[Bug 1047744] [NEW] update fails with "no Package: header"

2012-09-08 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

I booted up my machine after 3 months and it refuses to perform software
updates using Muon or with apt-get from cmdline.

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/linux.ntuoss.org_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_restricted_binary-amd64_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I ran apt-get clean and apt-get update then replicted the same from
cmdline with apt-get dist-upgrade

Linux owl 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu 12.0.4

Why did this this happen on its own? did something break in the last
update? Last update in dpgk.log.1 was on 29/05/2012 and no errors are
logged in it.

I am unable to run ubuntu-bug because the same problem prevents i from
running to completion successfully.

Thanks

[Bug 1047659] Re: mountall fails to activate swap if device contains multiple filesystem signatures

2012-09-08 Thread Steve Langasek
Thanks. This confirms that it's not an issue with trying to reference a
dm device by UUID.

You mention that 'swapon -a' works. Does 'swapon /dev/mapper/datagram-
swap_1' also work?

I ask, because there really isn't any blkid handling in mountall, so the
presence of multiple signatures shouldn't bother mountall at all.

Could you also try editing /etc/init/mountall.conf to replace the 'exec
mountall' line with:

  exec mountall --daemon --verbose $force_fsck $fsck_fix >
/run/mountall.log 2>&1

reboot, and attach the resulting /run/mountall.log file?

[Bug 1047389] Re: java -avian sigsegv on startup if used with a different OpenJDK 7 compared to the one it got built against.

2012-09-08 Thread Xerxes Rånby
Its is ok from Ubuntu view if Avian is compatible with IcedTea 7 2.3.2 and
later that uses the new string layout.
It is important that the avian package continue to work after IcedTea 7 and
OpenJDK security updates that we can not plan of forehand when they occour.

The avian package and the openjdk package gets rebuilt at differnt time.
Best would be if there was no built time dependency and hardcoded
offsets to prevent breakage when we upgrade to new openjdk versions and
security updates.

Re: [Bug 1047423] Re: openjdk-6-jre broken

2012-09-08 Thread Peter Glässel
Dear Matthias,
icedtea-netx was installed. I reinstalled, but the problem persists.
Then I saw that libnetx-java was not installed. Installing it did not
solve the problem. Is there a problem with dependencies? When installing
icedtea-netx openjd-6-jre and openjdk-jre-lib were requested!

If I open koala.jnlp via nautilus, icedtea-netx is correctly recognized as
the default application for jnlp. On opening, however, nothing happens.
javaws still reports not being installed.

I hope this problem can be sorted out.
I know that 12.04 does NOT have this problem.

Best regards ... Peter Glassel

[Bug 931168] Re: 14e4:4727 brcm80211 Wifi driver : cannot connect to channels>11

2012-09-08 Thread Mossroy
This issue seems to be solved in 12.10 Quantal beta 1.
I ran it with a live USB : wifi on channel 13 is detected and ubuntu connects
successfully to it.
iw reg get => 00
iwlist wlan0 channel => all 13 channels

It's using the same brcmsmac driver as in 12.04.1, so I suppose it might
come from an update in this driver?

In any case, jt's solved in 12.10. That's good news!
I'd like to help investigate if there is a way to backport this fix in 12.04,
because it's a LTS.

I suppose I could test with an upstream or backported kernel. Which
version should I test? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ?
Another one?

[Bug 1029085] Re: Stuttering in games with high fps and Nvidia

I have played a little with the settings again and I found the cause.
You can get stuttering with activated Vsync in Compiz or with "Force

gone and without the second option Compiz has graphical glitches and
stuttering. But both of them cause this ugly stuttering in games.
Activating Vsync in the Nvidia settings has no effect on Compiz or
games.

[Bug 1047750] [NEW] Loops during playback

2012-09-08 Thread Uqbar
Public bug reported:

>From time to time, I cannot precisely reproduce it, VLC runs two or three
>loops over the same segment, usually shorter than 0.5 sec. Only with audio.
It usually happens during the first 1 or 2 minutes of playback.
Video doesn't loop.
The same happens also to LMMS, mplayer (CLI) and Youtube video playback with
both Chrome and Firefox.
I do understand this could NOT be tightly linked to VLC in its own, but
possibly to some library.

Unfortunately, your workaround didn't work. There are still some files
which didn't show their thumbnails. Just like before; randomly, some of
them did and the others didn't.

[Bug 1043654] Re: [FFe] New version of zentyal-samba

2012-09-08 Thread Iulian Udrea
What are these: #1042861, #1042859? Are -ltps and -ups completely new
packages? If yes why are the bugs filed agains -core? Are -ltps and -ups
required to make -samba work?

You're making this process harder than it ought to be. At the beginning
you said that -samba has to be updated in order to work with -common and
-core. I wonder why you've uploaded -common and -core if you already
knew that -samba would not work.

Why do we have to update -users and -squid? What are the relationships
between these packages?

I would prefer to have these packages in a working state at the moment.
What is needed in order to acomplish this?

I'd not considered doing it that way - it would de-couple samba
startup from cups which I agree is preferable - I'll take a look and
do the rework early next week.

Thanks for the feedback.

[Bug 1047762] [NEW] java-6-openjdk-amd64 + Eclipse not working

2012-09-08 Thread gadLinux
Public bug reported:

During last update of Ubuntu 12.10 beta the JRE for the system was
updated to:

  Selección RutaPrioridad Estado

  *0/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java 1071 modo
automático

This means openjdk-7

It started to crash eclipse. I mean, the system can run eclipse but
weird things started to happen. See attached screenshot.

I had to go back to sun jre.

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Any of the following JDKs seems to be affected.
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java

The problem is that no log is show, just random errors in the environment. But
I was able to reproduce 100% of time.

[Bug 1047761] [NEW] console-setup/utf8

2012-09-08 Thread timth
Public bug reported:

console-setup: 1.70ubuntu5

Hi, i'm using ubuntu 12.04.1/LTS with latest updates i have some trouble
with fonts in tty. By default there is no national language support in
console (squares instead symbols). So I run sudo dpkg-reconfigure
console-setup, choose UTF8->cyrilic->TerminusBoldVGA->14, then run
setupcon and everything fine. But after rebooting, the console was
resets to defaults without NLS.

LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8 is everytime, in Xorg everything is ok.

[Bug 1047766] [NEW] Mozilla warns browser-plugin-vlc is out-of-date

2012-09-08 Thread skierpage
Public bug reported:

The Mozilla browser plug-in check at http://www.mozilla.com/en-
US/plugincheck/ warns that I have an outdated version of the VLC Web
plugin:

Version 2.0.1 Twoflower, copyright 1996-2011 VideoLAN and Authors
  http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
  Outdated Version

but I believe this is the most recent version of the browser-plugin-vlc
package available for Kubuntu 12.04 amd64 , version 2.0.0-1 from March
14.

I have vlc version 2.0.3 from package version 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
installed, this seems separate from the VLC browser plug-in.

[Bug 1047261] Re: ecryptfs_encrypt_page: Error attempting to write lower page (regression)

2012-09-08 Thread arty
I noticed that bug because my IntelliJ IDEA started freezing while
opening the project. Thankfully it shows some information about
background processes it runs, so I knew the problem was in indexing
process. That process goes through the files in the project and creates
indexes of those in IDEA's folder, so it uses filesystem quite
intensively. First thing I tried to do was to delete indexes folder, and
that didn't work: one of the subfolders was invulnerable. I couldn't
delete it neither from command line nor from Nautilus. I could move it
to trash, however. That's when I started to think something's wrong with
the filesystem.

While I was reporting this bug I didn't have IDEA running, and still was
seeing new errors in the log. I can't name all the processes at the
moment, as this was happening on my working notebook. But besides normal
Ubuntu 12.04 processes I had Opera, Chrome, Skype, Dropbox, Telepathy
running.

[Bug 1047771] [NEW] BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)

2012-09-08 Thread Swen Kühnlein
Public bug reported:

$ gnome-control-center

(gnome-control-center:8184): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-control-center'
received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 147 error_code 1 request_code 153 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 1047067] Re: [FFE][UIFE][regression] workspace switcher layout needs adjustments

2012-09-08 Thread Sam Spilsbury
** Description changed:

Workspace switcher layout should centralized as it was in 12.04.
currently it looks like as attached in the screenshot.
+
+ == CHANGE ==
+
+ A distro patch from 12.04 didn't get ported over. It was ported to use
+ the new compiz API when linaro released their version of compiz for
+ 12.04, so I've taken this patch as it was and applied it. A few changes
+ were made to get the code under test.
+
+ == TEST ==
+
+ Unit tests are included, they don't cover a very large amount of the
+ code (many changes in the diff are as a result of refactoring some
+ larger functions into smaller ones, and these changes are not trivially
+ testable).
+
+ The tests that are there they do cover functionality which is
+ substantially new, such as the code to calculate the spread view offset
+ in world co-ordinate space (60 tests) and the code to determine which
+ viewports should be lit (5 tests).
+
+ == WHY ==
+
+ If we don't have this patch, we'll regress significantly from 12.04 in a
+ way that is easily avoidable.
+
+ == REGRESSIONS? ==
+
+ Not anything substantial from 12.04, the only potential is regressions
+ that might stem from the subsequent changes to get the code under test
+ (however I found that doing this caught a lot more potential bugs).

[Bug 927782] Re: include the Atheros AR8131/AR8151/AR8152/AR8161/AR8162 Ethernet driver

2012-09-08 Thread sami
@Michael,
I have an AR8161 and it is working well with kernels 3.2.0-29, 3.2.0-30 and the
brand new 3.2.0-31.

Moreover the meta package "linux-backports-modules-cw-3.4-precise-
generic" is now available so updates should be automatic when upgrading
the kernel.

Thank you guys !

[Bug 817212] Re: Number of threads stuck on two

2012-09-08 Thread Julian Taylor
during compilation the number of threads of the build machine is hardcoded into
the code:
gcc ... -DMAX_CPU_NUMBER=4

apparently the ubuntu build machine had two cores

with these type of libraries it is always better to build them on the machine
your are using them one so you get the optimal performance.
binary packages can only provided the lowest common denominator.

Thank you in advance

Without there will be no bughandling form our side.

[Bug 1047778] [NEW] memory upgrade from 4gb to 8gb... kernel generic failed to use extended memory

2012-09-08 Thread Ville Pilvio
Public bug reported:

Firstly, my apology for a relatively inexact bug report but i'll try to
mention the important factors.

After purchasing another 4gb memory for my ubuntu desktop, the BIOS
identified the memory correctly. Ubuntu showed only 4gb memory. Since
the PC had Ubuntu installed pre-memory-upgrade, it was using the generic
kernel which was by default correct for a 4gb PC.

To get my new memory recognized in ubuntu, i had to google a fix to
this, which was a nicely documented ubuntu howto and the fix was a one-
line command to get the PAE version of the kernel activated. A reboot
later, the memory issue was fixed.

I would like Ubuntu, somewhere near the end of the startup process, to
automatically check for the scenario "if the PC is using the generic
kernel, but BIOS memory is over 4gb, to pop-up a suggestion to activate
PAE"

In line with making "things just work" this should be relatively simple
to implement but would assure end users are not left alone to try to fix
similar issues. At least Ubuntu 12.04 LTS did not pick up on this
automatically.

Does anyone second this?
Is the proposed modification sensible and doable?

[Bug 1047740] Re: Unity-lens-photo can only search one tag at a time

2012-09-08 Thread Jorge Ortega
Thanks for looking into it.

I understand that the bug doesn't produce crashes, or otherwise affects
the systems in a drastic manner but it limits dramatically the
usefulness of the lens. It seems to me that to give it low importance
doesn't maybe acknowledge this.

Anyway, as I said thanks for looking into it.
Regards

2012-09-08 Thread alexsavio
None of the above worked on my computer, running Ubuntu 12.04.1 amd64.
The transfer icon on the Unity panel shows up, but can't access the copy dialog
in any way.
