[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white
Hi there... Finally I got a solution: I installed emerald-0.9.5 from source this morning and the blank white windows are gone, focus-animation "dodge" is working fine, awesome! The further hard- & software-configuration is like described in my post #152 as "Configuration #3". To compile emerald-0.9.5 for ubuntu 12.04.1 I followed the description at "http://handytutorial.com/install-emerald-in-ubuntu-12-04-12-10/";. The first attempt failed with make complaining missing dependencies. I found the fix at "https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emerald/+bug/968112"; in post #7, there is a further environment-variable to set before: 'export "LIBS=-ldl -lm"'. Great thanks to user "MC Return"! After that, the package built successfully (I used "checkinstall" instead of "make install" to get a installable package). I'm very happy to have emerald back in 12.04 and that the blank white windows are gone ;-) Thank you all out there for your great work and wish you a nice weekend... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/729979 Title: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/729979/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For bash 4.2 the maintainers have implemented features which can be activated to get the wanted behavior. See .inputrc config options. I reported this bug to bash maintainers 2012-March and sent the patch to fix the bug, but at least ubuntu 12.10 is still shipping a bash version with the bug. --- Configuration for .inputrc --- TAB:menu-complete set show-all-if-ambiguous on set menu-complete-display-prefix on --- ** Patch added: "A fix for the bug which prevents set show-all-if-ambiguous and set menu-complete-display-prefix to be used at the same time." https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/53887/+attachment/3500978/+files/complete.c.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/53887 Title: [patch] Command completion should be enhanced To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/53887/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1105893] [NEW] CVE-2013-219 - race conditions when creating or removing home directories for users in local domain
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: A security bug in SSSD === = = Subject: TOCTOU race conditions when creating or removing home = directories for users in local domain = = CVE ID#: CVE-2013-0219 = = Summary: A TOCTOU (time-of-check, time-of-use) race condition was found = in the way SSSD performed copying and removal of home = directory trees. = = = Impact: low = = Acknowledgements: The bug was found by Florian Weimer of the Red Hat = Product Security Team = = Affects default = configuration: no = = Introduced with: 0.7.0 = === DESCRIPTION SSSD versions 0.7.0 through 1.9.3 (inclusive) are vulnerable to a security bug. The removal of a home directory is sensitive to concurrent modification of the directory tree being removed and can unlink files outside the directory tree. When removing a home directory, if another process is modifying that directory at the same time, it becomes possible for the SSSD to unlink files that are outside the directory tree. When creating a home directory, the destination tree can be modified in various ways while it is being constructed because directory permissions are set before populating the directory. This can lead to file creation and permission changes outside the target directory tree using hard links. The fix will be delivered as part of the upcoming 1.9.4 release. There won't be a separate 1.9 security release as the 1.9.4 version will be released later this week. The flaw will be fixed in a separate release for the 1.8 and 1.5 LTM release branches as well. The bug is being tracked in the following Red Hat Bugzilla report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=884254 WORKAROUND These vulnerabilities are present only while creating or removing home directories, so until patched packages are available, you can simply refrain from performing these actions. [Bug 1105898] [NEW] CVE-2013-220 - out-of-bounds reads in autofs and ssh responder
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: = A security bug in SSSD 1.8 and 1.9 === = = Subject: out-of-bounds reads in autofs and ssh responder = = CVE ID#: CVE-2013-0220 = = Summary: Multiple out-of-bounds buffer read flaws were found in = the way the autofs and ssh responders of the SSSD = performed the parsing of input packet values. An attacker = could crash the autofs and ssh responders with the use = of a carefully crafted packet written to the responder = sockets. = = = Impact: low = = Acknowledgements: The bug was found by Florian Weimer of the Red Hat = Product Security team = = Affects default = configuration: yes (as generated by ipa-client-install) = = Introduced with: 1.8.0 = === DESCRIPTION SSSD versions 1.8.0 through 1.9.3 are vulnerable to a security bug. The functions that parse the incoming data packet from client applications in both the ssh and autofs responders do not check the string lengths against the packet length correctly. An attacker could exploit the bug and crash the autofs or the ssh responder with the use of a specially crafted packet sent to the responder sockets, causing a temporary denial of service. If you are not using the autofs or SSH integration, you can disable the vulnerable responders by removing "ssh" or "autofs" respectively from the list of services configured in the [sssd] section of the SSSD config file. The default configuration of a client of FreeIPA - as generated by ipa-client-install - is affected because the ssh responder is enabled by default. [Bug 1105900] [NEW] Latest Kernel Version 3.2.0-36 Causing EXT4-fs Errors
Public bug reported: System: Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64 Unity desktop --- lsb_release -rd; uname -a Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Release:12.04 Linux Voyager 3.2.0-36-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 8 21:44:52 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- Have not experienced any severe problems with this system from Aug 2012 till Jan 20 2013, when kernel 3.2.0-35 was still the active kernel. 2013-01-20 21:01 kernel 3.2.0-36 was installed by the Ubuntu updater. No installation problems occurred. Ever since K3.2.0-36 was the active kernel, the following problem occurred: On every restart error messages like these could be read in /var/log/syslog: syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.624421] EXT4-fs (sda5): orphan cleanup on readonly fs syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.652470] EXT4-fs (sda5): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 2886456 syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.652671] EXT4-fs (sda5): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 2886232 syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.652688] EXT4-fs (sda5): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 2886450 syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.678434] EXT4-fs (sda5): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 2369342 syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.689458] EXT4-fs (sda5): 4 orphan inodes deleted syslog:Jan 22 00:44:37 Voyager kernel: [3.689462] EXT4-fs (sda5): recovery complete This happens no matter whether the system is rebooted (warm reboot) or shutdown and restarted later (cold reboot). The relevant thing is that in the session which is shutdown the active kernel has to be K3.2.0-36. The error will be detected in the next session started after reboot. The workaround was going back to K3.2.0-35. During the first reboot the errors left behind by the previous K3.2.0-36 session were cleaned up. >From then on sticking with K3.2.0-35 the errors would not return after any reboot. Conclusion: Telling from the symptoms Ubuntu 12.04.1 with K3.2.0-36 does not umount the root filesystem properly or does some other bad thing to leave behind orphaned inodes. Returning to K3.2.0-35 will work around the problem Note: --- (1) I have seen this problem on 3 different machines (different hardware) running Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 x86. So it is not a problem caused by a flaw of one special machine. (2) I have seen the same problem after updating Ubuntu 12.10 from K3.2.0-17 to K3.2.0-22. This suggests some change in the latest kernel editions which is common to the current Ubuntu kernels may be involved. [Bug 1105919] [NEW] ubuntu's gnome-terminal plays really bad with X11 forwarding
Public bug reported: Hi. Consider the following setup. A ubuntu quantal machine with unity and a kubuntu quantal laptop. I want to admin the machine remotely from the laptop. I ssh into it with X11 forwarding. Now, I realize that an extra terminal would be nice, so I start gnome-terminal on the machine. Due to the ssh X11 forwarding, the terminal should appear on the laptop. As a matter of fact it does. But the way in which it does so is quirky and wrong. 1. The terminal initially appears at the proper window size. But immediately the window starts shrinking autonomously, until it is about 1 row high and 25 chars wide. 2. At this point, grabbing the window corner I can re-make it the proper size (e.g. 80 chars by 25 rows). Once this is done, the window appears to stay the proper size. 3. However, resizing the window is a strange matter. At some window sizes, you get a half line at the bottom of the screen. At some others a repeated line. At some others an empty white stripe. It takes care to adjust the size so that the terminal works fine. 4. If at this point you maximize the window it does so fine. However, unmaximizing it then brings you back to the problem from point 1. Rather than taking its previous unmaximized size, the window does so for a second. Then starts shrinking by itself until it is 1 row high and a few chars wide. Other terminals (e.g. xterm) work just fine. What is happening? Please fix gnome-terminal so that it does not break X11 standards such as X11 forwarding. Of course then I don't see immediately when it is back - I have to test from time to time. > and when a program has crashed apport wil spam you to report the problem > atleast half a dozen times. In former times I got the option to report a bug and launchpad site was opened. Now it is the same shit as with Windows - I don't know if and where the error will be reported/posted to. In reality I don't see those messages as "spam" - I want to see if there is a problem and I do not want it to silently fail. However, the idea should be to get the appropriate stability in the way that those problems get fixed instead of muting the messages! > Thirdly, we NEED some form of advertising, as Micro$oft has almost > fallen of its throne. Ads on the TV (For example) that tell people that > Linux is the most secure OS ever and doen't get viruses would get people > to make the switch. (But would the switch also cause undetected security > problems to show themselves after being exploited by hackers?) MS really puts more and more advetising - too much advertising I have often seen as the last action of getting customers - when there is no more innovation and other reasons why people should buy the product. I am pretty sure, there will be a momentum of change in the masses even without much publicity. In fact, if many people would - in a gold rush - switch to Linux or Ubuntu in particular, I am pretty sure I would be affected negatively at least in update download rates, so basically I wouldn't see an advantage for me having the others going Linux. However: We need more Linux and Ubuntu users just for the sake of getting the appropriate respect by the software and hardware vendors. Currently far too many vendors do not consider users that are not using Windows (even Mac is still widely ignored). > Fourthly: Stability. Ubuntu definatly needs a netbook version again, as > Ubuntu runs horribly on intel atom processors and lags like hell (I > tried running Ubuntu on a 1.6Ghz dual-core intel atom that had 1gb of > ram). But don't know which bug you mean... Generally spoken, I find it a nice presentation of Mark at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpWHJDLsqTU and I find that Ubuntu does innovate, however at 1:00 he cites several reviews and I must say: At the beginning of 12.04 I had a lot of issues and only since manually updating to 3.5-Kernel I got my 12.04 stable. So from my experience 10.04 was a lot more stable than 12.04 (without the manual hacking)! [Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white
@a-hafner: Andi, I am happy that the instructions for installing Emerald worked for you as well, and I am happy to hear that your white windows are gone and that the dodge focus animation is working also 4 you... :) I am trying to convince the Ubuntu packaging/motu guys to continue packaging Emerald for modern Ubuntu (12.04, 12.10, 13.04), unfortunately I did not succeed with this task yet... :( So every user who wants Emerald to continue to live on their modern Ubuntu system currently has to do some unnecessary complicated actions to make that happen: For those interested in trying Emerald without having to compile from source, LP-user brainpower also maintains a PPA with .deb packages of Emerald for Precise and Quantal: https://launchpad.net/~brainpower/+archive/testing Both versions work on Raring as well, so if you are on raring simply download the .deb files, here for example the AMD64 builds for Quantal (also working on Raring): https://launchpad.net/~brainpower/+archive/testing/+build/3916940 P.S.: Credits for making Emerald compile again on 12.04+ go to brainpower as well, as he was the first to come up with a solution for fixing the compilation...

This is confirmed from multiple users. So, if you have this revision you are lucky :) What about rev 1.0? Gigabyte refuses support for open source based OS's and probably won't fix. Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Hi :) I don't have any of those problems. Perhaps you need to check that you have an official Cd or downloaded from the official website and then md5sum or Sha check the Cd or Usb that you use to install Ubuntu. 1. Overclocking and underclocking. Doesn't this need to be done from inside the bios or by physical changes to the hardware? I've not heard of anyone being able to do this from inside any OS. I agree it would be good if Ubuntu could lead the way on this. 2. If my internet connection drops out i just get a discrete notification and the icon on the top taskbar changes to show i have no network connection. None of that grabs focus and i can keep typing without interference. With crash reports i get a pop-up dialogue just once and have to cancel or allow it (ie it grabs focus). Either way it doesn't appear a 2nd time. The only place i've seen the type of behaviour that MDV described was in Windows, never in any Gnu&Linux. 3. Advertising would be great. Public perception of OpenSource vs MS is generally exactly the opposite of reality. A good example is that greater numbers of desktop users would NOT increase security problems. Currently malware and remote attackers focus on desktop machines despite that only affecting 1 person at a time and thus being an extremely inefficient method of attacking people. Attacking a server would affect far more people. A single server going down could affect hundreds or thousand of people rather than just 1. The reason we don't see more servers getting attacked and taken down could have something to do with the fact that almost no serious servers run Windows. Servers almost entirely run unix-based platforms such as Bsd or Gnu&Linux. 4. Dunno. I've not tried running Ubuntu on Atoms. However, on extremely low spec machines i have found Ubuntu 12.04 (using Unity) runs a LOT better than 8.04 or 10.04 (using Gnome). 10.04 was fine but 12.04 is better. Few to no crashes and no problems. Windows on the same machine constantly runs into problems. I've not had nautilus crash when idle even when i have many tabs open and some of those looking at local folders and others at networked file- shares. Summary So, it sounds to me like MDV either has a corrupted version of Ubuntu or is getting the errors on Windows and somehow think they are on Ubuntu. I would recommend buying some official Ubuntu Cds from the Canonical store and also try re-downloading Ubuntu from the official website. It would be nice to nkow where he/she got the version of Ubuntu from so that we could try to stop corrupted versions from being distributed.
