[Bug 883748] [NEW] Suspend/resume corrupts external data storage devices

2011-10-30 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu will permit suspend/resume (have not tried hibernate) without
attempting to unmount any external USB storage devices, even though
processes may still have open files on these devices. After the system
is resumed, the USB storage devices may not be present, due to not
having been re-enumerated yet. This can and DOES result in data
corruption on the filesystem on the external device, as evidenced by
errors in dmesg and having to do journal replays. I am not sure that the
dmesg here will have the whole story (due to dmesg -c having been run as
part of another bug report) but the parts that may not be there
basically boil down to reiserfs being very unhappy that the block device
was yanked out from under it.

As a policy decision, it is WRONG to allow suspend to take place unless
externally-attached USB block devices are still mounted. The system
needs to attempt to unmount everything in /media prior to suspending,
and needs to FAIL TO SUSPEND (throwing an error) if all devices cannot
be unmounted due to some of the mount points being in use.

UhmApparently, the program does not "finds" the locales
directory.

Please do these two tests:

1. Copy the file solitari_en_EN.qm in the same directory and changes
the name to solitari_en_US.qm

2. Try selecting other languages («Idioma» menu option).

Regards!

Thanks. That log was a lot more helpful but still not really sufficient,
unfortunately.

Since the segmentation fault happened in native code, I think you'll need to do
"sudo sysctl kernel.yama.ptrace_scope=1" to allow gdb to get the rest of the
stack trace when the crash happens. More details in
/etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf.

[Bug 883723] Re: package ttf-freefont 20090104-7 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package ttf-freefont is already installed and configured

2011-10-30 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. If this does resolve your bug please set its status to
Invalid.  Thanks in advance!

[Bug 883533] Re: HighContrast miss shutdown button

2011-10-30 Thread Ilan Tal
In order to reduce Internet time I downloaded a CD and updated both computers
from the same CD. It could be that the CD is missing the png file for the icon
you have showing.
If you can tell me the file name and location I can check it. Likewise, if you
can tell me where to get the missing file, I would like to start to use the
high contrast since the dropbox icon is UGLY in the Ambiance version (you can't
see clearly when it is updating).

There is something else I'd like to ask, which also may be missing from
the CD. In 11.04 I could choose at login if I wanted to see the menus in
Hebrew or English. That option is gone in 11.10, which means I can't
update many of my friends who feel much more comfortable in Hebrew. What
I would like to ask you is: do you see Italian at login time?

Thanks,
Ilan

[Bug 806848] Re: unity-panel-service at 100% cpu when opened /w rb without album cover

2011-10-30 Thread Chow Loong Jin
I don't think Banshee's at fault here. And probably not Rhythmbox
either. Both of them just implement the MPRIS2 interface and let the
sound menu take care of that. If anything, it's indicator-sound or
unity. I'm marking the Banshee task as invalid.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2011-10-30 Thread Marek Paśnikowski
I just want to point out, that decision to go for XFCE without checking out
current (4.7) KDE is not a most sensible one. Linus gave up KDE 4 because the
development 4.0 version was picked up as a stable one by so many distributions.
4.0 was never supposed to be released "into the wild". This situation pictures
two problems:
1. Give every complex software time to mature and let it grow all planned
features before giving it a deciding tryout.
2. Even if the software was lost for you, give it another chance once in a
while.
Seriously - KDE SC is an amazing piece of software now. I wish Ubuntu adopted
KDE as its main desktop environment. I know its much work, but I wish it
nevertheless.

[Bug 883754] [NEW] No option to select app from custom location to open type of files

2011-10-30 Thread bartje
Public bug reported:

When you have a type of file, for example a Gimp file, .xcf, I used to be able
to select a custom built Gimp as default to open the file with, by browsing to
the directory I built it in.
The option to select the application through a path is gone.

This is a serious regression, limits the freedom of the user, and makes
it impossible to use custom built applications as default when the user
wants, or even needs it. Ubuntu does not always ship the latest and
greatest version of software, and sometimes these are exactly the ones
that are needed.

The only options that appear are the apps installed by the software
center, or 'search online', which are neither what I need. The option to
select the app from the users custom location is necessary.

I hope this will be fixed very soon.

[Bug 877671] Re: Logon screen - language switch trouble

2011-10-30 Thread Bodinux
Only tried with lightdm. There is no way to change the keyboard layout
on the logon screen and there is no direct indication of the current
layout.

This is a regression from the blueprint from Matt Zimmerman which dates back
from 2005 :
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/gdm-keyboard-layout

As of Ubuntu 5.10, the initial keyboard layout used before login is part of
the X.org configuration file,
 and cannot be adjusted by the user until after login. This is problematic
because:

The user may not be able to login if the layout is incorrect

The X keyboard layout is currently "guessed" from the console layout chosen
in the installer,
and this process is known to be imperfect

Different users may require different keyboard layouts

This requires that the keyboard layout be asked for ahead of time on the
live CD,
which is inconvenient for the user

I had the same problem after updating from 11.04 to 11.10. I could get

killall pulseaudio worked. Thanks!

[Bug 845775] Re: gnome system monitor shows network upload speed that is inaccurate

2011-10-30 Thread buynada
Thanks Kyle, Dmitri, that is correct, I am referring to the tooltip and
the main window not matching. 1.6MB != 4.4MB regardless of whether
using 1024 or 1000 bytes per KB, etc.

Until recently I had only used the tooltip to track my network usage.
When I confirmed it with the transfer window I saw it was off. When I
checked it against the network monitor window I saw it also did not
match.

Many other users may just use the tooltip, so it would be helpful if the
tooltip was accurate.

I'm new to posting bugs here so I have remarked confirmed, but please
update if I was not supposed to do that.

thanks,
Peter

[Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-10-30 Thread Cabalbl4
The bug is back now for me (( The thing I have done before to make it gone -
pass "nosplash" instead of "quiet splash" in grub and enable option
GRUB_TERMINAL=console and GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
Now i have reverted these options - and the bug is back for me on Natty
2.6.38-10-generic.
So it seems to be graphical-mode related. (Maybe plymouth - dependable?)

Now reverting back to working options.

[Bug 883759] [NEW] Unity long program menus are overlapped by indicators

2011-10-30 Thread Jan Girlich
Public bug reported:

When having a small screen (like on my laptop) and using a few indicator
applets, those are overlapping the menus of programs. When clicking on
an indicator, the underlying menu is activated, though, making the
overlapping applets inaccessible. See the attached screenshot where the
thunderbird help menu lying behind the ressource-manager applet shows up
and makes the applet inaccessible.

I am looking for a way to make long menus and applets work. I can imagine
several ways:
1) Allow the panel to be resized. I couldn't find a way to make the panel twice
as big as with the pre-unity panel.
2) Make the menu roll to the left when pointing the mouse near the right end of
it.
3) your idea...

[Bug 878621] Re: Screensaver takes too long to exit after unlock

2011-10-30 Thread Ariel Faigon
Looked at this issue some more.

/usr/bin/kslideshow.kss has many transition-effects between photos.
Which transitions are being used is not a configurable option so you get all of
them.

Most of the transitions are lightweight and finish in a second or two.
Some of the transitions are complex and take very long to complete.

When one of these more complex transitions which take a very large
number of seconds to finish kicks in (can be a minute or more), the
computer becomes sluggish.

The worst offender is a transition that does a random almost pixel-by-
pixel rendering of the new photo superimposed on the previous photo.
While this is going on an strace of the kslideshow.kss process shows a
tight loop of poll() and writev() system calls.

here's short sample, there are many of these every second.

poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}])
writev(6, [{"H\2\376\331s\336\5\5t\336\5\5X\2]\0\0\0G\1\0\30\0\0", 24},
{"\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377"...,
 223200}, {"", 0}], 3) = 128000
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}])
writev(6,
[{"\33\257\377\377\33\256\377\377\26\253\377\377\26\251\376\377\34\255\376\377+\277\377\377-\305\377\3772\320\377\377"...,
 95224}, {"", 0}], 2) = 95224
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}])
writev(6,
[{"<\2\2\0t\336\5\5\230\4\5\0u\336\5\5s\336\5\5!\1\0\0\0\0\0\0>\2\7\0"...,
128},
{"\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377"...,
 261600}, {"", 0}], 3) = 128000
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}])

kslideshow.kss is in the package kdeartwork. I did a apt-get source and looked
at the sources.
I believe the source is kdeartwork-4.7.2/kscreensaver/kdesavers/slideshow.cpp
but not 100% sure.

thanks for sorting it out! I agree. It makes more sense just to include the
icon.

[Bug 883441] Re: Kernel 3.0 (11.10 default kernel) won't boot unless acpi=off, worked fine with the default kernels of the 3 previous releases

2011-10-30 Thread Alexander Winizki
Now I have tested this with kernel 3.0.0.13.15 - same results, machine
hangs. Searched the Ubuntu wiki, but found no information abiut where to
get 3.0.0.12.20. I have activated the oneiric-proposed repository in
Synaptic and then it offered me the kernel 3.0.0.13.15

[Bug 811441] Re: Unable to connect to the system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: Connection refused (oneiric)

2011-10-30 Thread adrian
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 858122 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/858122

Similar problem here, fixed using the above procedures.

/run existed, had some content
/lock existed, empty
/var/run had content, a directory vmblock-fuse couldn't be deleted until
unmounted

I also noticed a crash dump during the upgrade, while attempting to
close the wireless interface. My wireless interface was switched off
(hardware switch) at the time, I was using wired ethernet.

Wireless and wired working fine after the fixes above. 3G dongle also
looks ok (poor signal here, hard to be sure).

[Bug 883765] [NEW] KDM looses focus on new password entry of a new user

2011-10-30 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 11.10 64-bit ~fresh install.

Create new user
log off
type the username & pw of the new user in KDM
I get a dialog telling that a new password is needed. Clicking the button (OK?)
I'm asked for a new password. However it's impossible to write anything in the
lineedit, can't focus with mouse either.

Two other people tried this on #kubuntu-fi too and confirmed this behaviour.
It was also reported that if you press OK in the 'you need to type a new
password' window, the lineedit works normally.

This has been reported here before but then closed as
worksforme/downstream: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=264539 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259649 so I thought I'd report it
here if it's a Kubuntu issue.

[Bug 880003] Re: Synaptic displays "An error occurred"

2011-10-30 Thread John Law
[fixed]
After reading question #174349 synaptic package I was able to fix the above.
In /root/.synaptic/synaptic.conf I found a reference to natty. Changed it to
oneiric.
Still threw an error but slightly different.
I did
sudo apt-get remove synaptic
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install synaptic

That fixed the problem entirely.

[Bug 826719] Re: the "indicator applet" no longer shows which layout is currently selected - it only shows an icon of a keyboard.

2011-10-30 Thread Michael V. Antosha
(This paragraph is in reply to #3.)
This is not the case for me. The description of my problem is very close to
the title of this bug (except for "no longer shows" part that should be
"doesn't show" in my case, because it never worked for me, actually).
Although, my report is not very reliable: my system is not Ubuntu, but Ubuntu
based (Trisquel).
I have three layouts, but current layout was not shown (the indicator *was* on
the panel in the form of static icon, that resembles keyboard).

This problem took place in my Trisquel 4.5, and had not disappeared
after upgrade to Trisquel 5.0.

Workaround that finally solved my problem:
I created "New Panel", added to the new panel all I need (including "Indicator
Applet"), removed the old (standard) panel. Now I have my layout indication
working correctly.

[Bug 883773] [NEW] xubuntu 11.10 "input not supported" on Acer X193W LCD monitor

did not do an upgrade from xubuntu 11.04; I have no idea whether that
might make a difference.

Internet searches reveal that Acer monitors seem to be problematic. Also
that "Input Not Supported" has to do with not being able to correctly
identify the monitor.

The live CD worked okay. But it tended to set my monitor at 1440*900
75Hz, which is wrong according to the manual. It should be 1440*900 60Hz
max says the manual.

I hope you get this problem fixed in 12.04, for xubuntu, ubuntu, and all
the other ubuntus.

If it is not possible for the OS to properly detect all monitors, could
there be such a thing as asking the user for information about the
monitor when it runs into the "Input Not Supported" error? And testing
it.

[Bug 883775] [NEW] non cumulative memory leak in dlopen/dlclose

2011-10-30 Thread Ivan Sorokin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10, libc6 2.13-20ubuntu5.

After calling dlopen/dlclose few blocks of memory left unfreed. They
number is not grow when dlopen/dlclose are called several times.

This is not fatal bug, but it makes it harder to find memory leaks in
other parts of program.

Source code:

#include
#include
#include

void print_dlerror()
{
  char const* msg = dlerror();
  if (msg == NULL)
 fprintf(stderr, "unknown error at dynamic linking");
  else
 fprintf(stderr, "dynamic linking error: %s", msg);
}

int main()
{
   void* asound = dlopen("/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libasound.so.2", RTLD_LAZY);
   if (asound == NULL)
   {
  print_dlerror();
  return EXIT_FAILURE;
   }

   printf("module is loaded successfully: %p\n", asound);

   dlclose(asound);

   return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

Valgrind output:

valgrind --leak-check=full --show-reachable=yes -v ./a.out

How can you conclude that the case may result in data corruption on
filesystem on the external device?

In fact, before system suspend, 'sync' has been called to sync all the data
for all the filesystems.

Re: [Bug 877776] Re: ocelot: system not supported

2011-10-30 Thread Paul Childs
Thanks Alessandro,
It seems to be running smoothly again. No problems since (though I haven't
reinstalled just manually added the dependency -- guess I should else I
might uninstall the dependency and not get a warning). I shall have to
learn how to do the patching myself as I'll probably be doing some
packaging in the near future. Looks pretty straightforward (at least in
this case). Of course there's knowing where to send stuff and the rest of
the protocol.

Re: [Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2011-10-30 Thread Ernst
This bug is disappeared for me (it started reapppearing a week ago), with
the changes in /etc/init/dbus.conf still in effect.

Maybe this has to do with my reinstall of grub2; after that, my computer
shuts again. This possinly indicates it has to do with certain boot options?

[Bug 882817] Re: shutdown screen stuck after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-30 Thread Stefano Bagnatica
I have the same problem, every shutdown hangs. I tried this before
shutdown and it worked correctly:

- killed nm-applet from System Monitor
- sudo service network-manager stop
- sudo service networking restart

Maybe the only command needed is 2°, stopping the network-manager
service.

2011-10-30 Thread sam tygier
i'd put in some money as well. do you think this could be done through
the Tex development fund https://www.tug.org/tc/devfund/ they already
have the infrastructure to collect donations and pay developers.
