[Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens

2012-09-23 Thread gitarr
Come on, there must be better ways to make money.

This is a direct attack on users privacy by sending, what the user
thinks are local searches, to Amazon. If this really will be
implemented, Ubuntu and Canonical will lose all the trust they had to
work hard for to gain. Linux users in general are a technical and very
privacy aware people, who cannot and will not stand for this.

I for one always used to go around and promote Ubuntu as a great OS for
everyone, with this rather shady move you'll take very good arguments
away from me and I will have to look elsewhere for a distribution where
the user is king and not the advertising partners of Canonical.

[Bug 1054880] Re: evince crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2012-09-23 Thread Edward Donovan
** Visibility changed to: Public

** Description changed:

I have a 40M PDF that crashed evince, and okular when I tested it too.
I'm running xorg-edgers at the moment, so cairo is a development
version, but that shouldn't affect okular, so I'm trying out the theory
that it's not related to edgers.
+
+ I'll upload the big pdf if needed.

Perhaps it's poppler. And perhaps it's a dupe. I'll let the retracer
  work on it. Thanks.

[Bug 1045047] Re: Firewire camera is not recognized

2012-09-23 Thread Stefan Richter
> I suppose this points to defect HW?

Yes.

> How easy are these things to break?

Ports which adhere to the old IEEE 1394:1995 specification are
electrically more prone to damage during hotplugging than later
1394a:2000 hardware. And the 4-pin iLink ports are mechanically not
very reliable. Damaged 6-pin 1394a ports or 9-pin 1394b ports on the
other hand are not very common but do occasionally happen.

> Will try older Ubuntu later.

If you have the opportunity, please do so. A driver regression is
unlikely to be the cause of this problem but it would be good if you
could test with older firewire-ohci + firewire-core kernel drivers, or
ideally with the ohci1394 + ieee1394 + raw1394 kernel drivers of kernel
2.6.36 or older to be sure.

Its actually just a build issue so not a real bug (relief). Its already
reported as bug 1053288 so I am marking this one as duplicate. I do
believe that this may have actually fixed since I can't reproduce it
anymore. The issue happened for me on Friday.

[Bug 1053302] [NEW] ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several cases

2012-09-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm running 12.04, and prefer the more conservative style "normal" scrollbars
over the overlay scrollbars. I have set them to false in the terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars false

However after doing so, with some apps (e.g. Nautilus, Document Viewer) my
scrollbars only view a vertical bar, but no arrows on the top and bottom to
scroll up and down (please find the screenshot attached for the bottom part).
With some programs these are shown though, for instance Gummi and Texmaker.

It would make a big difference (for instance when having to scroll pdf
documents containing several hundreds of pages) to have those arrows
reinstated. Moreover, it is more aestetic and adds to the pleasant
working experience Unity is.

This will happen if you install the openmotif package directly from
http://motif.ics.com/ and then try to install the libmotif or libmotif-
dev package from Ubuntu.

Remove the other openmotif package first. Marking invalid.

[Bug 1054883]

2012-09-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1054883/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1032456] Re: Canon inkjets (and some other printers) print only half of the last page after 20120801 upgrade to v1.5.3-0ubuntu2

2012-09-23 Thread Ralph Myers
I have 12.04 (Xubuntu) and have cups (1.5.3-0ubuntu4).
Rebooted a few times as well.
My Canon MP500 and 98% of the time it hangs halfway through the last page.
Printer becomes unresponsive and needs to be power cycled.

Looks like this bug is still there.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist with troubleshooting
this problem.

[Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2012-09-23 Thread Lukas
As far as I understand, the problem has been fixed for overwriting by
rename and overwriting by truncate. Is it an issue at all for just
overwriting part of a file, without truncating it first?

I realize that there are basically no guarantees when fsync() is not
used, but will such writes to already allocated blocks be written on
every commit interval (by default 5 seconds)?

Or can the changes possibly remain in the cache much longer, since there
is no chance of metadata corruption? (It would seem that the inode
wouldn't have to change except for modification time, and unlike for
newly allocated blocks, there is also no security issue, since the owner
of the file can only get access to his own stale data after a crash, not
somebody else's, as it would be with newly allocated blocks.)

[Bug 1053173] Re: minidlna crashes on boot when no active network connection

2012-09-23 Thread Assaf Shachar
Attached the minidlna.conf upstart init file.
Here is how to use it:

First You need to copy it to /etc/init/
cp minidlna.conf /etc/init/

Then you need to remove minidlna from the old systemv init system by typing:
sudo update-rc.d -f minidlna remove

now you need to symlink the upstart script to /etc/init.d/ like these:

cd /etc/init.d/
sudo ln -s /lib/init/upstart-job minidlna

now you can check that it works by typing

$ sudo service minidlna start
minidlna start/running, process 8369

$ sudo service minidlna stop
minidlna stop/waiting

$ sudo initctl start minidlna
minidlna start/running, process 8417

$ initctl status minidlna
minidlna start/running, process 8417

If you get these work then you good to go.

Disclaimer: I'm not an upstart expert but theses has worked for me and minidlna
is up and running after boot.
Hope these helps.

[Bug 1052861] Re: After upgrade to new kernel version, machine crashes after a few hours of uptime

2012-09-23 Thread JanCeuleers
v4 seems to behave similarly to v3: it also crashed after many hours,
i.e. after a longer period than the released -43 package and the v1 and
v2 packages did. But it still crashed.

Once again I'm back on -42. I think I now need to stay on this package
for a couple of days just to make sure that I'm not sending you on a
wild goose chase (i.e. some coincidence perhaps due to flaky harware).

[Bug 875440] Re: Cannot authenticate with saslauthd and mysql

2012-09-23 Thread Arnold Nijboer
I've had the same problem.
what fixed it for me was to change in /etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf:

Replace:
auxprop_plugin: mysql

with:
auxprop_plugin: sql
sql_engine: mysql

and change the %u in "sql_select: select password from mail_user where
login = '%u'" to %u@%r

thats all..

This should be fixed upstream rather than here. Could you please file it
there?

The area to look at is src/screenshot-filename-builder.c, function
build_path. The string is localised, so there will be an impact on
translations.

[Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens

2012-09-23 Thread payload
I suggest a opt-in with a privacy protection notice.

- to prevent accidental leakage of local information (file paths)
  - have a separate search bar for online searches
  - a local filter won't make it, cause an error in the file path (typing
"secrez-filename" won't exactly match locally, but some fuzzy matching online
would alarm some special person "oh, where is a 'secret-filename'!")

- to inform the user what data is shared with others
  - pop up a notice about what, who, why (the obvious needs to be told) etc.
  - if he wants it or not ("no" and "yes")
  - consequences in case of clicking "no"
  - a link to the third party (amazon) privacy agenda
  - required by german law (especially cause its commercial? would need to look
that up)
  - a checkbox somewhere to revoke

- granularity and configurability is your judgement

I should add that this is a problem only if the system / is part of the
array itself and therefore must be setup in initrd.

[Bug 1003551] Re: picard crashes when started 12.10

2012-09-23 Thread melchiaros
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1005677 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1005677

Thank you Alain for invastigation.

In respect ot #2 the formulation "it may be the explanation" was used
which is not "Contrary to what melchiaros wrote on 2012-07-07 this is
not all related to nvida" as in #9.

Commnet #2 also gives the info "I have tried to reproduce, but I can not
provoce a crash." which is many more than " He commented without prior
researching." in comment #9. And the hint to the gtk widget style, was
not given here directly, even it was visible in bug 1003568

[Bug 410534] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_slice_alloc()

gnome-settings-daemon is automatically respawning once killed, so I'm
not sure how to attach Valgrind to it (or how to stop it from
respawning). I'm searching the web for info, but if someone sees this
please drop me a hint to speed things up, thanks.
