the -w in OPTIONS alltogether. No need
to make global changes for everyone in corner cases. Please, note it in
the NEWS and readme and upstream can fix this warmstart display issue
when they want to.

[Bug 1161771] Re: Corrupted filenames in ISO Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server amd64

2013-03-29 Thread Ivan Pupkin
** Description changed:

ISO file "ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64.iso" contains some files (about
  19) with corrupt filename and extension (or only extension). Mainly they
are in this path "/pool/main/l/linux-lts-quantal" but probably I saw one
  in other place.

For example, a few of corrupted files:
  1) fs-core-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_amd6.ude (there
should be "4" in the end of filename)
  2) multipath-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_am.ude (there
should be "d64" in the end of filename)
  3) floppy-modules-3.5.0-23-generic-di_3.5.0-23.35~precise1_amd64.ude (there
wrong only extension)

So, extension should be "udeb" instead of "ude" and filename should end
with "precise1_amd64" and not with something else.

I discovered this problem today when was trying to install Ubuntu Server from
USB stick (prepared with Universal USB Installer).
Installer hangs with the error "Failed to copy file from CD-ROM".

  I downloaded "ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64.iso" from ubuntu.com. And my
  MD5 is "af5f788aee1b32c4b2634734309cc9e9" and SHA-1 is
  "983cfa31d1a376e0c6d2e431af7e0e5757f8d28a".

After renaming corrupt files istallation was successfully completed.
+
+ P. S. I spend near 2 hours to report this bug, first time after sending
+ bug was not created, then I fought with "clever" redirection from this
+ link "https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug/";. It was really hard
+ to person who want to do something usefull...

[Bug 1161776] [NEW] Failed to download repository information

2013-03-29 Thread S. Patrikios
Public bug reported:

Software Updater
After you get the above lovely message, the wrong move is to press "Try Again".
Should you try "OK", then one of two things happens:
Either you see the updates list, or you get a "The software on this computer is
up to date".
It is obvious that despite the message, repository information has been
downloaded.
As long as you stay away from "try again"!

[Bug 1155222] Re: Cryptsetup initramfs wants EVMS - Bug in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/cryptroot

2013-03-29 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I don't believe in a hardware issue. The hardware has not changed and
the card reader works perfectly once booted... No issue with the HDD
either.

I have lacked time to perform further testings yet, reason why I haven't
given more information.

The only thing I have noticed is that the issue often occurs if I boot
the system with the SD card already inserted, but never occurs if I
first let the linux kernel load, then insert the SD card.

I have however not seen the problem anymore since latest kernel upgrade
(3.8.0-15)

[Bug 1161796] [NEW] Multiple freezing up

2013-03-29 Thread Bruce Bennett
Public bug reported:

Error message and I report it to you. then request for what happens, then
request for how often, then request to give you sensitive materials with the
iformation to report, then it does the same request over and over even after
reporting the problem. Then the OS will pause and another error message and
around and around again. Then if freezes up.
If I do not consent to reporting the errors the OS will function but eventually
starts to hesitate and then freezes up. This seemed to start after I tried to
back up to connical free backup and the process got shut down by the computer
timing out after one hour. This has been going on now for at least a week.

[Bug 1161371] Re: X server sometimes fails to start on MacBook Air 5, 2: no screens found

2013-03-29 Thread Chris Wilson
The problem is that Xorg hasn't registered the igfx as the boot-vga
device and so is looking for a primary display and fails (it loads the
-intel as a secondary GPU only screen).

What is the value in '/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/boot_vga' ?

You can manually specify:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "Device0"
  Driver "intel"
EndSection
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/intel.conf to workaround the issue.

[Bug 1075901] Re: Incorrect ownership or permissions for spool/work directory

2013-03-29 Thread Danny Guinther
Given that this bug has already been marked in progress, this may not be
helpful, but I think this bug is more serious than suggested and should
be made a priority to fix for precise.

I've run into situations where rsyslog will run at 100% CPU with no
useful output or logging to indicate why. Attaching strace to the
process revealed the application was spinning with the following:

futex(0x151f8e0, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 0
open("/var/spool/rsyslog/relp_queue_hostname.0001",
O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_NOCTTY|O_CLOEXEC, 0600) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

In this particular case the problem arose because the remote relp server
was down long enough to fill the local rsyslog in-memory queue and force
rsyslog to spool to disk for relp. However, I have also run into
situations where rsyslog will try to open a spool for the local logging
queue and also run into permissions issues. In either case, if one of
the queues turns to spooling, the write rate of the other queue is
drastically affected, which is possibly why I wasn't getting any useful
logging information from rsyslog once the spinning started.

Up until yesterday I took the approach of restarting the rsyslog process
to remedy the issue which I now understand worked because it cleared the
in-memory queue and thereby postponed further throttling.

This morning I forced the issue by using logger to flood rsyslog (`for i
in $(seq 1 5000); do logger "Testing $i"; done`). Within a few thousand
messages the in-memory queue must have reached its limit, as rsyslog
began to consume 100% cpu and messages only showed up in syslog at a
rate of 5-10 every minute. strace again verified rsyslog was spinning on
the permissions error above.

With rsyslog in this state I issued a `sudo chown syslog:adm
/var/spool/rsyslog` command and immediately cpu usage dropped to
expected levels and the remaining log messages rapidly appeared in
syslog (thousands per minute). With permissions correct I tried flooding
rsyslog again and this time messages went directly to syslog with no
adverse impact on cpu usage.

I am using precise with rsyslog 5.8.6-1ubuntu8.1.

Let me know if there's any other info I can provide or anything else I
can do to help.

[Bug 1161811] [NEW] While upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04, an Error message occurred with unreadable font

2013-03-29 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

During upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04, an unreadable Error message
occurred.

However it was possible to copy the unreadable text and paste it into a
shell.

Thus the text seems to be ok, but the font used to display the text
seems to be unreadable.

See screenshots.

Public bug reported:

in pyqt4 4.10 QTextBlockUserData is broken.
see
http://www.riverbankcomputing.com/pipermail/pyqt/2013-March/032457.html

example in archive
ipython qtconsole
type:
if 1:
  print 1

and you get lots of tracebacks in the terminal:
  File
"/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/IPython/frontend/qt/console/pygments_highlighter.py",
 line 107, in highlightBlock
self._lexer._saved_state_stack = prev_data.syntax_stack
AttributeError: 'QTextBlockUserData' object has no attribute 'syntax_stack'

it also breaks ninja ide.

** Description changed:

During upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04, an unreadable Error message
  occurred.

However it was possible to copy the unreadable text and paste it into a
  shell.

+ The text was: "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration
+ information for evolution-alarm-notify. Some of your configuration
+ settings may not work properly."
+
Thus the text seems to be ok, but the font used to display the text
  seems to be unreadable.

[Bug 1088682] Re: dhclient does not register hostname to dynamic DNS (AD)

2013-03-29 Thread Michael Gliwinski
Hi Dave,

I followed the verification procedure.

Freshly installed ubuntu quantal (server), version of isc-dhcp-client:
4.2.4-1ubuntu10. After getting a lease from Windows DHCP server I
confirmed that DNS wasn't updated.

Version of isc-dhcp-client after adding proposed repo and `sudo apt-get
install isc-dhcp-client`: 4.2.4-1ubuntu10.2

Restarted the interface (ifdown, ifup) and confirmed that the DNS was
correctly updated after getting a lease from the same DHCP server (i.e.
`host $HOSTNAME` returns expected result).

Many thanks for the fix!

[Bug 1161338] [NEW] python-nova should depend on ebtables

2013-03-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Following an upgrade yesterday to python-nova 1:2013.1~rc1-0, we started
getting "Interface eth1 not found" errors in nova-network.log (relevant
logs below). This turned out to be a call to ebtables that was failing
(because it wasn't installed).

There should either be a dependancy on ebtables or at least a more
accurate error message (preferably both).

[Bug 1016671] Re: xfce4-appfinder crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2013-03-29 Thread Shiki
The fixed package should be pushed into Quantal as well.
(I uploaded the patched version into my personal PPA as soon as Nick replied
and didn't have a crash ever since.)

[Bug 1161811] Re: While upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04, an Error message occurred with unreadable font

2013-03-29 Thread Michael Mess
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise running-unity

** Description changed:

During upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04, an unreadable Error message
  occurred.

However it was possible to copy the unreadable text and paste it into a
  shell.

The text was: "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration
information for evolution-alarm-notify. Some of your configuration
  settings may not work properly."

Thus the text seems to be ok, but the font used to display the text
  seems to be unreadable.

  See screenshots.
