[Bug 995714] Re: KERNEL PANIC (iMac 5,1) General Protection fault

2012-05-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andrew Rogers, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please capture the oops following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ?
As well, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available
that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine
the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.
This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located
at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing'
text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Yes probably a good idea the computer was so old that I recycled it. The
problem maybe left though it should have little effect on anyone more
than 12 years after it's launch.

Title:
[M4] Dell Inspiron 8000 shows split display on LiveCD

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  [Problem]
On LiveCD boot, desktop is split into several unequally sized overlapping
areas on the screen.  Works okay with -vesa at 800x600.

  [Tested with]
Live cd of Ubuntu 8.04 ( Hardy Heron ) and Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 and Beta 1 (
Intrepid Ibex )

  Dell Inspirion 8000
Processor: Intel PIII mobile 900\700Mhz speedstep, MMX SSE
  Cache: 256 KBytes
  Bus speed: 100 Mhz
  Chipset: Intel 815E
  Southbridge: Intel 82801 BA (ICH2-M)
  AGP version 2.0
ATI Mobility 128 M4 AGP 4X 16 MBytes RAM graphics adapter

  [Original Report]
I expected Ubuntu to load normally and be able to recognize the graphics
adapter without any problems since this is an old adapter this should not be a
problem since both new and old hardware should work with it anyway. Mobile
drivers are not as common as desktop variants but today laptops are outselling
desktops in most segments.I don't know what kind of experience Ubuntu would
have given me on this old low spec hardware since the live cd may not have
given it justice though i know that it would become e waste if it isn't
possible to use it. It is really loud and flaming hot but it could work as some
kind of server or backup to my other computers. Sure I'm mostly interested to
know that it can work rather than that i need it to work still support would be
a great thing.

Under the Safe Graphics mode Ubuntu seem to be able to display the
desktop correctly though not at full size\resolution. Rez 800x600
  pixel

What happened under the live cd was that the screen was corrupted with
screwed desktop where it was wrongfully positioned and where it look
like having a part of two desktops on one screen overlapping each
other, though in reality and after investigation the screen were
shopped up into three different fields and then thrown around so that
when the pointer moved from one field to another the pointer might
appear on a different part of the screen. The fields were not equally
sized there were two-three bigger ones and one-two smaller ones. The
CD was working very hard all the time as well as the CPU and many
times the computer seemed to freeze though this could be just the poor
performance of the live cd when i ran the hardware test in Gnome to
send you a report which I decided would be easier to write by myself
instead since it just didn't finish.

It is very hard to get a feel for Ubuntu when things don't work or
just barely works thus I want to say that improvements of the live CD
  is welcome.

Also the loading screen of Ubuntu have a progress bar that moves back
and forth this isn't really any helpful since you don't have any
visual clues about how much is left in the loading process the same
goes for when scanning hardware in the hardware test.

Testing with Ubuntu  8.10 Appha 4 Intrepid Ibex:
Both as Live CD and installed with Wubi:

I've now tried using the computer with Intrepid Ibex and some improvement
seem to have been made. For starters
This is probably a combination of improvements to ATI drivers and the design
of X.Org.

The result is not the same for the live CD and when Ubuntu is installed
through Wubi. Why this is I don't know.
Crashes with Intrepid Ibex Alpha 4 under live CD wasn't able too boot all the
way to GDM nor to the Ubuntu loading screen, This was displayed: Version number
of Busybox and then ash and something called Initramfs and a prompt to write
commands.

When Intrepid Ibex Alpha 4 was installed with Wubi several errors
appeared during boot up if this is the result of the unstable Alpha 4
or the physical CD I don't know.

Though the praphical boot up could finish I noticed screen corruption
during the Ubuntu boot screen where the progress indicator was
duplicated and\or half visible on other places than the right

piovisqui, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As a

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would

done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

does it show a status. My BIOS has been updated to the very latest
version and all packages are up to-date.

[Bug 992062] Re: Mouse Pauses when Crossing Screen Borders

2012-05-07 Thread stevosn
Hey!
Thanks for the reply, this solved the issue..

Imho, I wouldn't say it's totally useless. Actually it would be good to
be able to change the treashold so that it's not sticking for ages at
the border..

Cheers!
Stevo

[Bug 943696] Re: Enter key does not work either on JDK 6 or 7

2012-05-07 Thread Niclas Paul
Thanks Tim, installing a fresh copy of Netbeans 7.1.2 from netbeans.org
worked for me, too! I don't use Unity, so I didn't bother with the
plugin. I guess the problem will go away for real when the repositories
get updated from 7.01->7.1.2

[Bug 982684] Re: sudo doesn't apply global environment settings from /etc/environment

2012-05-07 Thread zub
I just found another usecase where fixing this issue helps:

sudo apt-add-repository FOO

does not work when http_proxy is required. (As http_proxy from env. is
not set and apt's proxy is not used.)

[Bug 982684] Re: sudo doesn't apply global environment settings from /etc/environment

2012-05-07 Thread zub
Not to mention that when user does not set proxy for apt (in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d), then neither "sudo apt-get ..." nor "sudo aptitude ... "
nor update-manager at large work. And my guess is that whatever is the GUI tool
provided in Ubuntu to set proxy, it does not configure apt proxy.
One has to resort to sudo -i followed by the command. Then proxy is set.
Solving this ticket should also solve these issues.

[Bug 990979] Re: west-chamber-dkms 20100405+svn20110916.r119-1: west-chamber kernel module failed to build

2012-05-07 Thread Maarten Bezemer
If you have Precise, you just need to check if you have precise-updates
available in /etc/apt/sources.list:
  deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted

And just update/upgrade your system. Afterwards you should have version
1.41-2ubuntu0.1 of xtables-addons

If you do not have Precise, you need 'pinning':

I use dual monitor display. I switch to dual display in the "Display and
Monitor" section of the KDE System settings application. Switching to
dual mode is done correctly, but when I switch back to single mode (eg:
disable the external VGA), Xorg completly crashes, both of the monitors
show nesties, and no keyboard response (unable to switch to text console
with alt+ctrl+F1)

As I can see, other functionality of the OS continue work, I can connect
to my PC with SSH from another host. Xorg process uses 100% of CPU after
the crash, and the only thing that helps is killing the Xorg process by
SIGKILL.

[Bug 994495] Re: libsipe.so is linked against missing libgmime-2.4.so.2

2012-05-07 Thread Florian Echtler
Thanks for the hint, apparently that was indeed the case. "apt-get
install --reinstall pidgin-sipe" fixed this; the output of "apt-cache
policy" made me believe I had installed the package from the official
precise repo.

Sorry for the noise, thanks for your help.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-07 Thread Hein
Hi,

I also have these random freezes (Pangolin 64 bit on a Acer 5720 laptop
with Nvidia Graphics and the restricted / Closed source Nvidia driver
installed).

I have noticed though that it is 'only' the screenoutput that freezes/
comes to a halt. Yes, the mouse cursor still moves, but nothing else
seems to happen. But as I was copying lots of files and my screen
freezed I did not touch my system until I was confident that the copy
process should be ready: in fact the control leds of my HD worked! and
my Wifi indicator also worked (I was also downloading a file).

After a while (led of HD and Wifi returned to idle) I switched off my
system and rebooted the system. The files were copied correctly and my
download was saved properly in my downloads directory.

I have also noticed that starting any browser (Firefox / Chrome) will
hang the system more quickly. I have also noticed that other 'screen-
intensive' software like e.g. shotwell or any fotoviewer will cause the
system to hang if used heavily.

This bug seems to be highly related to screen output and apparantly
nothing else. As Pdparo reports this on AMD Radeon as well (and even
without the closed source driver installed) it is most likely not a
problem directly caused by those drivers.

I have noticed that my screens sometimes 'flashes' (on/off, but then
very very fast) as it seems to refresh the screen.

If you google this subject you will find lots of posts in forums as
well: this seems to be a huge issue!

I hope this information will help killing this nasty bug asap!

[Bug 995812] [NEW] share samba doesn't work easily

2012-05-07 Thread J-Paul BERARD
Public bug reported:

Share a folder in a simple domestic network need to check the share item in the
folder properties.
Ubuntu ask to install samba and libpam-smbpass. After reboot and check this

After this point, it should work ! It would be quite easy.

It doesn't !

2 more things were necessary :
I had to add system-config-samba and add again the share folders.

Tested on

Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Desktop - 32 Bit

gedit:
  Installed: 2.30.3-0ubuntu0.1
  Candidate: 2.30.3-0ubuntu0.1
  Version table:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.30.0git20100413-0ubuntu1 0

List of active plugins:
gconftool-2 -g /apps/gedit-2/plugins/active-plugins
[modelines,spell,docinfo,filebrowser,time,externaltools]

No output when started in terminal and running the remove trailing spaces tool
that uses identical sed:
#!/bin/sh

sed 's/[[:blank:]]*$//'

So I guess it's not sed's fault.

[Bug 995817] [NEW] share samba doesn't work easily

2012-05-07 Thread J-Paul BERARD
Public bug reported:

Share a folder in a simple domestic network need to check the share item in the
folder properties.
Ubuntu ask to install samba and libpam-smbpass. After reboot and check this

After this point, it should work ! It would be quite easy.

It doesn't !

2 more things were necessary :
I had to add system-config-samba and add again the share folders.

** Description changed:

- Share a folder in a simple domestic network need to check the share item in
the folder properties.
- Ubuntu ask to install samba and libpam-smbpass. After reboot and check this
item again, Ubuntu ask to change the permissions.
- After this point, it should work ! It would be quite easy.
-
- It doesn't !
-
- 2 more things were necessary :
- I had to add system-config-samba and add again the share folders.
- From the other computer (with Ubuntu) I must connect with the IP adress to
see these share folders !
-
- Is it normal ? Thanks !
-
- server : Ubuntu 12.04 (updated from 11.10). Client : fresh install 12.04

[Bug 995743] Re: Internal SD card reader is not working on Dell XPS 17 L502X

2012-05-07 Thread Sparhawk
Sorry for my ignorance, but the FAQ and the page you linked to doesn't
quite give me enough information.

Firstly, what kind of risks are involved in installing the latest
upstream kernel?

Also, are you talking about installing /~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/current ?

Cheers.
