[Bug 883748] [NEW] Suspend/resume corrupts external data storage devices
Public bug reported: Ubuntu will permit suspend/resume (have not tried hibernate) without attempting to unmount any external USB storage devices, even though processes may still have open files on these devices. After the system is resumed, the USB storage devices may not be present, due to not having been re-enumerated yet. This can and DOES result in data corruption on the filesystem on the external device, as evidenced by errors in dmesg and having to do journal replays. I am not sure that the dmesg here will have the whole story (due to dmesg -c having been run as part of another bug report) but the parts that may not be there basically boil down to reiserfs being very unhappy that the block device was yanked out from under it. As a policy decision, it is WRONG to allow suspend to take place unless externally-attached USB block devices are still mounted. The system needs to attempt to unmount everything in /media prior to suspending, and needs to FAIL TO SUSPEND (throwing an error) if all devices cannot be unmounted due to some of the mount points being in use. [Bug 883723] Re: package ttf-freefont 20090104-7 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package ttf-freefont is already installed and configured
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal: sudo apt-get clean Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. If this does resolve your bug please set its status to Invalid. [Bug 883533] Re: HighContrast miss shutdown button
In order to reduce Internet time I downloaded a CD and updated both computers from the same CD. It could be that the CD is missing the png file for the icon you have showing. If you can tell me the file name and location I can check it. Likewise, if you can tell me where to get the missing file, I would like to start to use the high contrast since the dropbox icon is UGLY in the Ambiance version (you can't see clearly when it is updating). There is something else I'd like to ask, which also may be missing from the CD. In 11.04 I could choose at login if I wanted to see the menus in Hebrew or English. That option is gone in 11.10, which means I can't update many of my friends who feel much more comfortable in Hebrew. What I would like to ask you is: do you see Italian at login time? [Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
I just want to point out, that decision to go for XFCE without checking out current (4.7) KDE is not a most sensible one. Linus gave up KDE 4 because the development 4.0 version was picked up as a stable one by so many distributions. 4.0 was never supposed to be released "into the wild". This situation pictures two problems: 1. Give every complex software time to mature and let it grow all planned features before giving it a deciding tryout. 2. Even if the software was lost for you, give it another chance once in a while. Seriously - KDE SC is an amazing piece of software now. I wish Ubuntu adopted KDE as its main desktop environment. I know its much work, but I wish it nevertheless. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668415 Title: Movement of Unity launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/668415/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 883754] [NEW] No option to select app from custom location to open type of files
Public bug reported: When you have a type of file, for example a Gimp file, .xcf, I used to be able to select a custom built Gimp as default to open the file with, by browsing to the directory I built it in. The option to select the application through a path is gone. This is a serious regression, limits the freedom of the user, and makes it impossible to use custom built applications as default when the user wants, or even needs it. Ubuntu does not always ship the latest and greatest version of software, and sometimes these are exactly the ones that are needed. The only options that appear are the apps installed by the software center, or 'search online', which are neither what I need. The option to select the app from the users custom location is necessary. I hope this will be fixed very soon. [Bug 877671] Re: Logon screen - language switch trouble
Only tried with lightdm. There is no way to change the keyboard layout on the logon screen and there is no direct indication of the current layout. This is a regression from the blueprint from Matt Zimmerman which dates back from 2005 : https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/gdm-keyboard-layout As of Ubuntu 5.10, the initial keyboard layout used before login is part of the X.org configuration file, and cannot be adjusted by the user until after login. This is problematic because: The user may not be able to login if the layout is incorrect The X keyboard layout is currently "guessed" from the console layout chosen in the installer, and this process is known to be imperfect Different users may require different keyboard layouts This requires that the keyboard layout be asked for ahead of time on the live CD, which is inconvenient for the user -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877671 Title: Logon screen - language switch trouble To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/877671/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Kyle, Dmitri, that is correct, I am referring to the tooltip and the main window not matching. 1.6MB != 4.4MB regardless of whether using 1024 or 1000 bytes per KB, etc. Until recently I had only used the tooltip to track my network usage. When I confirmed it with the transfer window I saw it was off. When I checked it against the network monitor window I saw it also did not match. [Bug 883759] [NEW] Unity long program menus are overlapped by indicators
Public bug reported: When having a small screen (like on my laptop) and using a few indicator applets, those are overlapping the menus of programs. When clicking on an indicator, the underlying menu is activated, though, making the overlapping applets inaccessible. See the attached screenshot where the thunderbird help menu lying behind the ressource-manager applet shows up and makes the applet inaccessible. I am looking for a way to make long menus and applets work. I can imagine several ways: 1) Allow the panel to be resized. I couldn't find a way to make the panel twice as big as with the pre-unity panel. 2) Make the menu roll to the left when pointing the mouse near the right end of it. 3) your idea... ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883759 Title: Unity long program menus are overlapped by indicators To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/883759/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 878621] Re: Screensaver takes too long to exit after unlock
Looked at this issue some more. /usr/bin/kslideshow.kss has many transition-effects between photos. Which transitions are being used is not a configurable option so you get all of them. Most of the transitions are lightweight and finish in a second or two. Some of the transitions are complex and take very long to complete. When one of these more complex transitions which take a very large number of seconds to finish kicks in (can be a minute or more), the computer becomes sluggish. The worst offender is a transition that does a random almost pixel-by- pixel rendering of the new photo superimposed on the previous photo. While this is going on an strace of the kslideshow.kss process shows a tight loop of poll() and writev() system calls. here's short sample, there are many of these every second. poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}]) writev(6, [{"H\2\376\331s\336\5\5t\336\5\5X\2]\0\0\0G\1\0\30\0\0", 24}, {"\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377"..., 223200}, {"", 0}], 3) = 128000 poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}]) writev(6, [{"\33\257\377\377\33\256\377\377\26\253\377\377\26\251\376\377\34\255\376\377+\277\377\377-\305\377\3772\320\377\377"..., 95224}, {"", 0}], 2) = 95224 poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}]) writev(6, [{"<\2\2\0t\336\5\5\230\4\5\0u\336\5\5s\336\5\5!\1\0\0\0\0\0\0>\2\7\0"..., 128}, {"\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377\0\0\0\377"..., 261600}, {"", 0}], 3) = 128000 poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=6, revents=POLLOUT}]) kslideshow.kss is in the package kdeartwork. Clicking the button (OK?) I'm asked for a new password. However it's impossible to write anything in the lineedit, can't focus with mouse either. Two other people tried this on #kubuntu-fi too and confirmed this behaviour. It was also reported that if you press OK in the 'you need to type a new password' window, the lineedit works normally. This has been reported here before but then closed as worksforme/downstream: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=264539 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259649 so I thought I'd report it here if it's a Kubuntu issue. [Bug 826719] Re: the "indicator applet" no longer shows which layout is currently selected - it only shows an icon of a keyboard.
(This paragraph is in reply to #3.) This is not the case for me. The description of my problem is very close to the title of this bug (except for "no longer shows" part that should be "doesn't show" in my case, because it never worked for me, actually). Although, my report is not very reliable: my system is not Ubuntu, but Ubuntu based (Trisquel). I have three layouts, but current layout was not shown (the indicator *was* on the panel in the form of static icon, that resembles keyboard). This problem took place in my Trisquel 4.5, and had not disappeared after upgrade to Trisquel 5.0. Workaround that finally solved my problem: I created "New Panel", added to the new panel all I need (including "Indicator Applet"), removed the old (standard) panel. Now I have my layout indication working correctly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/826719 Title: the "indicator applet" no longer shows which layout is currently selected - it only shows an icon of a keyboard. [Bug 883773] [NEW] xubuntu 11.10 "input not supported" on Acer X193W LCD monitor
Public bug reported: On boot, xubuntu produces the error "Input Not Supported" floating all over the screen. At first it didn't get past this error and I couldn't boot. Now it still produces the error message but somehow gets past it and boots. My monitor is Acer X193W LCD. I installed xubuntu from CD; I did not do an upgrade from xubuntu 11.04; I have no idea whether that might make a difference. Internet searches reveal that Acer monitors seem to be problematic. Also that "Input Not Supported" has to do with not being able to correctly identify the monitor. The live CD worked okay. But it tended to set my monitor at 1440*900 75Hz, which is wrong according to the manual. It should be 1440*900 60Hz max says the manual. I hope you get this problem fixed in 12.04, for xubuntu, ubuntu, and all the other ubuntus. If it is not possible for the OS to properly detect all monitors, could there be such a thing as asking the user for information about the monitor when it runs into the "Input Not Supported" error?
